Haiti: Its History and Culture
Learn about Haiti during an informative panel discussion chaired
by Professor Angus Kress Gillespie, a folklorist who has researched the traditional beliefs, myths, tales and practices of the
Haitian people through scholarship and fieldwork. The keynote
speaker will be Jeff Richter, President of the New Jersey-Haiti
Partners, Partners of the Americas, and Lieutenant Colonel, U.S.
Army Reserve (Retired), former Haiti Desk Officer for the 358th
Civil Affairs Brigade. The panel will be composed of experts
on Haitian history, culture and society, including the author of
Closure, Lt. Bill Keegan, P.A.P.D. (Ret.) who recently led a H.E.A.R.T.
9/11 team during the search and rescue operation in Haiti.

James T. Fisher’s On the Irish Waterfront depicts
the quintessential gangster era that infiltrated
the New York and New Jersey waterfronts in the
1900s and the demise of its empire in the 1950s.
Professor Fisher will discuss the historical journey behind the making of one of Hollywood’s
all-time classics, Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront.

CHOIR OF CENTRAL NEW JERSEY
Under the direction of two local cantors, Anna
West Ott and Sheldon Levin, the Jewish Choir of
Central New Jersey, Makhelat HaMercaz, will again
present a stirring program, spanning the spectrum
of Jewish experience and traditions. The repertoire includes African- and Caribbean-style songs,
Ladino songs, and traditional and new songs
from Israel and the U.S.

MYTHS OF EXERCISE AND FITNESS
People often use myths and “old wives’ tales”
about exercise as an excuse for not exercising
or as an explanation for lack of success in their
exercise plan. Ned Webber, a Certified Personal

about exercise and answer related questions.

Gypsy duo Milena Dawidowicz, violinist, and Elena Panova, pianist, will present the sophisticated
melodies of Roma music from Eastern European countries, as well as the traditional songs based

the incorrect view of New Jersey as a border

effort to preserve the union.

Looking for a volunteer opportunity over the summer? Here's your
chance to participate in The Teen
Library Connection! This popular volunteer program is for East
Brunswick students entering 8th,
9th and 10th grades in September.
The program runs for 8 weeks over
the summer, from June 28–August
20. Students are eligible to apply for
two consecutive weeks. Participants
will be accepted on a lottery basis.
Applications will be available online
or in-person on April 23. Completed
applications will be accepted INPERSON ONLY from May 3–17.
