1 Mile East of Downtown Geneva
This year there is a new
bridge to dedicate! It is
the West Liberty Street
Bridge, located on West
Liberty Street (surprise!)
in the City of Geneva.
It is the only covered
bridge in a municipality
in the county. Thanks
to the foresight of the Geneva City Council;
former county engineer, John Smolen and
his engineering firm; and the great students
and instructors of the Ashtabula County Joint
Vocational School, the county now have the
shortest covered bridge that will be able to
hold vehicular traffic in the United States. So
now, the county truly has the longest and the
shortest of the nations covered bridges. What
a great distinction for Ashtabula County!
For your entertainment this year the festival
has the Maidens IV, a quartet of sisters who
perform Celtic and Irish music that is just
amazing. Local groups performing are: The
Blevins Brothers Band and Kenny Osborn for
some down home country music. The Geauga
Highlanders, a bag pipe and drum corps will
be in the parade and then perform for us on
Saturday afternoon at the Fairgrounds.
Benetka Road Covered Bridge

Money earned will help with troop expenses
and be shared with the boys working that day
to help with their scouting expenses. Restroom

September 22 - October 6, 2010
In pursuing her long-time dream of opening her own seafood restaurant, seven years
ago Patt Bowen saw the potential for new business in the small resort town of Geneva-onthe-Lake. With the opening of the new Geneva
Lodge and Conference Center, people from all
over were discovering Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Being a history buff, Patt was also drawn to the
quaintness and charm of the village.
In search of storage space for the restaurant,
she tore down a false wall and discovered a
huge room stacked to the ceiling with relics
and remnants from the storied “Strip”, among
them the long-forgotten shooting gallery. It is
unclear how it got there, but it was unused and
gathering dust for at least several decades. Further investigation revealed that it was built in
1928, originally came from Coney Island, and
is one of only five like it in the world still in
working order. (Actually it did require a little
belt repair to get it going again, but was easily
restored.) With a flick of the switch, it springs
to life approximately every half hour during business hours, laboriously groaning and
clanking along.
The shooting range isn’t the only unearthed
treasure at the Chanty. The tables, chairs, and
booths all came from the Ashtabula Hotel, as
did the huge mirrors mounted on the wall at
either end of the bar. Their smoky pink hue
compliments the walls, painted in subtle colors
of the Lake Erie sunset and covered with 125
lbs. of sand. The bar itself contains 300 lbs. of
sand, along with family trinkets and seashells.
The surface of the bar features pictures of mermaids and copies of original sea chanties dating back to 1465---1600’s, from the archives at
Cambridge University. Nautical memorabilia
and artifacts embellish the entire restaurant.
Authentic chanties and other original compositions by independent musicians provide
background music and add to the maritime
atmosphere.
Patt Bowen designed everything herself,
from the placemats---- a buried treasure map
with “X” marking the spot [latitude 41:51:37
.768N, longitude 80:57:5 .602W—location
of the Sandy Chanty], to the menus that look
like a treasure chest. Most items on the menu
are named after something on a ship. Cannon

Balls are sweet onions stuffed with
meatballs, drenched in sweet and
spicy bar-b-q sauce, and topped with
apple bacon. Ship’s Wheel appetizer
consists of bits of Brie cheese topped

wine. Another dish using local wine
is the Stargazer Lavender Chicken Salad, a
gourmet’s delight, served on a bed of fresh
pineapple.
In keeping with Patt’s respect for all things
natural, she uses a lot of honey, lavender,
herbs, and even flowers in her cooking. Blue
Moon is an appetizer of stacked Beefsteak
tomatoes layered with sweet onions, gorgonzola cheese, organic lettuce, and balsamic
vinegar & oil. Apple Salad combines thinly
sliced apples and carrots tossed in honey lavender dressing served over baby spinach. The
emphasis of course is on seafood entrees but
there are many options offered to please every
palate. Some of the daily specials include:
Patt’s famous Lobster Lasagna - a Four cheese
lasagna with lobster claws, served with lobster
sauce. Crab “Patteez” in a Blanket- Salmon
stuffed with Patt’s Crab Pattie, covered in
lobster sauce. Cockles & Mussels- Tiny clams
and mussels served over a bed of potatoes. In
addition to the Conch Fritters and other great
appetizers always on the menu Patt is currently
featuring a “Port Portobello” appetizer; a full
Portobello mushroom cap stuffed with smoked
seafood sausage covered with provolone
cheese and adorned with basil and roasted red
peppers.
New to the Sandy Chanty this year is
“The Lobster Zone”, a live lobster tank which
allows visitors to try their luck at catching their
dinner. Patt says “You catch it I’ll cook it!”
The special way that Patt prepares the lobster
may make it the best one you’ve ever eaten.
The seventh annual Chanty Fest highlights are:
Saturday night 8:30 pm The Covert Operation featuring songwriter - guitarist - actor
– vocalist – entertainer extraordinaire, Rob
Covert. Backing Rob are local favorites Jim
Ales on bass guitar and Bob “A” Messina on
drums. If you have not had the chance to see
Rob in the recent production of Rent, in the
singing Minstrels of Mud at the Great Lakes
Medieval
Faire, at the
historic Oakroom Dinner
theatre or any
of his long,
long list of projects and achievements over
the years then here is your chance to see him
at his best, performing in the intimate setting
of the Sandy Chanty. Reservations are suggested.
Sunday afternoon an open drum circle
for “kids of all ages” will begin at 3pm and
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
continue until the drummers are all drummed
out. Ok, they may stop to enjoy some dinner.
So bring a drum, bring the kids (and the kid
at heart) and join in the rhythm of the Chanty
celebration.
Also, don’t forget it’s Monster Crawl
time from now through October 31st so get a
stamp on your t-shirt ticket during your visit at

