Section A
1.Read the following passage carefully and choose the correct option for the questions that follow:
Particular emphasis in this is on the problems of the aged because the world is turning grey at a rate
faster than population growth. Life expectancy in India which was just 30 years in 1947 is now 62 years,
accounting for 65 million elderly today.
As the number of elderly citizens is growing all over the world, the most vital question which ishaunting
the senior citizens in recent years is, why should they live longer if there is no purpose for it? The
economy based on complete mechanisation and computerisation has rendered manpower redundant in
most of the advanced western countries. To counter the problem of redundant manpower, first the
working hours were reduced, when weekend holidays increased (earlier it was only Sunday, now
Saturday and in some offices it is only four days a week), then the age for retirement was reduced and the
maximum age for getting a job was also increased.
In the 1930’s an average American retired at the age of 65. This upper limit has been continuously
brought down – 62, 58, 55 or even less. So a retired person now has at least 25 years of life to spend, a
period when most of them are made to realise that they have become useless for this world. The loss of
status in family and community becomes a source of utter frustration and maladjustment.
Consequently, in such circumstances ‘waiting for death’ becomes quite common for majority of them.
In the western societies, the family bonds are quite loose and weak, as a result the elders cannot even
engage themselves with their grandchildren to spend time. Old age homes can be found everywhere and
now even the elderly prefer these. The parks in the vicinity are full of them so are the clinics of
psychiatrists.
All of them have just one complaint – dissatisfaction from life because of utter boredom which they have
to face. The most distressed are the teachers who have developed the habit of two-way
communication all their life due to their profession. All of a sudden, this comes to an end with retirement.
Similarly, the white collar and factory workers suddenly find a break from their routine life to which they
have become accustomed over the years. This results in “withdrawal symptoms” for some while the
others face severe psychiatric problems.
The most important problem for them is undoubtedly the long and forced period of retirement. The active
among these start looking for new jobs and consequently in interviews, a number of grey-haired persons
can be seen — all keen to start life afresh and give meaning to their monotonous and dull life.
1. Life of an average Indian at present is
(a) 65 years (b) 62 years (c) 50 years (d) 70 years

2.Read the following passage carefully and choose the correct option for the questions that follow:
The school is a place where education of mind, soul and body is imparted. Books stimulate mind
while education makes a man mature. Physical education in school is the only way to help the
child to maintain a sound body to preserve a sound mind.
Physical education in school provides an opportunity for physical growth. Regular physical
exercises form its integral part. They keep the body in perfect shape. Besides this, health
education is also imparted. This includes knowledge about food habits and personal hygiene.
Regular outdoor games are the attractions of physical education. Children, while playing, learn to
play with a sportman’s spirit. Rules bind them to be disciplined and act in a coordinated manner.
They learn to follow their Captain and achieve their targets.
Physical education in schools provides relaxation after mental work. It gives an opportunity to
come out of the four walls of the classroom and enjoy themselves. Children feel free on the
fields. Thus physical education actually helps in the all round development of the child.
1. Physical Education in schools is required to
(a) to break the monotony (b) to make students physically strong
(c) to give students free time (d) to allow other teachers a rest
2. Health Education includes
(a) playing football (b) playing chess
(c) knowledge of food and hygiene (d) running in the fields
3. Playing games in a group, helps children to learn
(a) coordination with others (b) how to quarrel among themselves
(c) about games (d) how to do better than others
4. In order to have all round development of a child we must have
(a) a library (b) computer class (c) craft class (d) physical education
5. The term ‘stimulate’ means
(a) rouse (b) offer help (c) to work hard (d) to work persistently
3. Read the following passage carefully and choose the correct option for the questions that follow:
According to the New York based Wildlife Conservation Society, if immediate corrective measures are
not taken, the tiger will be extinct by the year 2000. The alarming rate at which the tiger population in
the world is depleting is the result of hunger for tiger bones in several East Asian and South-East Asian
countries, with the tiger population in China and Taiwan virtually wiped out. Smugglers are concentrating
on poaching tiger in India which along with Nepal is the home of about half the world’s tiger population.
