Venezuela’s Andres Rodriguez and
Caballito emerged victorious in Saturday
night’s $127,000 Horseware Ireland
Grand Prix CSI 3* during week ten of the
2015 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).
The pair topped a six-horse jump-off
with Juan Ignacio Rojo (ARG) and
Percine Dream in second and Meagan
Nusz (USA) with SRI Aladdin third.
Michel Vaillancourt (CAN) set the
course for Saturday night’s grand
prix at the Palm Beach International
Equestrian Center (PBIEC) with 45
competitors and six clear rounds. In the
jump-off, Rojo guided Gianni Gabrielli’s
Percine Dream to the first clear round
in 48.38 seconds to eventually finish
second. Freddie Vazquez (PUR) and
Messenger Hill’s Zippo Z followed with
four faults in 52.47 seconds to place
fifth. Nusz and Amalaya Investment’s
SRI Aladdin were clear in 49.12
seconds to end up in third.
Ali Wolff (USA) and Blacklick Bend
Farm’s Casall placed sixth after a refusal
and a rail down on the short course in
57.78 seconds. Kent Farrington (USA)
and Robin Parsky’s Blue Angel followed
with the fastest time of 46.94 seconds,
but knocked a rail at the final fence to
finish fourth. Last to go, Rodriguez and
Arao Enterprises LLC’s Caballito cleared
the track in 48.13 seconds for the win.
“I’m very happy,” Rodriguez said of
his victory. “I saw the jump-off start.
Juan was pretty fast, but I knew Kent
was going to go faster than him. It is a
very lucky night when you have Kent
in front of you in the jump-off. I was
thinking something good was going to
happen. He was just in front of me, so I
was going to watch him from the gate
and he had an unlucky rail down. I had
a plan for jump three. That was a hard
jump for me in the first round. I rubbed
it pretty hard. I knew I needed to take
a little bit there and I did. Coming in
the last line there was either the seven
strides or the eight and I thought I was
faster than Juan already, so I went for
the eight and then I looked at the clock.
This is my first grand prix win at WEF
and I have been here for six years, so
this is a big night for me.”
Rodriguez has had a great winter
in Wellington, including back to back
wins in week eight’s $34,000 Ruby et
Violette WEF Challenge Cup Round
8 and $34,000 Nutrena CSIO 1.45m
Classic with his mount Fifty Fifty 111.
Saturday night it was Caballito’s turn,
and the 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding
(Contendro x Argentinus) earned the
biggest win of his career.

Peter Lombardo may have still been jet lagged after a cross-country trip to
Wellington last week, but it didn’t stop him from jumping Academy Award, owned
by Mary Katherine Dick, to a Shapley Grooming Products Regular Conformation
Hunter Championship during WEF 9 and clinching the Week 10 honor again today.
Highlighted by blue ribbons in the stake and over fences with the eight-yearold Danish Warmblood gelding, Lombardo also took home second in the model,
fourth over fences and sixth in the handy for the division championship. Hailing
from Wilton, CT, Lombardo made his way to California in 2000 to work for West
Coast trainer Archie Cox before opening his own Frontier Farms in Moorpark,
California in 2009. A regular winner at HITS Thermal during the winter months,
Lombardo flew six hunters to WEF for two weeks of Florida competition this year.
Lombardo was also Reserve Champion aboard Janie Andrew’s Ante Up with
a win in the handy, third in the stake, sixth under saddle, and second and third
over fences.
In only their third week of showing together this winter, Ellen Toon and JT
Farm’s Iberia made a clean sweep of the Camping World Adult Amateur Hunter
50 and Over Section A over fences classes by winning all four. Coupled with
a seventh-place finish under saddle, Toon and her seven-year old Hanoverian
mare clinched the division.
With husband and trainer Jimmy on the ground, Toon has been flying back
and forth from WEF to their home base in South Salem, New York, giving Iberia
several weeks off from competition. The breaks appeared to be a positive, however,
as consistent scores in the high 80s handed Toon the title over a field of 20.
Continuing a female-domination of the Adult Hunter 50 and Over division,
Sandra Epstein and her own 12-year-old Swedish Warmblood mare Gisele
collected Reserve Champion. Winning top honors in the under saddle, Epstein
who trains with Molly Flaherty of Arcadia Farm in Yorktown Heights, NY, was
fourth and second over fences.
Earlier this week, Ellen Toon admitted that she was feeling a little rusty in the
tack, but it didn’t show as she won her second division championship during Week