The Geography of Winegrowing : Appellations of Origin
Since January 1983, American wines
have been officially identified by the regions in
which their grapes are grown. They are known
either by their political subdivision (e.g.,
county or state) or by a specifically designated
viticultural (grape growing) region named because of climate, soil, topographic and historic
conditions which produce name recognition
and distinctive characteristics in the grapes and
wines grown and vinted there.
the Firelands group in Sandusky. There are no
active wineries on the island, and the state of
Ohio recently purchased the property. It will
become a state preserve and most of the grapes
[once the largest single planting of vinifera
grapes in the state] have been removed. .
The Appellations of Origin were established
to help educate the consumer and encourage
the continued development of quality standards
in American wines. They are loosely patterned after similar geographic designations
in France, Italy and Germany. In France, the
only true Champagne comes from a district
with that name. Sparkling wines from Italy
are identified by the preface ‘Asti’ as in Asti
Spumante. In the United States, there are
several hundred officially recognized growing
districts. The most famous of course are Napa
Valley in the west and east of the Mississippi,
the Finger Lakes.
Ohio currently has been granted five viticultural appellations:
Lake Erie: This district begins near Toledo
and extends along the southern shore of the
lake beyond the Ohio border into New York
State. There are nearly 100 Ohio, Pennsylvania
and New York wineries in this appellation.
In terms of land mass, it is one of the largest
designations in the country.
Isle St. George: This northern ‘Bass Island’
is wholly contained within the Lake Erie Appellation, and encompasses the island of North
Bass in the Lake Erie Island group off Port
Clinton. It once supplied grapes to Meiers
Wine Cellars in Cincinnati and more recently
Grand River Valley: This is our ‘hometown’ appellation within the Lake Erie region.
It follows the path of the Grand River in Lake,
Ashtabula and Geauga counties and includes
an area just 22 miles long and 4 miles wide.
Despite its small size, today it is the largest
and fastest growing viticulture region in the
state. Primary varieties include Chardonnay,
Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer,
Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Vidal Blanc hybrid
is also widely grown for ice wines. There are
several dozen winegrape vineyards and nearly
20 wineries in the region.
Ohio River Valley: This rambling region
borders the Ohio River from Wheeling to Cincinnati and continues to Evansville, Indiana.
There are about two dozen Ohio and Indiana
wineries in the Ohio River Valley appellation.
Loramie Creek: This tiny region is in west
central Ohio, in Shelby County, bordered by
Loramie and Tuttle Creeks and State Route 47.
Currently, there are no active wineries in this
appellation.
And there is a move underway to create yet
another recognized district called Conneaut
Creek. Work on establishing this new designated area is progressing and hopefully will be
in place in the not too distant future.

The John Lennon Cover Song Contest

that: he’s the archetypal rock legend. Both as

Discover the Real You
So often we live our lives pretending to be
someone we aren’t. We play games, adopt
roles, try to impress others and forget to really
express the truth of who we are.
As we live this, not only do we deceive others,
inadvertently we deceive ourselves. We begin
to forget the truth of our own lives and who
we really are. Then we do not understand why
there is a gnawing sense of anxiety, disappointment, or the lack of fulfillment we live with.
Many have no idea what is wrong, and search
for the answer in work, relationships, money
or drink.
But living this way never brings true fulfillment. Although we may know we are off
track, it can be hard to discover what. We have
forgotten who we truly are, what we want and
need in order to feel happy and real.
In order to know who you are, you must also
know who you are not, what is false and
unworkable in your life, where you are living
someone else’s dream. You must know what
feels disturbing, fundamentally out of synch
with your truth. It’s important to acknowledge
that which you cannot do,

Does time fly or what? I could swear
that I was just working on an article about
the Tri-C Jazz Fest. But when I stop to
think about it, that was half of a year ago.
Anyway, I hope you had a great summer.
We certainly had no shortage of warm days.
Actually, I’ve rather enjoyed the chilly
mornings that we’ve had lately. Unfortunately, along with chilly mornings, come cool
autumn evenings. This can make things a bit
uncomfortable for both the listeners and the
performers on the outdoor patios. So I guess
that it’s time once again, to explore the opportunities that await within the walls of our
favorite wineries, restaurants and clubs.
There is, however at least one more outdoor event coming up this weekend that you
ought to catch while you can. Hopefully you
are reading this article in time to make plans
for a quick trip to Legacy Village. Located
at 25001 Cedar Road in Lyndhurst, Legacy
Village is more than just a shopping center.
There is a summer calendar of events each
year that is filled with music and fun.
The weekend of September 25th and
26th, Legacy Village presents, “Art in the
Village II”. This is an outdoor art show,
featuring the works of artists from across
the country. Don’t miss this eclectic mix of
some of the nation’s most talented artists,
who will collectively display millions of
dollars in artwork.
The artists, juried by an independent panel
of expert judges, are hand-selected from
hundreds of applicants based on quality and
diversity. Admission and parking are free!
On Saturday, Art in the Village will begin
at 10 am, and will be open until 8 pm, but
the music will continue until 11pm. Justo
Saborit will take the stage at 11 am to get the
day off to a great start.. Following Saborit at
3 pm will be The Dave Sterner Quintet, who
will keep the jazz flowing for the rest of the
afternoon. “Cats on Holiday finish out the
evening from 7 until 11 pm.
Sunday morning, the show opens at 10
am as well, with the Colin Dussalt Duo
playing from 11 am until 2 pm. Blue Lunch
The Coolest
Music Store!
will take the stage at 3 pm and entertain until
the show closes at 6 pm. This could be the
perfect opportunity to acquire that unique
piece of artwork that you’ve been searching for, while enjoying some of Cleveland’s
finest musicians.
Hey, here’s some big news, CJO has
announced its new season! Cleveland Jazz
Orchestra will hold the debut concert of the
2010-2011 season on November 6th, at the
Hanna Theatre on PlayhouseSquare. The
first concert in the CJO’s 26th anniversary
season, entitled “The Cleveland Scene”
will showcase hometown jazz giants; Ernie
Krivda, saxophone, Dominick Farinacci,
trumpet, Bob Fraser, guitar, Ki Allen, vocalist, and in his second year as CJO artistic
director, the international trumpet star and
gifted composer Sean Jones.
With this line-up, this is sure to be an
evening of enchantment for CJO fans, jazz
enthusiasts and just about anyone else,
who has even the slightest interest in jazz,
or the history and future of jazz in Cleveland. Let’s see, how can I make my point
here?....... YOU GOTTA SEE THIS!!!!
Check out www.legacy-village.com and
www.clevelandjazz.org for all the details.
There, that should do it. There are great
things going on this fall in Cleveland and all
over the North Coast so c’mon out and be a
part of the jazz!

