Outline of Master's Program
Architecture and Civil Engineering
The ideal living environment in the 21st century is explored by taking architecture, city or region, and whole national land into account, using the
approaches of natural and human sciences, technology, and fine arts. Structural Engineering undertakes the research to enhance the methods of
structural design and performance evaluation as well as the understanding of the behavior of structure and components such as reinforced concrete construction, steel construction and space frames. The Urban and Architectural Design's education and study are carried out on psychological and physiological comfort, physical phenomena related to sound, light, heat, and air, and behaviors of people in living environment as well as
on history of architecture, design theory, and lifestyle of people as a whole.
Materials Science and Engineering
Our department is committed to educating students to become independent professional engineers and researchers who conduct innovative
research and develop high quality functional materials, thus contributing to an environmentally sound and sustainable society. Through formal
course work and mentoring, each student is expected to acquire comprehensive and systematic knowledge of the synthesis, structure, properties

materials science research in the department. Our aim is to educate and nurture students to be qualified scientists and engineers whose scientific
knowledge, competitive spirit and high ethical standards enable them to become leaders in their field.
Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology
“Chemistry” is a discipline that seeks to reveal the nature of substances and the changes that occur within such substances on the molecular level.
“Biotechnology” is not merely concerned with the revelation of biological phenomena but makes it possible to utilize and modify such phenomena.
The philosophy of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology is to develop an interdisciplinary approach to the education and the
research based on the fundamentals of both “chemistry” and “biotechnology”. It is also to endeavor to create new technology that will form an
industrial foundation that will enable us to foster a wholesome natural perspective and philosophy and to develop a healthy sustainable society.
Applied Physics
Almost all modern scientific technologies, such as computers, cellular phones, CDs, DVDs, high-tech medical technologies and space development

through cooperation with other departments.
System Design Engineering
As human society becomes more global and complex, the strong support of sciences and technology is needed to solve the problems that accompany such a society. At the same time, the technology we will see the future will be is required to enhance the comfort of the human environment. The Systems Design Engineering Course is concerned with designing, constructing, and managing
the balanced, harmonious human-machine relationships that create a global environment.
This course includes four divisions. Each division is devoted to study of its specialized field, but the computer is used as a common
tool to visualize new ideas and to automatize the design processes of observation, analysis, designing, development, testing, and
evaluation. Therefore, the research on the common basic theory and technology in "designing" is carried out under the cooperation
of all the divisions.

Outline of FIR FU
"Far-infrared," on which FIR FU is developing its research activities, is the
wavelength region with wavelengths longer than those in the infrared region
among electromagnetic (EM) waves with very wide wavelength regions. This
region locates between radiofrequency (RF) waves and light and also corresponds to submillimeter waves, the wavelength of which is shorter than 1 mm.
This region is also called as the terahertz region according to their frequencies. Terahertz waves are EM waves with frequencies higher than gigahertz
waves that are used in communication such as cellular phones. EM waves in
the region of far-infrared / terahertz waves have features both straight going
as light and penetrating as RF waves. This wavelength region is a treasure
house of technologies needed in the 21st century.
This wavelength region has been called as an unexplored region for a long
time owing to lack of powerful sources. Oppositely, this means that this wavelength region will make a rapid progress from now on. FIR FU is carrying out
novel research and development of new technologies applying with world
class "Gyrotrons," which have been originally developed in FIR FU. Moreover,
we have just started research on terahertz science with combination of a novel
method of terahertz wave generation and a new spectroscopic technique.
Now, FIR FU is a leading base of the research of the far-infrared / terahertz
waves in Japan.
FIR FU has world wide research activities under collaboration with domestic
and overseas institutions. This center is supposed to perform its part as a
world class base of the research of the far-infrared / terahertz waves.

For establishment of a research base
FIR FU aims for a world-class base on development of high power terahertz
technologies. For this purpose, FIR FU has strengthened a global network
under an international consortium "Promotion of Research on Development
and Application of Submillimeter Wave Gyrotrons" and coordinates with
domestic organizations. Moreover, FIR FU drives forward collaborative
researches in the far-infrared / terahertz wave region by supplying high performance gyrotrons developed in FIR FU.
For international collaborations, we have concluded agreements for academic
exchange or memorandums for collaboration with following institutions in the

In April 2009, the University of Fukui Information
Processing Center was reorganized for its new mission.
While continuing to fulfill its existing role as a common
information facility for use on campus, the Center will
pursue a greater range of duties as the University of
Fukui's basic rules for managing information systems
(hereafter referred to as "the Information Security Policy")
begin to take effect. As the main point through which
the University implements its electronic information policy, the Center will also handle management and operation duties of greater range and responsibility than
before.
The newly established University of Fukui Center for
Information Initiative has the following aims:
(1)To help advance and optimize information processing in the University, and to render it more efficient,
the Center will provide and maintain an information
processing system service, which will support the
work of the University in education, research, medical care, scholarly and scientific information services, and other fields.
(2)The Center will contribute to greater efficiency in,
and optimization of, research, education, and other
activities of the University by developing the
University's information network infrastructure and
by working to plan and implement an information
infrastructure that supports stable and uninterrupted
service.
(3)The Center will manage and implement the
Information Security Policy. While continuing to provide users of the University's information systems
with a safe and secure service, it will also work to
guarantee the information security of the University,
which as an institution of higher learning has to
maintain a relation of trust with citizens, companies,
educational institutions, and other partners.
