This Italian-born explorer and navigator, Christopher Columbus was a practicing Catholic and had a keen interest in the Bible and interpreted his missions in terms of God’s Providence, naming one of his 3 boats the “Santa Maria” in honor of Our Blessed Mother. He, perhaps the greatest explorer the planet has ever known, radiated a sense of dream, dare, excitement and energy that is part of the Italian genius. Keep in mind that, for Columbus, his voyage of discovery was a work of evangelization. On board were missionaries; his first act upon landing in the New World was to plant the cross, claim the new lands for Christ and His Church, and ask the missionaries to offer Mass. As the Roman roads provided Peter and Paul, those first apostles, and the missionaries of the first centuries the way to spread the faith, so did the seas give Columbus the chance to serve his first sovereign, Jesus Christ. As an Italian, though, Christopher Columbus was used to discovery; discovery was in his Italian nature. As an Italian, Christopher Columbus was raised to discover God in everything; God was there in His Son Jesus Christ and His Church, in liturgy and sacraments; God was there in the awe of a cathedral, a fresco by Giotto, a canticle by Francis of Assisi, a poem by Dante; God was there in a crucifix by Cimabue, music by monks, a Madonna at a street crossing, a sunset in Tuscany; God was there in the aroma of bread and the taste of local wine, the love of a wife and the embrace of children; God was there in village, family and friends. God was always there to be discovered, as Italians such as Redemptorists Alphonsus Liguori of Naples and Gerard Majella of Materdomini (whose feast is this Friday, October 16), Thomas Aquinas, Ambrose of Milan and Bonaventure had taught. Life revealed God everywhere, and no part of His creation, even though uncharted, was beyond the pale of His loving providence. I guess, had the Italian Christopher Columbus not done so, someone else could have discovered America. But it was indeed one born in Genoa, one who had the culture of Italy in his bones, who claims the title. This son of Italy realized that this discovery was not just some navigational feat with geographical, economic and political implications, but an act of faith, an act flowing from the very purpose of life: to find God everywhere, in everything, in everybody, for God is radiant, alive, brimming over with love and excitement, just waiting for us to discover Him and claim Him. Happy Columbus Day! God Bless America and God Bless Us All Fr. Tizio Email: [email protected] Pastors Pun: What do you call someone who puts poison in a person's corn flakes? A cereal killer. Carr's new study "A Search for Wisdom & Spirit," is perhaps the first sustained work by a theologian on Thomas Merton's theology of the self. Her book focuses on Merton's relentless search for the place and meaning of one's true self in relation to one's quest for union with God. Merton's reflections evidence a profound concern for the social issues of the world. It is in the integration of the interior and the social that Merton addresses Ranger Rosary some of the deepest needs of We are so grateful to be able to contemporary readers. October 11, 2015 October Environmental Forum on Papal Encyclical Thursday October 22nd is the parish open forum on Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si. All are welcome to attend to hear a variety of perspectives on the document and to ask questions of the panel. This week the focus is on the connection between environmental degradation and social degradation. Pope Francis’s states, “Nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live. We are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with itO We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature.” He reminds us that human societies depend on natural resources to provide a stable foundation. By using natural resources unsustainably human societies are degraded and made vulnerable to collapse. Pope Francis shows us that to serve and protect humanity we must also protect and sustain the natural resources all humans need to survive. 40 Days for Life Campaign September 23 - November 1 Be a Voice for the Voiceless. Feliz Columbus Day! Dios Bendiga América y Dios Nos Bendiga a Todos!! Pr.