Cleveland Blues Society
Annual Blues Challenge
Wilberts
The Cleveland Blues Society will
hold its second annual blues challenge on
November 7th at Wilbert’s Music downtown.
There are two blues categories: SOLO/DUO
& BAND. The admission price is $8 for any
Blues Society members and $10 for nonmembers. The winners in the competition
will represent the Cleveland Blues Society
in Memphis on February 1st - 5th, 2011. The
event starts at 2:00 pm and doors open to the
public at 1:30 pm.
The application deadline for the chal-
lenge is October 9th, 2010. Blues artists
interested in applying can do so through the
Blues Society website (www.clevelandblues.
org). Last year’s winners were Becky Boyd
and Tim Matson in the solo/duo category and
Blue Lunch in the band category.
They competed in Memphis
and came home with
some great stories and
memories of the
week they spent
listening to smokin’
blues, making new
friends, and eating
authentic Southern barbecue.
Last issue’s Bluesville
column was
dedicated to the
Blues Society’s recent induction of
Travis “Monnchild” Haddix
and Nathaniel
“Guitar” Slim
into the Cleveland Blues Hall of
Fame. This issue’s
focus is another
inductee, one who is
no longer with us but
was inducted posthumously. How many blues fans
out
there knew that “Screamin” Jay Hawkins,
one of the most flamboyant and influential
entertainers in the history of American pop
culture, was born right here in northeast
Ohio?
Screamin’ Jay
Hawkins
Screamin’
Jay Hawkins was
born Jalacy
Hawkins in Cleveland on July 18,
1929, and placed in
an orphanage until
adopted at the
age of 18 months.
Jalacy learned
classical piano as
a youth, and aspired
to sing opera like his
idol, Paul Robeson.
His musical taste
changed direction, but
the theatrics of opera
would be a permanent influence on his
stage persona.
Hawkins
was also a boxer,
and fought in Gold
Gloves competitions
before quitting high school
to join the Army Air Force. He served
in World War II primarily as an entertainer

based in the Pacific Theater, but played service clubs all around the world. He claimed
to have been captured (and tortured) as a
POW before he was able to plan a chaotic
and daring escape. He had a brief career as
a professional boxer before he focused on
starting a career as a blues piano player and
singer. Jalacy Hawkins once said he got his
nickname at a nightclub in Nitro, West Virginia, in 1950, from a fan who encouraged
him to “Scream, baby, scream!” scream!”.!”.
In the early 1950s, Screamin’ Jay
worked with artists like Tiny Grimes and
Johnny Sparrow before starting his own
band. It was at this time that his opera influence surfaced as he began to play in outlandish attire. 1955 was
the year that Screamin’ Jay Hawkins
wrote and recorded
his signature song.
“I Put a Spell on
You” was going
to be a ballad, but
a rowdy, drunken
late-night recording session resulted
in a raw performance that featured
Hawkins screaming
and grunting his
way to what was
first banned by some
radio stations as being “suggestive”, but
became Hawkins’
biggest song. He later could not remember
the recording session.
Disc jockey Alan Freed paid Hawkins
to rise from a coffin onstage to perform
“Spell”, and Hawkins used the idea to create
an act that included leopard skin costumes
and various “voodoo” stage props, including skulls and snakes. During the 1950s he
also travelled with Alan Freed’s rock ‘n’ roll
September 22 - October 6, 2010
revues, appeared on “American Bandstand”,
and played several Cleveland venues, including Leo’s Casino.
Screamin’ Jay’s popularity soared
because of “I Put a Spell on You”, but his
other recordings did not approach the same
level of success. He remained very popular
in Europe during the 1960s and 1970s, and
appeared in the film American Hot Wax
(1978). In 1981, he opened for the Rolling
Stones at Madison Square Garden. Screamin’
Jay also appeared in Perdito Durango and
A Rage in Harlem. In 1983, he relocated to
New York City and worked for a few years
with the garage rock band The Fuzztones.
They appeared in the 1986 film Joey.
In the early
1990s Hawkins had
a bit of a recording
resurgence which included covers of several Tom Waits songs.
His version of “Heart
Attack and Vine” was
his only British hit,
reaching #42 on the
U.K. singles chart in
1993. He recorded
or toured during the
1990s with Dread
Zeppelin, The Clash,
and Nick Cave. His
1957 single “Frenzy”
was included in the
compilation CD
“Songs in the Key of
X: Music from and Inspired by the X-Files”
in 1996.
“I Put A Spell On You” has
been covered by the likes of Nina Simone,
Credence Clearwater Revival, Eric Burden
and the Animals, Jeff Beck, Bryan Ferry, Ray
Charles, Joe Cocker, Tab Benoit, Audience,
Buddy Guy, Iggy Pop, Manfred Mann, and
dozens more. The Crazy World of Arthur
Brown probably comes closest to matching
the intensity of Hawkin’s performance of the
song.
Screamin’ Jay’s biggest hit was
featured on the soundtrack of Oliver
Stone’s Natural Born Killers, and the
1983 movie Stranger Than Paradise.
The Creedence Clearwater Revival version
and the Nina Simone version were used
in Rebecca Miller’s The Ballad of Jack and
Rose. Marilyn Manson’s version can be
heard in David Lynch’s Lost Highway, as
well as television ads for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense. The song has been
used in an episode of The Simpsons (“I’m
Spelling as Fast as I Can”) and an episode
of The PJ’s. It was featured in the movie
as well as the Supernatural episode, “Malleus Maleficarum”. The Hawkins version
has even become a standard accompaniment for ice skaters, including Michelle
Kwan, Alexei Urmanov and the team of
Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow. The
tune has also figured in countless radio and
television advertisements, such as those
for Pringles, Levi’s, McDonald’s and Burger
King.
Screamin’ Jay Hawkins died February
12, 2000 at the Ambrose Pave clinic in the
Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine following

emergency surgery for an aneurysm. He was
seventy years old. His stage persona, with its
props and wild costumes, directly influenced
artists such as Little Richard, Black Sabbath,
Alice Cooper, and Marilyn Manson. As the
Halloween season approaches, every time we
hear “I Put A Spell On You”, we owe a nod
to this colorful Cleveland musician.

