Indiana’s community foundations hit halfway
mark of $66 million matching grant challenge
PLYMOUTH — Indiana counties are a little richer today.
In July 2014, Lilly Endowment Inc. announced a statewide
challenge grant to community foundations, totaling $66 million, with incentives that include a $1-for-$1 dollar match.
Those incentives have worked. Community foundations
have already raised more than 50 percent toward the match.
“With this grant, and the different match opportunities,
we are projecting more than $130 million will be raised for
our communities. We still have a way to go but are thrilled
with such a strong start,” says Rosemary Dorsa, vice president of the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance, a membership
association that supports Indiana’s community foundations.
The Endowment crafted the Giving Indiana Funds for
Tomorrow (GIFT) grant opportunity to allow community
foundations to have flexibility in how the charitable funds
can be used in each community, and offer meaningful incentives that encourage community members to get involved.
The local community foundation, Marshall County
Community Foundation (MCCF), is eligible for $500,000 if
it meets its match challenge by March 31, 2016. In Marshall
County contributions to restricted funds (for specific purposes) were matched 50 cents on the dollar and the goal for
this portion of the match has been reached. The Marshall
County Community Foundation has an additional $157,000
to raise in unrestricted funds (such as MCCF’s Community
Fund); these gifts may be matched $1 for $1 to complete the
match goal.
“The Marshall County Community Foundation is excited
to be a part of this opportunity,” says Linda Yoder, MCCF
executive director. “Once we meet the challenge, we will
have $1,250,000 to invest in our community.”
This GIFT initiative matching grant greatly enhances the
local community and Indiana as a whole. In 1990, when
the first GIFT grant was made, Indiana was home to only
a dozen community foundations. Now, there are 94 community foundations and county affiliate funds in Indiana,
serving each of Indiana’s 92 counties. Local leaders and
community volunteers make decisions that positively
address their own unique community needs.
“The grant is in line with a long-time vision of Indiana
communities growing their capacity to make critical decisions for their own people now and in the future,” said
Dorsa.
Funds are invested to grow over time, creating a greater
impact year after year. This matching opportunity is the
sixth phase of the Endowment’s GIFT initiative for Indiana
community foundations. The GIFT initiative was designed
Build Now With...
to help local Indiana communities develop the philanthropic
capacity to address their own needs and challenges. Since
1990, the value of Indiana’s community foundations that
have regularly participated in GIFT grew from $30 million to
almost $2 billion, and more than $915 million went back into
the communities through local grants.
This new matching challenge continues that growth
and could add about $132 million in new dollars, which
would generate $6 million or more in additional grants
every year…forever. But, donors are needed. “This generous match opportunity is exciting because anyone can get
involved in a big way,” says Dorsa. “Many gifts to community endowments will be matched $1 for $1, which effectively doubles that donor’s gift.”
The $1-for-$1 match includes a focus on building community endowments that are unrestricted and have the
greatest flexibility to respond to local needs from year to
year, decade to decade. The Endowment’s match will be
in amounts from $500,000 to $2 million, depending on the
population of the county.
Each community foundation or affiliate fund has designed
its own challenge within the parameters of the grant and
should be contacted for local eligibility. Typically, gifts
qualifying for matching funds must consist of contributions
of cash or property which can include marketable securities, cash equivalents, and real property. Multi-year pledges
are also able to be matched as long as each gift is received
by the community foundation before March 31, 2016.
Since 1991, donors to the Marshall County Community
Foundation have built the community’s assets currently
valued at more than $32 million and have returned
over $12 million to Marshall County communities in
grants and scholarships. For

Building simple machines
PHOTO PROVIDED
Third-graders in Mrs. Strycker’s class at Triton Elementary School have been learning about simple machines and
how they help make work easier. Students created small machines out of paper, paper clips, straws, craft sticks,
brads, rubber bands, and note cards to help learn how to recognize and use a wedge, lever, inclined plane, pulley,
screw, and wheel and axle. These creations were added to pockets labeled in students’ science notebooks. They
also watched examples in nature and real life with short video clips before creating a foldable book full of pictures
and examples of each machine. Teams of students were able to create actual replicas of these simple machines
with kits and test how each device could make work easier by pulling small weights on them. Mrs. Strycker was
very thankful to get Mrs. Baer, Mrs. McAndrews, and Mrs. Schaetzle as parent helpers to work with teams as they
built each model. Students used what they have learned to create a solution using simple machines to solve a
real world problem involving a wolf that needed captured later in the week.
Arianah Walters and Alli Barber display their simple machine.

