Editor’s Notes
Welcome to the second edition of HawkeyTalk for the
2012-13 season. After an incredible performance on the
Eastern Swing through Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the
Hawks will look to a few more home games in the near
future.
I want to thank all of our monthly contributor’s to the
HawkeyTalk Newsletter, especially this month with the very
busy schedule and that our Eastern Swing ended as the
deadline fast approached for this edition. Thank you for
allowing the newsletter to stay on schedule!
Because we've only had three home games thus far, it's
really too early to tell how well the Booster Club activities
will do this season. That said, the overwhelming support
to date in those three games, gives us hope for sold out
buses on our Fan Bus Trips this season and the
strongest membership that I can recall in many years. If
you're not signed up for the Fan Bus Trips yet, I would
strongly suggest you hurry so you don't miss out!
With this edition of the HawkeyTalk Newsletters which will
debut at the monthly meeting of the Portland Winterhawks
Booster Club on Saturday, October 20, the membership will
have “first access” to the newsletter, thereafter members not
in attendance can obtain a copy of the newsletter at the
Membership Table while supplies last or at www.pwhbc.com.
With the start of the “HawkeyTalk Game Night Program”
as this issue comes out (October 20, 2012), we really
hope for the success we know it can attain. We decided
to offer game ticket vouchers on a nightly basis during the
regular season sales of the program and with the support
of the Winterhawks we have some tickets to start off. It
was also thought that sales would be strong if there was
a Grand Prize at the end of the season for those who buy
programs nightly. We have a final prize to be drawn after
all the games this season have been decided, which is, a
“Team Signed Jersey.” We also have a different idea of
sales strategy, plus additional sellers and learning from
last season. With this in place, I have even higher
expectations for the program this year. The newly
designed programs contain autograph areas beside each
players picture, which makes great stocking stuffers, and
a fantastic introduction to hockey for new fans. We know
you will enjoy this years’ edition.
We are in the process of finding out what will be made
available to us for raffles this season. We hope to have a
game worn “Chris Francis Autographed Jersey” for raffle
soon and we will see what other raffles we will have over
the course of the next month. In addition, about the time
our next HawkeyTalk Newsletter comes out, we will also
be starting the “Annual Player Christmas Ornament
Auction.”

The Booster Club will be entering a very busy part of the
hockey season: Today, October 20, 2012, begins the Annual
Sales of our “HawkeyTalk 101 Game Night Program” and along
with the program comes an “Entry Form” for that nights
drawing of two (2) future game night ticket vouchers as well
as another automatic entry into the Grand Prize Drawing
during the Playoffs of a Team Signed Jersey. So, pick up your
Programs each night, the more you enter the better
opportunity of winning, every program gives you two
opportunities to win! Also, programs make great “stocking
stuffers” too. You can also use your programs to collect
“autographs” of the team.
The scope of the Booster Club has always involved community
involvement, so far this year we are planning three special
charity drives and hope that you will not only participate but
encourage others by spreading the word.
On Saturday, November 3, 2012, the Victoria Royals will be in
town. This is also the Annual Turkey Shoot Night and at the
doors will be barrels to collect donations of items for the
Oregon Food Bank and the Portland Sunshine Division. NonPerishable items and cans of food will be greatly appreciated.

Over the past several years, the auction has been highly
successful both in sales and the player’s creativity. One
can imagine each year when the tree is put up, the
signed ornaments of star hockey players adorning it.
It is hoped in each of these three donation opportunities that
the Portland Fans of the Winterhawks will be able to donate at
least a full truck load to each charitable program. We know
“we” can because it has always been done before! Thank you
for your giving spirit all year long but especially during the
holiday season.
Because we are not organizing the player events and
appearances this season, it does take away some
potential dollars which we could realize, however, we also
believe that by helping to promote them and have our
members attend, it shows strong support for both the
Hockey Club as well as the Booster Club. If you can
attend these events for which the dates are listed inside
on page (2) two that would be greatly appreciated. If you
are on our email list, Facebook, or Twitter, we will post
the event locations and dates as we get them.
The Booster Club will be helping to run the “Kenton
Station Viewing Parties” again this season. Our first one
is Saturday, November 10, when the Hawks face off
against the Spokane Chiefs in Spokane, Washington.
With the loss of the GOAL Club this season, we would
like to offer the Booster Club as a place to donate money
to the Player’s Education Fund and receive a tax receipt.