Promoting Music That Matters
help out whenever they can to help better the
fortune of others and they are trying to use this
show to do just that.
It has been at least ten years since MBB
were popular in the local music scene, so for
those of you who are not familiar, here is what
you should know: The band formed around
1993, but did not play their first gig until 1995.
They competed in The Battle of the Bands in
Conneaut and tied for first place. The lineup
for that night was Dave Crossman, David
Clayman, Todd Ankrom, and Steve Altonan.
Most people know of David Clayman as the
lead vocalist, but he was the bassist at that
time, he did not start singing until 1996. That night
Crossman sang, Altonan did a
guitar solo, and Clayman did
a harmonica solo. They probably would have preferred to
have won first place alone, but
tying with another band was not
too shabby, especially for their
first show. Over the next few
years band members came and
went, some of them including:
Andrew Hathy, Doug Roscovics,
Joe Capo, Chris Dixon, and John Hicks. The
band’s brand of Metal/Alternative, at least
that’s how Clayman would classify it, became
very popular, drawing large numbers of people
to their shows. They even made a CD during
this time, around 1998, that did well for a local band. The members that were involved in
making the CD were Doug Roscovics, David
Clayman, Steve Altonan, Todd Ankrom, and
Andrew Hathy. The music was likely popular
because it was all about the people, lyrically it
was random ideas and feeling, but it was about
the band doing what they liked, but doing it
for the fans.
Not all of the past members of the MBB
will be there on the 2nd, but there will still be
many: David Clayman, Todd Ankrom, Steve
Altonan, Doug Roscovics, and Joe Capo
will all be present. Andrew Hathy is another
member who joined the armed forces, the
Navy to be more precise, and will not be able
to make it, but it just gives us another good
reason to donate to the USO. MBB are the
headliners, but there are many other bands that
are joining in to raise money for our troops
and give the people a great night of live music.

All in all there will be eight bands at The Cove
on that Saturday from 7pm until 2am. The
lineup includes: City Cop, In So Far, My Great
Escape, PRS, AFO, This Dust Was Once The
Man, K-Phit, and, of course, The Mosquito
Bitten Bastards. The tickets are $3 presale, and
$5 at the door. There has been a lot of buzz
about this upcoming show, it will be a night of
awesome music for an even better cause; and
I know I, for one, will be there to support the
USO and to give my friend David a wonderful
sendoff.

Friday October 15
BoomBox is
Producer/Engineer/
DJ/Drummer Russ
Randolph and Producer/DJ/Vocalist/
Guitarist Zion Rock
Godchaux. This pair
of dynamic artists uses their rich musical
history and their vision of music and popular
culture to deliver a style of music distinctly
different from anything heard or seen in music
today. This signature sound and show brings
live music to a new, elevated level. BoomBox
evolved through the common visualization
of two forward-thinking artists from diverse
musical backgrounds. Raised by supportive
and musically inclined parents, both Godchaux
and Randolph had an obsession with music at
very young ages. Godchaux, who grew up with
deeply embedded rock and roll roots, began
playing drums at the age of two, and played
guitar and wrote his own songs as a teen. During the 90s, Godchaux was a well-received
touring DJ based out of the San Francisco
area. Randolph began as a young drummer,
but it’s what was happening behind the scenes
that attracted him most. As much producers
as they are musicians, it is Randolph’s knack
for engineering, Godchaux’s understanding
of soundscapes and the duo’s rich ability to
improvise live that keeps BoomBox resonating
at higher levels.

Excerpts included from Donniella Winchell’s
“Harvest is Coming”
It’s that time of year; the leaves are beginning to turn shades of gold and red, the nights
are becoming very cool and the magnificent
aroma of the grapes drifts throughout the
country side. It is harvest time in the vineyards. Only a few locations in the world
host the unique occurrence known as ‘The
Crush.’ We are fortunate indeed.
Ohio truly enjoys a progressive harvest
‘season.’ Growers south of I 70 pick about 2
weeks earlier than the island area and the vintners in the very northeast corner begin 2 weeks
later still. Vineyards in a dozen other ‘microclimates’ around the state, pick somewhere in
between. And, each grape variety ripens on its
own timetable.
Generally, however, grapes are harvested in
the cool of the morning and transported to the
waiting wine cellar in the early afternoon. The
goal is to crush the grapes at their optimum
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
quality – one reason why vineyards are usually
located adjacent to winery facilities. Some
grapes are handpicked into lugs, others are
picked with mechanical harvesters. In every
case, getting the fruit to the awaiting presses in
good condition is essential.
Initially, the grapes are separated from their
stems in a mechanical crusher. This piece of
equipment breaks the skins and creates a thick
slurry which is either pumped directly to the
presses [for white wines] or put into large vats
for initial fermentation on the skins [for red
wines.]
White juices are collected, settled and then
pumped into chilled fermentation tanks where
specially selected yeasts interact with the
natural sugars and produce alcohol and throw
off carbon dioxide. Throughout the upcoming
year, the juices are settled, clarified, filtered
and eventually ‘become’ wine.
Of course it’s not just harvest time for
grapes, over the last couple of months the farm
markets have shown a bounty of tomatoes,
squash, peppers, carrots and now pumpkins!
Throughout the state of Ohio there are festivals
galore and a great number of them are linked
to a commodity in their area. Starting at the
beginning of summer and continuing right
through fall one can celebrate the harvest of
strawberries, corn, fish, melons, popcorn,
potatoes, apples, and pumpkins. If you are a
festival buff visit ofea.org for a list of all the
festivals that belong to the Ohio Festival Association.
One of the largest festivals is the Geneva
Grape JAMboree with this year making the
47th year. The festival always takes place on
the last full weekend of September. Geneva
is an ideal spot for the celebration as the surrounding area is packed with over 1500 acres
of grapes. This year the Grape JAMboree falls
on Sept. 25th and 26th. The town is transformed into a food, fun, and grape Mecca.
The local grapes, especially the concords are
featured. Visitors may taste grapes, freshly
squeezed grape juice, wine and various grape
products. All grandstand entertainment,
September 22 - October 6, 2010
including “grape stomping”, is free. Two
giant parades are held; Saturday, 1:30p.m.
and Sunday 2:00p.m. The midway rides and
games, art show, craft fair, beer garden, street
dancing, cornhole competition, and wine tasting (Saturday only at the Geneva Community
Center) The main stage entertainment is nearly
continuous and the highlights for the weekend
are:
Saturday - David Ball 8:30pm
Grammy Award Winning Vocalist, Songwriter,
Musician.
In the mid 1980’s, a publishing deal brought
David to Nashville. In 1993, David recorded
his now multi platinum debut album and single

