ADMINISTRATION
A message from the President
The Community College of Rhode Island Department
of Athletics, its student-athletes, coaches and support
staff represent some of the best of what the college has
to offer. Each and every season, CCRI student-athletes
put on the Knights uniform, step onto the court, field
or track and compete. They represent the college not
only through their performance, but also in spirit. Their
accomplishments, based on a commitment to academics
and athletics, make us proud.
During the 2013-14 academic year, many studentathletes represented CCRI with distinction at the national
level. Several teams were represented at regional,
district and national level competitions.
These experiences are more than just wins and losses in the record books. They
are examples of CCRI student-athletes achieving great things on and off the field. In
the classroom, they discover a new subject, a career field and a love of learning. In
athletics, they acquire the discipline and commitment it takes to reach their goals.
Under the guidance of knowledgeable and caring coaches, they learn the values of
camaraderie, commitment to a common goal and how to win or lose with grace.
If you are considering CCRI as a prospective student-athlete, I encourage you to
explore what we have to offer academically and athletically.
If you’re simply a fan of the college, I encourage you to attend one of our games
and root for the local team. Go Knights and Lady Knights!

President
Mission of the CCRI
Athletic Department
The Community College of Rhode Island
Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation, an integral part
of the curriculum, is dedicated to each
physical education student and studentathlete. CCRI provides a high quality,
nationally acclaimed and accredited
program that promotes academic and
athletic excellence. The college excels in
sportsmanship, team play and competitive spirit while providing a strong academic foundation and support program.
A message from the Director Of Athletics
Athletics is not about winning. Rather, it is about testing one’s character to the limits; to dig deep when
the chips are down and the time on the clock is running out. As Olympic wrestler Dan Gable once said,
“Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They’re made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy
called guts.”
The Community College of Rhode Island Department of Athletics provides countless opportunities
for student-athletes to better themselves and face challengeswith strength and resolve. While they are
not competing for a gold medal, the lessons they learn being part of a team and competing are a valuable
component of their CCRI experience. They are lessons that prepare them to succeed in the classroom,
a professional career and beyond.
CCRI athletic teams boast a tradition of excellence with more than 5,300 victories, 213 All-Americans
and 711 All-Region selections. During the 2013-14 academic year, several teams reached the playoffs
in their sport, representing the college at the regional, district and national levels. The foundation behind
those outstanding accomplishments is built on an academic support program and the dedication of CCRI coaches.
Whatever your athletic dreams might be, consider pursuing them at CCRI and join our tradition of success.

ABOUT CCRI
The Community College of Rhode Island opened
its doors in 1964 with 325 students in temporary space on Promenade Street in Providence
as Rhode Island Junior College. Today, with four
campuses throughout the state, CCRI enrolls an
average of almost 18,000 credit students each
semester, making it the largest comprehensive
community college in New England. Thirty-three
percent of its students identify themselves as
part of a minority group, many of whom are the
first in their families to attend college.

degree and certificate programs in the arts, business, computer studies, engineering, health sciences, human services, liberal arts and science departments taught
by faculty who are experts in their field. Each year, Rhode Islanders fill more than
30,000 seats in our professional development, skill enhancement, job retraining
and noncredit personal enrichment courses offered by CCRI’s Center for Workforce and Community Education.
CCRI students are active participants in campus life and in the community. The
college offers a varsity athletic program with 12 sports and a diverse selection of
student clubs and organizations, including student government. Annually, students,
faculty and staff volunteer for a variety of Rhode Island nonprofit organizations,
making life better for those less fortunate.
Since its inception, CCRI has graduated more than 64,000 students, with 95 percent
of them living and working in Rhode Island. The college is the No. 1 provider
of nurses and other health care workers in the state. Annually, more than 1,000
CCRI students
transfer to Rhode
Island College
and the University
of Rhode Island
to continue
their education.

survey given to
exiting students, when graduates were asked, “Would you recommend CCRI to
a friend or family member?” nearly 99 percent said yes. By preparing students for
continued education or to enter the state’s work force, the Community College
of Rhode Island provides its students with the opportunity to change their lives
and achieve their dreams.

ACADEMICS
CCRI’s Student-Athlete Academic
Support Program (SAASP)
WHERE DO THEY GO
FROM HERE?
The Student-Athlete Academic Support Program at the Community College of
Rhode Island provides a support system for academic success in college. This mandatory program prepares student-athletes for transfer to four-year institutions
where they can continue their education and athletic careers.
During the first semester of their freshman year, student-athletes are required to
complete academic placement tests in reading, writing and mathematics and enroll
in a one-credit CCRI student success course. The program requires student-athletes to attend two, one-hour study sessions each week during the semester, including the off-season, at the college’s academic success centers. The Department
of Athletics compliance officer schedules session times for each student-athlete
and monitors their progress every five weeks during the semester. The program
also provides daily academic advising, counseling and tutorials as well as transfer
counseling.
Prospective student-athletes are encouraged to visit staff, coaches and advisors at
CCRI’s Warwick and Lincoln campuses to learn more about the program and the
college’s varsity teams. Call the Department of Athletics at 401-825-2114 for an
appointment.