Next Generation of Superstars
Set to Compete in
Artisan Farms Under 25 Grand Prix
Series Final
Following an intensive season of
competition at the Winter Equestrian
Festival, the top-ranked riders in the
Artisan Farms Under 25 Grand Prix Series,
presented by The Dutta Corp. in association
with Guido Klatte, are set to compete in the
Final on Sunday, March 22.
This year’s Series, comprised of seven
events, attracted riders from around the
world competing for $170,000 in prize
money. The top 30 riders in the rankings
will face off in the $50,000 CSI-U25 Artisan
Farms Under 25 Grand Prix Final at The
Stadium Derby Field. The morning will
begin with the Artisan Farms Youngest
Rider Leadline competition at 8 a.m.,
followed immediately by the Final.
Now in its fifth year, the popular
Artisan Farms Under 25 Grand Prix Series
was expanded to feature more classes,
increased prize money, and new ‘Under
25’ sanctioning by the United States
Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the
International Equestrian Federation (FEI)
in 2015.
Open to competitors of all nationalities
aged 25 and under, the Series gives up and
coming riders the opportunity to compete
under FEI rules while also gaining valuable
grand prix experience against their peers.
With varying conditions offered for each
class, riders have the opportunity to
compete at a height of 1.45m on grass, allweather footing, under the lights at night,
and in team competition, all of which are
important elements that competitors will
face as their international careers progress.
“Artisan Farms has been proud to
sponsor this Series and watch its continued
growth and evolution over the past five
years,” said Carlene Ziegler who, together
with her husband, Andy, owns Artisan
Farms and was the driving force behind
the creation of the Artisan Farms Under 25
Grand Prix Series. “It has proven to be an
important stepping stone from the junior
and amateur ranks toward the international
Grand Prix ring, and it has been incredibly
gratifying to see participants in the Series
emerging on the world stage.
“This year’s enhanced schedule and
substantially increased prize money are a
reflection of our enthusiasm and commitment
to the Series,” concluded Ziegler.
In 2015, Equine Couture/Tuff Rider,
EnTrust Capital, the McNerney family,
and Kingsland Equestrian stepped
forward to be presenting sponsors of
individual classes within the Series, thereby
strengthening the efforts of title sponsor
Artisan Farms and the Series presenting
sponsor, The Dutta Corp. in association
with Guido Klatte.
With several riders close together in
the current standings, it will be a race to
the finish in the Final. The overall winning
rider will receive a Bruno Delgrange saddle
valued at $6,000, and will be invited to
compete at the CSI2* Chantilly Horse
Show, part of the Global Champions Tour,
to be held from July 16-19, 2015, in France.
In addition to their entry, the winner also
receives two tickets to the Chantilly VIP
lounge, transportation for one horse
generously provided by The Dutta Corp. in
association with Guido Klatte, and layover
at Artisan Farms in Vrasene, Belgium.
The list of past winners reads like a
who’s who of young show jumping talent,
with Reed Kessler of the United States
(2011), Nayel Nasser of Egypt (2012),
Chloe D. Reid of the United States (2013)
and Victoria Colvin (2014) having all
etched their names in the record books.
On Sunday, March 22, a new champion
will be crowned in the Artisan Farms Under
25 Grand Prix Series.
Leading by example, Artisan Farms is
committed to the continued improvement
and promotion of competitive show
jumping. Based in Wellington, FL, and
Vrasene, Belgium, Artisan Farms is home
to rising amateur Andy Ziegler, young
professional Caitlin Ziegler, 2008 Olympic
Champion Eric Lamaze, and Canadian
Olympian Tiffany Foster.