EDITOR’S NOTES (Continued from Page 1)
With the same idea in mind on Friday, December 14,
2012, the Everett Silvertips will be in Hawkey Town! This
night the Annual Ham Shoot will be held and once again
we ask that you bring non-perishable foods and canned
food and “feed” the barrels at the front entrances. Again
you will be helping the Oregon Food Bank and the
Portland Sunshine Division during this special time of
year.
On Friday, November 23, 2012, we will have the Daylight
Classic Game and the Kootenay Ice will be in town. We
are asking for a different kind of donation at this event.
We will be collecting “New and Gently Used Blankets and
New Men’s Socks” for the Homeless, your donations will
go to the Union Gospel Mission and your Portland
Winterhawks Players will deliver these donations.
Another special event during the holiday season is the “Annual
Player’s Ornament Auction.” It will be here before you know
it! This is always a fun event for the player’s and fans alike.
The player’s will decorate individualized Christmas Ornaments
to be auctioned off at the Booster Club Table. The initial part
of the event will be a “Silent Auction” beginning on Saturday,
November 17, 2012 and will run to the 10 minute mark of the
first period intermission on Friday, December 14, 2012, when
the Silent Auction will end and a “brief” oral auction will begin
for each ornament. This will give everyone fair opportunity to
bid as the crowds at the end of the Silent Auction do not
always allow everyone access to place final bids. As you can
see, this is a very popular event and we thank you for your
annual participation.
Fan Bus Trips (open to ALL Fans not just members) are rolling
along at a brisk pace. This year we are offering the following
Fan Bus Trips:
Saturday, December 1, 2012 is a day trip to visit the Everett
Silvertips. At this point this bus is half-full and we hope, with
only four more games after tonight that we will be able to fill
this bus and have a great experience rolling into Everett
supporting our Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club.
On Saturday, January 26, 2013, we will have another day trip,
this time to Tri-Cities in Eastern Washington. This trip is also
half-full and although we have some time, it would be best to
get your reservation in place at the earliest possible
opportunity.
And our “Hat Trick” Trip is to Canada once again this year, but
to four different venues, yes this is a four day trip with four
games on tap. You will depart on Thursday, February 7, 2013
with two games in Kelowna, a Vancouver game and a game in
Abbotsford with the Heat vs. the Lake Erie Monsters. At this
point there will probably be former Winterhawks player’s on
these teams. The first bus for this trip is selling out fast! In
the first three nights of our opening season this bus was halffull. By tonight it will be over half full as we are getting
reservations by mail too.
So, get “on board” today and get your reservations in for all
three Fan Bus Trips.

