GBA Newsletter Letter from the President JUNE, 2014 Dear GBA, Happy Spring, finally! Although the winter was brutal hasn’t this been a glorious Spring? My flowering plants and trees never looked better, although I did lose my wonderful huge rosemary bush...how did your yard fare? Your convention co-chairs, Kathy and Lillian, have been hard at work putting together Baskets to Love for us to enjoy when it is winter again. Isn’t Lillian doing an awesome job with our Facebook page? I so enjoy looking often to see what she has posted. If you don’t have FB, find someone who does and get them to pull up the GBA page for you. You will love it! One of their goals is to increase our attendance at the convention and the groundwork has already been laid by their obtaining our beautiful new location. A lot of hours of hard work and shrewd negotiations went into that happening, I assure you. So here’s where you come in-please invite your friends, neighbors, co-workers, family, the clerks at the stores that admire your basket pocketbook (ok, I’ll stop there…we don’t want to appear too obsessed!) to come. Convention is the best place for beginners to learn. Let’s help Kathy and Lillian obtain their goal and make this the best and most attended convention yet. As your President, I welcome your input, questions, comments and suggestions about the GBA so that I can share with the Board and make our association the best that it can be. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 770-962-3486. Happy Weaving, Tracey Reidy Membership Dues GBA membership dues must be paid by July 1, 2014 in order to be eligible for “First Day” status for convention. The North Gwinnett Arts Association began as a thought in 2009, evolving into a reality during the start of 2010. The NGAA was formed with the purpose of bringing artists and art lovers together. The mission of the Association is to connect art lovers with artists through knowledge, skills and friendships. As a non-profit organization, the North Gwinnett Arts Association, Inc. maintains a goal of supporting local charities and schools through fund-raising and active involvement. Based in Suwanee, Georgia, the organization maintains an open membership policy. The NGAA is designed to be a gathering of artists, crafts persons and art lovers from everywhere who bring their experiences, ranging from beginner to professional, local to international, to share and enjoy. Regular monthly meetings include a featured speaker and demonstration, as well as networking opportunities. Membership is open to anyone interested in art! Every year on the third Saturday in May, the NGAA sponsors an Arts & Crafts festival known as Arts in the Park at the Suwanee Town Center. This year over 60 crafters took part in the annual festival. I have participated in this wonderful event since the very first one. This year was the first time Best of Show/First Place awards were given out and I was ecstatic to have received the Best of Show/First Place award in the Elements category – the other categories were Photography and Jewelry. It is a great one day show where I am able to vend my baskets, demonstrate our craft and really get to talk to the people who stop by my booth about basket weaving! River Country Basket Guild: Our guild has continued to meet weekly. Some of the baskets we have made lately are “Woven Cross” and a small Nantucket basket. For many, this was their first experience with weaving a Nantucket. We also have done several kits from NC Basketworks. Many of our group participated in a sweet grass class by Barbara McCormick. Laura Lee Zanger continues to teach twill classes. This year, she has been at NCBA and Stateline. She will be at Upper SC in June and then Jabez, Ky. She continues to design and teach her wonderful Cherokee twill baskets and mats. Suzanne Simoneau PAGE 4 Greater Atlanta Basket Weavers Guild: We will be wrapping up a very successful programming year of weaving on Saturday, June 21 with our Summer Cookout and Election. Linda Lattanzio has graciously volunteered to host this guild event at her Woodstock home. Laurine Haynes, Kathie Smith, and Debi Stultz have each put a lot of time and effort into their respective offices and it’s now time to pass the torch! We are currently looking for members who may be interested in serving the GABG as President, Vice President/Programs, and Raffle Coordinator. After taking a break for the month of July, our August program will be a Nantucket style pencil cup designed by convention favorite Nate Taylor. This basket is woven over a porcelain goblet and measures 3” in diameter and 6” high. The project is woven with cane and adding a white ash rim. Cindy Lampman will lead us in the project! The fall programming is tentatively set, including holiday weaving and preparing for the 2015 GBA Convention. We are excited that the convention will be held in our own backyard at the Hilton Atlanta Marietta Hotel & Conference Center! Annette Roose GABG Secretary/Newsletter P AGE 5 G B A N EW SL ET T ER Gwinnett Basket Weavers Guild: In April, our meeting was held in Tate City. Ann Massey hosted the weekend. We had fun weaving baskets, relaxing, and exploring the community. It was a great way to start Spring! Some of us had a “dyeing party” at Pat Christman’s home in May. It was lots of fun seeing the lovely colors we created. Tisa was so excited that she reached in a bucket and came up with a blue hand! PAGE 6 Shooting Creek Basket Weavers Guild: SCBWG has many talented members who share their knowledge with our guild. Annie Foreman, a former instructor at John C. Campbell Folk School, recently taught the group how to make Nantucket style vases. Everyone was so excited to learn how to make the larger ones, Annie taught a second class on small vases, too! In May, President Kay Swanstrom taught members how to make name tags. We were being creative with dyed reed, buttons, and charms for embellishment. Nancy Jones won 2nd place in Twill Design at NCBA Convention 2014. Kay Swanstrom and Nancy Jones will be teaching at the Bluegrass Area Seminar in Jabez, Kentucky on June 17-21.
