Club members are welcome to attend and observe, please contact the President for details if you wish to attend. Committee meetings are official club events but do not attract attendance points Please keep your email and postal address current with the membership secretary. If there is any change please promptly email [email protected] CLUB PERMIT SCHEME Greetings from the Club Permit Officer! With the new log book system there are special rules and regulations that need to be followed as per the Vicroads/AOMC guidelines as well as our club requirements. ALL applications need to be approved by the Club Permit Officer to make sure the appropriate criteria is met, so if or when VicRoads come to audit, we can provide all the relevant information. A lot of clubs, and people, have worked long and hard to get this new system inforce and we don't want to be the club putting it in jeopardy. If you plan to attend a general meeting to present an application, please make sure you call me and I will make sure I am there. It's not a difficult to get club plates, but the process is in place to make sure we do the right thing by the scheme and our club., Andrew Gottschalk 0418 577 147 4 Presidents Report And so – by the time you read this the end of the financial year will be upon us. We will be just about at our AGM and winter will have truly set in (think it has already - 13* top in Melbourne today??? Try 5* at my place!! Brrrr!) The EOFY doesn’t bother me too much (except for all those stupid ads – I mean – what are advertising people ON ????) and the weather is what it is – I can’t change it! But the MOA AGM??? Now THAT’S a biggie in my calendar! I am hoping as many of you as possible can come along to join us and have your say! I’m also hoping that some of you might have been giving serious thought to joining us on the committee to continue making the MOA one of the best clubs around??? On a positive note – earlier in the year we received an invitation from the Mini Moke Club which encompasses England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Europe, to their th 30 birthday celebrations back in April. On behalf of the club I sent a birthday card. They were rapt! We even got a write up in their April edition. So – I am looking forward to seeing you all at the AGM and the Annual Presentation Dinner – should be a hoot! See later in “Tracks” for more info. Have a happy and safe moking month and I’ll see YOU out there sometime !! It has not been all that much different from Treasurer roles that I have held at other clubs, however that was a long time ago. In those days it was weekly visits to the bank and endless cheques. Nowadays it is all electronic with direct debit and online payments. I have only written 3 cheques for the year and made about 4 deposits. Brad has been great as he has deposited the membership receipts directly which has really helped. So easy. What has also surprised me is how few transactions this club has; only 60 payments and 100 receipts for the entire year. With the simple recording system base entirely on the principles of cash accounting you just cannot go wrong. What I have really enjoyed is working the funds we get each year (and the ones we have earned over the years) to ensure they work hard for us. In particular I am happy that the Electro Moke funds, which have sat around for years doing nothing, are now in a term deposit. They have only earned about $50 for the year but that is at least something. I will report on the exact details of how we have performed over the year and the breakdown of funds at the upcoming Annual General Meeting but as at half way through the month we have an operating balance of $2,733.68. Remember, if you cannot make the AGM, make sure to get your Proxy Form in to vote for the Constitution changes. See you there Peter 6 Editors Report As reported in April TRACKS this is my last edition of TRACKS (at least for now) and I wish the new editor (hopefully one comes forward at the AGM) all the best and I’m sure they will bring their own personality to future editions of TRACKS. I haven’t been in the editor’s chair long enough to do a retrospective other than to say that I have learnt a few lessons along the way. Firstly, be careful what you write – it could be wrong (remember the magnet on the sump – embarrassing; make sure you get your sub editor to check the proof. Notably a couple of editions ago I accidently left in a previous article! – Oops.) You may recall I included a quick survey in the recent membership renewal forms. Thank you for those that took the trouble to fill them in. Results are below. 