AUTOMATIC SLABBING SAW
PETROPHYSICS
Versatile diamond impregnated radial blade utilized to slab core samples in two halves or to
trim full diameter rock samples. The automated machine is fitted with a variable rate feed
mechanism that enables the cutting of long section of very dense core in one pass without
fracturing, grooving or chipping and producing a high-finished surface. The core sample
remains fixed, while the carriage holding the diamond disc and motor unit moves along the core
sample at an adjustable and regulated speed. The moving of the saw blade along the core sample
starts when the cutting depth is reached. The saw arm oscillates around an axis so that a

CO2 SOLVENT CORE CLEANER (CSC 70)
PETROPHYSICS
The core Cleaner is a device for cleaning crude oil, drilling mud liquids, and water from a single
piece of whole core or from a batch of core plug samples. The principle consists of filling the
gas filled space in the core with solvent (e.g. toluene) by surrounding the core with a suitable
solvent containing dissolved CO2 gas and applying sufficient hydraulic pressure. The solvent
mixes with oil in the core and subsequent depressurizing to atmospheric pressure removes
residual oil from the core. A number of repeated cycles are required to clean the core of
hydrocarbons.
The apparatus fits into a standard size floor hood. The cleaning chamber is a pressure vessel
heated electrically with a two-kilowatt, 220-volt heater enclosed in an explosion proof housing.
The solvent is pumped from an onboard supply tank to the cleaning vessel with a high pressure
pump. A cyclone separator with a stainless steel-packed, water-cooled after-cooler is provided
to separate the CO2 and the used hot solvent when the vessel is drained. The used toluene drains
into an explosion proof electric still where it is recovered and delivered back to the clean
solvent supply. The still operation is automatic. The process controls are housed in a nonexplosion proof box intended to be mounted outside of the hood.

SOXHLET EXTRACTOR
PETROPHYSICS
The soxhlet distillation extraction method is used to dissolve and extract oil and brine from rock
core sample by using solvents. The cleanliness of the sample is determined from the color of the
solvent that siphons periodically from the extractor which must be clear. The samples are
placed in the extractor and cleaned by refluxing solvent. The solvent is heated and vaporized in
boiling flasks and cooled at the top by condenser. The cooled solvent liquid falls into the sample
chamber. The cleaned solvent fills the chamber and soaks the core sample. When the chamber is
full, the dirty solvent which was used to clean the core siphons back into the boiling flask and is
redistilled again The apparatus consists of a distillation/extraction glassware unit and a heating
mantle with thermostatic controller. The glassware is composed of boiling flask, soxhlet
extractor and condenser. A flexible plastic tubing is also used to connect the condenser to the
water cooling unit. All these devices are mounted on a mounting rack.

FLOW THROUGH CORE CLEANER
PETROPHYSICS
The apparatus is a rapid and efficient core cleaning system based on controlled sequential
solvent displacement under moderate pressure. Extraction of hydrocarbons and salts from
reservoir rocks is achieved by injecting one or more solvents into the core sample under

RECOVERY STILL FOR SOLVENT
PETROPHYSICS
The recovery still is designed to reclaim clean solvent from dirty solvent containing a mixture of
crude oil and solvent. The recovery process is based on fractional distillation by boiling point
temperature difference between the crude oil and the solvent. The apparatus is explosion proof
and should be installed away from any area of hazardous atmosphere. It consists mainly of (a)
an insulated boiler tank equipped with heaters located at the bottom and (b) a condenser using
house water. The recovered solvent is evacuated into a container whereas the dirty toluene is
transferred manually into the tank. The plastic bag located in the tank in which the dirty solvent
is poured permits to facilitate the evacuation of sludge deposit after the recovery process.

DEAN STARK EXTRACTOR
PETROPHYSICS
The dean stark extractor is used to determine fluid saturation of core samples. The sample is
first weighed and then introduced into the dean stark extractor. The water fraction is vaporized
by boiling solvent, condensed and then collected in a calibrated receiver. Vaporized solvent also
condenses, soaks the sample, and extracts the oil. The sample is then oven dried and weighed.
The oil content is determined by gravimetric difference while the water content is
volumetrically measured by the receiving tube. The apparatus consists of a
distillation/extraction glassware unit and a heating mantle with thermostatic controller. The
glassware is composed of boiling flask with extractor, a sample support screen, volumetrically
graduated water receiving tube, condenser and desiccant drying tube. A flexible plastic tubing is
also used to connect the condenser to the water cooling unit. All these devices are mounted on a
mounting rack

RETORT OVEN
PETROPHYSICS
The retort oven is designed to determine oil and water fluid saturation by a high temperature
retorting process in which the oil and water contained in a fresh sample of crushed core material
are vaporized, condensed and collected in calibrated glassware. The samples are progressively
heated to remove water and then heat up to 650°C (1,200°F) to remove oil from the sample. The
gas saturation is determined on an adjacent, litho logically similar sample by placing the core
sample in a mercury porosimeter and measuring the amount of mercury injected with the water
and/or oil in place. The system comprises a retort cabinet containing two chambers of five
sample bombs capable of holding crushed core material. Each bomb is equipped with a sealed
threaded cap and is connected to a long, stainless steel condensing tube. The tube passes
through a water bath thereby enhancing condensation of the evolved gases. Calibrated glass
receiving tube is affixed to each condensing tube with a rubber stopper to collect the water and
oil produced from the sample.

