14 General Membership
Well, it is July in Texas and it is hot… and dry! In the
sixteen plus years I’ve lived here, I don’t think I’ve ever
experienced this lack of rain. Maybe, by the time you
will not slow your Chamber down, there are some great
things happening.
The Chamber is focused on our 50th anniversary which is just around the corner. The
Luncheon
committee is working on some fun, new and interesting additions for our celebration. If you
are interested in participating in the planning, the committee meets monthly and we can
always use extra volunteers.
On August 12th, we will again host the New Teachers' Luncheon. This year we will welcome
new teachers and honor the teachers who have served the district for twenty-five years or
more. This is a very popular event, the best way to insure your participation is to get involved
as a sponsor, for details contact Shari Sweeney at 281-488-7676.
As part of your membership, you can take advantage of some great events this summer.
Make the most of your membership, get involved!
Sincerely,
Chairman of the Board
Richard Allen

SAFE BOATING
in Clear Lake
Water Activity Day Events, better known as W.A.D.E.
is a three day training program providing participants
age 13 and over the opportunity to earn their Texas
Basic Boaters Certification.
W.A.D.E. is an award winning program developed
by the Houston Safe Boating Council to promote safe
boating. The program is offered twice a year, in June
W.A.D.E. students participating in the scuba diving course in the pool of Hilton Houston NASA Clear Lake.
and July, at Clear Lake Park, with a maximum of 36
participants per session.
During the course of the three days, participants gain
firsthand experience using sailboats, kayaks, powerboats, personal flotation devices, personal watercrafts
and now scuba diving - instructed in the pool at the
Hilton Houston NASA Clear Lake.
W.A.D.E. students gearing up to kayak.
Triad life raft demonstration.
Chick-fil-A cow enjoying a ride on Clear Lake.
W.A.D.E. student and volunteer instructor on personal water craft.
"We are very excited to integrate scuba diving into
the W.A.D.E. program. It's a great opportunity to enhance our program," said Angie Rizzo, President of the
Houston Safe Boating Council.
W.A.D.E. students also learn valuable skills beyond
boating, like how to properly wear and use life jackets, knot tying applications and how to stay safe in the
heat. At the end of the third day, participants take the
Texas Parks and Wildlife test for their Texas Basic Boaters Certification and upon passing, they are officially
certified.

Dedra Flynn
Area Promotions Division Chairman
The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to
introduce Dedra Flynn as the 2010
– 2011 Area Promotions division
chairman. Flynn is no stranger to
the Chamber, as she has been a
very active member since in 1996.
“I have worked with the Area
Promotions division in the past, I’ve
also served on the board different
times,” Flynn said. “I took a little
break and haven’t been quite as
active as in the past, but now I’m
back and going on strong.”
Flynn was born in Memphis,
Tennessee, and grew up in Iuka,
Mississippi. After attending the University of Mississippi for three years,
she found her passion in cosmetology.
“It’s just something I always
enjoyed doing,” Flynn said. “My
mother was a hair dresser. I grew
up around it. I went to cosmetology school and it’s something that

HORIZONS, JUNE 2011
I’ve been doing since 1977.”
Flynn soon found her way to
Texas in 1981. After a few years,
she decided that it was time to become a business owner. In 1996,
she opened the doors of Lookin’
Good Hair Salon, and has been
successfully ever since.
“It was a little scary opening up
my own business,” Flynn said. “It
was something that I said would
never do, and then one day I decided that I didn’t like where I was
working. The next thing you know,
I’m actually opening up my own
shop. Needless to say, it’s been
very good. I’m glad I did it.”
It didn’t take long before Flynn
found herself, not only as a member of the Chamber, but becoming actively involved in the organization after going on a legislative
and public affairs division trip with
Chamber representatives.
“They came knocking on my
door trying to get me to join the
chamber soon after I opened
shop, and I did,” Flynn said.
“One of the first things that I did
was to go on one of their yearly
trips. I went and really enjoyed
it, and found out that I could
join the membership committee and have a chance to go
again. Soon, I was on a committee trying to do what those
that approached me not too
long before were doing, getting people to join the Chamber.”
Since that time, Flynn has been
a big part of the Chamber, volunteering for events and continuing
to show others the benefit of being
not just a member, but an active
one. She said that it’s because of
the fun events, the relationships
and friendships that are built, and
the good that is done for the surrounding communities that she
has valued being part of the this
organization.
“It’s just the most rewarding
thing being a part of this Chamber
and being active in it,” Flynn said.
“Both for my business and personally.”
When Flynn is not busy with her
business or the Chamber, she and
her husband David enjoy traveling, and are big fans of the Houston Texans football team.