The population of the tiger in the country has declined sharply from 4324 in 1989 to 3750 in 1993.
According to the current estimate, one tiger is being poached every day in the country. If the present state
of affairs is allowed to continue, the next generation will be lucky to see the majestic animals even in the
zoos.
A little over two decades ago, India launched the “Project Tiger” covering nine National Parks, which
was by far the most ambitious project to save tiger. Initially the project claimed tremendous success.
However, in the last few years, the systemic killing of tigers by poachers has led to sharp decline in the
number and the wheel seems to have turned full circle. Even Kailash Sankhala, the architect of “Project
Tiger” has turned a critic of the project. In fact, some of the protected forces have become killing field for
tigers. Illegal trade in the endangered species is flourishing in China and Taiwan, where there is an
unsatiable demand for tiger-derived medicines. Many used tiger bones aphrodisiacs. Thus, in a way, the
economic success of ‘East Asia’ state is responsible for the faster depleting population of the tigers.
The launching of the ‘Bagh Bachao Andolan’ which is a movement of several organisations, has put the
save tiger campagin back on rails. Public awareness campaign is the need of the hour. There are of
couse laws against poaching but their enforcement leaves much to be desired. There is also need to
coordinate efforts with international campaign to put pressure on countries like China and Taiwan where
trade in tiger bones and skin is flourishing despite an official ban. No less important is the need to break
the nexus between poachers/smugglers and the law enforcing agencies. Unless Sansar Chanda and
Veerappans are tamed and brought to book the campaign to save the tiger will remain a cry in wilderness.
1. After wiping out the tiger population in China, poachers have now focussed on
(a) Taiwan (b) Singapore (c) Malaysia (d) India and Nepal
2. After showing initial success ‘Project Tiger’ failed because
(a) lack of facilities (b) minor punishment
(c) systemic killing of tigers (d) lack of interest
3. Tigers are killed mainly for
(a) flesh (b) aphrodisiac medicine (c) its skin (d) to show bravery
4. To save tigers, the government has to
(a) have more zoos (b) tame Veerapans and Sansar Chands of today
(c) set up more projects (d) create more national parks
5. The term ‘systemic’ means
(a) the whole system (b) type of epidemic (c) periodical (d) continuous
4. Read the following poem and choose the best option for the questions that follow:
FROM CHILDHOOD TREASURES
“MY LITTLE YELLOW EASTER DRESS”
My Easter Dress that year was just as yellow
as the yolk of an egg. My accommodating
sister, eight years my senior, had made the dress
for me. She didn’t make me a coat, just the
dress, and I have the appreciative feeling
she’d made what she knew how to make
Now as fate would have it, it was a cold
Easter that year. I can shiver now as
I think of how cold it was! But it was my
resolve that even if icicles should form around
me or if my face should become a massive
display of goose flesh, I knew I was
looking good that Easter and -- coat or no coat--
I intended to strut my stuff in my new
yolk-yellow dress, and it a pure silk
one too, a fashionable Crepe de Chine!
NAOMI F. FAUST
1. The poet was very elated to have
(a) a new coat (b) a new Easter dress (c) a pink dress (d) her sister’s dress
2. “As yellow as the yolk of an egg” is
(a) a metaphor (b) alliteration (c) a simile (d) imagery
3. The sister did not make a coat because
(a) she didn’t want to make it (b) it was very expensive to make
(c) she didn’t know how to make it (d) she never got the material for a coat
4. The poet felt extremely cold so
(a) she never wore that dress (b) she covered it up
(c) she showed off her dress as if she did not feel the cold
(d) the dress was very thin
5. The poet’s greatest pride was that the dress was
(a) fashionable (b) yellow (c) home-made (d) very small