Plymouth Lions announce scholarship winners, induct new members
PLYMOUTH — District Governor Marty
J. Juel and wife Lion Jeanine were on hand
at the May meeting of the Plymouth Lions
Club to induct new members.
Sean Surrisi and Alicia Torres were formally installed by the district governor who
reminded all present that it has been nearly
100 years since Melvin Jones, founder of
Lions Club International, first encouraged
people to address the needs of their communities and the world. He explained that
the possibilities of service are endless and
so are the lives that are touched. Melvin
Jones once said himself, “You can’t get
very far until you start doing something for
somebody else.”
The Nelson’s Golden Glow fundraiser

pated were commended. These are the
type of events that allow the Lions Club to
award two $500 scholarships to qualified
high school students each year. This year
the winners were announced and are Cayla
Jolly, and Jocelyn Rico. Congratulations
were expressed to both young ladies and
they will be welcomed and formally con-
gratulated at the next meeting of the Lions
Club.
In other business, District Governor Juel
presented the Chevron Awards for service
to Manny Guerrero and Devon Stull for
15 years of service, Vivian Blankenship for
25 years of service, and Larry McCan for
30 years of active service to the Plymouth
Lions Club.

Purdue expert: Statewide planting pace
little changed over past 20 years
WEST LAFAYETTE — Despite
advances in farm machinery and crop
management practices, the maximum
number of Indiana corn and soybean
acres planted per week in 2015 is
not much different than 20 years ago,
according to a new article by Purdue
Extension corn specialist Bob Nielsen.
“Certainly, individual farmers can
plant more acres of corn and soybeans
per day with today’s large field equipment than 20 years ago,” Nielsen said.
“This fact encourages optimism that
delayed starts to the planting season can be overcome by the ability
of today’s modern planters to plant
a greater percentage of the state’s
crop per week when ‘push comes to
shove.’”
Nielsen’s review of historical statewide planting progress as reported
by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture’s National
Agricultural
Statistics
Service, however, suggests
that there has been little
improvement in the pace of
planting much of the state’s
total crop acreage. He said a possible
reason could be that there are fewer
farmers planting a similar number of
acres statewide today compared with
years ago.
“The number of corn and soybean
growers in Indiana has decreased over
time, and those remaining are farming more acres than they did 20 years
ago,” he said. “Even though farm
machinery is larger today and covers more acres per day than 20 years
ago, fewer farmers are farming more
acres and so total planting progress,
in terms of percent of total acres per
week, remains fairly unchanged.”
The article, “Corn and Soybean
Planting Progress in Indiana Over
the Years,” appears online at www.
kingcorn.org/news/timeless/
PlantingPace.html.
Nielsen said the quickest corn planting week in the past 20 years was
in 2001, when 2.9 million acres were
planted in a single week, accounting
for half that year’s total crop.
In 2014, Hoosier corn farmers planted 2.4 million acres in a single week, or
about 41 percent of the total crop.
The most soybeans acres planted per
week also happened in 2001, when 2.4
million acres were planted in a week,
about 42 percent of that year’s crop.
Nielsen’s Chat ‘n Chew Café blog is
available at www.kingcorn.org/cafe.

Cause of gum disease
Gingivitis usually begins when
plaque, the sticky, colorless film of bacteria and food particles that constantly
forms on your teeth, is not cleaned away every day.
It is hard to see plaque, but a harmless dye stains it red. When plaque stays
on your teeth for two or three days, it can harden into tartar. Tartar can
irritate your gums and lead to gingivitis.
Gum disease can also be caused by certain medical conditions, some
medications, trauma, smoking or chewing tobacco. During pregnancy,
hormonal changes can contribute to gum disease.
Examination
To determine if you have gingivitis, we examine your mouth and look for
red, swollen or bleeding gums.
Because gingivitis can advance to periodontal disease, we may take x-rays
to check your bone level.
We may also check the depth of the sulcus around each tooth. A sulcus is the
tiny groove between the case of the visible part of your tooth and the gum.
The good news is that gingivitis is reversible. The sooner we catch it, the
better chance you have of keeping your smile for a lifetime.

Symptoms of gingivitis
Gingivitis, also known as gum disease, is inflammation of the gums. It is
often the first stage of periodontal disease.
Some of the warning symptoms of gingivitis include:
• bleeding when brushing or flossing
• redness where the gums &
tooth meet
• swollen gums
• bad breath
Treatment
If you have gingivitis, we thoroughly clean your teeth and may schedule you
for more frequent cleanings. We may also suggest a special mouthwash or
rinse and discuss your homecare technique.

Mercy
Mercy is a beautiful girl that is about 2 years old. She is very loving and affectionate. She
is a very smart girl and enjoys playing fetch. She will “go get her toy” and “drop it” on
command. She is also house and crate trained. Mercy seems to be okay with most other
dogs, but we suggest that she is introduced to potential canine siblings before adoption.
She likely would not do well in a home with a cat. Her previous owners said she didn’t do
well with small children.
All dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, heartworm tested, on heartworm
prevention, and microchipped before adoption.
Adoption Fee: $200

