On my honor, I will try:
to serve God and my country,
to help people at all times,
and to live by the Girl Scout Law.
The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.
Our Mission
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage,
confidence and character,
who make the world a better place.

WELCOME!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thank you for considering sending your girl
to Camp Kaufmann! You may be thinking that
camp will be a nice getaway from the city, an
opportunity to spend quality time with your
daughter, a place to enjoy classic camp activities like savoring a s’more or swimming on a hot
summer’s day and you’d be right to think of all
of those things! Although, Camp Kaufmann has
much more to offer you and your daughter than
just your typical, fun, summer experience.
Our experienced camp staff is committed to
bringing your girls a quality program that helps
them become stronger leaders and advocates
for their environment. Camp is a place for you
and your girls to share an experience unlike
most you could find in the city. We help girls discover the natural world, and connect with other
girls and outdoor enthusiasts in the hopes that
they will take action in their own communities.
Our program is based on the National Girl Scout
Leadership Experience. Your daughter’s experience can have amazing outcomes:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Girls develop a strong sense of self.
Girls develop positive values.
Girls gain practical life skills.
Girls seek challenges in the world.
Girls develop critical thinking.
Girls develop healthy relationships.
Girls can resolve conflicts.
Girls advance diversity in a multicultural world.
Girls feel connected to their communities, locally and globally.
Girls can identify community needs.
Girls are resourceful problem solvers.
Girls advocate for themselves and others, locally and globally.
Girls educate and inspire others to act.
Girls fee empowered to make a difference in the world.
Camp is a quintessential part of the Girl Scouting program. Juliette Low understood the importance of teaching girls environmental advocacy through outdoor programming. Camping was among the first Girl Scouting programs ever! As you
read through this brochure, remember that Camp Kaufmann will not only give your daughter a memorable summer, but a
true leadership experience as well. We hope to see you this summer!
Sincerely,
Karen Lundgard
Director of Camp

WEEKEND GETAWAYS
Experience camp with your mom or troop!
WEEKEND GETAWAYS
What is a Summer Weekend Getaway?
Summer Camp Weekend Getaways are for girls ages 5-17 accompanied
by their mom, other significant adult female or troop leader. All girls must
be registered Girl Scout members. If you haven’t registered for the year,
please submit a registration form with the $15 fee when you sign up for
camp. Summer Camp Weekend Getaways offer lodging, meals and a
wide range of activities led by experienced staff members. Campers arrive on Friday between noon and 5:30pm and depart on Sunday at 11 am.
On Friday, the pool will open at 1pm and close at 5 pm. Arrive at camp by 4
pm to enjoy a swim. Fishing, crafts and group games will also be available
on Friday. Tours of Camp Kaufmann will be available for first time campers.
When are the Weekend Getaways?
This year, you can choose from five different Weekend Getaway sessions:
• June 5-7
Wild West theme
• June 12-14
Luau theme
• June 19-21
Fiesta theme
• June 26-28
60s theme
• July 10-12
Hollywood theme
Who can go to a Summer Weekend Getaway?
All registered Girl Scouts are welcome at a Weekend Getaway. Girls may participate in one of two ways: through “Mom and Me”
experience (mothers with a daughter or daughters) or the troop experience (volunteers with girls).
How much does it cost?
Everyone who registers by April 1 will get our early bird special price of $110 per person and after April 1 the cost will be $130. Our
commitment to provide high standards, good value and a traditional Girl Scout Leadership Experience means that we try to
provide an affordable experience to all Girl Scouts. It’s important to start budgeting for camp early and include your girls in the
process. For information on financial aid and saving ideas, please
visit www.girlscoutsnyc.org.
Do I get my own cabin?
During Weekend Getaways you reserve beds, not cabins or houses. If your group does not completely fill a cabin or house, we will
pair you up with other troops or other “mom and me” participants.
Please talk to your entire group in advance. Everyone must come
prepared to share space and get along. Campers will be placed in
a house or cabin according to their age. Daisies and Brownie girls
will be given the first opportunity for houses and log cabins. Juniors
will mostly be given log cabins. Cadettes and Seniors will mostly be
given wooden cabins. Please expect to share accommodations with
other campers, and have the wonderful opportunity to make new
friends! Please make sure you and your troop come to camp prepared to live in a cabin in the woods with no T.V. You will eat traditional camp food and try new activities with your girls. You will also
share your space with your new friends and have an amazing adventure to last a lifetime. For more information on lodging, visit www.
girlscoutsnyc.org/camp.