to date has sold 3 million copies. Thinkin’

as Male Vocalist of the Year
Soul Men at 6:30pm (Opening for David Ball)
The Soul Men, Blues Brothers Impersonators,
perform a tribute to Joliet Jake and Elwood
Blues.
The Soul Men’s persona, is an uncanny
resemblance to “The Blues Brothers”. Dressed
in black from head to toe, displaying finger
tattoos, The Soul Men impersonate Jake &
Elwood to perfection. The Soul Men’s performance is a high energy, fast paced, audience
participating routine. They perform all the
favorite “Blues Brothers” songs, and get the
audience moving and dancing.
Sunday - The Hobos Polka Variety at 6pm.
A very unique Polka Band that has delighted

fans since 1975.
Mr. Speed (a Tribute to Kiss) at 7:30
In a world where imitation is the most
sincere form of flattery, few bands have as
devoted a following as KISS. With 16 years of
experience under their spandex MR. SPEED
continues to forge ahead writing their own
chapter in KISSstory. Many tribute bands
claim to be the eighth wonder of the world,
falling short in most occasions when it comes
to delivering what KISS fans expect. MR.
SPEED refuses to make such a claim. Our
focus is clear and has been since day one...
to give the KISS fans our very best. We never
settle for mediocrity. Every show is another
opportunity to prove to ourselves and to KISS
fans everywhere that paying tribute is showing
the ultimate in respect.

By Helen Marketti
During the 80s, singer Robbie Dupree
had hits on the charts that many will remember. His signature hits, Steal Away, Hot Rod
Hearts and Girls in Cars, which
by the way Girls in
Cars was also used
as entrance music for
two WWF wrestlers
at the time. Now after
nearly thirty years,
his music is still
generating interest to
those who remember
him and to a new
generation of fans.
Robbie is grateful for
the path he has chosen
and has definite thoughts on how he would like
to see it continue. His latest CD, Time and Tide
(Spectra Records) is now circulating through
the music circuit and one of its songs, Lucky
sums up how he is feeling these days.
“Lucky is a thumbnail sketch of my life,”
said Robbie. “It’s a short song to sum up a
forty year career.”
Robbie explains how he decided on the title
Time and Tide for his CD. “The actual expression is, “time and tide waits for no man,” and
how appropriate that is. Originally it was the
name of a song on the album but it turned out
not to be. I felt it was an appropriate title for
me at this point in my life. It’s hard to come
up with a title for an album. I don’t try to be
clever with my songs but I don’t try to be so
obvious that it clunks you over the head with
every little detail. Sometimes I am writing
songs as I see other people, as a spectator and
relating my material to what someone else may
be going through.”
“I would like to do albums more often
but there is that fear of duplicating yourself.
You need to put some living time in between
records. I think there needs to be a creative
distance between each of your record releases.
It takes time to put an album together. With
Time and Tide, I felt there were enough topics
and living life that was done in between the
records. It made more sense to me to do it that
way.”
Earlier this year, Robbie appeared on the
Jimmy Fallon Show, which caused a stir
toward jump-starting his public image once
again. “I came back from Italy last November and started getting emails from fans and
friends who were telling me to get the latest
issue of Rolling Stone Magazine at the time
that had Bono, Jagger and Springsteen on
the cover,” recalls Robbie. “They went on to
tell me that there was an article about Jimmy
Fallon that I had to see so I went out and got
the magazine. The article talked about his
show and his musical tastes. Jimmy Fallon was
asked who he hasn’t had on his show yet but
would like to and responded with he wanted
to get Robbie Dupree to sing Steal Away. This
was crazy; I couldn’t believe it and I didn’t
September 22 - October 6, 2010
even know Jimmy Fallon personally.
ev
I called my agent to get in touch with
JJimmy Fallon’s show. It took months to
gget the schedules together but we finally
ddid it and that’s how it all happened.
Out of all the people he could have
O
cchosen or talked about, he picked me.
IIt opened up a lot of doors being on a
show like that.”
A tour is in the works for the fall of
tthis year, beginning in Japan and then
having state side dates. Robbie prefers not to
have an opening act for his shows. “I would
rather do a long show instead. Sometimes, I
will bring in a guest to play with us. I have
attended concerts where the opening acts had
really nothing to do with the main act and I
have never cared for that.”
Looking back over a career that has lasted
over thirty years, Robbie said, “If people liked
my work back then, they will like what I am
doing now. This means I am still relevant and
that’s what I want to do. I don’t want to dye
my hair and come up with a different version
of Steal Away thirty years later. I still have to
play that song every night but I go by the old
saying, “Dance with the one that brought you.”
If it weren’t for those hits, Steal Away and Hot
Rod Hearts, I would have been out of this business long ago. You need something like that to
happen in your music career to sustain you.”
“I think the internet is a great tool. It’s like
a storefront to the world. You can type in a
band’s name or certain artist and find out in
moments what they are doing now. Before the
internet, you wouldn’t be able to access that
kind of information. I get emails from people
all the time who have found out what I have
been doing and they are so glad to see I am still
involved with music. That is really heartening
to me; that’s why I do what I do.”
He continues, “By the early 80s, my stuff
became pop music but eventually I matured
and more records came out but the style of my
music changed, too. You can’t keep writing
about girls riding in cars any more especially
if you stay in this business long enough. Your
role will change - something like movie actors
as they change and mature so do the roles they
play.”
“It’s flattering to have been part of that era
but after time passes you view it all as music
without putting it in a certain category. I view
my work back then as part of my musical
legacy.”

