Black day for
Rynpark’s Financial Manager
When the tornado hit Jackie
Smit’s family home on Tuesday
26 July, she was working late,
her daughter was in Clarence
and her two sons getting their
business done – so no one was at
home. This, Jackie describes as a
blessing and how God’s hand was
clearly protecting them all.
It was such a traumatic experience for the family, but also an amazing
one. Help came from all avenues – Rynpark colleagues- committees, and
residents ; nearby neighbours; the Biker’s club, and the Indian community.
A large collection of warm clothes and blankets, groceries, school bags and
every kind of stationery was delivered to all the families affected – many of
them school children who had lost most of their possession in the tornado,
and the wind and hail that followed.
Jackie housed and fed many families in the part of her house that
miraculously had survived the storm. She tells of the contractors and other
helpers who arrived the next day to put together a temporary roof and chop
up and clear the living areas of the large tree that was flung on the house.
We are thankful that you are safe Jackie!
– ‘n vreemde verskynsel in Suid Afrika.

Xmas in July @ RP5
On Sunday 31 July residents had the opportunity to celebrate Christmas
with a very special luncheon offered at Rynpark 5.
What excitement there was – long rows of residents waited for the doors
to open at 12.00, and they were not disappointed. A welcoming glass of
sherry (perfect for the cold weather) and beautifully laid tables with all the
trimmings, were ready for them.
And the food! Well, everybody agreed that it was tasty, plenty and served
with style. The dining room was a buzz of conversation, with laughter and
expressions of enjoyment.
Thank you Angela and her team. We were spoilt, and this special
occasion was enjoyed and appreciated…..and fun!
Kersfees in Julie?
Manie Alberts – World Champion
Manie has been blind from the age of 2, but this has not hindered him from
exceeding both academically and in sport.
He obtained a scholarship to study Physiotherapy in London and while
there, was offered a post as lecturer in anatomy. He chose however, to
return to his beloved South Africa.
He started playing bowls at the age of 29 and displayed such brilliance
that he was chosen to play against Australia in a test 6 months later.
He never looked back, and over the years that followed won 6 gold
medals and a silver in World Tournaments, as well as 16 gold medals in
South African Championships. He also won the South African Masters
Bowls Championships 4 times.
In 2011 he was given the State President’s Award to honour his illustrious
bowls career.
He was also a keen long distance runner and made history as the first
blind runner to run the Comrades - thus opening the way for future blind
athletes. This earned him a place in Comrades history.
Manie has inspired many people with the courage he has shown in
overcoming the challenge of blindness and is indeed a true champion! ■

Marie (87) woon reeds 22 jaar in
Rynpark 6 en het onlangs hul 65ste
huweliks herdenking gevier. Wat ‘n
ongelooflike voorreg om so lank vir
NS. Ons het met groot hartseer
verneem dat tannie Marie op 15 Aug
oorlede is. Sterkte oom Piet!

Onthou jy nog deur At Mostert RP5
– Toe bakkies net ‘n bakkie was.
– Petrolpompe by die motorhawes.

Years they had shared all kinds of
activities and adventures. Lately,
their activities had been limited to
meeting a few times a week to play
cards.
One day they were playing cards
when one looked at the other and
said, “Now don’t get mad at me. I
know we’ve been friends for long
time ~ ~ but I just can’t think of your
name! I’ve thought and thought, but
I can’t remember it. Please tell me
what your name is.”
Her friend glared at her. For at
least three minutes she just stared
and glared at her. Finally she said,
“How soon do you need to know?

Please would you print a special
request to management that the
telephone lists provide first names!
We live in a wonderful park where we
often meet fellow residents, and only
get to know their first names – well, to
be honest, we cannot remember more

Why the formal Mr, Mrs, or Ms?
Please change this. It has been a
problem and request for many years –
let’s make 2016 a year of adjusting and
correcting this.

Hoe wonderlik
groot is Jesus se genade! AMEN.
Your garden
in August
Bonsai cultivation and care requires
techniques and tools that are
specialized to support the growth
and long-term maintenance of trees
in small containers. At the August
meeting, Hennie Steenberg of
Rynpark 5, who has been growing
and looking after bonsai plants for
many years, showed us how to repot,
wire and trim a rather neglected
specimen. Thank you Hennie for
sharing your knowledge with us.
At our next meeting Sandra will be advising us as to what needs to be done
to get our gardens into tip top condition for the Open Garden Day on 15th
October. If you have any special questions you might want answered, please
contact Sandra on x 7391 so she can ensure she has all the answers for you.
TIPS FOR THIS MONTH
– Why not add a few veggies such as chillies, carrots, lettuce, spinach or
tomatoes in your flower garden and while you are at it, add some silver,
grey or greyish-green herbs as well to give added contrast and colour. They
also help to repel pests.
– Plant lots of daisy bushes, coleus, daylilies and roses for summer-long
colour.
– Train your lawn to be water efficient by watering it well only once a week
– this will encourage deeper root growth. Don’t let the garden service cut
your grass too short as it keepsthe roots near the surface where they will
be more likely to dry out.
– Rapid growing standards and
hedges will need a light pruning.