1. We are thinking of including a regular member profile page (in colour). If we do, would you be prepared to fill out a profile questionnaire and supply a photo of you and your Moke. Yes (86%) / No (14%) 2. Technical articles. Are there… Too Many (0%) / About Right (73%) / Not enough (27%) 3. Overall, are there… Too Many Photos (0%) / About Right (67%) / Too few (33%) 4. Would you like to see the centre pages set up around upcoming trips so that you can pull it out. Yes (60%) / No (40%) (sample =30) Great feedback on the member profile page. We are currently negotiating with a potential advertiser for a colour ad which will give us an additional colour page for your profile. Those that said yes and also left their name will be contacted first for their write up if this comes off (and the new editor agrees!). I am pleased that technical articles appear to be hitting the mark. Without going overboard, photos are always a good inclusion but as you would appreciate I am very reliant on members sending them in. Using the middle pages for trips is a bit closer. When we get a few more trips up (i.e. when the weather gets warmer) we might try the experiment. Finally, there were also some nice comments made regarding the magazine -, thank you. Makes me a bit sad to take a break – but I need it! – pity I can’t do the same at work!! Latest Shannon’s sale. A bit more realistic than the previous sale. Keep your Moke it may eventually make more for you than putting money in the bank! 7 8 SATURDAY THE 27TH OF JULY 2013 7-11pm THE PLACE TO BE!!! A FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN NIGHT WITH THE MOA! SEE YOU THERE FROM 7PM (parking at the rear) 9 Trip Reports Dandenong Ranges drive & BBQ 19TH May Seven Mokes and a Mini (Susan & Clive Allan) left the Stamford Hotel in Rowville on a cold sunny morning for a drive to Emerald market, Sivan Dam and the Dandenongs Drizzling rain began on our way to Emerald via Wellington Rd to Boundary Rd Harkaway where Bob & Allison Higgins met the convoy in their OV. We stopped at the elephant rock (painted white this time) at Upper Beaconsfield on our way to Emerald. Thankfully the weather changed at Emerald allowing the market and Puffing Billy to be explored in comfort. The convoy took over the car park behind the coffee shop at the far end of town where members where offered 10% group discount. Parking is difficult on market day. New members Matt & Fiona Reynolds & family joined us at the coffee shop. The wood worker at the market saw our convoy and has decided to craft a moke replica. We headed off to Silvan Dam via Monbulk for a sausage sizzle lunch and drizzling rain again. The rain stopped at the dam and for the rest of the day fortunately, Sunny at last. The covered rotunda was taken over by us mokees and the birdlife kept us company. Everyone enjoyed feeding kookas, crimson parrots and magpies. After a hot lunch, coffee, sweets and Moorish delicacies provided by Susan Allan and much chat many decided to head home rather than continue on to William Ricketts sanctuary. The aboriginal sculptures are placed along very steep paths which may have been slippery. Mount Dandenong Observatory was offered as an alternative but at a cost per vehicle. The weather being so changeable this was a “no go” also. Three Mokes and one OV continued along the dirt road from the picnic ground on Olinda-Creek Road to Mount Dandenong Arboretum and National Park. Ken Daff in “Kermit” followed me in “Bluey” back to Narre Warren North Road as this was the first long run with a new engine. 10 Thanks to the 21 members who made the effort to phone and attend, Bob & Ken who cooked lunch and Susan for her generosity in providing homemade chocolate balls & lemon slice (both very yummy) and tray of sweets for our coffee. (organised by Glenn Gold ) Aussie Classic Car Show- Sunday 1st of September I am hoping you can all join in on this day (even though it is Fathers’ day). This is a great show of Australian cars and what could be more Australian than our Mokes??? We will be alongside the P76 club (and they have a BIG presence!) and the Mini club. There will be a trophy for the best Moke in show as there is for most other “breeds”. So clean it up and pack it up and head on up to the Aussie Classic Car Show. (Rhonda) 12 Out and about with Pictures by Clare Pocock & Taryn Ruig It has been quite a busy few weeks with some travel and motorsport thrown in for good measure! A few weeks ago Zac and I travelled to Avalon to the Geelong Motorsport Complex for a “come and try” motorkhana day with the Mini club. Oh what fun!! Licences could be purchased for the day and