What an excellent Eastern Swing it was for the Portland Winterhawks.
A 4-1-1-0 record, and one hit crossbar by Ty Rattie in Regina away
from going five and one, which would have matched the Hawks’
accomplishment with a much more veteran lineup in 2010. Speaking
of Ty Rattie, its official: the early season slump for the Hawks’ leading
sniper from a season ago is definitely over. Striking four times against
the Swift Current Broncos, and 7 times overall on the 6 game trip, the
sky should be the limit for the 57 goal man. Rattie notched his 250th
career WHL Regular Season point in the game against the Broncos,
and with the chemistry he’s built this season with Nic Petan, I’d be
willing to bet he’ll eclipse 300 points sooner rather than later.
With Rattie and Petan clicking on the road trip, it looked like they built some serious chemistry
on the bus, or perhaps, the curling rink. Rattie was the “skipper” of the second place team in
the Hawks’ team curling tournament in Regina on a day off during the trip. The Hawks always
use one of the days off on the long swing to play a fun team-building game or activity. Over the
last few seasons the group has gone curling twice, played cricket once, and also gone for a
journey in Calgary while horseback riding. Rattie’s team was second in curling, falling to backto-back champion, team captain Troy Rutkowski and his crew. Rutkowski reunited with his
fellow defending champ Tyler Wotherspoon, as well as Derrick Pouliot and Dominic Turgeon to
win the whole title in a thrilling final match against Rattie’s crew.
The Hawks saw some rookies take leaps forward on the swing through the east as well, Alex
Shoenborn scored his first career goal against the Brandon Wheat Kings, and Presten Kopeck
scored his first two WHL goals 25 seconds apart in Saskatoon to propel the Hawks to a 4-0 win
against the Blades. That was a night of firsts for the Hawks, as Seth Jones scored his first
career WHL goal as well that night. Jones was incredibly effective throughout the entire trip,
and was a key catalyst in the Hawks only giving up one powerplay goal in the 6 game swing.
The one goal they gave up on the trip was scored while Jones was in the box. The 18 year old
is proving to be as good as advertised and really proved he had adjusted to the WHL game on
the swing. I expect big things from Jones from now till Christmas, when he is a virtual lock to
join Team USA at the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championships.
What now for the Hawks? Well it’s time for the Hawks to play in front of you, the best fans in
the WHL, for the next 6 games. Portland has shown that they’re road warriors in the early
season, and now with a 6 game homestand the Hawks are looking to establish the Rose
Garden and Memorial Coliseum as fortresses. The Hawks’ first home game on the brand new
ice sheet in the Veterans’ Memorial Coliseum comes Sunday, October 28th. With brand new
boards, glass, and a regulation size ice-sheet, I’d expect the Hawks to come out flying in their
permanent home. And don’t be surprised over the next six games to see the Hawks have a
few more players notch their first career goals. Dominic Turgeon, Joe Mahon, Keegan Iverson,
and Paul Bittner all look dangerous up front, and sophomore Layne Viveiros is long overdue to
get that first goal puck in his locker. Get ready to see a different team than the one that left for
the prairies two weeks ago, this young group took a big step forward and are looking to
continue that momentum as they look to recapture the US Division Crown this season.

I am writing this as we travel back from the last game of our Eastern Swing in Swift Current.
Trips like these are one of the more difficult challenges for a Western Hockey League Team
and especially for first year players. Returning home is an 18 hour venture with everyone trying
to catch some sleep on the floor or seats…with rookies often sleeping sitting up, side by side,
due to lack of space. Remember this is after playing 6 games in 9 days. If our players want to
be pros they have to get used to performing every night after demanding travel. That is what
the American Hockey League is all about and most of our guys will start there as they try to
crack the NHL roster.
In similar fashion to the last two years our swing out east was very successful. I felt we had the
edge of play in every game and even though we played 4 games in 5 nights to finish the trip our
guys once again showed the extra conditioning has paid off. We were quicker and kept a higher
pace throughout each and every game.
You may have noticed we have rotated the younger players on a consistent basis throughout the early part of our
season. I feel we have great depth up front and plan on trying to split up time between the group especially early in the
season rather than sit a couple of individuals for an extended period of time. On defense we have been rotating Viveiros
and Vorobev in that one spot and unless there is an injury that process will continue. The WHL has a rule that you have
to give 16 year olds a minimum of 40 games which will be the case for Turgeon, Iverson and Bittner but I feel it is
important to have as many of our depth players in games early because we are going to need them at Christmas when
the World Junior is on. During the month long tournament I expect we will lose Rattie, Pouliot, Jones and possibly
Leipsic. Also early in December Bjorkstrand might join Denmark in the B Pool Championships.
Much like all our loyal fans I am looking forward to returning to the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum (VMC) in a couple
weeks with a new ice surface, boards and glass. This is an exciting and much needed face lift for the building and for the
first time the ice surface will now be regulation size. As the Rose Garden engineers will tell you that ice plant wouldn’t
have survived another year. Now we will have improved ice conditions and boards and glass which will match the Rose
Garden. For the players they will experience similar conditions when switching arenas for games.
Three weeks ago we named Troy Rutkowski as the 37th captain in the history of the Winterhawks. Troy is fifth in all time
games played and tied with Joe Morrow for playoff games played as a Winterhawk. These are two great
accomplishments for a player who still has a year to go. He is a great role model for our younger guys because he went
undrafted and then made the team as a list player – had his struggles early and then was selected in the NHL draft by
Colorado. Troy will be assisted by three other long time Winterhawks – Ty Rattie, Tyler Wotherspoon and Taylor Peters.
I believe we have a great core of leaders which also includes some of the younger 94 and 95 born players who will take
over in this area next year.
While on the road trip we were excited to hear from Chicago that Mac Carruth was coming back. From all reports he had
a great camp but due to the lock out and their contract situation in goal they felt he was better off getting games in
Portland. They like the situation he is in here and felt last year when they sent Andrew Allen their goaltending coach out
that Mac was continuing to develop as a prospect. With the return of Mac we have to move Cam Lanigan due to the fact
that you are only allowed three overage players on the roster. We had picked up Cam off waivers in the summer and I
have to say that he has been very professional in this process and played great in the three games. I expect that he will
be picked up by another team in the league shortly.

