A message from Mayor Edwin M. Lee
I am proud to say that San Francisco is a city where world-class art is part of the fabric of everyday life.
Nowhere is that more apparent than at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
As one walks through the terminals, waits for a plane or greets arrivals, one is treated to a public art
collection that captures the imagination and artistic vibrancy of our city. An international city known
for its creativity, innovation, and cultural diversity, San Francisco is expressed here in a
multiplicity of styles and materials.
The SFO collection was acquired over 30 years under the leadership of the San Francisco Arts
Commission. As an early innovator in incorporating the display of fine art in our airport terminals,
our city’s public art program at SFO continues to serve as an inspiration and a model for similar
programs in other metropolitan airports throughout the world.
SFO is the gateway to one of the most beloved and iconic destinations in the world, and what better way
to set the stage for our visitors than with a sophisticated, engaging, and thought-provoking public art
collection.
I hope you enjoy discovering the wealth of art at SFO.

A Brief History of SFO’s Public Art Collection
The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC), a city agency, launched SFO’s Public Art Program in 1977 with the construction of Terminal 3. Over the course of the next ten years, it purchased or commissioned over 60 works for Terminals 1,
2 and 3.
Later, the International Terminal, completed in 2000, became home to another 17 major works, commissioned and
created specifically for the new facility’s state-of-the-art lobbies, corridors and gate rooms.
In 2011, with the renovation of Terminal 2, the Arts Commission debuted five new major installations and re-installed
artwork in the airport’s collection that was historically sited in the terminal or that was in storage. All of the works in
SFO’s public art collection were commissioned in accordance with San Francisco’s percent for art ordinance, which
provides for art enrichment allocation equivalent to 2% percent of the construction cost of a new or renovated civic
structure.
About the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Public Art Program
The SFAC is the city agency that champions the arts in San Francisco. We believe that a creative cultural environment is
essential to the city’s well-being. Established by charter in 1932, the SFAC integrates the arts into all aspects of city life.
Programs include: Civic Art Collection, Civic Design Review, Community Arts & Education, Cultural Equity Grants, Public
Art, SFAC Galleries and Street Artists Licensing. The agency’s core values are committed to the principle that all residents have equal access to arts experiences in all disciplines, that programs are provided comprehensively and evenly
throughout the city and that they are innovative and of the highest quality.
The Public Art Program was established with the passage of the Arts Enrichment Ordinance in 1969, one of the first of
its kind in the country. The Public Art Program seeks to promote a diverse and stimulating cultural environment. The
Program encourages the creative interaction of artists, designers, city staff, officials and community members
during the design of city projects in order to develop public art that is specific to the site and meaningful to the
community. From the airport to the zoo to neighborhood parks and libraries, the Public Art Program ensures that San
Francisco residents, visitors and employees have access to world-class art in everyday settings.
How to Use this Catalogue
This catalogue is organized by terminal. Each artwork is assigned a number, which can easily be identified on the terminal map located at the beginning of each section. The numbers assigned to each object are derived from their
accession number, so they do not follow numerical order. Rather, the artworks are presented in the order that
travelers might encounter them as they move through the space. Black object numbers mean that the artwork is
located on level 2, departure and ticketing. Gray object numbers signify that the objects are located on level 1,
arrival and baggage claim. White object numbers refer to level 3, which is the mezzanine.

CHRISTOPHER LANE
American, born in 19XX
Night Passage
Christopher Lane’s paintings aspire to capture transitory
sensations of light and color. In a statement about his work,
the artist said “Most of my work is divided into sections
of space, each section becoming a moment or moments in
time. Much of my inspiration has come from observation of
nature and the study of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy
and aesthetics.”

JAY DEFEO
American, (1929-1989)
Loop Series #4: Masquerade in Black
1974-1975
Jay DeFeo was a central figure among San Francisco’s
Beat generation artists in the 1950s and 1960s. Inspired by
myth, magic, poetry and jazz, DeFeo is best known for her
legendary masterpiece, The Rose (1958-1966), now in the
collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New
York. Loop Series #4: Masquerade in Black is part
of a series of work DeFeo created in the 1970s that used
images of mechanical objects painted in a forceful manner
to suggest an animate being.

MANUEL VILLAMOR
American, born in British Honduras in 1928
Untitled
1983
Born in Belize, British Honduras, Manuel Villamor’s paintings are often
inspired by pre-Columbian themes. Here luminescent and phantasmagoric
shapes seemingly emerge from a background of softly colored mists.

