Venezuela’s Juan Carlos Maurin,
Emanuel Andrade, and Victoria Karam
were the winning team on behalf
of Danny and Ron’s Rescue at the
sixth annual Great Charity Challenge,
presented by Fidelity Investments®
(GCC), on Saturday evening at the Palm
Beach International Equestrian Center
(PBIEC) in Wellington, FL.
A signature event of the 12-week
Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), this
year’s GCC will distribute approximately
$1.5 million to 34 lucky Palm Beach
County charities that were chosen
at random to be represented in the
pro-am team relay competition. Each
team was made up of junior and
amateur riders competing side by side
with top professionals.
The winning team of Maurin,
Andrade, and Karam, sponsored by
Hollow Creek Farm and corporate
sponsor Gold Coast Feed and Supply,
earned the top prize of $150,000 for
Danny and Ron’s Rescue with the
fastest combined time of the night in
88.43 seconds. The animal rescue was
one of two wild card charities that were
selected at random the night of the
event.
Coming in second place was the
team for Propel, sponsored by Back
Country Farm as well as corporate
sponsor Visse Wedell. The team of
Sydney Shulman, Cloe Hymowitz, and
Alexa Effron completed the course with
a combined time of 88.55 seconds to
earn $125,000 for their charity.
Kid’s Cancer Foundation finished
third and won $112,500. The team
was made up of Darragh Kenny,
Allison Epstein, and Andre Mershad,
sponsored by Mershad Stables and
corporate sponsors La Victoria Farm.
They finished on 94.44 seconds.
The GCC features a sliding scale for
the balance of the proceeds down to
$15,000 for 34th place, ensuring that
everyone is a winner.
For the winning team, 18-year-old
Emanuel Andrade has competed in the
GCC for four years and was also on
the winning team during the second
annual event in 2011. He was thrilled
to get another victory and support the
winning charity.
“I think every event that I can do to
help someone else is very important for
me and for my life,” Andrade stated. “I

Week five of the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival, sponsored by Ariat®
International, concluded on Sunday with a win for Brianne Goutal (USA)
and Ballade van het Indihof in the $127,000 Ariat® Grand Prix CSI 3*. After
topping Friday’s $34,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round 5, Goutal
and the 14-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare (Thunder van de Zuuthoeve x
Heartbreaker) continued their winning form into the week’s finale event, held on
the beautiful grass jumping field at The Stadium.
Olympic course designer Robert Ellis of Great Britain set the international
courses at PBIEC for week five and concluded with a great track for 45 competitors
on the field on Sunday. Seven entries were clear over the first round course to
advance to the jump-off, and two went double clear in the tiebreaker.
Goutal and Ballade van het Indihof, owned by Remarkable Farms LP, were
the fastest double clear in 47.10 seconds. Heather Caristo-Williams (USA) and
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Caristo’s Evening Star finished second in 50.78 seconds.
Harrie Smolders (NED) and Copernicus Stables LLC’s Don VHP Z had the
fastest round of the jump-off in 46.77 seconds, but a rail at the final fence put
the pair in third place.
“I am thrilled,” Goutal said of her victory. “This week she has been amazing,
but in general she pretty much only jumps good rounds. I was very disappointed
not to have her for the last two years due to a couple of injuries and now that
she is back, it is really just a pleasure every time you go in the ring. She is very
strong, but she takes you right down to the big jumps. She is ultra careful, so
you are never worried. She is just something else. She is a freak of nature, and
I am grateful every time I go in the ring with that horse.”
Goutal had to catch the clear round of Heather Caristo-Williams and Evening
Star, but knew her horse could beat their time.
“Honestly, my horse is so fast,” Goutal said. “She wastes no time across
the ground. She jumps very high, but somehow it is efficient at the same time.
You never feel like you have really opened up. I just keep a high rhythm, a high
canter and kind of let her go. She is so careful that you can kind of guide her

