Bonan Lasso up Haiti: Its History and Culture Learn about Haiti during an informative panel discussion chaired by Professor Angus Kress Gillespie, a folklorist who has researched the traditional beliefs, myths, tales and practices of the Haitian people through scholarship and fieldwork. The keynote speaker will be Jeff Richter, President of the New Jersey-Haiti Partners, Partners of the Americas, and Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army Reserve (Retired), former Haiti Desk Officer for the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade. The panel will be composed of experts on Haitian history, culture and society, including the author of Closure, Lt. Bill Keegan, P.A.P.D. (Ret.) who recently led a H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 team during the search and rescue operation in Haiti. Monday, March 22 • 7–8 p.m. NEW JERSEY’S CIVIL WAR POLITICS Author and professor William Gillette will refute the incorrect view of New Jersey as a border slave state that sympathized with the South, state rights, secession and slavery. Dr. Gillette will discuss the fact that New Jersey, along with other lower northern states, backed the North’s effort to preserve the union. Here's your chance to participate in The Teen Library Connection! This popular volunteer program is for East Brunswick students entering 8th, 9th and 10th grades in September. The program runs for 8 weeks over the summer, from June 28–August 20. Students are eligible to apply for two consecutive weeks. Participants will be accepted on a lottery basis. Applications will be available online or in-person on April 23. Completed applications will be accepted INPERSON ONLY from May 3–17.