Behind Ted McMann’s Garage
1976
The artist describes his work as being “oriented toward the sensuous consumption and re-interpretation of the world I see.”
Best known for his photo-based realism, Torlakson’s imagery has centered on everyday life, often depicting such urban images as trucks, moving
vans and filling stations.

In the early 1960s, Thiebaud was acclaimed as one of the defining
practitioners of Pop Art, and has continued to be considered
one of California’s most important and influential artists. In the
late 1970s, the artist concentrated on a series of San Francisco
cityscapes that became a signature theme. Created from a
combination of direct observation and memory, these paintings
present a dizzying perspective of San Francisco’s extraordinary
topography.

Robert Bechtle’s early work was as a Bay Area
figurative painter, but in the 1970s he received
national acclaim as a Photorealist. His use of
ordinary subject matter, harsh lighting and
unstudied composition creates a sense of
ironic distance typical of the genre, but Bechtle’s
paintings also have a more personal quality.
Shown here is Benton Street in San Francisco,
one of the familiar local neighborhoods Bechtle
frequently paints.

American, born in 1939
The Hesperides
San Francisco Arts Commission
Pre-security: Yes
Area: Boarding Area F; Gate 68-90

1981
Bruce Beasley has lived in the Bay Area since his student days at the University of California, Berkeley. Beasley gained recognition early in his
career for his innovative work in large-scale acrylic sculpture. He turned to working with metals in the mid-1970s. The Hesperides was one of
the first large scale works commissioned for the Airport. While not meant to represent any particular “flying machine,” the artist’s intent was to
evoke a sense of lightness, movement, and the grace of flight.

MICHAEL DVORTCSAK
American, born in 1938
Sublimens
Michael Dvortcsak describes the intent in this painting as follows:
“In the early 1980s I began a series of imaginary landscapes. This
one is from the point of view of a hovering eagle. How grand it must
be to see for a hundred miles from up so high, going at your own
pace.”

RAYMOND SAUNDERS
American, born in 1934
Letter’s Missing

As an artist, Saunders relies on his own keen observations
and experiences: “The important thing about doing art is that
I also live… and the more I bring into myself, the more I have
a desire and need to translate it into something.” This work is
representative of the artist’s dramatic use of color, gestural
strokes, elegant line, and the collaged remnants of everyday
life to provide compositional, textural, and spatial contrasts.

NANCE O’BANION
American, born in 1949
Billboard Series
1981
Nance O’Banion was trained as a weaver, but began working with handmade
paper as a sculptural medium in 1970. Since then she has become one of the
best known artists working in that medium. Change and transformation are
important themes for O’Banion, and Billboard Series seems to respond to
the transitory nature of the Airport itself as the piece appears to change as
the viewer moves around it.

SAM FRANCIS
American, (1923 - 1994)
Untitled
1980
Sam Francis began painting while hospitalized at Letterman Hospital
in San Francisco, where he studied privately with well-known Bay Area
painter David Park. Later, as a student at U.C. Berkeley, he developed his
distinctive brand of abstract expressionism. In 1950, he left for Paris
and lived in Europe and Japan before settling in Santa Monica, CA in
1962. He was among the first of the American Abstract Expressionists to
be exhibited in Europe, where his work was very influential.
This commissioned painting is a good example of the artist’s signature
stained and dripped “cells” of saturated color.

WILLIAM T. WILEY
American, born in 1937
Void
1977
Known for his humorous use of puns and parody, William T. Wiley’s
work defined the nucleus of the Bay Area Funk movement in the 1960s.
Wiley says of his work during this time: “It suddenly became clear to
me that art was what I’d heard on the radio that day, or something
I saw outside. Suddenly, anything was potential.” This work was
originally created and installed as an outdoor billboard prior to being
purchased by the Arts Commission for the Airport.

VITO ACCONCI
American, born in 1940
Two Wings for Wall and Person

Pre-security: Yes
Area: Elevator Lobby
Level: 1 - Arrival/Baggage Claim
1981
Vito Acconci began his artistic career as a poet, and came to national prominence in the early 1970s as an artist working in performance and
conceptual art. Acconci’s work is often characterized by a direct involvement of the viewer as an element in the artwork. In this etching, rather
than just looking at the wings, the artist suggests that the viewer has a place within the wings; lean back against the wall and see if you can fly!

“I’ve always been attracted and fascinated by birds and
their freedom through flight,” says Bob Zoell.
Combining his lifelong passion for language and birds,
the artist creates a playful world of singing birds sitting
on branches composed from letters and punctuation
marks. The top and bottom frosted glass panels feature
airplanes and typography, rendered in a simplified
graphic style. Together these images create a code of
abstract icons intended to delight visitors of all ages.
