For the second week in a row Dr.
Betsee Parker’s A Million Reasons,
ridden by Scott Stewart, has taken home
championship honors in the Wrenwood
Farms High Performance Working
Hunters. This was A Million Reasons
second show in the High Performance
Working Hunters, having done the
Second Year Green Hunters last year.
“She [A Million Reasons] is a really good
jumper, a great mover, beautiful, big
stride. She’s like the perfect hunter,”
Stewart said.
The pair turned in only top
performances over the two days of
competition. A Million Reasons won
the handy round and the stake, along
with two seconds over fences and a
second in the under saddle.
Fifty Shades, owned by Meredith
Lipke and shown by Sandra Ferrell,
ended the day as reserve champion.
Staying consistent over both days, the
pair had two thirds and a first over
fences and won the under saddle.
Traveling from Toronto, Canada,
Danielle Baran and her horse Say
When were the WEF 2 Triple Crown
Blankets Adult Amateur Hunter 36-49
champions. Baran rode Say When to
four over fences victories over the two
days of competition.
Reserve Champion honors went to
Ashley Whitner and her own Larkspur.
The combination was second in three
of the four over fences classes.
Baran bought Say When as he was
turning four years old, after trainer Chris
Sorensen felt it would be a good fit.
“We [Baran and Sorensen] brought him
[Say When] along from scratch and
he’s been really great because we have
put all the miles on him ourselves, and
I’ve been able to get used to him over
time” Baran explained.
The time Baran and Sorensen put
into Say When has paid off. Earning
championship honors in the Adult
Amateur Hunters for the second week
in a row, Say When is proving he was
worth the wait. Say When has also
had success in professional divisions.
In 2014, Say When competed in the
USHJA/WCHR Peter Wetherill Hunter
Spectacular and was the Canadian
Hunter Derby Champion.
On the second day of competition
in the FarmVet Amateur-Owner 3’3”
36 and Over, Fredrick, owned by
David Gochman and shown by Becky
Gochman, claimed both over fences
victories. Paired with a second in the
handy round and first in the under
saddle, Gochman and Fredrick ended
up as champions of the FarmVet

Canada’s Ian Millar was the proud winner of Saturday night’s $50,000 Wellington
Equestrian Realty Grand Prix CSI 2* aboard Ariel and Susan Grange’s Dixson
during week two of the 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). In a five-horse
jump-off, Millar and Dixson topped the class by two one-hundredths of a second
over Brianne Goutal (USA) and Remarkable Farms LP’s Zernike K.
Course designer Luc Musette (BEL) set a challenging track for the 45 starters
in Saturday night’s class under the lights of the International Arena at the Palm
Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC). Only five entries were able to
advance to the jump-off, but all went on to clear the short course. The top four
were separated by just fractions of a second.
Paige Johnson (USA) and Salamander Farm’s Dakota set the pace in the
jump-off at 40.99 seconds to finish fourth. Cian O’Connor (IRL) and Adena
Spring’s Quidam’s Cherie upped the time in 40.27 seconds to place third. Millar
and Dixson followed with the winning round in 40.10 seconds. Ljubov Kochetova
(RUS) and Veyron jumped into fifth place in 42.40 seconds, and Goutal wrapped
up the night with a time of 40.12 seconds aboard Zernike K.
A ten-time Olympic veteran for Canada and one of the sport’s most illustrious
stars, Ian Millar had a fantastic 2014 season with Dixson, including a big win in
the $1.5 Million CP International Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows and a trip to
France for the Canadian show jumping team at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian
Games. Millar explained that the 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding (Vigo
d’Arsouilles x Olisco) never missed a beat coming back into competition after a
short rest at the end of the season.
“He had been off since the third week of September, and I didn’t start him
until December again because he lives with Mrs. Grange,” Millar noted. “He had
a nice break and when I got going with him, his conditioning came right back
because they use a treadmill with him. Even though he’s let down, his fitness
is taken care of.”
Following the class, Millar spoke about the course, stating, “Luc is one of my
favorites because he is so subtle. He takes course design to an art form. That

