NAF Annual Meeting of Members June 17, 2016 1 Chairman’s Report 2015 Jan J.H. Joosten, Chair June 17, 2016 2 2015 Accomplishments • Organized over 70 business, cultural and social networking events through our chapters in Boston, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Western Michigan, Northern California, Southern California and The Netherlands. Events are designed to be self-supporting. • Supported 36 exhibitions and other cultural events through $122,005 in cultural grants. • Eleven grants totaling $1,082,225 to art historians as well as Dutch cultural and educational institutions through the NAF Friends Fund Program • Southern California Chapter organized a three-city concert tour by finalists of the classical music Princess Christina Concours. 3 • 11th Annual Prinses Christina Concours Concert Tour April/May 2015 in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Vancouver Many thanks to Dick and Yvonne van Hoepen for their many years of commitment to this event! Svenja Staats – Violin, Florian Verweij – Piano, Sander de Jong - Tenor 4 2015 Accomplishments • 17 students received NAF-Fulbright Fellowships for post-graduate studies in the Netherlands or the U.S. for a total of $314,503. • 12 Dutch and American students received interest-free loans for an aggregate amount of $132,500 to pursue advanced studies. • Four Dutch students spent a summer as interns on Capitol Hill and at George Mason University, funded by the annual NAF Ambassadors’ Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., in the amount of $36,802. • First two NAF Research Fellows in Childhood Cancer Selected – Marjon S. van Ruiten, Utrecht University/ Harvard Medical School (left) Eveline van Kampen, Leiden University/University of California San Francisco (right) 5 2015 Accomplishments • Netherlands-based NAF Alumni Committee jump-starts new programs and activities. • Netherlands-based NAF-Biz networking events are launched. • NAF office moves from Wall Street to mid-town Manhattan. • NAF upgrades and streamlines its computing environment, digitizing most files. • NAF signs Library Donation Agreement with The New York Historical Society covering the care and preservation of its archives. 6 • NAF archives sent to The New York Historical Society Agreement signed December 2, 2015 7 2015 Accomplishments • NAF provides back-office support to the American Friends of the Mauritshuis. • Five new agreements (for total of 16) with Dutch educational or cultural institutions for collaboration in U.S. fundraising with almost $980K in donoradvised funds received and over $958K in grants made New Friends in 2015 Naturalis Biodiversity Center American Friends of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (National Museum of Antiquities) Independent Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam The Ocean Cleanup Fund 8 • Friends Fund: The Ocean Cleanup Fund The Ocean Cleanup performing research in the Great Pacific Patch in Summer 2015 9 Fundraising • Boston Mid-Winter Fundraising Dinner Dedham Country & Polo Club January 31, 2015 Raises $8,200 for NAF Programs NAF-Fulbright Fellow Elisabeth Koning with Fulbright Almunus Douglas Holmes 10 Fundraising • Netherland-America Foundation Ambassadors’ Awards Dinner May 14, 2015 Raises over $82,000 for NAF programs • • Organized in conjunction with Holland on the Hill and the Embassy of the Netherlands in the U.S. Bill Tucker steps down as Dinner Chair and is succeeded by Jim Dykstra Kirk Dornbush, Fay Hartog-Levin, Anna Roosevelt and honoree William vanden Heuvel Honorees: • William van den Heuvel , Founder and Chair Emeritus, T Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute • Paul Polman, Chief Executive, Unilever • U.S. Representative Rodney P. Frelinghuysen, Chairman, House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee 11 Fundraising • The 5th Annual NAF Heritage Society Netherland Club of New York May 19, 2015 Laying foundations for a solid financial future for the NAF NAF Heritage Society Luncheon at the Netherland Club of New York 12 Fundraising • Dutch American Heritage Day Gala Dinner Dance November 15, 2015 Honored Hans van Alebeek, Nike's Corporate Vice President of Global Operations and Technology Dinner guests at The California Club in Los Angeles 13 Fundraising • The 34th Annual Peter Stuyvesant Ball November 20, 2015 Raises over $300,000 for NAF programs Opening dance: HRH Princess Margriet of the Netherlands and Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven at the Plaza Hotel in New York 14 Potential New Initiative: Visa Sponsorship for Internships • Many Dutch students would like to do an internship or traineeship in the U.S. • Visas for internships are provided through “sponsor organizations” designated by the U.S. State Department. • There is currently no organization that focuses on making these visas available for Dutch students. • Fulbright Center in Amsterdam has asked the NAF to become a “sponsor organization”. • Program should eventually become self-funding as the NAF may charge a fee to the employer or the student: - Employers will be required to become NAF members - Fees collected should cover the cost of additional staffing needed • Pro bono legal advice provided by Greenberg Traurig (through Andrew Enschedé). 15 Treasurer’s Report 2015 C. Jurjan Wouda Kuipers, Treaurer New York 17 June 2016 16 Audited Financial Statements Fiscal 2015 17 Overall 2015 Results • • • • • • Small net operating deficit of $9,574 Total Support and Revenue rose significantly, from $1,015,745 to $1,683,989 • Due to NAF’s Friends Fund Program income • Equal amount of related FF Program spending Events income slightly below 2014 S18k higher management, general and fundraising expenses Depreciation in the NAF’s investment funds Net assets decreased by $245,664 to $4,978,182 18 Revenues • $1,246,999 of contributions and grants (2014: $562,056) • $190,616 membership income (budget $185,000) • Changes to NAF’s membership management system • Corporate membership below budget • Almost $980,000 of Collaboration Agreement revenues • $50,000 donation Sam. Jurjan Wouda Kuipers 28 Five-Year NAF Investment Returns Aggregate Portfolio Values 12/31/10 $3,243,295 12/31/15 $3,763,481 Net cash withdrawals — $372,000 • 5-year Compound Average Growth Rate (CAGR) — 5.59% • Benchmark (60% S&P 500, 40% Bar Cap Intermediate Treasury) — 8.53% • Benchmark (55% Russell 3000, 30% Bar Cap Agg Bond, 15% MSCI ACWI-ex US) — 7.24% 29 Observations on Investments • Risk-averse positioning of portfolio detracted from returns. • FEG-managed portfolio ($2.5 M) fell substantially short of benchmark. • In mid-2015, we redeemed $1.2 M from VAPIX Mutual Fund and gradually reinvested in three low-cost ETFs, reducing portfolio expense ration by about 45 BP (to 1.22%). • Both the FEG-managed portfolio ($2.5 M) and ETFs portfolio ($1.2 M) are now benchmarked against 55% Russell, 30% Bar Cap Agg and 15% MSCI ACWIUS • In Fall 2016, we will be reviewing FEG returns and possibly consider low-cost alternatives in capital preservation-focused asset classes. 30 Questions? 31 Cultural Committee Report 2015 Theodore H.M. To date, over 348 three-year, interest-free Study Loans have been made available to Dutch and American scholars to study in the other country. Numbers of requests outnumber available funds: $224,205 requested $132,500 in loans made (twelve students) $111,705 in study loans denied due to lack of funds.
