Powered by a 12-cylinder, turbocharged, 2,000-hp 251-series prime mover, the C420’s direct competitor in 1963 was the EMD GP18. In fact, EMD did not offer a 12-cylinder, 2,000-hp prime mover until the GP39 model was produced in 1969. The shorter 12-cylinder engine block allowed the C420 to have its distinctive set-back cab and extended short hood. The first road to purchase the C420 was the Lehigh & Hudson River, with its first two units built in 1963. The largest fleet was purchased by the Long Island Railroad, with 30 units built between 1963 and 1968. All were equipped with a high short hood which housed a steam generator for passenger service. Over time, the largest fleet of C420s was amassed by the Louisville & Nashville. While only 26 units were purchased new, their total fleet grew to well over 60 units through mergers and acquisitions. The C420 can still be found in daily service today in the US. Currently the largest fleet of C420s is operated by the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad. This run of Atlas C420 Locomotives feature Phase 2 versions, featuring both Low & High Nose models. Early phase 2 locomotives feature phase 1-style walkways/sills with stanchions mounted into the top walkway deck (referred to as “Phase 2a” models). Later phase 2 locomotives feature a revised configuration where the stanchions are mounted to the sides of the sill (referred to as “Phase 2b” models). Phase 2a production ran from December 1964 through September 1965. Phase 2b units were produced from December 1965 through the end of C420 locomotive production in August 1968. 27 y A tla s M o d el R a i l r oa d C o. , Inc . y HO MASTER C420 LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES: • Redesigned AAR type B truck sideframes with optional bearing covers • Flat or “step” pilots used where appropriate • Long hood with or without dynamic brake detail used where appropriate • 3,100 gallon fuel tank • Long Island Railroad units will feature correct air horn placement, correct snow plaw and include smoke deflectors for the long hood, as well as Hi-Ad trucks Cuyahoga Valley Scenic¥ Additional features include: • Separately-applied scale detail parts include: windshield wipers, metal grab irons, coupler cut levers, multiple-unit hoses, train line hoses, fine scale handrails, drop steps, cab sun shades and more! • See through step detail on sill • Etched metal radiator walkway • Painted crew members • Factory-equipped with AccuMate® knuckle couplers • Coupler pocket designed to accept AccuMate® Proto-couplers • Five-pole skewed armature motor with dual flywheels for optimum performance at all speeds • Directional lighting with golden-white LEDs Guilford (Delaware & Hudson) Atlas Master™ Series Silver Additional Features: • NMRA 8-pin plug for DCC (Decoder-ready) Tennessee Central Atlas Master™ Series Gold Additional Features: • Gold versions will be sound equipped Sound Functionality FEATURES: Please see page 12 Road Name/Road Numbers Silver Item # Gold Item # C420 Ph.2a Low Nose LOCOMOTIVE Undecorated (w/o nose light, w/ DB) 10 001 973 10 001 998 New PAINT SCHEME Seaboard Coast Line*¥ 1215, 1224, 1236 10 001 974-10 001 976 10 001 999-10 011 001 C420 Ph.2b Low Nose LOCOMOTIVE Undecorated (w/o nose light, w/ DB) 10 001 977 10 011 002 New ROAD NUMBERS Lehigh & Hudson River¥ 23, 28 10 001 978-10 001 979 10 011 003-10 011 004 New PAINT SCHEMES Cuyahoga Valley Scenic¥ 365 10 001 980 10 011 005 Guilford (Delaware & Hudson) 420 10 001 981 10 011 006 Tennessee Central 400, 401 10 001 982-10 001 983 10 011 007-10 011 008 C420 Ph.2a High Nose LOCOMOTIVE Undecorated (w/ DB) 10 001 984 10 011 009 New PAINT SCHEME Norfolk & Western¥ 413, 417 10 001 985-10 001 986 10 011 010-10 011 011 Norfolk & Western (w/ NW)¥ 415, 416 10 001 987-10 001 988 10 011 012-10 011 013 C420 Ph.2b High Nose LOCOMOTIVE Undecorated (w/o DB) 10 001 989 10 011 014 New PAINT SCHEMES Long Island “Blue Wave” 224, 226, 229 10 001 990-10 001 992 10 011 015-10 011 017 Long Island “Red Wave” 222, 225, 227 10 001 993-10 001 995 10 011 018-10 011 020 Louisville & Nashville* 1318, 1319 10 001 996-10 001 997 10 011 021-10 011 022 Undecorated MSRP: $159.95$249.95 MSRP: $169.95$259.95 Norfolk & Western¥ Norfolk & Western (w/ NW)¥ Long Island “Blue Wave” Long Island “Red Wave” *CSX Licensed Product ¥includes dynamic brake detail Louisville & Nashville* y A tla s M odel R a i l r oa d C o. , Inc . y 28 w w w .a t l a