7th Annual Tommy Amato Rock Relief Cancer Benefit on Sunday Oct 3rd…
Kicks off with Starfleet reunion show at The Cove in GOTL Fri Oct 1st

Legendary rock drummer Tommy Amato
is an amazing and encouraging
story for cancer patients. The two time
cancer survivor will
be flying in from
L.A. to his hometown Cleveland
to host the 7th
annual Tommy
Amato Rock
Relief Benefit
to raise money
for a musician
cancer victim.
The event will be
held at The Sly Fox
in North Olmstead
Sunday October 3rd
starting at 6pm and
goes until midnight.
For only $10 you will
get great live music from six awesome bands
including Billy Morris of Warrant, some really
cool prizes are being raffled and your favorite drinks will be served by Tommy’s Bikini

Tommy himself.

someone challenged with cancer. Each year
he picks a member of the community who
will benefit from the proceeds of the event.
This year’s recipient is Kip Volens. Kip is a 55
year old drummer and has played in various
Cleveland bands. Tommy feels that there is
a greater impact from the money raised for a
single recipient.
Tommy first got Lymphoma (cancer of the
lymph nodes) in 2001and beat it in 2002. But
in 2003, it came back twice as strong. “The
doctors gave me a 20% chance of living,”
Tommy explains. “I took a year off going in
and out of chemotherapy, radiation and every
other type of treatments at UCLA Hospital.
During that time, my friends in Cleveland that
I played with, one in particular, Andy Gerome
who I have been pals with since I was 14,
called me up and said ‘I want to hold a benefit
to help you out.’ I told him my bills were covered. But, he insisted and said ‘I really want
to do something for you.’ You know friends
like that are for a life time,” Tommy expressed
emotionally. “You can count those kinds of

Tommy has played in bands since he was 15
years old. He remembers times when the band
members had to sneak him into venues that required you to be 18 years or older so he could
play with the band. He was also in a band with
Cleveland native Neil Geraldo called Lover’s
Lane. He joined Starfleet in 1972 and still
plays with them at their reunion shows.
Starfleet will be having a reunion show at The

When asked Tommy how he is feeling today,
“Never better!” he exclaimed. “I ride a bicycle

By Luthier Patrick Podpadec
The past few weeks I have been writing
articles about resetting the necks on acoustic guitars with the traditional dovetail joint
system. I would like to take a small break from
that subject to share with you a new repair
technique that I have recently come across
myself while reading and studying some of my
older issues of my G.A.L. magazines (Guild of
American Luthiers) not those other “gal” magazines. I came across an article that was written
by a very talented luthier named Harry Fleishman. He is a contributing writer for the guild
and has developed many interesting techniques
and designs over his years of being a master
luthier. This article was about how he goes
about building an access panel in the end of the
lower bout of the guitar so that it gives him full
access to working on the inside of the guitar. It
allows him to shave braces for different tonal
responses, fix or add anything like pickups and
power supplies or just about anything that you
need to do. Having an opening at the end of the
guitar lets the luthier/repairmen do so many
things. You have a much better view of the
interior workings of the instrument and it also
allows full access for placing clamps in areas
that would otherwise be very difficult or even
impossible to get a good glue job completed.
At first I was a little skeptical on the pro-
22
cess and was not really sure if I liked the idea,
but there came a situation that I had a job to
do on a guitar that I had built for Brian Henke.
When I built the “Dreamcaster” for him I had
never
put in a
pickup
system
in it.
For the
past
7 or 8
yrs the
only
time
he was
able to
play
it live
was in
a venue
that
had
perfect
stage
sound
and
was
equipped with a very expensive microphone
or a sound system that could eliminate the
natural overtones that the guitar would produce
under amplification. For the last few years I
have been
thinking
about how
I would
go about
designing
a pickup
system
that would
work for
an instrument
like the
dreamcaster.
Because
there is
so much

or short scale bass and a 15 string treble harp.
I felt it was necessary to have three completely
separated or individually preamped pickups
inside so that you would be able to eliminate
any unwanted overtones from one or more of
each of the three instruments that are inside
one box. This sounds a bit difficult, but with
the help of a new and good friend named Chris
Dehaas, we were able to conquer this task at
hand. Chris is an incredibly talented musician
that also happens to be an electronic wizard.
He has designed other custom musical devices
for a few different touring musicians over the
years. He makes and designs all sorts of cool
effect boxes that are a bit more advanced than
the type you may be able to get off the shelf.
If you find yourself in the need or have an idea
for something unique in the way of electronic
effects, I would highly recommend that you
give him a call. He may be reached at [email protected]. Chris was able to figure
a cool way that we could mount the three
preamps in the Dreamcaster and only have one
cord coming out of it. We would still be able to
have control over each separate pickup through
a small mixing board so that we could dial in
the sound we were looking for. It works great!
This system now allows Brian to take his
dreamcaster and play it at virtually any venue.
More people will be able to hear it and see it
and I’m sure that will inspire him to write more
of the beautiful music that he does so well.
Getting back to the access panel, the pickup
installation was the perfect opportunity for
me to try out this new technique. After talking
with Brian and telling him I wanted to put a
new “hole” in the bottom of his guitar. He was
alright with that. Brian is so cool about trying
new things. I must explain that this “hole” is
not left open. There is a panel that is removable
and when it’s in place it looks and responds
like it should be there. It does not weaken the
structural integrity of the guitar and also has no
noticeable effect on the tonal aspects either. After putting them into two instruments I feel I’m
totally sold on the idea. It’s very possible with
the permission and blessing of the originator,
Harry Fleishman, that I may start incorporating
this panel in my new line of guitars. To me it’s
like the way that Taylor guitars introduced and
“sold” the bolt on neck to the guitar playing
world by proving that there was no loss of tone
and that neck sets and any other neck related
repairs would be easier (there for less expensive) than the traditional dovetail joint. It may
be time to prove that the access panel may be
the answer to many of the repairman’s struggle
for trying to reach his or her hands way up
inside the guitar. Well until I will be able to do
that I would like you all to “Stay in Tune” And
of course if you have any questions please feel
free to call!
Thanks Again!