Gochman has had Fredrick less than
a year and has focused on getting to
know him over the past several months.
Not wanting to rush Fredrick, trainer
Scott Stewart and Gochman took the fall
season off, waiting to return to the show
ring this winter. “He [Fredrick] is a bigger
horse than I’m used to, but slowly we are
adapting to each other and he is becoming
a fast favorite,” Gochman explained.
Ellie Ferrigno guided Kristi C Siam’s
horse, Boneparte Z, to three firsts and
a second over fences to finish the final
day of hunter competition as the ECHO
Junior Hunter 3’3” champion. Only
working together for a month, Ferrigno
and Boneparte Z looked like seasoned
partners. “He’s [Boneparte Z] a really
sweet horse. We match really well, and
he’s really fun!” Ferrigno exclaimed.
The reserve champion was awarded to
Molly Zisook and her horse C’est Si Bon.
Over the two days of competition the pair
finished first and fourth over fences and
second in the under saddle. n

This season at the Winter Equestrian
Festival, the beauty of the moving horse
may almost be matched by the static art
curated by Forré Fine Art Gallery and on
display in the Shoppes at International
Club. With roots in Aspen and Vail,
Colorado, Forré Gallery was drawn to
South Florida in 2013, settling in Fort
Lauderdale last October.
Exhibiting internationally recognized
master artists from the 19th and 20th
Century, Forré’s pop-up gallery will call
WEF home for the duration of the 2015
season. Artists showing canvas, sculpture
and mixed media works over the coming
months include Americans Ashley Collins
and Ellen Skidmore, Arturo Montoto of
Cuba, Italy’s Maro Porecetti, Canadian
James Verbecy, and Vik Muniz of Brazil
with a few not-so-little surprises still
upcoming.
According to Assistant Gallery Director
Laurent Kosinski, Andy Warhol’s “Yellow
Moonwalk” will make an appearance in
the WEF gallery later this year. “Warhol’s
blue and yellow moonwalk piece portrays
an astronaut landing on the moon. He did
it the year he died, so they are pretty rare
to come by,” said Kosinski.
While exhibiting artists like Collins and
Skidmore often include nods to the horse
in their work, the parallels between this
particular gallery and a horse show run
deeper. Gallery Director and the woman
responsible for establishing Forré in
Aspen eight years ago, Ania Forré, is
a horse lover herself. “She owns and
rescues horses back in Colorado, so it
seemed like a perfect fit,” said Kosinski
who – while by Ania’s side since Forré’s
founding – can’t say he has the same
familiarity for the equestrian lifestyle. “I
have been in the gallery business for
nearly 20 years, but this is my first time
at a horse show. Watching these animals
jump and seeing how well they are taken
care of is a beautiful thing. I am certainly
learning a lot.”

Stables in Elizabeth, Colorado. She has
been partnered with 14-year-old Swedish
Warmblood Chamonix H for two years
and is eager to showcase the mare’s
talent. “She had a lot of experience before
I got her. She has done some 5* classes
and I don’t have that much experience,
so it’s a nice combination to know my
horse has plenty of scope and I can trust
her throughout the course,” she said. “I
am really looking forward to seeing her
do the different classes offered [in the
series] from the speed to the team event.
It’s a fantastic series, and I have to thank
Equine Couture/Tuff Rider, (Dutta Corp.),
and Artisan Farms. ”
Riders concurred that Musette’s
course was a true test of horse and rider
with lines built on the half stride and big,
wide oxers. But, 21-year-old Bellissimo
maintains it was an even bigger test of
familiarity. “He set a course where you
had to know your horse and whether
they could handle the options that were
there,” she said. “Walking it I didn’t think
18 would go clear, but there were a lot
of exceptionally nice horses and talented
riders and you saw that come out over
this course.”
While Cruciotti and Bellissimo have

found a rhythm with their horses, it was
Shulman’s maiden voyage in the irons
of Venice. “I bought this horse a week
ago and this is my first horse show on
her, so this is very exciting for me. It’s
a good start with her,” said 19-yearold Shulman about the nine-year-old
Swedish Warmblood mare.
“We feel that being part of something
at such a high level really catapults our
brands into the limelight,” said Laurie
Sharma of Equine Couture & TuffRider.
“We love and enjoy every second,
especially being involved in a grand
prix with young, talented riders and to
be seen by so many people. This is the
equestrian capital of the world, so for us
it’s a pure honor.”
Besides sponsoring classes in the
Series, Equine Couture/TuffRider truly
appreciate the input of up-and-coming
riders. Varun “Timmy” Sharma said, “We
have an ambassador program starting,
and we will be electing from winners of
the Series. From the ambassadors, we
look forward to getting product ideas
and input as to how we can improve.”
While the horizon is bright for the top
finishers in this week’s Grand Prix, the
future is also promising for the series as
a whole. n

course designer for this first-ever cross
country event at PBIEC with jumps built
by Eric Bull. Video and live scoring will
also be available.

