Here was a band who had signed to a major label and had made their first so called 'commercial album' but had far from sold out instead they had pursued further their unique path and conquered dance floors in the process. The production is mind-blowing to this day and the combination of flood and cv of course is explosive. Cv's music to me to this day is the sexiest music ever recorded and this goes for all of their music, even the early albums. There is something reaching deeper and it still expands my perception of what music can deliver. Then there are mals's deep, sexy vocals, which preceded in a way later approaches by the house pioneers such as fingers inc. etc. In wanting to combine that kind of music with soul I am in good company. As I learned later many northern bands like the human league and soft cell had a similar plan. To me Sheffield was for a time the centre of the musical universe that shaped me as a kid and made me want to do what I ended up doing to this day. The sheer power of the crackdown album made me always want to do cover versions knowing full well that no one could beat the originals ever. Mal and I had been chatting for a number of years (I could never really believe I had actually met one of my all-time heroes), planning to do this and that together and now as mal puts it: 'we finally did it'. I jokingly told him in a recent e-mail that I had just finished the job of selling cv out to disco and Mal thought it was hilarious. In fact however the remixes I got back from the team of remixers that were recruited by apc's simon iddol blew my mind far beyond disco-interests. They are not just remixes but worthy and artistic reworks of the tracks we had produced. This elevated the project for me and I could wholeheartedly get behind it. It is known that I don't release many records and one of the reasons is that I am only releasing things when I feel that the quality is right and some kind of new ground is explored. The remixes made me believe in this project on a whole new level. Having said that the original versions we produced had already gotten me pretty convinced we were on the right wavelength. I had contacted maertini broes in Berlin. I felt that their sound simply excelled and was more convincing certainly than a lot of stuff that comes out of Berlin, and had the kind of electronic elements I love. Lusty Zanzibar had released a record, which I had come across and loved, and as we shared the same distributor I asked whom he was and was told that he was a cv fan. That settled things and he took to the task in no time, delivering a melodic and epic nu-disco fest. In delivering the 2 EPs 'sold out to disco' and 'darkness restored' I hope to show that the best of songs inspire a creativity that can make you want to shake your booty or massaging your cerebral parts equally. Enjoy. billie ray martin Stephen Mallinder: “Billie and I had been planning to work together for a number of years and now we finally did it.” BRM: “I could never do justice to the original songs but can have a damn good time trying.” artwork & photography: j.abromeit the crackdown written by stephen mallinder and richard kirk published by universal music just fascination written by stephen mallinder and richard kirk published by universal music special thanks to wolfgang tillmans www.billieraymartin.com www.myspace.com/lustyzanzibar www.maertinibroes.de www.myspace.com/mikevamp disco activisto records berlin 2010 distributed by believe digital www.believedigital.com
