Cow Tales
APRIL 2015
President’s Letter
Let me begin by just saying WOW, the guild had a great Chili Cook-Off! We had over 40 people in
attendance, great chili, a really great demonstration by Jim Linnell, great tool swapping, and great
visiting. It just doesn’t get better than that!
So what have the officers been up to?
We had officers business meeting on Saturday March 28th. One item that we have touched on
several times is the desire to get shirts that have the LSLC logo on them. Pat Spencer has started
this process. We hope to very soon have details for all that might be interested in purchasing a
shirt with the guild logo.
The 2017 IFOG to be held here stays in the forefront of our considerations. A major consideration
is funding this large an activity. The officers have come up with several activities to help in
generating funding. Each of you should have received an email that identifies a SPECIAL RAFFLE
for a Jim Linnell landscape piece. If you are interested in getting tickets be sure to get you money
to Darla no later than April 30th. The details of this raffle are in Darla’s email. There are other
fundraisers planned, details on those will be announced later.
The officers are also talking about having other special raffles to help the guild treasury. Pat has
suggested for members to donated articles that will be raffled. It will be decided if these will be
local or open to all members. One thought is to post these items in the newsletter and see what
interest is generated. So be on the lookout for some of your favorite articles in the near future.
We are also striving to improve our monthly raffles, local members keep watching.
We continue discussing efforts for the 2016 IFOLG display, ideas etc…. This is always a hard
process, but work is on-going and we hope to have something to discuss very soon. This will only
be discussed at the local level, we always like to give everyone a surprise at the IFOLG show.
As for the TCJLS judging event in late March judging plans had to be changed. There were just a
few entries at this years TCJLS event, so instead of the initial judges Dave Smith and Darla Sellers
did the judging for the event.
(Dave please add a brief description on items and winners)
And something new, a planned future activity, that the officers are very excited about, is the
gathering of early leather history and its pioneers and then describing how and where they
developed their style. We plan on initially sharing these findings on the LSLC Facebook page. If you
have attended any of Jim Linnells classes you have had some exposure to this and know just how
interesting it is to hear and learn this history.
The officers have lots of other plans in work but let me save some of that for future discussion.
As always if any member wishes us to pursue something specific please let us know.
Thank you for your support, we look forward to getting everyone involved.

Kathy Flanagan
Is coming to Texas
April 25th and 26th
Sponsored by Lone Star Leather Crafters Guild
Kathy is a long time leather artist with a flair for realistic carvings. Her inspiration
comes from the beauty of the mountains where she lives in Conifer Colorado. She has a
constant menagerie of animals that surround her on a daily basis. Whether they are
wild or live with her, they are the basis of her attention. Her work has been displayed in
the Al Stohlman Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and Kathy is a constant contributor to
The Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal. Edd Lucas, Chairman of the Competition
Committee for the International Federation of Leather Guilds said “In a word, Kathy’s
work can be described as simply ‘gorgeous’. Her design lay-out and carving can be
defined as refreshing, her landscapes are impressive and real, and her animal figures
take on the envied life-like presence.”

Special drawing for Jim Linnell Landscape
AT the March 14, 2015 LSLC Guild meeting Jim Linnell performed a
demonstration showing the normal use and special uses of various
stamping tools. At the completion of the demo Jim was very gracious
and gave his demonstration piece to the guild to be a raffle item. This
scene is approximately 3 ½ in x 4 ½ in.
The guild officers have decided to hold a special raffle that will be open
to all guild members (not just the local members). Tickets will be sold
during the month of April and the drawing will be held at the May
guild meeting. Winner will be contacted by email, details of the drawing
will be documented in the June newsletter.
Tickets are $ 3 each, 2 for $5 or $5 for $10. Tickets can be purchased
by contacting Darla Sellers at [email protected] , payment can be made
by PayPal or by sending a check. Upon receipt of payment tickets will
be drawn and numbers documented and sent to purchaser. Funds
must be received prior to drawing to be eligible.