title track and world-wide hit "Jet" becoming
Wings' most successful and celebrated album

Paul McCartney personally supervised all
aspects of the Band on the Run reissue. The
remastering work was done at Abbey Road using the same team who recently remastered the

Grammy Nominated Singer and Multi Platinum Album Seller, David Ball, Takes
Center Stage at the Geneva Grape Jamboree Saturday at 8:30pm - And It’s FREE!!
David Ball was born in Spartanburg,
South Carolina,
growing up in a family where everyone
played an instrument. Starting out on
guitar, he eventually
gravitated to bass
fiddle. David joined
childhood friends
Walter Hyatt and
Champ Hood in
Uncle Walt’s band
and subsequently
relocated to another
fertile landscape, Austin, Texas. “All kinds of
great music were being made in Texas.” In the
mid 1980’s, a publishing deal brought David to
Nashville.
In 1993, David recorded his now multi
platinum debut album and single Thinkin’
Problem for Warner Brothers, which to date
has sold 3 million copies. Thinkin’ Problem
garnered him a Grammy nomination as Male
Vocalist of the Year. David wrote or co-wrote
all but one song on the album and has received
the BMI Millionaire
Award (for over one
million air plays) for
“Thinkin’ Problem,”
“When the Thought
of You Catches Up
With Me” and “Look
What Followed Me
Home.” He was soon
touring with some
of the biggest acts in
Country Music: Alan
Jackson, Brooks
& Dunn, Dwight
Yoakum, and Toby Keith.
David’s work caught the attention of Bob
Dylan who invited him to join artists like Jerry
Garcia, Bono, and Willie Nelson on The Songs
of Jimmie Rodgers: A Tribute in 1997. Later
that same year, David joined Bruce Springsteen as they performed at the Kennedy Center
Honors Reception, celebrating Dylan’s impact
on American music.
David Ball was one of the first artists to

Malone,” from the album Amigo hit 2. USA
Today called it “a country-music ghost story
with both tragic and hopeful elements, an allegory for freedom and sacrifice.”
In 2005 David won a Grammy for the song
“Old Folks At Home (Swanee River)” from
the album Beautiful Dreamer - The Songs of
Stephen Foster. That same year, Freewheeler
featured the hit single and video “Too Much
Blood in My Alcohol Level”. Honoring his
influences, David’s 2006 disc, Heartaches by
the Number, contained renditions of David’s
favorite classic recordings. Calling it a ‘Critic’s
Choice,’ People magazine wrote: “While
flashier, less talented singers have risen to
prominence in Nashville since his 1994 debut…David gets right to the heart of it.”
In 2009, David’s music came full circle:
Lyle Lovett reached back into Uncle Walt’s
Band repertoire to include one of David’s early
songs, “Don’t You Think I Feel It Too” on his
latest disc, Natural Forces.
David began 2010 with the release Sparkle
City, his first new album in three years. The
album was released April 20 on E1 Entertainment’s Red Dirt E1 Records, with the new
single “Country Boy Boogie” shipped to
radio stations shortly thereafter. David’s three
year break from recording was spent writing
songs and putting together the backing band
he always envisioned for his music. David’s
band, The Pioneer Playboys, features Troy
Cook Jr. on guitar, Billy Pierce on bass, and
Scott Metko on drums. The Playboys played
on all Sparkle City tracks. The band toured
throughout 2009, playing night clubs, theaters,
and festivals, refining the songs which have
been included on the new album. David and
the Playboys will be touring throughout 2010
in support of Sparkle City so if you miss him

OK gang. This is a crappy movie week. I
try to stay as current and as relevant as possible but the North Coast Voice does have a
deadline.
That means that there’s only one current
release in the theaters this week and shall we
say I’ll be surprised if the name comes up at
Oscar time.
First of all allow me to admit both my ignorance and snobbery. About all I know about
RESIDENT EVIL is the video game that I
played for a little while. It seems to me the
point was to wander around a post apocalyptic landscape for hours and then be killed by
zombies. If there’s more to it then I bailed out
before I got there.
Well movies based on video games almost
always suck to some degree so I was in selfpity mode right off the bat. My one glimmer
of hope faded when I realized that the director
Paul WS Anderson (PANDORUM) is not Paul
Thomas Anderson (MAGNOLIA, and Ghoulardi’s actual son). Sigh.
I’ll usually chat with the staff at the theaters
and of the three comments I got, one eagerly
anticipated it, one liked it as well as the entire
RE series, and one couldn’t imagine any reason it was ever made.
Well I was bored before the opening credits
were through.
I gather from the opening sequence that the
world had been ruined by the antics of some
nefarious mega corporation and now earth is a
crumbling poisoned hulk populated mostly by
hordes of living dead. OK. Our Heroine Alice
(Milla Jonovich) is on a quest to find a safe haven when she comes upon a group of survivors
trapped in a building about to be overrun by
goons. Here it follows the disaster movie template for a while as the characters work with
and against each other in that exodus.
Admittedly the plot is little more than a backdrop for almost non-stop CGI, monsters and
blazing gunfire.
The continuity is sloppy,
the acting limited to posing and the electronica
soundtrack annoying,
but I must admit it
gets less boring as it
rolls along.
I’ve always been a
fan of those “after
the fall of civilization” flicks and the
special effects really
are pretty impressive.
Oh there’s no real
resolution since it’s
clear the franchise
will go on as long
as there’s a buck to
be made, but I didn’t
hate it.
C
Machete
20th Century Fox R 105 min
So two gratuitous violence flicks this week?
Sorry this is a slow release season; it’ll pick up
soon. RESIDENT EVIL was the most current
at deadline and this one is still selling tickets
so we’re stuck with them. Sorry.
If you recall, directors Robert Rodriguez and
Quentin Tarantino teamed up to make homage
to the cheapo drive in flicks of the late 50s and
early 60s. In GRINDHOUSE they recreated a
couple of those schlock fests that would have
eventually made their way to Joel Mike and the
bots on MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3K.
MACHETE takes that hook into the seventies
where the “Blacksploitation” films (SHAFT
etc) had some popularity. This time Mexicans
are the guests of honor.
Now while RESIDENT EVIL featured bad
actors trying to be serious MACHETE features
(well a few) good actors trying to suck. They
do too.
Don Johnson, Robert De Niro and Jeff Fahey
team up with Lindsay Lohan, Steven Seagal
and Jessica Alba each striving for the cheesiest
performance possible.
When a movie is unintentionally funny it’s a
hoot but when you’re self consciously trying to
be awful, not so much..
While Paul WS Anderson was trying to make a
good move but didn’t; Rodriguez tries to make
a bad one and he does.
I don’t mean to overrate the guy but if all Tarantino had ever done was GRINDHOUSE and
www.northcoastvoice.com • (440) 415-0999
JACKIE BROWN, I wouldn’t be impressed.
Had Picasso never painted any realism one
might guess that abstract is all he could do and
therefore be cast as a hack like Warhol protégé
Basquiat. (hopefully, that ref is obscure enough
<G>)
I’m not sure if he or Frank Miller was the
guiding light behind SIN CITY (the only
noteworthy film Rodriguez worked on) but I’m
guessing it was Miller.
Anyway the plot here involves the good guys
(illegal immigrants) V the bad guys (politicians
and drug lords) and a bitter cop (Danny Trejo)
turned vigilante with a great big knife. But
wait; there’s more!
Since this is an R rating you can expect plenty
of F bombs, violence galore with lots of fake
blood and some frontal nudity.
Before you get your hopes up (if they were
any) Lindsay Lohan is apparently still a big
enough celebrity to rate a body double.
I wasn’t actually bored but neither was I all
that entertained and soon, like GRINDHOUSE