a very reasonable price for those who did not have one and instructions were issued and poles were put up (actually – they were put up the day before – some people are very very helpful!) We even had a couple of young guys from CAMS there for the day (yes- they had to BUY their cams licenses!) who had never competed in motorsport before and they were put into a rather quick topless Moke (obviously not mine ) for the day. Needless to say – their goggles kept their eyes clear of dust – but not the rest of their faces!!! Oh! And the hair!!!! What a sight! Zac has done a few motorkhanas before – but this was a brush up on skills before the big Queens Birthday weekend trip to the HAY MINI NATIONALS! We left home straight after his exam around lunchtime on the Friday. The Moke was packed, oil, water and tyres checked, fuel topped up and off we went. With stops at Kilmore, Moama and Deniliquin we finally got into Hay at about 8.30 in time for the Friday night get together! A mad hat party at the pub!!! It was a long trip for Cabsav, Zac and I. Google maps has it at about 438k from home and just over 5 hours! Ha!!! It took us 7½ hours from home – though I suppose lunch at Kilmore, petrol and loo at Moama and dinner at Deniliquin can eat into the time!!! Those last 120k from Denny to Hay across the Hay plains, an area commonly known as “The Long Paddock”, in the dark, in the cold, can be quite demoralising! I just wanted to get there! And though Zac has his learners – at this stage he only had about 12 hours in his book and I think it was just a tad too soon to put the “L”s on the Moke! Brian and Ben arrived about 2 hours later (long story – but HE’S the one who had car issues in the Landrover!) Saturday was the big street parade where we were joined by the Vanguard/Triumph club and also the B&S Ball Utes! This was followed by the Show’n’Shine, rocker cover races, scrutineering for the khana, car boot sales, welcome by the mayor of Hay, presentations, local groups market stalls and more til about 4pm. A heap of fun, chatter, banter and loads of sunshine! Yep – the weather ALL weekend was fantastic – chilly of course – especially in the morning and evening, but clear blue skies and sunshine during the days! What a treat! Pic of me, Zac, TJ & Eilish Watson at the street parade in Hay Saturday night was the Trivia night at the RSL where it was announced that there were 103 entries into the motorkhana! OMG! That’s big! But with 6 “tests” that meant 16-18 competitors in each lane – don’t forget some cars had more than one driver – some up to 4! 13 My night did not end there – at about 1am Zac decided that the pain he had in his lower side back was getting worse – and in concern that it might be his kidneys – I took him to the local Hay Hospital – we were in, triaged, bp’d, urine tested, seen by doc, given pain killers, and out - all within 30 minutes! What brilliant service! It was a pulled muscle in his back!! The day of the Hay Mini Nationals Motorkhana dawned bright and clear. We headed out to the front paddock of some locals who have kindly allowed the event to be held there for many many years! If ever you go into Hay – go thru town, past the pool, take a right towards Sydney and in about 10 minutes you will see this -> on your right. What a sight!! The whole town supports this event and it is on their calendar and advertised far and wide! Drivers and officials briefing done and we were khanaring it with the best! Zac and I were lucky to be in a group with Craig, TJ & Eilish Watson as well as a bunch from South Australia. Oh what a fun day we had – Craig and I were in hot competition mode (yeah! Right!) against each other all day, but the most fun was watching the kids have a go! It was Eilish’s first motorkhana as she is now 12 (cams licenses are available from 12 ->) and TJ and Zac have done a couple each before. Lordy Lordy how we laughed!!! Brian and Ben were in another group as they were driving other friends’ minis. They also had a great time and were smiling every time I look over at them (through the dust!! Haha!) In the end we finished like this – and with a lot of dust on us!!! nd th rd st rd rd Eilish 99th, Tj 92 , Ben 84 , Zac 83 , Craig 81 , Rhonda 73 and Brian 33 Just for the record – this event is full of Mokes!!! There would have been 12-15 Mokes there at least! In the top 15 places there were 12 mokes! The top 6 were mokes and just quietly – there are more and more mokes ending up there cos people are starting to realise just how damned good they are!!!! So if you think this sounds like fun (and it is!!!) and if you think you might like to get involved (mad if you don’t!) then let me know – come and have a look next year and join in on the fun. Not everyone who goes to Hay competes – alot come for the laughs and camaraderie. And just to see so many Mokes and Minis in one spot year after year is brilliant! We drove home on the Monday after another great fancy dress party Sunday night. The Victorians came as Mexicans (as you do!!!) and awards were allocated! Zac managed to drive from Booroorban into Deniliquin- about 80k along the Hay Plains on his “L”s. He had to dodge cattle, birds of prey, VERY large trucks going the other way (and we all know how that feels!) and he was lucky that he only took over after a flock of emus tried to play chicken with me! Not many kids 14 can boast an hours’ learner driving in the middle of nowhere especially when they still aren’t even up to 15 hours!!! Hopefully by next year he’ll be able to do the maximum allowed to take the pressure off me!! Well done Zac! Committee Please have a think about joining the committee of the MOA. YES – we need YOU to lend a hand. NO – it doesn’t take too much time. YES – you will actually get alot out of it NO – the club will not survive without people to run it YES – you can nominate yourself NO – don‘t be shy – please call me or any of the committee if you would like to join us! Rhonda MokeFest 2013, WA Adventure MokeFest 2013, Western Australia Adventure September 21-29th – MokeFest 2013, WA Adventure This year MokeFest is going on the road to Western Australia in the last weeks of September with an expected contingent of 20 or more Mokes travelling over from the eastern states to visit the locals in Perth and have a look around. It is planned a week to get over to Western Australia, a weekend of rest and socialising in a rural town and then five or so days to explore on your own before the final weekend in Perth. More information can be found at www.mokesinc.org.au At the time of writing there are 7 Mokes heading over from Melbourne or Victoria, a similar number from NSW mostly around Sydney or the south coast, Rod and Faye from Tassie and hopefully a couple more, and four or five Mokes from South Australia. I am estimating there will be around 30 odd Mokes to meet us in Perth when we get there so expecting number around 50 or so at least. Coming home there are various options on offer with some people heading back in a convoy of Mokes to get home in the week, others are taking the more scenic route down around the coast south of Perth and even doing the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. I am also organising options for vehicles to be trucked back or people may like to experience the rail option of the Indian Pacific. MokeFest 2013 is about having an experience in your Moke that you would not otherwise have the chance to do and to experience the friendship and sense of achievement these kind of trips bring out. If you are interested in coming along or would just like to find out more then check out the website or email me at [email protected] or 0409 942 896 Terry 911L 15 Jill & Allen out and about When we got to Tenterfield we caught up with local Moke owners Nanette & Ron Watts. Unfortunately it was cold, dark and rainy so we didn't get to see their Mokes but we did get a picture of the letterbox next day. The next stop was Casino to catch up with club members, Peter & Lyn Glover. Peter organised for our two Mokes to be part of the Beef Week parade which also included another local Moke owned by Brenda who uses it each year to promote Beef Week. Nanettes letterbox Peter, Lyn & Allen ready for the parade - this is NOT the new look for the guys - they wanted everyone dressed as hippies. General Meeting Report: June 5th 2013 25 present and 5 apologies. Main aspects of the meeting included: • Welcoming Christian who was visiting with a Mokee friend. • Noting that since last meeting Brad Wooding, Membership Secretary, went to hospital at short notice for a quadruple bypass and reporting that the operation has been successful and he will soon be home for an extended rest period. • Emphasising that all members need to consider nominating for committee positions with President, Tracks Editor and Trip Co-ordinator currently requiring nominations. This matter is urgent. Any number of members may nominate. The club will only remain healthy if led by a complete committee, rather than one overworked by members having to take on multiple responsibilities. • A treasurer's report noting: 16 • As expected there was a real turn around in net revenue this month with memberships flowing in. We received just short of $1,800 all from