The 2015 Winter Equestrian

of competition at the Palm Beach
International Equestrian Center
(PBIEC) on Wednesday with a win for
Lisa Goldman (USA) and Morocco in
the $34,000 1.45m FEI speed class. In
a field of 70 competitors, the pair led
a blazing fast line-up of Irishmen in
the top four, finishing ahead of Shane
Sweetnam (2nd), Cian O’Connor (3rd)
and Ronan McGuigan (4th).
Goldman and the 12-yearold American-bred Oldenburg/
Thoroughbred gelding (by Roc USA)
have been partners since Morocco was
four years old. The pair already earned
an international win this season in week
eight’s $10,000 Wellington Equestrian
Realty CSIO Speed Stake. They proved
themselves once again by beating
some of the fastest horses and riders
in Wednesday’s bunch.
Also showing on Wednesday, the
$6,000 Spy Coast Farm 1.40m speed
class was held in a California Split
with wins for Hardin Towell (USA) and
Jennifer Gates’ Emilie de Diamant A S

2015 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).
Twenty-five-year-old Dello Joio edged
out Farrington by less than one-tenth of
a second for his first ever WEF Challenge
Cup win.
Michel Vaillancourt (CAN) set the
course for 83 entries in Thursday’s
tenth round of WEF Challenge Cup
competition. He saw 12 clear rounds,
and 10 returned for the jump-off where
only three were able to clear the short
course without fault.
Meagan Nusz (USA) and Amalaya
Investments’ Sri Aladdin were first to
clear the jump-off in 41.88 seconds to
finish third. Farrington and Blue Angel
upped the pace in 38.56 seconds, but
eventually settled for second. Last to go,
Dello Joio and Contiki completed the
winning time of 38.47 seconds. Andres
Rodriguez (VEN) and Arao Enterprises
LLC’s Caballito had the fastest time in
37.10 seconds, but one rail put the pair
in fourth place.

You just let him be and the next time he
might win you the class. The perfect
example is this week.”
“I bought him at the end of his eightyear-old year and I won international
classes with him four years ago, and he
is still winning,” Rodriguez continued.
“We always try to buy new horses and
think that they are going to be way better
than him, and then championships and
big shows come and we look at the barn,
and the one who is ready to go is him. He
is the one we can count on.”
Placing second, Juan Ignacio Rojo had
a great night with Percine Dream and has
also done well with his mount throughout
the circuit. Originally form Argentina, Rojo
lived and showed in Europe for many
years and then moved to Venezuela. He
got Percine Dream from a horse dealer
in France.
“He said he thought she was a
horse that can jump any class, and he
was right,” Rojo detailed of when he
got Percine Dream. “The mare went to
Venezuela and was national champion.
Then this is the first time she got a chance
to go in big sport and she is coming up
with all the solutions. She was clear in a 5*
grand prix already, so my hopes are very
high. She keeps developing. I am really
happy with my horse, and I am happy that
a friend of mine won tonight.”
Third place finisher, SRI Aladdin, is
Continued from Page 1
a horse that Meagan Nusz bought in
Wellington last year and has taken some
time to get to know.
“Every time I get on him I know that I
am so lucky to have one like that in my
string,” Nusz continued. “Tonight is the
first of many for that one I think, and I am
sure he has a win in there somewhere.
He has really stepped up for me. This is
only his second night class. He is really a
trier, and I trust him so much. He is such
a fun horse to ride.”
In addition to the night’s third place
prize, Nusz was presented the award for
Leading Lady Grand Prix Rider (presented
by Martha Jolicoeur in memory of Dale
Lawler) for her success throughout the
week.
Tom MacGuinness, owner and
founder of Horseware Ireland, was also
on hand for the evening and detailed
his company’s long-term involvement
with the horse show, having first come
to WEF in 1987 to visit. MacGuiness
saw the huge changes at PBIEC when
he returned seven years ago, which is
when Horseware Ireland became directly
involved at WEF.
MacGuinness recalled, “I could really
see that this was going to be the number
one venue in the world and that is when
we got serious about sponsoring here.
I don’t think we were wrong. Mark
(Bellissimo) and his team are doing a
hell of a job, and I think they are going to
make show jumping into a spectacle like
Formula 1 or the Indy 500. They have a
good thing going here and we are happy
to support them.”