In 2003, Sheila C. Johnson,
Salamander’s Founder & CEO, walked
onto 340 picturesque acres in Middleburg,
the heart of Virginia’s horse and wine
country, and promptly fell in love. She
immediately envisioned creating an iconic
retreat – one where guests would enjoy
life-changing experiences complemented
with exceptional service.
In 2013, after a decade of unfailing
persistence, that vision was realized with
the opening of the equestrian-inspired
Salamander Resort & Spa. Located in
foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and
only one hour from Washington, D.C., it
has already been acclaimed as one of the
finest new resorts in the world and lauded
by numerous media outlets.
Designed to blend into the surrounding
rolling countryside and respect the
traditions of Johnson’s own nearby Virginia
farm, which served as the architectural
inspiration, the resort features 168
luxurious, spacious rooms and suites,
an exquisite 23,000-square-foot spa
with one-of-a-kind features like outdoor
treatment terraces and a spa courtyard,
Virginia Piedmont-inspired cuisine, a
media-ready Cooking Studio and a twoacre Culinary Garden.
But, it’s the 25-acre, full-service
equestrian center which truly sets the
resort apart from its competition. It
features a 22-stall stable, riding arena, nine
paddocks and a vast array of programming
that utilizes the miles of on-property trails.
The Middleburg resort is just part of
Johnson’s growing Salamander portfolio.
The company recently announced plans
to open a new luxury beachfront resort
on the Florida Panhandle in Destin. The
Henderson, a Salamander Beach & Spa
Resort, will feature 171 rooms, a destination
spa, and an array of function and meeting
space. It is scheduled to open in late spring
2016. Salamander is also involved with the
development and management of Tryon
Resort in Tryon, N.C., which features the
already operational and successful Tryon
International Equestrian Center.
In addition, Salamander operates three
existing golf and family resorts across the
state of Florida.
Located on 900 rolling acres in Tampa
Bay, Innisbrook Resort hosts the annual
PGA TOUR Valspar Championship on its
famed Copperhead Course. The resort
also features three other championship
layouts, over 550 suite accommodations,
a tennis center, a luxury spa, six swimming
pool complexes, four restaurants, a nature
preserve, and three conference halls with
65,000 square feet of meeting space.
Reunion Resort in Orlando offers
over 300 premier multi-bedroom villas
and luxury private homes. It is the only
location in the United States with golf
courses designed by the golf greats Jack
Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson,
and also features the exclusive ANNIKA
Academy by Annika Sörenstam. It also
features elegantly appointed meeting
space, a full-service boutique spa, multiple
restaurants and waterpark with 1,000-foot
lazy river.
Situated along Florida’s Palm Coast,
the beachfront Hammock Beach Resort
features over 300 accommodations,
including a 12-story tower of luxury
suites. It is famed for its two spectacular
golf courses: the Ocean Course by Jack
Nicklaus and the Conservatory Course
by Tom Watson. The resort also features
a multi-level water pavilion, indoor atrium
pool, beautiful spa, numerous restaurants,
and oceanfront meeting and function
space.

Hunters Prepare at WEF 5 for WCHR Week 6
Despite a rain day on Thursday,
Lynn Rogers, from Long Island, NY,
and her own horse, Blue Point, were
in winning form. Rogers and Blue
Point stayed consistent throughout
the day and finished first, second, and
third over fences. With only one day
of competition, Rogers ended up as
the champion of the Camping World
Adult Amateur Hunter 50 and Over
Section A.
Deborah Perkins and her own
horse, Kaepernick, topped two of the
over fences classes to finish as reserve
champions of the Camping World Adult
Amateur Hunter 50 and Over Section A.
With the rain yesterday, Blue Point
and Rogers prepared for today’s classes
with a trail ride. Rogers commented, “He
[Blue Point] didn’t even lunge today.
He’s easy to prep and very quiet.”
After two days of competition,
Stephanie Danhakl, from Philadelphia,
PA, piloted her own horse, Enough Said,
to the Shamrock Ventures AmateurOwner Hunter 18-35 3’3” championship.
The pair won all four jumping classes
with scores of 85 and higher both
days. “One of the best things about him
[Enough Said] is his consistency. Every
round I go in, I know he is going to be
the same,” Danhakl commented about
her horse’s performance.

