The Catering & Events Industry
Industry Outlook
At $49 billion, the catering and event industry continues to thrive.
$49 Billion

81%

& significantly higher
profits in 2016
In a June 2015 report, *IBISWorld stated, “The Catering industry will serve up
a new round of growth over the next five years. Corporate demand for catered
events is forecast [to] strengthen as the business climate improves and employers
begin hiring again. Caterers will also benefit from more robust private demand
as rising consumer sentiment and higher disposable incomes will encourage
consumers to splurge on weddings, parties, and other catered events.”
Multiple Purchases
The industry has enormous buying power. Of the readers of Catersource
magazine and catersource.com who responded to our annual third quarter
readership survey, over 87% said that they either influence or make purchasing
decisions for their companies. Coupled with the knowledge that caterers and
event planners buy in volume because they serve volume guests, and you can be
assured your media buy will yield a return on your investment.
Here’s some really good news
Approximately 98% of our reader respondents said they expect their businesses
in 2016 will remain stable, and of those, over 81% said they will see positive
growth as well as significantly higher profits in 2016 in the form of more event
services, drop off catering, venue contracts, weddings, and outdoor events such
as BBQs and picnics.
And where do they find their new suppliers and resources? Guess what—
it’s Catersource.
“
C atersource helped my business grow by offering the
professional networking that as caterers we don’t always
have time for or ‘trust’ the locals to discuss. Some of the
recipes, especially appetizers, have become my top sellers!
Always being able to turn to Catersource for
up and coming trends gives me an edge for attracting
new clients for my business.
Also, being a Chef Instructor, I use the website and
magazine as an addition to material for my lecture
and lab classes! Thank you!”

Our Audience
Market Segments
With market segments that include members of national and international
associations such as NACE, ICA, ACF, ISES, plus colleges, universities,
restaurants, convention centers, banquet facilities, arenas, casinos, event
venues, healthcare, and more—your product will reach a targeted audience
passionately engaged in hospitality services. Better yet, of our survey
respondents, over 67% said they have been in business over 10 years. Almost
87% reported they have been in business over 4 years.
86%
of readers share our
magazine with at least
one colleague
In addition, our readers buy in volume because they serve and entertain volume
guests. Here are some powerful numbers: Over half of our readers facilitate
250 or more events per year; some more than 500 a year! The average guest
count? Between 100 and 200 people.
27%
of readers share
with three or more
colleagues, increasing
your reach to more than
Let’s crunch those numbers:
One company x 250 scheduled events x 200 guests = 50,000 people
That is, one company alone out of the many who read Catersource may need to
purchase 50,000 of each item they will require for their scheduled events.
For fun, we asked our readers to tell us about the largest guest count they
had at a single event as of July 2015. From a 2,500 guest outdoor cookout for a
corporate client; to a commencement day buffet incorporating four lines running
double sided for three hours for 2,400 people; to a Dell computer product launch
celebration for 4,000; to a boxed lunch event for 1,250—we
heard about wedding receptions and fundraisers; we heard
about an event for a thousand-plus hungry bikers all dressed in
pink for a Harley Davidson breast cancer ride; we heard about
company picnics, college president inaugurations, crab feeds,
BBQs, and gallery openings (to name a few).