sr r.c om • 908.687.0880 Chessie System (C&O)* HO SCALE 4th QUARTER 2016 ARRIVAL HO MASTER B23/30-7 LOCOMOTIVE www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/hob307c.htm To Order Online: http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-393-h106.aspx & http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-404-h114.aspx General Electric’s “Dash 7” locomotive line was introduced as a replacement for the older “Universal-Series” of the 60s and early 70s. “Dash 7” series improvements included increased fuel efficiency, tractive effort and reliability. The B23-7 was a direct replacement for the 2,250HP U23B model, while the B30-7 replaced the 3,000HP U30B. The first B23-7s were produced for Conrail in September, 1977, and the first B30-7s were produced for Frisco three months later. B23-7 production continued through 1984, with a total of 535 units built. Conrail was the largest purchaser of the model, with a total fleet of 141 units. 199 B30-7s were produced through 1981, with the combined fleets of Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt being the largest at 110 units. Several features distinguished B23-7s and B30-7s from predecessor models. The long hood stepped outward in the area of the exhaust stack to accommodate a relocated oil cooler. In addition, the frame was 2 feet longer than that of the U23B. An FB-2 style truck was offered as standard equipment, but some railroads opted to use “trade-in” trucks. Therefore, AAR type B and Blomberg trucks could be found on some models. Six power assembly doors (located near the center of the long hood) indicated that the B23-7 was powered by a 12-cylinder GE FDL engine. Eight power assembly doors in the same location help to identify the B30-7, which included a 16-cylinder FDL engine. These six-axle, 4,000hp engines are still in service today in North America. The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW was produced by General Electric between 1989 and 1993 as a follow-up to the successful Dash 8-40C locomotive. The most distinguishing feature of this model was the introduction of GE’s version of the widenose “North American Safety Cab.” This style of cab would become a common sight on railroads across the country. Four major railroads purchased the Dash 8-40CW in fairly large quantities, including Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe and Union Pacific. Most of these units are still in regular mainline and heavy-haul freight service today. Due to various mergers, they can also be seen operating for new owners Norfolk Southern and BNSF. The Train Master was the most powerful locomotive at the time, developing a whopping 2400h.p.. This versatile locomotive could be seen in both passenger and freight duties across the US and Canada. Not to be outdone, Atlas brings to you a finely detailed engine, featuring multiple carbody phases, wire grab irons, razor sharp printing, and more! Domestic designs were considered, but the approved locomotive design was presented by the Swedish firm ASEA. Assembly began in 1978 at EMD, with the original bodies produced by the Budd Company and other components imported from Sweden. Amtrak’s original order was for 47 units which were delivered between 1980 and 1982. This effectively removed the GG1 from regular Amtrak service. An additional seven units were delivered to Amtrak in 1988. Several Northeastern commuter agencies also took an interest in this model, with Maryland’s MARC and Pennsylvania’s SEPTA each purchasing a small fleet of AEM-7s. New Jersey Transit purchased the similar ALP-44 model from ASEA Brown Boveri in the early 90s. NJ Transit recently retired their fleet of ALP-44s, and Amtrak’s AEM-7 fleet has been greatly reduced as new ACS-64 locomotives are placed in service. It is possible that 2016 will be the last year of operation for this once common model on the Northeast Corridor. Included with this production run are several “what-if” paint schemes. All schemes represent railroads that, at one time, operated electrified passenger service over parts of their system. This includes the Reading, which could be considered a “heritage” paint scheme for SEPTA. The Pennsylvania Railroad developed the New York City to Washington, DC portion of the busy Northeast Corridor where Amtrak’s AEM-7s currently run. Finally, the Milwaukee Road had electrified two separate portions of their famed Pacific Coast Extension. 