Reserve Champion honors in the
division went to Elizabeth Kirby riding
Darkest Hour, owned by The Party Girl
Group. Darkest Hour was second and
fourth over fences along with a second
place finish in the under saddle.
On the final day of WEF 5 competition
Tori Colvin and Inclusive were named
champions of the Antares Large Junior
Hunter 16-17. Inclusive, owned by Dr.
Betsee Parker, won three of the four over
fences classes, along with a third place
finish in the handy hunter round. Colvin
exclaimed, “Today he went amazing! He
went very slow and nice.”
Further Lane Farm’s horse, Stellar,
was ridden to reserve championship
honors by Sophie Michaels. The pair
was first and second over fences and
won the under saddle.
Despite having a long break, Colvin
and Inclusive have been working
together for the past five years. Although
he was a little out of practice the first
day, the second day Inclusive was
back to his winning ways. “I know him
[Inclusive] very well. He is my best friend,
he can have his days, but he steps it up
in the ring,” Colvin said.

WEEK 6
The 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival
(WEF) kicked off its fifth week of
competition at the Palm Beach
International Equestrian Center (PBIEC)
on Wednesday with a win for Ireland’s
Ronan McGuigan and Capall Zidane
in the $34,000 1.45m FEI speed class.
McGuigan topped his trainer and fellow
Irishman, Conor Swail, who finished
second aboard Ariana. Meagan Nusz
(USA) and Vesuvius finished third.
The course designer in the International
Arena for week five was Robert Ellis of
Great Britain. Ellis began the week with
57 to show in Wednesday’s 1.45m speed
competition with 19 clear rounds.
Lillie Keenan (USA) and Chansonette
Farm LLC’s Balance were first to go and
set the pace at 65.71 seconds to hold
the lead through 25 rounds, but were
eventually pushed to fifth place. Meagan
Nusz and Amalaya Investment’s Vesuvius
upped the pace in 63.79 seconds and
ended in third. Ronan McGuigan and
Capall Zidane soon came along to take the
lead in 63.54 seconds. Andrew Ramsay
(USA) and Shalanno Farms LLC’s Welfare
jumped into fourth with their time of 64.64
seconds. In the end, Conor Swail and
Susan Grange’s Ariana were just of the
mark in 63.67 seconds to finish in second.
Also showing on Wednesday, the
$6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m speed class
was held in a California Split with wins for
Laura Chapot (USA) with Mary Chapot’s
Zealous as well as Ramiro Quintana (ARG)
with St. Bride’s Farm’s Bialda. The $6,000
Spy Coast Farm 1.40m jump-off class
concluded the day with a win for Conor
Swail (IRL) and Blue Hill Farm LLC’s Tahiti
Island.
The 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival
(WEF) resumed with competition on
Friday after inclement weather forced the
cancellation of Thursday’s classes. The
$34,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge
Cup Round 5, originally scheduled for
Thursday, was held in the afternoon with a
win for USA’s Brianne Goutal and Ballade
van het Indihof. Alexander Zetterman
(SWE) and Flecu finished second and
Abigail McArdle (USA) and Cade placed
third.
Robert Ellis set the speed track for
Friday’s Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge
Cup Round 5 with 77 rounds and 17
clear combinations. With her win aboard
Remarkable Farms LP’s Ballade van
het Indihof, Brianne Goutal broke Eric
Lamaze’s four-week hold on the series.
The defending winner had one rail down
to finish out of the money.
Although other riders were faster,
Goutal’s early clear round, fifth in the order
February 11 - 15, 2015
of go, would prove unbeatable. Lamaze
went right before her, fourth in the order,
and it was no mistake that Goutal crossed
the timers just fractions off of his time. She
watched his every step before entering
the ring, and followed the same track.
Her resulting time of 59.90 seconds held
on through over 70 rounds for the win.
Sweden’s Alexander Zetterman and Flecu
finished second, almost three seconds
slower in 62.54 seconds.
Also competing on Friday, the $6,000
Spy Coast Farm 1.40m Speed Challenge
was held with two sections of competition.
Adam Prudent and Patrick Flin and Plain
Bay Sales’ Vasco won Section A in the
International Arena. Laura Chapot and
The Edge’s Out of Ireland won Section B
in the Mogavero Ring.
Saturday afternoon featured the
$34,000 Suncast® 1.50m Championship
Jumper Classic with a win for Ireland’s
Darragh Kenny and Spruce Meadows’
Quiz in a challenging jump-off against the
clock. Course designer Robert Ellis (GBR)
saw 66 horses jump his first round course
with 20 advancing to the jump-off, where
six were able to complete the second track
without fault.
Eugenio Garza and El Milago’s
Balloon jumped the first double clear in
43.93 seconds, immediately followed by
Meagan Nusz and Amalaya Investments’
SRI Aladdin in 42.53 seconds. The two
finished fifth and third respectively
Laura Kraut and Mike Collins’ Ferox
B soon jumped into the lead in 41.97
seconds, but eventually settled for second
place when Kenny and Quiz took the top
spot in 41.64 seconds
Quentin Judge and Double H Farm’s
HH Donnatella finished fourth in 43.82
seconds. Nicolas Pizarro and Colasko,
owned by Monica Burillo Eguia Lis and
Pizarro, capped off the top six with a clear
round in 49.71 seconds.