GAMMA RAY LOGGER (NGR 200)
PETROPHYSICS
The NGR200 core gamma ray logger provides both total and spectral analysis of the natural
gamma radiations emitted from the core samples upon arrival at the laboratory. It permits to
differentiate uranium, thorium and potassium concentrations. The data obtained with this
apparatus can be used to adjust the depth of the core to coincide with the open-hole logging
depths and to identify zones where core has been lost. The apparatus consists of a conveyer for
moving core, lead shielding to reduce background gamma radiation and a suitable gamma ray
detector. The detector system consists of a shielded scintillation crystal coupled with a photo
multiplier. Signals from the detector are processed using a multi channel spectrum analyzer and
analytical software. The gamma ray events are energy - sorted and counted over three energy
windows K, U and Th as well as the total gamma radiation. Core samples can be in barrel, in a
fibre glass, or aluminium, liner or exposed. The core is scanned along its length from bottom to
top simulating a wire-line log pass. The logging speed is adjustable to suit the core and data
requirements.

GEOMETRIC BULK VOLUME METER (GBV)
PETROPHYSICS
This instrument is designed to measure bulk volume of plug sized and/or full diameter core
samples with excellent accuracy. The principle consists of measuring accurately the length and
diameter of the samples at different grades. Minimum of 8 measurements along the diameter
and one every 50 mm along the length are necessary to get an accurate bulk volume
measurement. The bulk volume is determined by integrating those measurements. This
calculation can be done by hand or by optional computer program. In the latest, calipered
dimensional data on core samples are automatically logged and the geometric bulk volume,
shape factor, effective flow area and caliper bulk factor are automatically calculated by the
program.

EVALUATION SYSTEM (FDS 350)
The FDS350 system enables to perform (a) liquid permeability measurement, (b) static filtration
tests, (c) mud invasion evaluation and (d) stimulation tests on a formation sample at reservoir
conditions of temperature and pressure. This instrument can be configured for the evaluation of
the effect of different fluids on rock permeability such as drilling fluids (water-based or oilbased mud), cement effluents, chemical wash treating fluids and acid corrosive treating fluids.
Initial permeability, return permeability, brine sensitivity, critical flow velocity, acid

AUTOMATED HP-HT ACOUSTIC VELOCITY SYSTEM
(AVS 700-HT)
PETROPHYSICS
The AVS 700-HT apparatus allows for the measurement of acoustic velocity of a core sample
under various levels of pore pressure and radial/axial confining pressures at reservoir
temperature. The apparatus permits to propagate compressional and shear waves S1 and S2
through core samples, generate and measure the pore pressure and confining pressure, calculate
acoustic velocity at reservoir conditions and determine dynamic elastic constants (Poisson ratio
and Young modulus). The system consists of three automated pumps and a fully equipped
acoustic triaxial coreholder housed in a constant temperature air bath to restore the reservoir
conditions on the core sample. One pump cylinder is used to generate and control the pore
pressure while the other two pump cylinders are used to generate the axial and radial confining
pressures. A pulser-receiver is used to produce an electrical pulse to excite a piezoelectric
transducer and an oscilloscope measures the travel time of the pulse between the two
transducers. This data is then used to calculate the acoustic velocity of the core sample.

AGING CELL APPARATUS (ACA 700)
PETROPHYSICS
The apparatus is designed for aging core samples with crude oil so as to restore its reservoir
wettability before being used for a SCAL study. The base version is delivered with five core
units. The aging method entails first saturating a cleaned (and thus water wet) core plug with
brine. The brine is then displaced by crude oil until representative initial water saturation is
achieved. During this process the smaller pores remain water –filled, whereas the oil invades the
remainder of the pore space, leaving thin water films on the pore walls and in crevices. Finally,
the core containing crude oil and connate water is left for many weeks at reservoir temperature
and pressure. It is at this stage that wettability changes may occur in the oil-invaded pores.
However, these changes are dependant upon the stability of the water wet films, trapped
between the rock surface and the oil. The pore walls can only become oil-wet if contacted by oil
due to the rupture of these films. In this case the core will have achieved a mixed wettability
state status.

HASSLER COREHOLDER (HAS SERIES)
PETROPHYSICS
The HAC Series core holders are standard Hassler type core holders used for fluid flow testing.
With the coreholder assembled and the sleeve in place the core is inserted into the loading end.
The platen is then pushed in and held in place by the cap which can be screwed on by hand and
allows 50 mm adjustement. Further adjustment is possible with the use of interchangeable
spacers fitted to the loose platen. An inlet and outlet distribution plug allows fluids and gases to
be injected through the core sample. A unique feature of the HAC series core holder is that the
sleeve remains in place and the core is loaded from one end without having to drain or refill the
confining fluid. By releasing the confining radial pressure and unscrewing the end plug, the core
sample can be easily removed without exposing it to the annulus fluid. The core holders can be
provided to have interchangeable core diameters.