ATHLETICS AT CCRI
An overview of CCRI athletics
past and present
The Community College of Rhode Island is home to one of the Ocean State’s
finest and most successful intercollegiate athletic programs. Since its inception in
1965, the CCRI program has long been considered a front-runner in New England
community college and junior college athletic circles.
The basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, cross country, golf and soccer teams have
all been nationally ranked. The 2002 women’s soccer team captured the school’s
first national championship, while a number of other squads, including men’s basketball and women’s soccer, were national runners-up. With more than 5,300 victories,
213 All-Americans, 129 Region XXI championships and 711 All-Region selections,
CCRI leads the way among all New England community colleges.
Great coaching has been the key to CCRI’s success. From the athletic department’s
humble beginnings in 1965, the school has always featured legendary coaches. From
Hall of Fame athletic director and men’s basketball coach Vin Cullen to baseball
coaches Whitey Fell and Art Pontarelli, tennis coach Ray Carr and volleyball coach
Gail Davis, the tradition of great coaches and top-flight teaching has extended
through theyears and continues through the present day.
The college holds membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association
and is an associate member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

SEASON OUTLOOK
The 2014 Community College of Rhode
Island women’s soccer team has five returning student-athletes and 19 players total. The
program is in the process of rebuilding and
reloading. Lauren Cattani (Cranston, RI)
and Stepheny Perez (Providence, RI) will
serve as team captains.
There are a lot of new faces on the team.
This year’s squad will need to develop
cohesiveness, which will only come through
game experience. The coaches are confident
they have recruited talented student-athletes
who can compete at the regional, district and
national levels of play.
6
Head Coach Dennis Grassini and Associate
Head Coach Kathy Bannan believe in the
potential of the squad. “Being such a young
team, everyone will learn from every situation,” Grassini said, “The goals this season
include retaining the Region XXI title and
advancing to the district playoffs with the
hopes of to returning to the NJCAA National Championships for the first time since
2009.”
Both coaches believe that the team contains
strong leadership qualities from this year’s
captains. “The leadership, combined with a
wealth of talent from our new student-athletes, will be the foundation for our goals this
season to become a reality,” Grassini said.

Head Coach
Dennis Grassini ’73 begins his 15th year at the helm
of the CCRI women’s soccer program. Prior to
becoming head coach, he served as the top assistant
of the program since its inception in 1994.
Grassini, along with Associate Head Coach Kathy
Bannan ‘96, has guided the women’s soccer program
to an impressive 196-45-8 record in his years as
head coach. He led the program to back-to-back
national tournament finalist appearances in 2002
and 2003. In 2002, Grassini led the undefeated (220-0) Lady Knights to their first NJCAA National Championship, the first-ever
in the 44-year history of athletics at CCRI. In honor of the standout season,
Grassini was named NJCAA Coach of the National Tournament and National
Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA). He also was named NSCAA 2002 Northeast Region Coach of the
Year and Rhode Island Words Unlimited Women’s Sport Coach of the Year.
8
In 2003, the team finished as runners-up in the NJCAA national final game.
For his efforts, Grassini was named New England Region 21 Coach of the
Year and was named the Rhode Island Words Unlimited Women’s Sports
Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. He also was nominated
for National Coach of the Year by the NSCAA.
Grassini was instrumental in guiding the program to three consecutive New
England Regional Championships and three straight national NJCAA tournament appearances in 1996, 1997 and 1998. He has been involved in coaching
for more than 20 years and holds a national license from the United States
Soccer Federation and NSCAA state and regional goalkeeping diplomas. He
has served on various boards and committees throughout the Rhode Island
youth soccer ranks, and coaches and volunteers for the Rhode Island Women’s Soccer League. He also has been a member of the Region XXI coaches
committee, and currently serves on the NSCAA All-Northeast Region and
All-American committees.
A CCRI alumnus, Grassini graduated in
1973 with an associate degree in
business administration. He earned a
bachelor’s degree in business
administration from Providence
College in 1975. Grassini is now the
bursar at CCRI, a position he has held
since 1988. He was the recipient of
the 2006 Rhode Island Legislative
Award-CCRI Distinguished Alumni

Alumna Kathy Bannan
’96 begins her 15th
season as a member
of the women’s soccer
coaching staff. Head
Coach Dennis Grassini
’73 refers to Bannan as
his “right arm” for her
leadership of the team’s
successful seasons in
2002 and 2003, and for
the team’s successful 11-2-1 record in the 2008
season during his absence due to illness. For her
efforts, she was named the NSCAA (National
Soccer Coaches Association of America) Northeast Region Coach of the Year and she was also
the 2008 co-recipient of the Words Unlimited
Women’s Sport Coach of the Year Award.
During her playing career at CCRI and URI,
Bannan played the goalkeeper position and the
tireless work ethic of her collegiate playing days
has carried over into her coaching style. She has
been instrumental in elevating the play of the
CCRI goalkeepers, having coached five consecutive All-Americans from 2001 to 2005. Alongside
Grassini, she helps with all aspects of recruiting,
scheduling, and training.
A member of the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA), Bannan holds
both the NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeping
Diplomas.
As a goalkeeper at CCRI, Bannan earned All-Region XXI honors for two years and was selected
to the NSCAA’s All-Northeast Regional Team.
In 1996, she posted a 0.74 goals against average,
ranking No. 6 in the country among NJCAA
net-minders as she helped lead the Lady Knights
to their first national tournament appearance
where the team finished fifth in the country.
She holds the school records for most shutouts
in one season (14) in 1996 and most saves in a
career (236). She was inducted into the CCRI
Athletic Department Hall of Fame in 2005.
Bannan transferred from CCRI to URI where she
continued her soccer career in goal and graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
She is the secretary of the NJCAA Women’s
Soccer Coaches Association and volunteers for
the Rhode Island Special Olympics.