memberships. • Tracks was unusually high but was expected. It costs a lot to make changes to a constitution. There is extra printing and postage. Tracks was $520 in May compared to the normal $300. • Current operating account balance is $2322.14 • Reporting of a sale through the eBay account of one port decanter to Finland. • Notification through the AOMC that many clubs have had problems with VicRoads over annual renewal of club plate registered vehicles. Members are advised to be very careful about checking the documentation and following through on detail. • Peter reporting on the Proxy vote system for the AGM, described elsewhere in Tracks, which we must use to satisfy legal requirements. Members were given the opportunity to raise questions and concerns about the constitution motion that will be presented at the AGM. No discussion was requested and committee hopes that is because everyone realises that we simply must pass this motion and adopt the new version of the constitution as a result of changes to the law. • Scott telling us of his 'barn find' Moke Ute in Marlborough Queensland which he will soon have stored in Victoria ready for a long term project to bring it back to the road. The meeting closed with a raffle of a huge packet of gigantic hand wipes, a bottle of wine with plastic glasses (x2) and small gas camp cooker. The post meeting fun was Dinky Moke practice races on the club track. Can you help? Please reply directly to Phil if you can. From: PHIL Gallacher [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, June 17, 2013 2:29 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Model Moke Hi, I am a previous MOA Member and obviously Moke owner from the late 80's. Due to a new house etc the Moke had to go. However I now have a three year old grandson who has seen my pics and become Moke mad. I am trying to buy him a small scale toy moke and wonder if you can help please? With thanks, regards, Phil Gallacher. It’s amazing to see what our Mokes get turned into. This one is currently on sale at Gumtree Only $1800 in Tassie if you’re interested 17 Congratulations to the English Mini Moke club reaching 30. The printed card is from us and made it into their attached editorial (written by Roy Scott.) 18 19 Where will you be on 3rd July? Over the last 6 months we have been talking about the necessary changes to the MOA Constitution. It has been force on us and we must change it. You have had a copy for 3 months. It has been completely written along the guidelines provided to us by the Department of Justice. But to make the changes we need people to vote. If we do not get enough eligible votes then we cannot pass the changes. And the only way you can vote is to be there or to vote via a Proxy. rd So where are you going to be on 3 July? We would love to see you at the Annual General Meeting. But if you cannot make it then fill in the Proxy Form we sent you in last month’s Tracks and send it off by post or scan it and email it to us. You can give it to someone to hand in beforehand as well. If you don’t have the form then email me on [email protected] and I will send you one. In the end what we ask is that you do something. Please be there or get your Proxy vote in. Peter Shackleton Changes to constitution – minor updates (2nd run, nothing has changed fom last month.) Dr Alex Moulton 1920-2012 Jeremy Satherley remembers the man behind rubber suspension, Hydrolastic and Hydragas suspension as hold up our Mokes. One of the great figures of the British motor industry, inventor and suspension engineer Dr Alex Moulton, CBE, RDI, FREng, died on 9 December, 2012. Dr Moulton is best remembered in automotive circles for the Hydrolastic suspension system he designed for the Morris 1100, a system which was then used across the entire ADO16 range of MG, Austin, Wolseley, Riley and Vanden Plas. But this was only a culmination of the thinking he had practiced for years with ingenious alternatives for two and fourwheeled suspensions. After gaining an engineering degree in Mechanical Sciences at Cambridge, Alex Moulton spent the war years apprenticed on engine design to the Bristol Aeroplane Company. Post-war he joined the family firm of George Spencer Moulton & Co, which over the years had gained a worldwide reputation from its shock absorbers for railway rolling stock, rubber flooring and hoses. But from 1945 Alex’s self-appointed mission was to diversify into rubber automotive suspensions, at a time when many cars still relied on cart springs all round. Early promise His first opportunity came in the early 1950s when he worked with Nuffield’s Jack Daniels on an