The Artisan Farms Under 25 Grand
Prix Series, presented by The Dutta
Corp. in association with Guido Klatte,
began with two events at the second
week of WEF. The $10,000 Artisan
Farms Under 25 Grand Prix Welcome on
Saturday afternoon was the first event.
With record entries, this year’s series will
award $170,000 in prize money through
seven events.
Saturday’s one round opening speed
competition saw 59 entries with ten clear
rounds and a win for 18-year-old Eugenio
Garza of Mexico. Coached by Irish show
jumper, Darragh Kenny, Garza galloped
to victory in the winning time of 65.63
seconds aboard El Milagro’s Bariano.
Jessica Springsteen (USA) and Stone
Hill Farm’s Zero finished second in 67.22
seconds.
Garza has owned Bariano, a 14-yearold Belgian Warmblood gelding (Jetset-D
x Skippy), for three years. Among the
pair’s top performances, Bariano helped
Garza earn the individual junior show
jumping gold medal at the 2013 FEI
North American Junior/Young Rider
Championships in Kentucky.
“He is a super horse,” Garza praised
after his win. “He has given a lot to me, and
I am very grateful to him. He was a super
competitive junior horse. He basically took
me from the medium juniors all the way up
to the 1.50m. He is like my teacher, (and)
he is a very winning horse.”
Kelli Cruciotti hasn’t graduated from
high school yet, but has already asserted
herself as one of the most competitive
young riders and a contender in the
Series. From an original order capped
at 68, Cruciotti and Chamonix H, owned
by Serenity Equestrian Ventures, joined
an 18-horse jump-off before taking an
early-season win in the $25,000 Artisan
Farms Under 25 Grand Prix, presented
by Equine Couture/TuffRider.
Returning 13th in the jump-off, Cruciotti
chose an inside turn option to the final two
fences that shaved vital seconds off her
time and stopped the clock at 38.47. The
effort bumped Under 25 Grand Prix Series
veteran Nicole Bellissimo and Bellissimo,
LLC’s VDL Bellefleur to second with a time
of 39 seconds flat. Just fractions slower,
Sydney Shulman aboard Jill Shulman’s
Venice crossed the timers in 39.70
seconds for third place.

A course designer like that will find
weaknesses in a horse and rider. There’s
no way around it - a rider’s flaws are
going to come out and a horse’s flaws
are going to come out.”
Although the time to catch was very
fast, Brianne Goutal was just off the
winning mark for her second place finish
with Zernike K and was very happy with
her mount’s performance.
“He’s amazing,” she smiled. “He is
just a really classical little guy with great
style. He tries really hard. He has been
a little up and down. He was a little bit
inconsistent last year, but all summer
long and fall up until now, he has been
very consistent. He is wonderful, and he
really gives it his best shot each time.
I felt he was super smooth tonight. He
did everything I was asking, going and
coming back really nicely, which is what
I was having trouble with before. I am
thrilled with how he went.”
Cian O’Connor also had a great night
with his mount, Quidam’s Cherie, and was
happy take home the third place prize.
“She is a nice mare. She placed third in
the grand prix of Nations Cup week last
year. She jumped really well. I only gave
her one 1.40m class the first week and
she jumped the WEF (Challenge Cup)
well this week and went double clear
tonight, so I was very pleased with her,”
O’Connor stated. “It wasn’t even one fifth
of a second between the top three. It was
a very competitive class.”

“It was truly an honor to watch Ian go,”
Martin stated. “I have grown up watching
him. He is a complete technician when
it comes to this sport. I thought Brianne
was nearly going to catch him at the end
there, but it was a great class.”
“We have been involved in some
exciting grand prixs since we have been
in town, which has been five years now,”
Varney added. “For a legend like Ian to
win our grand prix is an honor, and we
really do mean that. It is so much fun to
have three riders like this at the top of
their game early in the season and good
luck to them in the weeks to come.”
Goutal noted the great turnout for this
year’s competition and the wonderful
crowd that was at PBIEC to cheer them
on Saturday night. “It is amazing the
crowd that is drawn here. It makes a big
difference for us. It keeps the atmosphere
up and the energy high. Three years
ago, forget five years ago, we didn’t
have anybody in the stands and now it
is packed full on Saturday nights. It is
amazing. Everything is a steady growth
of only good things, I feel,” she said. n