feel very lucky that I can do this to help
someone else. I am happy that we won
something that helped. It is something
nice to do, and it feels so good.”
Victoria Karam (16) shared Andrade’s
sentiments, adding that the riders had
great team camaraderie heading into the
ring. “We train together a lot and have a
great bond between us,” Karam said.
“We are all from Venezuela, so we can
work together and I’m proud of what
we have done.”
Juan Carlos Maurin was competing in
the event for the first time and enjoyed
his first experience in the competition,
noting, “I have jumped these type of
classes before, but not in the U.S. It
was a fantastic experience. Helping the
charities is what makes you be better
and feel better about yourself. Helping
this charity is something amazing for me
and for them.”
The GCC event has raised more than
$6.4 million for over 100 Palm Beach
County charities in the last five years.
For Danny & Ron’s Rescue, the chance
to add $150,000 to their support of needy
animals this year is a dream come true.
“We are quite overwhelmed. We never
dreamed of getting picked as a wild card
with as many charities that were in it this
year,” Ron Danta stated. “We were thrilled
to hear our name called. Then to be able
to get such an great team was amazing.
We were thrilled to see who we were
paired with. We knew they were going
to be fast because we have seen them
show before, but when they came in the
ring, they were in it to win.”
Danny & Ron’s Rescue is a 501(C)
(3) non-profit, no-kill rescue dedicated
to saving and helping dogs in need.
Partners Danny Robertshaw and Ron
Danta have been saving and rescuing
dogs for years and officially founded their
rescue in 2005 after learning about the
animals left homeless after Hurricane
Katrina. Donations pay for food, medical
care, spay, neuter, supplies, and housing
for these adorable dogs. It will also
assist those who cannot afford medical
help for their own pets. Many dogs are
considered unadoptable due to age or
chronic medical problems. They rely
on the support of generous donors to
defray the cost of their medical expenses.
If you can’t adopt a dog, Danny & Ron’s
asks you to consider sponsoring a dog
in need.
ESP CEO Mark Bellissimo spoke about
the evening as well, acknowledging the
great feeling it gives to see the GGC’s
benefit to the community. “It is amazing
when people start talking about where
they are going to put the money,”
Bellissimo stated. “Everyone has a plan
for what they received. To see people that
are grassroots making a difference and
spending so much time and effort in the
community with the help of this event is
spectacular.”
Page 12
WEEK 6
February 11 - 15, 2015
“Thank you to the Andrades and
Hollow Creek Farm,” Bellissimo continued.
“They have not only committed their major
sponsorship for WEF, but to step up and
support a team like this is amazing, and
to win is inspiring for everyone.”
“We would like to recognize the
amazing top professionals that competed
here tonight, including Ian Millar, Laura
Kraut, Brianne Goutal, Darragh Kenny
and Kent Farrington,” Bellissimo added.
“For riders like that to use their horses
and compete in this event means a lot,
and it shows the caliber of their character
to support the GCC.”
In addition to the issued prize money
for the winning teams, nine grants were
awarded throughout the evening. The
following charities received additional
grants:

