Volume 23 | Number 9 OCTOBER 2010 News&Views Plosser: Economy Recovering SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY’S BUSINESS-TO-BUSINESS NEWSLETTER Serving Cumberland, Salem, Atlantic, Cape May and Gloucester Counties P Head of Philadelphiaʼs Federal Reserve Bank offers his own views, predictions on a “moderate” economic recovery. { DEBORAH A. EIN } Tri-Chamber Weight Loss Competition See page 3 for more photos namely housing and the construction industry, as well as businesses driven by these sectors. “I firmly believe our economic system is resilient and strong,” he said, “but the shocks are real.” He said some segments may “require restructuring.” The American public will need to adapt From left: David Kotok, Cumberland Advisors; Dawn Hunter, GVCC executive director; Charles Plosser; and Bob DeSanto, GVCC president. to changes in the economy, with the housing mix perhaps changing over time. Plosser cautioned against trying to alter the market. “When government is involved in subsidizing one behavior but not another, it distorts the market,” he said in response to a question about the American dream of home ownership and the public policy stance toward housing. “Let the markets work for us,” he urged. Instrumental in getting Plosser as a speaker at this opening event of the GVCC 2010-2011 season was Vineland’s own David R. Kotok, chairman and chief investment officer of Cumberland Advisors, an independent, fee-for-service money management firm headquartered locally and in Sarasota, Florida. The Chamber thanks the following sponsors: Comcast, South Jersey Healthcare, Sun Bank and Triantos & Delp, CPAs. WWW.VINELANDCHAMBER.ORG { C1 } In a weight-loss competition held earlier this year, individuals as well as teams shed pounds across the tri-county area. Mike Gates, pictured above, (LJ Zucca Team 2) was the biggest loser at 48 pounds lost. In addition to winning a $125 prize, Gates helped his team to a third-place team finish. Gates, along with teammates Bob Elia, Lucille Martorana, Elli Sayell, and John Tarnecki lost a total of 95 pounds lost (8.2 %), garnering them a $100 team prize. Travis Harris, from The Roarke Agency, was a close second to Gates, losing 41 pounds, which also gained him a $125 prize. He, too, helped his team to a winning finish—second place. He and his teammates—Frank Harris, Sr., Frank Harris, Jr., Lauren Harris, Susan Harris—of The Roarke Agency/Team Harris, lost 143 total pounds (8.7 %), winning them a $200 team prize. But the first-place team prize went to Knock Down Those Pounds for losing a total of 90 total pounds (10. 4 percent). The first-place team prize, donated by Allen Associates of Vineland, was $500 for the team, with each team member winning $100. They are Sandy Bispo, Amy Burgess, Denise Deckard, Tanja Nocco, and Phil VanEmbden. resident and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, Dr. Charles Plosser, addressed an overflow crowd at last Wednesday’s GVCC monthly luncheon. From the podium at Merighi’s Savoy Inn, Plosser offered some perspectives and his own views on the nation’s economy. He noted that the country is “in the midst of a moderate economic recovery,” despite the fact that we have just experienced the “summer doldrums.” “Such a slowdown is not unusual in the early stages of recovery,” Plosser said. He predicted the recovery would continue “at a moderate pace for the next several quarters” as we “gradually return to a world of better job markets.” Plosser cautioned, however, that with a 9.6 percent unemployment rate nationally—and a 13 percent jobless rate locally— that it will “take time for the labor market to heal.” Before they start hiring, businesses must be comfortable that the recession is behind us, he said. Tied to the jobs factor is the housing sector, a “skill mismatch,” and “limited geographical mobility.” He noted that many job-seekers may be prevented from moving to an area where they have found work, because they will lose a substantial amount selling their house in the present real estate market. Home sales, Plosser noted, are one of the three temporary factors hindering the road to recovery, especially over the summer. The other two: U.S. Census workers were let go as they finished up in summer and the sovereign debt in Europe. Despite the recovery, which Plosser said has been occurring for about a year, he predicted that some sectors of the economy will be smaller in the new economy, Who _\cg)XZ_`\m\ =@E8E:@8C <OG<IK@J< @E PFLI :FIE<I% K_\j\ [Xpj# _\cg ]ifd X fe\$fe$fe\ i\cXk`fej_`g n`k_ Xe X[mfZXk\ n_f befnj pfl Xe[ befnj n_\i\ pfl nXek kf ^f `j dfi\ `dgfikXek k_Xe \m\i% 8 D\ii`cc CpeZ_ =`eXeZ`Xc 8[m`jfi# efn n`k_ XZZ\jj kf k_\ i\jfliZ\j f] 9Xeb f] 8d\i`ZX# ZXe _\cg pfl gcXe# `dX^`e\# [`m\ij`]p# i\YXcXeZ\ Xe[ Y\c`\m\% A\]]i\p >\fi^\# :@D8 =`eXeZ`Xc 8[m`jfi -'0 +/+$.((0 D\ii`cc CpeZ_ *('' ?`e^jkfe 8m\el\ <^^ ?XiYfi# EA '/)*+ Investing involves risk. FINANCIAL SERVICES LLC Service for your Business I certainly hope you were able to join us for the first general membership meeting of the season! We were honored to have both David Kotok of Cumberland Advisors and Dr. Charles Plosser of the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank as our guest speakers. I felt their remarks were both informative and insightful. I will be providing a link to Dr. Plosser’s speech in an upcoming email. We have many interesting topics lined up for the coming months so try to set aside some time on every third Thursday and join us. At our next general membership meeting, October 21, the topic will be “How to Protect your Business from Internet Fraud/Personal Identity Protection” with guest speakers from the FBI and Heartland Payment Systems. This Friday evening, October 8, the Chamber is proud to be sponsoring the Vineland Firefighters Recognition Dinner. This annual event honors our community firefighters and emergency personnel. These citizens are our city’s true heroes, as they are dedicated to keeping us all safe.