WEEKEND GETAWAYS
What about orientation?
When you arrive at Camp Kaufmann your entire group will attend an orientation before beginning activities. Every camper
young and old, new or returning, will attend. The orientation will give you valuable information about activities and safety. If you
arrive before 4 pm on Friday, you will have the chance to swim after our orientation. If you arrive after 4pm your swimtime will
be on Saturday. Other activities will be available on Fridays, and the Trading Post will be open then. For new campers, there will
be Camp Kaufmann tours scheduled throughout the day. You will receive your complete weekend itinerary at your orientation.
Is transportation provided?
Although the council does not provide transportation you still have several options to get to camp.
• Drive to camp - we have plenty of parking!
• Order a bus for your group. Visit www.girlscoutsnyc.org/camp for a full list of approved vendors.
• Take the train! Take the Metro North – Harlem line to the Patterson Station. Camp is about fifteen minutes away via car. The
Pawling Taxi Company can get you to camp from there. Their number is 845.877.9595.
What are my program choices?
A weekend at Camp Kaufmann is packed with fun and challenging activities. Come prepared to spend most of the day outside,
rain or shine. We want to offer all campers an experience that is full of fun and learning. Please look at the program choices
carefully and work with your girl(s) to decide your program focus. If you are coming as a troop and all of the girls are the same
age, they should decide together what they want to do and mark it on the application. If your troop is made up of girls of different ages please have one volunteer for each age group. If two different age levels decide to stay together, the older girls will do
a younger girl activity. Everyone will get a swim time and free time in their program. All girls will receive a Camp Kaufmann patch.
Do I stay with my girls all of the time?
Yes! Girls must be supervised at all times by accompanying adults during Summer Camp Weekend Getaways. Girl Scout
Troops must have a minimum of two adults with them. Additional adults should be added in accordance with Safety-Wise
guidelines. For troops attending Summer Camp Weekend Getaways, one adult accompanying the troop (who may also be the
leader) must hold current certification from one of the following: American Red Cross, American Heart Association First Aid
and Community CPR, or be a physician, registered nurse, licensed nurse, paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician. The
certificate-holder must be at least 18 years old. A copy of the certification should be attached to the Camp Application Form.

MINI SLEEPAWAY
Experience camp on your own!
MINI-SLEEPAWAY ADVENTURE
What is Mini-Sleepaway Adventure?
Our Mini-Sleepaway Adventure Camp is for Brownies, Juniors, and
Cadette-age girls (entering grades 3-10). Mini-Sleepaway offers girls
the chance to experience a world of adventure and discovery. Girls will
spend their days learning leadership skills, making friends and sharing the
excitement of going away with other girls. Campers will have cook-outs,
participate in team-building activities, and enjoy traditional Girl Scout
activities. We welcome non-registered girls to take part in the program
as long as they submit a registration form with their application. Girls
should be encouraged to invite their non-Girl Scout friends. Girls will live
in tent cabins with their peers and our experienced camp counselors will
guide them through activities. Throughout the week, girls will work towards badges and will be involved in Take Action projects!
When is Mini-Sleepaway Adventure?
There are fice Mini-Sleepaway Adventure sessions, and three program tracks, depending on your girl’s level:
• Night Owls for Cadettes Offered June 5-7, June 12-14, June 19-21, June 26-28 and July 10-12
• High Adventure for Juniors Offered June 5-7, June 12-14 and June 19-21
• Water World for Brownies Offered June 26-28 and July 10-12
Who will supervise my daughter?
For Mini-Sleepaway Adventure, we have a team of trained female counselors who live at the camp site with the girls, and who
escort them to and from activities. Mini-Sleepaway Adventure campers will be supervised at all times by counselors and staff
members. Mini-Sleepaway Adventure supervision is always in accordance with Safety-Wise, American Camp Association (ACA)
and Dutchess County Department of Health guidelines.
How will my daughter get to Camp
Kaufmann?
Parents have two options:
• Option 1: Drive your daughter to camp
• Option 2: Take the Metro-North railroad to Patterson, and take a cab to
camp. Girls will be going in a group and will be chaperoned by counselors. (Parents must arrange their own transportation back to the Patterson station.)
Where will my daughter sleep?
Girls attending Mini-Sleepaway Adventure will be staying in Oakridge, which
is our “rustic” unit (with the exception of our “Night Owls” campers who will
sleep in actual tents). Please note that the unit has no electricity - the girls
will enjoy a true outdoor experience in our tent cabins, which have canvas
walls and a wooden roof. Girls will cook all of their meals in the unit and will
learn various outdoor cooking techniques, as well as safe fire-building.
Can my daughter bunk with her friends?
Some girls come to Camp Kaufmann individually, some come with their
best friend, and others come with their troop. Our aim is to give girls new
experiences and for them to make new friends. Each girl can choose one
camp buddy if requested beforehand. We do not place entire groups together, experience tells us that girls have a more well-rounded experience when they meet new girls, and do not stay with the
girls they know.
SUMMER 2014 AT CAMP KAUFMANN: PAGE 12
MINI-SLEEPAWAY ADVENTURE
What activities will my daughter
do while at Camp Kaufmann?
Every Mini-Sleepaway camper will enjoy the traditional activities of swimming, hiking, campfires, singing and making lifelong friendships. Additionally, each age level will enjoy a specific environmentally themed program. You will see that each
program is specifically designed so girls can earn the Naturalist badges and participate in activities from the It’s Your Planet
- Love It! Journey books.

REFUND
POLICY
GSGNY refund policy applies to all Troop
Leaders, Trip Coordinators and parents.
Please make sure your entire group receives this information before they register.
Please consider your reservation as a
commitment as it is, in effect, claiming
space for your girl(s) in our program. Request for refunds of camp or bus fees
must be submitted in writing six weeks
prior to your camp date. Refunds of camp
fees will not be considered after that date.
However, we will review any request due to
medical circumstances that are substantiated with appropriate documentation.
All deposits are non refundable. Your deposit is your reservation for your space
at Camp Kaufmann. When your reservation is made GSGNY commits financial
resources for staffing and supplies to provide a quality program.
Camp balances not paid in full three weeks
before your camping date will automatically cancel your reservation and your deposit will not be refunded. All financial obligations must be resolved at the Council
office three weeks prior to your camping
date. We cannot accept payment of the
balance at camp.