HYDROSTATIC COREHOLDER (HYC SERIES)
PETROPHYSICS
The HYC Series core holders are standard hydrostatic type core holders in which radial and
axial confining pressures are common. These core holders are routinely used for gas and liquid
permeability testing and water flooding experiments. The coreholder has a fixed platen at one
end over which the rubber sleeve is mounted and located in the other end of the sleeve is a
floating platen connected via a ¼” diameter tubing passing through the outside. For variable
length cores, this design insures solid contact between the platen and core sample. To change a
core sample the confining fluid must be drained off and the knurled screwed ring removed by
rotating anti clockwise by hand. This will withdraw the fixed platen together with the sleeve,
core and floating platen. After removal of the two platens from the sleeve the core can be
withdrawn. Loading a new core sample is carried out in the reverse order. The advantage of this
type of coreholder is that the overburden pressure acts on the end of the core as well as the
diameter. The coreholder can be equipped with a number of pressure taps molded in the sleeve
at discrete locations required by the end user. This design allow to monitor the pressure drop
along the length of the core sample during fluid flow tests. Electrical pressure tap can also be
provided to monitor the resistivity of the core sample during a permeability test.

TRIAXIAL COREHOLDER (TRC SERIES)
PETROPHYSICS
The TRC Series core holders are standard triaxial type core holders in which radial and axial
loading are independent. These core holders are routinely used for fluid flow experiments. A
unique feature of the TRC series core holder is that the sleeve remains in place and the core is
loaded from one end without having to drain or refill the confining fluid. Independent axial
pressure is applied via a floating distribution plug. An inlet and outlet distribution plug allows
fluids and gases to be injected through the core sample. A unique feature of the TRC Series core
holder is that the holder does not need to be completely disassembled to remove the core
sample. By releasing the confining radial and axial pressure and unscrewing the eng plug, the
core sample can be easily removed without exposing it to the annulus fluid. The coreholder can
be configured for hassler loading, hydrostatic loading or triaxial loading.

AMBIENT CONDITIONS TWO PHASE VIDEO SEPARATOR
(VSE -A)
PETROPHYSICS
The video separator is a precision device used for separating and determining the oil, brine or
gas volumes that are produced from a core sample during a two phase relative permeability test.
It consists of a separation bore used for collecting and separating produced fluids under gravity
and a measurement bore used for visualising the two phases fluid interface at room conditions.
The measurement bore consists of a glass tube to allow for sample visibility. Placing a light
behind the tube allows easy discernment of the two phases interface level. Measurement of
produced fluids during the displacement test is performed with a video camera which monitors
the position of the interface of the two fluids produced from the core sample in the measurement
bore of the separator. The position of the interface is directly proportional of the volumes of
fluids produced from the core sample and so of the change in the core saturation. The high
resolution camera is equipped with an integrated zoom and a back lighting installed in the rear
side of the tube. The camera is connected to the computer station so that the image of the fluid
can be displayed and recorded on the PC. The video software incorporates facilities which
enable to detect automatically the liquid/ liquid and gas/ liquid interface and so derive the
volumes of produced fluids from the core and so the changes in the core saturation.

BACK PRESSURE REGULATOR (BPR)
PETROPHYSICS
Vinci offers back pressure regulators designed to regulate the pressure in fluid flow studies. The
BPR consists of two chambers separated by a piston with a needle connected to it on the lower
side. The upper chamber receives the gas dome pressure and the lower chamber the process
pressure. The BPR acts a comparator. When the dome pressure is higher than the process
pressure the needle seals off the pressure and maintains the pressure. Inversely when the process
pressure exceeds the dome pressure the needle opens up and the excess process fluid flows out.
That way, on continuous flow these 2 stages are looped continuously and the process pressure is
balanced to the dome controlled constant value.

MIXER CYLINDER (MC SERIES)
PETROPHYSICS
The MC series are double end piston type cylinders designed to store and mix any kind of fluids
at pressure and temperature. The sample fluid is isolated from the secondary driving fluid with a
floating piston and a magnetic mixer is located in the mixing sample chamber for proper
agitation. The mixer is magnetically coupled to a drive system through the accumulator end cap
which incorporates a permanent magnet driven by a direct current motor with variable speed. A
mixer controller permits to stop, start and control the speed of the mixer. The cylinder can be
operated in either upright or inverted orientation. Both end caps are provided with an inlet/outlet
port for fluid introduction or fluid sampling.

HYDRAULIC INTENSIFIER (HI SERIES)
PETROPHYSICS
The HI series are dual cavity cylinders equipped with a low pressure (LP) bore at one end and a
high pressure (HP) bore at the other end. The pistons in each cylinder bore are connected by a
solid rod. When pressurized fluid enters the larger bore, the fluid in the smaller bore is
compressed to a pressure multiplied by the ratio of areas on the two pistons. Consequently,
pressures up to 150Kpsi can be achieved by using a commercially available lower pressure (10
Kpsi) pump. Material of construction is either stainless steel or titanium.