American-Bred: Corcovado BG
A five year-old gelding named
Corcovado BG is scheduled to arrive
at the Winter Equestrian Festival next
month and make his Wellington debut.
The horse isn’t coming the usual route
from Europe, however, but by way of
American Breeder and Grand Prix rider
Denise Wilson. Corcovado has never set
foot on European soil as he was bred
in the U.S. by Wilson’s own Blue Gate
Farm in Dousman, Wisconsin.

We caught up with Wilson to get the
scoop on her exciting young prospect:
er
WW: How did the breeding program
at Blue Gate get its start?
DW: I bought a weanling from
Europe and it sparked a fascination with
bloodlines, breeding and raising homebred horses. It’s a small operation that
I like to do for fun and if I get a few
nice ones out of it it’s a nice bonus.

Wilson started riding American
Saddlebreds at age six before switching
to hunter/jumpers and developing a
knack for breeding successful sport
horses. Her eye for talent and interest
in bloodlines has her especially excited
about the future for Corcovado, who
is out of Tecmessa by Chapultepec
(Chin Chin x Namelus R x Polydox).
My first foals are now seven and I
have three mares all due this year
with five young ones coming along.
worth it. Knowing Corcovado BG like that,
I am confident that he is going to have a
super sport career.
WW: What is Corcovado BG’s
history?
DW: I rode both of his parents in
the Junior Amateur Jumpers and they
seemed to be a perfect match. I really
think he got the best from the mare and
the stallion. He’s ¼ Thoroughbred and
has three really prominent Warmblood
lines on his sire’s side.
WW: Why have you invested time in
developing American-bred horses?
DW: I had some really good mares that
I competed up to the Grand Prix level
and when they were done in the sport,
I thought I had an advantage breeding
them because I knew them inside out. I
was confident I could find stallions with
strengths to match their weaknesses. I try
to bring a little science into it and spend
months researching different stallions.
Some of my young home-breds have all
the qualities I would look for in Europe.
WW: What is he like to ride?
DW: He’s athletic, careful and has a
super mind for sport. The Thoroughbred
line gave him a lot of blood, but he is extra
careful and brave – I see a lot of both his
parents in him.
WW: What does your training
program look like for the young
home-breds?
DW: My schedule is so demanding and
I think it is important for young horses to
have structure, so I send them to Taylor
Flury to start them. [Flury rides out of her
family’s AliBoo Farm in Minooka, Illinois].
When I know they are started correctly
they are able to come back and show
successfully or go on to be sold. It’s a
gamble, but watching them grow up is
Brianne Goutal and Ballade van het Indihof
and snake through a little bit. Heather
had a beautiful ride, but I think her horse
is a bigger mover, more bounding, and
I think my horse is just really, really fast.”
Caristo-Williams explained that
her horse had some time off last year
and is just coming back to this level of
competition, and she was thrilled with
his performance.
“I was really happy with my jump-off
in general,” she stated. “It has been a
little while since I have been able to be
in a jump-off with these guys, so I just
wanted to do what was right for my horse.
There was that pillar placed before the
combination. I went inside that in the
class on Friday and we had a little trouble
and had the last jump down in the WEF
(Challenge Cup), so I knew that I was
not going to make that mistake twice. I
wanted to do what was best for my horse
and I know it was a slower option, but
at that point going against everyone else
here, I was just really happy to be efficient
and go for a clear round.”
“It is so much fun out there,” CaristoWilliams added. “I love the jump-offs and I
am just so happy to be able to go in there.
I gave him the summer off because our
end of the season last year we kind of
went a little bit downhill, which is odd for
him because he really is a trier. Now we
are just kind of getting back into it again
and peaked today, so that was nice.”