Road Trip! What the Eastern Swing reveals about the season to come

The Winterhawks staff picked the best of the bunch. You can’t go a day
without reading an article about Seth Jones. Oliver Bjorkstrand is following
in the #27 tradition and scoring nearly every time he steps on the ice. Ty
Rattie’s scoring touch is back; all the way back. Pick the player, pick his
move. After a few early “what the heck?” games, somewhere on the road between Portland and Swift
Current, all of the Portland Winterhawks found their game. Most importantly, they found it together. Even
more exciting; the road trip was just a preview of what’s coming. If that’s what they did in two weeks and
six games on the road, imagine what they’ll do when they hit the stretch run. I already have, and that’s how
I know the best is yet to come.
A new tradition has begun. 1) Draft a Euro player whose last name starts with B. 2) Give him a jersey
with #27 on the back. 3) Sit back and watch him score. When it’s all said and done, I’d look for a hat trick
or two, perhaps some scoring festivities on New Year’s Eve, and Rookie of the Year honors for Oliver
Bjorkstrand (see this month’s rookie profile for more choice bits). During the road trip, he was the first
rookie to reach 5 goals and 10 points, having already duplicated Sven’s feat of four points in one pre-season
game. That being said, I think this new tradition is a keeper.
The beauties are here. Accordingly, the beauty is coming on the ice: you can see it and you can feel it. My
personal picks for what we’ll see this season: 1) Obviously, Ty Rattie must pull off a special edition Rat
Trick by scoring the teddy bear goal for the third year in a row. 2) In case you didn’t see me blog it, Taylor
Leier must score the game winning goal in the Memorial Cup final, in his hometown of Saskatoon.
Preferably via my favorite type of goal; top shelf. This is a moral imperative in my book. 3) Brendan
Leipsic must dedicate more time to scoring and less time to chirping. 4) The Calgary Flames must sign
Tyler Wotherspoon. 5) Somebody in the NHL with GM next to their job title must get with the program
and sign Troy Rutkowski. It is my firm opinion that Colorado’s rookie mistake in not signing him is
another team’s gift. If said team would step forward with an entry level contract and pen in hand, I would
greatly appreciate it.
There’s a first time for everything; and a last. Three rookies scored their first points and/or goals on this
road trip, guaranteeing that the Winterhawks’ future is in good hands. It’s also important to remember that
for three players, it was their last Eastern Swing. No matter what the future holds for Captain Troy
Rutkowski, newly returned goalie Mac Carruth or Assistant Captain Taylor Peters, all must leave us at the
end of this season. All three have given us so much to be proud of and by which to remember them. As we
welcome our new talent to Portland, let us also take this season to give our departing players a reason to
remember us.

As Winterhawk fans you should check out the American Hockey League box scores on any given night now that the
NHL is in a lockout situation. Many former Portland players are on the rosters and you will see a lot of familiar WHL
names. I did this on the weekend and was surprised to see how many players I knew.
With only a few games for the remainder of the month it will be a chance for us to get much needed practice time, an
opportunity to work with individuals on skill development and Rich Campbell our strength coach will have very
demanding conditioning sessions to ensure that we stay at the top of the league in this area. Off the ice the players
schedule will be packed with school, community service and sponsorship events. It will be nice to be home and know
that our longest trip of the year is behind us.