Of his SSG ‘Digital’ riding gloves, Dello Joio commented, “I like how thin they are

They don’t feel heavy in your hand, and they are soft.”
On Saturday, Cruciotti and Crown scored back-to-back wins in the International Arena.
Cruciotti, 17, of Elizabeth, CO, topped a nine-horse jump-off to win the $10,000 Sleepy
P Ranch High Junior Jumper Classic riding her new mount, Wallenberg, while Crown,

Khrome as a foal.
When Cindy Firestone walked into a
field at Diana Dodge’s Nokomis Farms
in Montpelier Station, Vermont, she
spied a yearling with lots of chrome
and knew she had found her next show
horse. True to his namesake, Khrome
(Popeye K x PI) is now nine and winning
for Firestone and trainer Louise Serio.
We caught up with Firestone who
shared the story of her special horse:
WW: How did Khrome come
to be part of your string?
CF: I was at Tommy Serio’s [Summerfield] in
Keswick, Virginia, with my two other horses,
and Rachel Spencer, who owns Popeye
K, mentioned that Diana Dodge had two
really nice babies for sale. She showed
me pictures and one was of Khrome as a
yearling. We went out to the farm and as
soon as I saw him I knew. After I bought
him, I sent him to Matt Collins for a year
and half for breaking. I brought him back
to Summerfield as a three-year-old, then
brought him to Florida. He was champion
as a three and four-year-old in the baby
greens before I started riding him in the
low adults and adults. This year I’ve moved
him up to the First Years with Louise [Serio]
and after only two shows, he has been
awesome. I think he’s going to be a great
amateur horse this year.
were times when I thought about taking
on a yearling and knew I was facing a
long haul, but it has paid off. I’m told they
have one exact same trait though; they
love, love to go right in the middle of the
paddock during morning turnout and
take a long nap.
10. After clinching the Adult Amateur 50
and Over Section A yesterday, Toon and
James Toon’s Mirror Image took the top
tricolor in the Hunt LTD. Amateur-Owner
Over 35 Division today.
Still in her first year with the Toons at
JT Farm in South Salem, New York, Mirror
Image – an eight-year-old Oldenburg
mare – was imported at the end of the
winter season in 2014 before competing
in the 3’3” Pre-Green and Amateur
divisions.
“This is only my third or fourth time
showing her in the Amateurs and she
gets better each week – this was her
best so far,” said Toon. With wins in both
the handy and stake after a pair of 86s,
Toon was also first and third in the two
remaining over fences classes and third
under saddle.
Taking Reserve Champion honors
behind Toon was Kelley Corrigan and
her own 12-year-old Holsteiner stallion
Macallan. They took second place in the
under saddle, second in the stake and
first over fences with a high score of 88.
WW: What’s your history with
buying American-bred horses?
CF: I’ve had a few. One I bought when
it was only a couple days old off a video.
Like with Khrome, I have had a gut for
right or wrong and they have all worked
out. Mike and Tommy did great work with
Khrome and Louise rides him so well, so
it’s been a great fit. Between them and
the life he had with Diana in Virginia, it
was a great start for him. He was always
treated like a horse with lots of paddock
time and hacking – I think that was a
good introduction and a foundation that
proved to be significant.
To finish hunter competition for WEF
10, Zoe Ganek rode her own horse,
Bellagio, to the tricolor ribbon in the
Coldwell Banker Children’s Hunter 14
& Under. Ganek and Bellagio earned a
first and two thirds over fences, out of 33
horse and rider combinations, on their
way to the winner’s circle. “He [Bellagio]
is the best!” Ganek exclaimed after having
a great weekend.
Elizabeth Chung and Extraordinary
ended the day as reserve champions in
the Coldwell Banker Children’s Hunter
14 & Under. Extraordinary, an entry of
Jennifer Bliss, was first and third over
fences in the final two classes of the
division.
Bellagio is a 10-year-old Warmblood
who was bought by Ganek last summer.
Primarily an equitation horse, Ganek
shows Bellagio in the hunter ring for more
practice. “He [Bellagio] is really easy,”
Ganek stated, “He just stays on the same
rhythm, and he saves me a lot.”