Harrie Smolders had the time in hand
with Don VHP Z, but took extra risk in
his jump-off course with the knowledge
that Goutal and Georgina Bloomberg
were still to follow. The risk did not pay
off when he had the final fence down, but
Smolders was happy with his horse. He
began riding Don VHP Z last year and has
already developed a great partnership.
Commenting on his round, Smolders
noted, “My horse I think is naturally a
slower mover than Brianne and Georgina’s
horses, so that is why I had to take a bit
more risk to put on the pressure. I think
we were a bit unlucky today because I
think Don is in really good shape and he
deserved to go clean.”
“I think I am starting to know him
better and our results are getting there
now,” Smolders stated. “He is a great
horse. He is really scopey. Now I am
looking forward to the future with him.”
The last time Smolders competed in
Wellington was in 2012, and he has seen
great growth in the level of competition
in the last few years.
“I think the competition is very strong
here,” the rider acknowledged. “There
are many good horses here. It is good
sport. It is not easy. It is not easy to win
anywhere, but it is definitely difficult here.
There are many good riders and many
good horses.”

Faces of WEF: Samantha Wight
Samantha Wight grew up 45
minutes from the entrance to Palm
Beach International Equestrian Center,
but didn’t know such a place existed
until many years later. Not born into
the horse world, Wight got her first
ride when she was five on a blind white
Thoroughbred at summer camp. Today
she is ribboning at the best horse shows
in the country under the direction of
Monty and Sandy Kelly, Amy Momrow
and Shaine Brooks. A rider, full-time
student and self-proclaimed Netflix
addict, here’s a closer look at 17-year
old hunter rider Samantha Wight.
What are some of your career
highlights as a rider?
I was champion and owner/rider
champion in the Small Junior Hunters
last week and it was my birthday! I was
champion at Capital Challenge, Reserve
Champion at Washington International
Horse Show and blue ribboned at
every indoor show this fall. I was losing
confidence last year and then I was
Champion against some of the best
hunters in the country and I realized I
really can do this. When I started I didn’t
know anything. I showed up to my first
lesson in Kerrits pants without a belt
and a t-shirt. I had no idea what I was
doing – I thought “flower boxes” was
a class, but it all changed from there.
Describe your ideal horse?
I think I found my ideal horse with
my hunter Chromeo and my equitation
horse Leon. I treat them like teammates
and not equipment, so they try to go the
extra mile for me. I like a quieter ride
so I feel like I can move up and there’s
no better feeling than riding those two
horses.
How do you balance being a fulltime high school student and
riding?
I am a junior at Saint Andrews in
Boca Raton full time and they are
really awesome with my riding. They
understand that we are nationally ranked
athletes and really put forth the effort to
make it easy to balance school, riding,
taking care of yourself and having a
social life. I try to get all my work done
on Thursdays because I come to the
show every Friday and then I also am
in private tutoring. My plan is to apply
early decision to Duke or Vanderbilt for
Psychology.
Fast forward 10 years. Where do
you see yourself?
A hunter professional. I want to work
under a big name first. Someone like
Peter Pletcher – I admire him so much
as a completely amazing hunter rider.
I really love the hunters – it built my
confidence from the ground up. But,
for right now I would like to be Circuit
Champion at WEF with Chromeo.
Do you have any lucky rituals
before showing?
We have a horse named Charlie
and my mom always pronounces his
name weird. I made fun of her once
and now every time I go in the ring she
says, “good luck, Charlie”. For me, I just
shut my eyes and try to visualize my
course.
Exhibitor AlErt
Safety Sam says please keep an extra eye on your personal
belongings heading into the halfway point of WEF 2015! If it
takes an extra 30 seconds to lock your golf cart or dirt bike at the
ring, then please do so. Anything left out by the rings at the end
of the day will be taken to the Exhibitor Entrance Security Gate.
Don’t give thieves the chance!
Lights on motorized vehicles are still a big issue - especially for
those who choose to ride their dirt bikes on Saturday nights.
They don’t HAVE ANY! Please remedy this situation and make it
safe for yourself and other drivers.
One last thing: If you have a dog, a cat, a pig, or other animal,
please put it on a LEASH!
Help us stay safe at PBIEC!