The 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival
(WEF) kicked off its second week
of competition at the Palm Beach
International Equestrian Center (PBIEC)
in Wellington, FL, with a win for twotime Olympic gold medalist, McLain
Ward (USA), and Double H Farm’s HH
Ashley. The pair was fast and clear to
top the $8,000 1.45m speed class over
Laura Chapot (USA) and Quointreau
Un Prince. Mexico’s Nicolas Pizarro and
Temascaltepec placed third.
Also showing on Wednesday, the
$6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m speed
saw a total of 111 entries and was
scored in a California Split, awarding
two sets of prizes. Laura Chapot was
the overall winner to take top prize in
section A with Mary Chapot’s Zealous.
Nicolas Pizarro was second fastest to
earn top honors in section B aboard
Jacobo Zaga’s Calvaretto. In the $6,000
Spy Coast Farm 1.40m jump-off, Abigail
McArdle and David McArdle’s Cosma
20 set the pace early with the fastest of
eight double clear rounds in a 13-horse
jump-off out of 55 competitors. Laura
Chapot also finished second in that class
aboard Mary Chapot’s Umberto.
Canada’s Eric Lamaze and Rosana
du Park are now two for two in this
year’s Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge
Cup Series. Kent Farrington (USA) and
Amalaya Investments’ Waomi were first to
go in Thursday’s highlight class and set
a blistering pace in 40.92 seconds, but
were pushed from the lead moments later
when Lamaze and Artisan Farms LLC’s
Rosana du Park raced through the timers
in 39.78 seconds to win the $34,000 Ruby
et Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round
2. The time proved unbeatable, but Ian
Millar (CAN) gave it his best effort. Millar
cleared the course in 40.75 seconds with
Ariel and Susan Grange’s Dixson to take
second place, pushing Farrington into
third.
Venezuela took the top two places
in the $8,000 1.45m jump-off class on
Thursday morning. Forty-seven showed
with 15 clear rounds to jump-off and
four double clears. Pablo Barrios and
ZL Group, Inc.’s Zara Leandra were
the winners in 40.23 seconds. Emanuel
Andrade and AD Clouwni finished second
in 40.93 seconds. Andrade also won
the High Amateur-Owner Jumper class
aboard Sothis d’Ouilly with the fastest of
12 clear rounds out of 53 entries in 61.05
seconds. Catherine Tyree and Don’t
Go finished second in 61.65 seconds.

clear rounds in 38.95 seconds. Laura
Chapot (USA) finished second in 39.14
seconds riding Mary Chapot’s Umberto.

How did you get your start with
horses?
My mother at age three. She threw
me up on a horse’s back, and we would
ride in the mountains. I did local shows
until I started riding with local trainer
Sharon Bach. That’s when I really started
lessoning and getting more serious
about the hunter/jumper discipline. I
mainly focus on jumpers now – I’m not
very good at beautifying the hunters. I
can’t get enough of the speed in the
jumper ring. I say the faster the better.

What led you to grooming? Why
horses all day every day?
I went to school at Morrisville State
College in New York for Equine Science
because I really didn’t know what I
wanted to do and horses were a passion
of mine. I know now that I want to ride
professionally, but I have to start from the
bottom. I know it’s what I’m supposed
to do and I won’t be a groom forever
– someday I will be in the ring and not
at the in-gate.
What’s your reaction to your first
season in Wellington?
It’s a lot of work! The days are 13hour grinds, but my favorite place is at
shows. I’m most comfortable here. The
best part of my day is being around the
horses. Putting in that hard work and
then seeing them do so well is worth
the lack of sleep.
How did you land with Kevin
Babington?
I answered an online ad for a groom
and after a few conversations with
Kevin’s wife Dianna, I made the decision
to head to Pennsylvania. I manage most
of the client horses and find my own
time in the saddle as often as I can. It’s
a down-to-earth atmosphere, and I am
thankful for that. I appreciate Kevin’s
style and approach to both the care of
the horses and competition. I am trying
to learn as much as I can from him while
I can.

What’s next for you and the barn?
We have exciting plans this year.
Kevin’s major goal is to qualify for the
World Cup Finals, but after Wellington
the barn will move around between

and Devon. n