You deserve a factual look at . . .
Mr. President, Stop the Iran Deal Now!
Iran is the world’s leading exporter of Islamic terror and our greatest enemy.
Your deal fails to keep Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. It’s time for a reset.
Iran’s constitution commands it to conquer the world through Islamic jihad, and Iran increases its bloody Middle East
conquests daily. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei regularly leads chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”
Can we afford an agreement that actually paves the way for a nuclear-armed Iran?
Americans want. Here’s what that deal must look like:
What are the facts?
1. End Iran’s nuclear program. This means shutting
Iran’s terrorist aggression makes it the greatest threat to
world peace—and America’s greatest enemy. The Islamic down Iran’s Fordow and Arak nuclear facilities and ceasing
Republic has sown seeds of global jihad for decades, killing all centrifuge-enabled nuclear R&D. Iran refuses. Why?
2. Export Iran’s nuclear stockpiles. Iran has no peaceful
thousands of Americans, Europeans, South Americans,
Arabs and Israelis worldwide since 1982, including the need of its extensive nuclear stockpiles and should ship
deaths of 241 U.S. Marines and 58 French peacekeepers in them away. It refuses this. Why?
3. Abandon development of Intercontinental Ballistic
the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings. Today, Iran sponsors
terrorist proxies, such as Hezbollah, which controls Missiles. ICBMs have only one purpose—to deliver nuclear
Lebanon and militarily backs Iran’s control of the Syrian bombs long distances, as far as to the U.S. Yet Iran refuses
government. Iran has also achieved dominance in Iraq by even to admit development of such missiles. Why?
4. Permit “anytime, anywhere” inspections. Iran must
helping the Iraqis battle the Islamic State, and most
agree that nuclear inspectors
recently it has seized control of
Yemen through its Houthi “The deal we’ll accept is that they end their can visit any suspicious site
without warning. Iran refuses
agents. Suddenly Iran has
nuclear program.”
to allow this. Why?
graduated from being the
largest state sponsor of Islamic
President Barack Obama, October 22, 2012 5. Slow easing of sanctions.
Any softening of economic
terrorism to the major Islamist
colonial power in the Middle East. Most distressingly, Iran sanctions must be spread over years, only as benchmarks
proudly trumpets its intention to “annihilate” Israel, a goal are met. Iran insists on instant sanctions relief.
6. Abandon terrorism and colonialism. Iran must cease
it asserts is “non-negotiable.”
Despite Iran’s record of terror attacks against the U.S and its global terror campaigns and its sponsorship of violent
our allies worldwide, and its open hostility to American colonial aggression.
7. Severe punishment for any violation. Any agreement
values and objectives, the White House now proposes a
nuclear arms agreement with Iran that falls shockingly must facilitate true instant “snapback” of economic
short of Mr. Obama’s 2012 promise to “prevent them from sanctions in case Iran violates this agreement.
What’s our alternative? President Obama and Secretary
acquiring a nuclear weapon.”
Not only does the proposed “Iran Deal” fail to stop Iran Kerry seem desperate to make the Iran Deal—a weak
from acquiring nuclear armaments, it permits Iran to negotiating posture that has led to weak terms. If we are to
continue developing nuclear weapons technology over the make a good deal, we must insist on the conditions above
next ten years. Even more frightening, Iran denies agreeing and be ready to walk away. No deal is better than the
to many key provisions that Secretary of State John Kerry current proposed deal, which does not fulfill Mr. Obama’s
promise to the American people. This deal, in allowing Iran
claims are essential to it.
What’s wrong with the “Iran Deal”? Iran has a long to keep its nuclear infrastructure and continue nuclear
history of lying about its nuclear activities and cheating on weapons research, is sure to start a nuclear arms race in the
agreements. Iran ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Middle East, starting with Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey.
Treaty in 1970, yet has been developing nuclear weapons— What’s more, when Iran begins to cheat on this
and lying about it—for decades. Iran also has ignored a agreement—which is likely—it may force Israel to take
U.N. Security Council demand that it suspend nuclear unilateral military action, since a nuclear-weaponized Iran
enrichment activities. In short, Iran is a bad actor on the is an existential threat to the Jewish state. Those who
world stage and can’t be trusted. President Obama criticize the proposed “Iran Deal” are often accused of
promised in 2012 that “The deal we’ll accept is that they wanting war with Iran. In fact, it is Iran’s current nuclear
end their nuclear program,” which is the deal most weapons development that is provocative and bellicose.
If we want to avoid military action against Iran—which most Americans do—we must negotiate an agreement that truly
prevents war. It’s time to set aside the current deal—which Iran has not even agreed to—and start again. We must continue
a harsh sanctions regime until Iran realizes we are serious about preventing their acquisition of nuclear weapons.

Family Centered Maternity Care
Because many family practice physicians offer obstetric, gynecologic and pediatric care,
they can be an excellent choice for mothers-to-be who prefer the continuity and
convenience of seeing one doctor for all of their healthcare needs.

When you choose a family medicine doctor for your prenatal care, labor and delivery, you
may also choose to have the same doctor care for your children, spouse or other family
members. Our family practice doctors provide pediatric care for all ages, including wellchild checks and treatment of most child-related illnesses. Additionally, they get to know
the entire family and each member’s health history, making them aware of the
physical, emotional and social issues that can affect the health of each family member.