exploratory rubberin-torsion ‘Flexitor’ system for the Morris 21 Minor. Moulton’s work impressed the Minor’s designer, Alec Issigonis, and when unfortunately the project was scrapped and Issigonis left BMC to design the Alvis TA350, he sought Moulton’s input on that car’s suspension system. The seeds of a significant working relationship had been sown. For Alvis the TA350 was thoroughly unconventional, with a 3½-litre V8 engine driving through a two-speed gearbox with overdrive mounted over the rear axle. Moulton’s suspension layout featured water-filled rubber cones connected by pipelines fore and aft – essentially a forerunner Hydrolastic, which despite the prototype’s other teething troubles had the car cornering on rails with a luxury-car ride. Hydrolastic to Hydragas Once again the project was scrapped on cost grounds, but better times lay ahead. With the family business sold to Avon Rubber Company in 1956, Alex set up his own company at his imposing Jacobean Bradford-on-Avon home to concentrate on personal projects. Meanwhile Issigonis had rejoined BMC where, in response to the fuel-starving Suez Crisis, Leonard Lord had briefed him to design a small saloon to counter the rash of bubble cars cashing in on the situation. Lord agreed to Moulton handling the suspension, although the Mini’s set-up had to be confined to rubber cones initially because of the tight development schedule. But a less compromised 22 brief for the Morris 1100 of 1962 allowed Moulton carte blanche for a fullyinterconnected Hydrolastic system, which relied on displacers at each corner pushing a sealed anti-freeze compound between front and rear wheels. Road-testers found the new car’s handling and ride a revelation. From 1964 to 1971 Minis also went Hydrolastic, although it proved more time-consuming and costly to fit to the smaller car. Other successful users of the system however were the Austin 1800/2200, Austin 3-litre and pre-1979 Maxi. The Allegro’s 1973 debut began BL’s switch to Moulton’s Hydragas, a refinement of the Hydrolastic system with nitrogen gas chambers pressurizing the pipelines’ diaphragm fluid compartments. Over the years it was fitted to other cars in the group, most notably the Metro, and of course it was the suspension system for all MGFs from 1995, until diminishing economies of scale forced a switch to more conventional coil springs for the TF in 2002. Pedal power Car suspensions aside, Alex’s other big success was the Moulton bicycle, featuring small wheels for reduced rolling resistance and a rubber-suspended frame. Raleigh rejected the concept as unsalable, so Moulton launched the bike himself in 1962. Like the Mini, it rapidly acquired a Swinging Sixties cult following, forcing Raleigh to eat their words and acquire the manufacturing rights in 1967. Now honoured by a Queen’s Award to Industry, Moulton later bought back the rights and continued production through specialist manufacturers. In November 2012 he celebrated the bike’s 50th anniversary at his home, attended by fellow inventor Sir James Dyson, who praised Alex for ‘setting such a good example’ to his engineers. `Moulton never married, maintaining that his passion for engineering would have conflicted with family life. Considered eccentric by some, there was never anything wayward in Moulton’s unswervingly studied and disciplined approach to a project. Nothing was left to chance. ‘Test, test, test,’ he would always say. ‘Spin has no place in engineering. The iron test is how it performs.’ (currently on ebay) 23 Happy July Birthdays All the members of the Moke Club would like to wish the following people a special birthday celebration 0002L DOUG WILLIAMS 1214 LYNETTE BEKTASH GEOFFRE SHARMAN 0686 CRAIG ILLING 1219 0723 ALLAN JACKA 1234 JOHN 0963 FIONA ADAMS 1238 THIERRY SADLER 1036 BARRY HOCKING 1245 ROBIN GIBSON 1046 BRYAN POPE 1256 WENDY FOARD 1052 LUKE PATERSON 1257 MEREDITHBIRD 1067 SCOTT MARKBY 1262 1100 FRANK BARDEN 1265 JASON REVELL 1108 DIANNE McADAM 1271 IAN THOMAS 1111 PETER GLOVER 1277 ROBERT OSBORNE 1153 FAYE OWERS 1278 PETER REILLY 1154 JAMES DURANCE 1287 BONDOUX 1155 LILLIAN HATFIELD 1292 1165 DAVID SALAU 1294 1194 JILL WHATMORE 1295 CARRIE STEPHEN EDDY JESSY 1197 LAURIE PATERSON 1202 PATRICK FINN 1214 ROGER BEKTASH 1303 1305 1308 McLEAN PAULINE ROBINSON CROSS EASTWOOD EKBERG VIVIENNE HEMPHILL MARK CLOUAY HELEN BENDIX CELEBRATION TIME! weddings, namings, ceremonies Rhonda L Flynn Civil Marriage Celebrant Bayswater Nth Vic 3153 03 9725 8479 Mobile 0419 580 924 [email protected] Graduate Diploma of Arts (civil ceremonies) 24 CLUB PRODUCTS They’re back – Yellow, Red and Blue $8 or 3 for $20.