ROOKIE PROFILE - OLIVER BJORKSTRAND

The math: 26 is the magic number: Oliver was selected by the Winterhawks 26th overall in the 2012 CHL Import Draft,
a pick acquired from the Kelowna Rockets in 2011. He was signed by Portland on July 26. He played last season with
the Herning Blue Fox of the Danish professional league and totaled 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points in 36 games,
helping his team to the league championship. Oliver led all 16-year-olds in the league in scoring, with the next closest
player his age registering five points. He also represented Denmark at the 2012 World Junior Championship and tallied
two goals in the tournament. And finally, he played for the national team at the 2012 Under-18 World Championship
where he registered seven points in six games. His talent runs in the family: his father, Todd, coached Oliver and his
brother Patrick with Herning. Dad is a native of Minneapolis, played college hockey at Maine and played minor pro in the
U.S. before embarking on a long playing career, and now coaching career, with Herning.

My take: Oliver wears number 27, he’s from Europe, his last name starts with a B and needs help from trained
professionals to pronounce properly, and he scored four points in the pre-season. Sound like anyone we know whose
initials are Sven Bartschi? Oliver looks like he’s all of 12 in person, but he talks like someone twice as old. I’m always
impressed by our Euro players, because they bring a worldly, mature quality with them, and they are always excited to
be here. Oliver is no exception. I would look for Rookie of the Year and WHL Player of the Week honors before all is
said and done with this season. It is also his draft year (he turns 18 on April 10), so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a
surge in his NHL Central Scouting mid-term rankings. In short, this one’s a keeper.

It’s a good place to be. I like it.
What has been the biggest change, challenge, or difference in transitioning from a Euro League to the WHL?
The rinks are smaller and the people are different, but I like it.
Are you attending a local high school?
I go to Sunset High School.
Now that you are here in Portland, what are your goals for this season?
To get more ice time, especially on the power play.

7:00 pm. The weekly hour-long show will take you inside the team with exclusive interviews and

JACK JABLONSKI SPECIAL DONATION PROGRAM
This season, the Booster Club will be collecting donations and selling wristbands and special
buttons honoring Jack Jablonski. For those who don't know the history, Jack was a 15 year old
player for Benilde-St. Margaret's High School, a Junior Varsity Hockey Team. He was playing
against a team from Wayzata High School during a holiday tournament in St. Louis Park, Minnesota
on Friday, December 30, 2011 when he was checked from behind into the boards and paralyzed.
Jack has made remarkable progress in his recovery, through his determination and fan support.
Keegan Iverson, current Portland Winterhawk player and friend of Jack's is wearing Jack's old
number 13 in his honor this season.
With the support of the Jablonski family, the Booster Club is selling wristbands for a minimum $5
donation and buttons for a minimum $1 donation with the money helping cover medical bills that
have been incurred as a result of this injury.
There is a donation container at the Booster Club Table where buttons are sold. 100% of these
donations will go to “JABS Fund.” Thank you!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
HAWKEYTALK 101 GAME NIGHT PROGRAM SALES VOLUNTEERS: Beginning Saturday,
October 20, 2012 we need Volunteers before the first period, when the doors open to sell the
Game Night Programs. A prize will be awarded to those who sell the most programs over the
entire season.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2012 and FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2012: Before the doors open
to the game venue, we need volunteers to assist people with can food donations for the
barrels at the front entrances and possibly inside the venue as well. These are also the
Turkey and Ham Shoot Nights. Your Volunteering will not interrupt your viewing of the
games.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2012: The Portland Winterhawks Booster Club will be collecting
“NEW and GENTLY USED BLANKETS as well as NEW MEN’S SOCKS” for Portland’s
Homeless and the Union Gospel Mission. This is the Daylight Classic Game at the Veteran’s
Memorial Coliseum (VMC).