parture, lead guitarist Henry McCullough and
drummer Denny Seiwell quit the band leaving
the entire project to the three core members,
Paul, his wife Linda McCartney and bandmember Denny Laine (along with recording
engineer Geoff Emerick). Recorded in August
and September of 1973 (with further work
done at AIR Studios in London in October
1973), they persevered through a tumultuous,
yet creatively invigorating 2 month recording
process battling difficult studio conditions, oppressive heat and a dangerous mugging at knife
point. The thieves made off with the demo
tapes (among other valuables), forcing the
band to record the entire album from memory.
Band on the Run triumphed both critically
and commercially. The album topped the US
album chart 3 separate times, won a Grammy
and went on to sell more than 7 million copies.
Upon the release of Band on the Run, then
Rolling Stone reviewer Jon Landau famously
gushed, "The finest record yet released by any
of the four musicians who were once called
The Beatles."
Paul is currently playing five songs from
the album on his 'Up and Coming Tour'. Live
favorites over the last 8 years of touring have
included "Jet", "Band on the Run" and "Let
Me Roll It". In 2008 when Paul played a free
outdoor show to over 500,000 people in Kiev,
a Ukrainian poll listed "Mrs Vandebilt" as their

all time favorite Paul McCartney song. It's
been included in the set ever since. At the start
of this tour Paul added "Nineteen Hundred and
Eighty Five" to the set.
Band on the Run marks the first release
from the Paul McCartney Archive Collection,
an ambitious reissue program that encompasses
40 years of cherished, classic material from the
most successful songwriter and recording artist
in music history. It's also the initial physical
release of the recently announced agreement
between McCartney's MPL and Concord
Music Group to globally market and distribute
McCartney's venerated solo and Wings catalog.

Natural Stupidity!
Some sexy lady had the nerve to ask me;
“Do you believe in computer dating?”
“Hmm…” I thought for a moment then
remembered Groucho’s response to this
very question. “Only if the computers
really love each other!”
Well she must have wanted a real answer
because she just shook her head, turned
and walked away. “Huh… Good riddance, get a sense of humor weirdo!”
Computer dating? Does anyone still do
that? I thought that was like ancient history by now. Ugly, Weird, and/or Societal
Rejects are the only people who still post
on those sites anymore! Hmm… so what
if I fall under most of those categories,
I’m not doing it! Sheesh…
Okay look… if you’re really that hard up
and have to try online dating here’s the
one question you should ask when approached by any likely candidates;
“What’s the difference between an oral
thermometer and a rectal thermometer? If
they don’t respond with; “The taste”, then
they’re too stupid for you move on to the
next one!
Online, underline, or over-the-line, I’ve
learned that you cannot make someone
love you, all you can do is stalk them for
months and hope they panic and give in!
Look if the definition of insanity is doing
the same thing day after day and expecting different results, then you’re nuts if
you expect real results from online dating!
What has happened to us? We used to
be a society of intuitive inventive gifted
geniuses. Past generations have invented
two wheeled bicycles, electricity, ballpoint pens, forks, flushing toilets, light
bulbs, flashlights, French maid outfits and
toilet paper!
Have we lost our edge? Not me, I’ve had
plenty of ideas for inventions, things like:
·
The Fart-A-Radicator9000;
This device will not only blow the offending aroma back to its source, but is also
useful for starting campfires and blowing
up air mattresses!
·
The Rubber-Dubber-Dodgem;
An automobile body made entirely out
of high impact foam rubber! No matter
what you run into there’s no damage! Not
to you, your car, or anyone else’s property! It will even bounce off those pesky
drunken trees that like to jump out and
play chicken with you!
Then there’s one of my newest ideas I
wrote about it in my article “Old… Snarp
Style!”
·
The Cane From Hell:
This little baby comes equipped with an
mp3 player built in, with stereo surround
sound! A cigar lighter, a LED flashlight,
an aerosol fart eradicating spray canister, a
built in cell phone, proximity alerts function, a cattle prod electrically charged tip
that shoots bolts of lightning with thunder
sound effects, and at the press of a button
an angry clowns voice shouting obscenities!
No Geezer should be without one!
So what has our intuitive inventive gifted
generation contributed? Computer Dating? Oh please, artificial intelligence is
no match for natural stupidity, I should
know!