WW:
How
did
he
get
his barn name Batman?
CW: The white markings on his face
look like the Batman symbol and his full
brother’s name is Robin, so Diana called
him Batman and it stuck.
WW: How did you know he
was the right one for you?
CF: He had a presence. I like his type –
short coupled and a lovely face. He is part
of Diana’s foundation breeding program
and that makes him a special horse to all
of us. Sometimes the Warmbloods are late
to develop, so he is just coming into his
own now, but he’s close to moving up and
being where I want him. Having a quality
horse is key, but he always had the brains
too. He’s had so much success, but I think
there’s a whole other range in there.
WW: What is your experience with
the Popeye K line?
CF: I knew him [Popeye K] because
Tommy had ridden him, and I loved him.
When I saw Khrome, there was a lot of his
sire there – gorgeous, quiet, smart, and a
very straight-forward temperament. There

Faces of WEF: Kim Hough
While she may bear the name of a
successful American show jumper, Kim
Hough is of no relation and had never
been to a horse show before this winter.
In her first year as the International Club
Manager, Hough is a new face and
often the first to arrive, last to leave and
loving every minute. Planning milliondollar weddings in her past work, Hough
has been to exotic locations like Nevis
Island, but is happy to have found a
home with Equestrian Sport Productions
in Wellington.
Here’s a closer look at people loving,
reggae listening, always smiling Kim
Hough:
WW: What is your professional
background?
KH: I have been in a lot of different
areas within the event planning industry.
I started in photography with Lila Photo
covering polo and the social scene. I also
did wedding planning, corporate planning,
corporate events and party rentals.
WW: What brought you to event
planning?
KH: I studied Public Relations at SUNY
Oswego in upstate New York state, but
I didn’t really know what I wanted to do.
I love building relationships and when I
realized that I could do that through event
planning and make a living I thought, ‘Sign
me up.’ Once I got into it, I fell in love with
taking somebody’s vision and making it a
reality – seeing it all come together is an
amazing feeling.
WW: Was the horse show industry
completely foreign to you?
KH: Yes, I knew nothing about this world.
It was a little overwhelming at first because
of the size of the space, but the challenges
have been really exciting. Now that I am
understanding the sport, I think I want to
start riding myself!
WW: We are ten weeks in – what’s
your reaction to the experience?
KH: My favorite part is obviously where
we work all day – this is the most beautiful
office you could ask for. I also love getting
to interact with all the members. They have
really taken me in. We can have up to 1,100
people here on a Saturday night, and I
manage about 90 employees throughout
the week. Doing all of that while attending
to the members is a challenge, but so much
fun for me.
WW: Give us a peek into how you
grew up.
KH: I grew up in Oswego, which is a very
small town on Lake Ontario in New York
with one of the most gorgeous sunsets you
will ever see. My father works in nuclear

plants and my mother for an insurance
company. I have an older brother and sister,
as well as three nephews all back in New
York. After college, I needed a little vacation
so I came to Florida and I stayed. That was
seven years ago. I tried to go home for a
while once and I shoveled so much snow
that I said, ‘I’m done. I’m going back to
the beach!’
WW: What keeps you busy outside
of work?
KH: I try to explore as much as possible.
For anybody else, this place is a destination,
and I’m living in it. In college I was captain
of my tennis and crew teams, so I try to find
a rowing machine whenever I can.
WW: You have seen some amazing
places through wedding planning.
Where is your ultimate vacation
destination?
KH: Fiji. Definitely. I would also love to
backpack Europe someday.