2013 SEASON SUMMARY
The Community College of Rhode Island women’s soccer team had another remarkable season, garnering an impressive 11-7-1 overall record and a 6-0 record
against Region XXI competition. The team’s season ended when the Lady Knights
lost to Monroe Community College in the district finals by a score of 2-1.
After starting the season 0-4, the Lady Knights really hit their stride, going 6-0-1
over their next seven games. Thanks in large part to that seven game run, the
Lady Knights cruised to a perfect conference record en route to a Region XXI
title.
To make it to the district final, the Lady Knights upset Monroe Community
College 1-0 on a goal by sophomore captain Paige Oram. Monroe had shut out
CCRI 3-0 earlier in the season.
Betti Worth (Manchester, England) was named a National Junior College
Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I First Team All-American.Worth battled
through injuries and established herself as one of the top midfielders in the
country. This was the first time since 2009 when Melody Lawrence and Stephanie
Morse were given the honor, that one of head coach Dennis Grassini’s players
was named an NJCAA First Teamer.
Alex Place (East Greenwich, RI) was outstanding in net all season, compiling an
11-5-1 record, while posting a 1.23 goals against average and a save percentage of
.833. Place was named a Second Team All-American following the season.
Oram, Place and Worth were named to the NJCAA Division I All-North
Team. CCRI also placed six players on the All-Region team: Place, Oram,Worth,
Estefany Mejia (Cranston, RI), Carla Porras (Narragansett, RI) and Taylor Lopes
(Cumberland, RI).

SEASON OUTLOOK
Returning coaches Gabe Toro, Kevin Berthiaume and Mike Jerue are preparing to take the
Community College of Rhode Island men’s
soccer team to the next level. The coaching
staff worked hard during the offseason to recruit players from across the Northeast who
have exhibited strong skills in the classroom
and on the field.
The coaching staff has prepared the players
for the season and believes this team has
the tools needed to put together a strong
campaign this year with players who bring key
attributes such as a high-speed, technical and
intelligent style of play.
14
This year, the team will work with two skilled
goalkeepers, Steven Zelepos (Stonington,
CT) and Alex Padilla (Cranston, RI). The
Knights have six players returning from last
year, which will give the team a solid core of
experience. The returning players are Sebastian McFarlane (Montego Bay, Jamaica),
Jean Arenas (Cranston, RI), Matt Bulmer
(Dayville, CT), Adam Coutu (Plainfield, CT),
Chris Quinn (Cranston, RI) and Junior
Robert (Providence, RI). New recruits include
local players Padilla, an All-State goalkeeper;
Trevor Lopes (Cumberland, RI), who earned
All-Division honors; Steven Londono
(North Providence, RI); First Team All-Stater
Evan Gaudreau (Jamestown, RI); and twins
Brandon Iannelli who earned All-Division
honors, and Casey Iannelli (both of North
Kingstown, RI). Other All-Division players also
on the 2014 Knights’ squad include Logan
Corcoran (Smithfield, RI) and Zach Bromage (Warwick, RI).

Head Coach
Gabriel Toro returns for his sixth year as head
coach of the CCRI men’s soccer program after
guiding the Knights to a 4-11 season in 2013. He
previously served as assistant coach of the program
for two years under Victor Gaspar. Toro, a native of
Colombia and a 1999 graduate of the University of
Rhode Island, is striving to renew the winning tradition of the CCRI men’s soccer program.
In addition to his coaching experience at CCRI,
Toro has organized and coached clinics in Rhode
Island and Massachusetts for boys and girls of all ages, focusing on technical
weaknesses and enhancing players’ strengths to improve their confidence and
technical skills. In 2001, he led the Tolman High School boys’ soccer team to
the state final where they finished in second place.
16
Toro has extensive professional playing experience with the semi-pro Lusitana Portuguese Club in Cumberland and the Providence Soccer League. After
graduating from URI
with a bachelor’s
degree in psychology, he played three
seasons for the
Rhode Island Stingrays. At URI, he was
a member of the
No. 3 ranked men’s
team that garnered
a record of 19-1-3
and won Atlantic-10
championship titles
in 1995 and 1996.
He was honored
with the Bob Butler
Sportsmanship
Award in 1998.
Gabriel Toro played