35 y A tla s M o d el R a i l r oa d C o. , Inc . y HO MASTER AEM 7 LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES: • Operating pantographs • Die-cast chassis • Dual flywheels • AccuMate® couplers • Operating head lights and marker lights which are directional • Full cab interior with painted crew members • Separately-applied wire grab irons • Astounding roof detail • Accurate painting and lettering where appropriate • NMRA 8-pin plug for DCC • Gold version will be sound equipped Amtrak “as delivered” 953 Sound Functionality FEATURES: • Over 20 sound effects are available, including engine start-up and shutdown, prime mover sounds through all eight notches, bell, air horn, air compressor, dynamic brakes and more. • There are 16 user-selectable horns, 2 user-selectable bells, and 2 user-selectable synchronized brake squeals. • Manual and Automatic Notching modes with the ability to change modes ”on the fly” are provided for true realism. The “40-series” included a six-axle and four-axle model, the latter being the GP40. A total of 1,145 units were produced between 1966 and 1972. These turbocharged 3,000hp locomotives were used primarily in road freight service. The GP40 was a versatile locomotive that could be found across the US hauling drag freights over mountain passes and leading high-speed intermodal trains across flat terrain. Three rooftop radiator fans at the rear of the long hood differentiate a GP40 from its lower horsepower counterpart, the GP38, which has two fans at this location. Concurrent with GP40 production, EMD offered a lower horsepower, non-turbocharged locomotive based on the same 645-series prime mover. The four-axle GP38 was rated at 2,000 hp and had the advantage of costing less than the GP40. A total of 727 units were produced between 1966 and 1971 when the model was superseded. The wheelbase of the GP38 was identical to that of the GP40. Both units shared the same EMD road-switcher style body that was introduced with the GP35 in 1963. A desire for standardization caused the GP38 to share the same wheelbase, frame and many external components as the GP40. The GP38 was purchased by large and small roads alike. It was routinely found in local and road freight service throughout the US. Many GP38s and 40s are still in service today. Options on the Atlas GP38 and GP40 models include a long hood with or without dynamic brakes and an underframe with 2,600 or 3,600 gallon fuel tanks. The low hood S-1 and S-2 models replaced ALCO’s unique high hood switchers of the 1930s. S-2s rode on Blunt trucks, similar to the earlier high hood models. While only 177 high hood switchers were produced, ALCO would produce over 3,200 examples of the S-series switcher between 1940 and 1961. Part of this success may be due to the War Production Board’s requirement that ALCO produce only switchers during most of World War II. The S-2, specifically was produced between April 1940 and June 1950 with 1,376 units delivered in the USA, 103 to Canada and 23 to Mexico. Due to the number produced, these units could be found in service throughout North America on nearly every major railroad of the time period. Many would go on to work for second and third owners throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Only a few examples of this once common model exist today on tourist railroads, shortlines and in museums. Although previous USRA designs also achieved widespread distribution, their success was mostly due to government control rather than popular acceptance. The 1937 AAR Box Car also had many features that became standard on boxcars for years to come, including dreadnaught ends, straight panel roof and an inside length of 40’ 6”. They had an interior height of 10’ with a 3700 cubic foot capacity. With only a few variations built, this design helped the industry realize the economic advantages of freight equipment standardization; a concept that continues into the modern era. During the 1940s, the petroleum industry began marketing LPG as a cleaner and more efficient fuel than the existing coal and oil. Transporting LPG requires specially designed high-pressure tank cars. During the early 40s the only ACF® tank car that qualified was the 10,500 gallon high-pressure tank car. After the war, ACF® set out to design a whole new car for the emerging industry. As a result the 11,000 gallon tank car was introduced by ACF® in 1947. Many thousands were built up through the mid-1950s. The Atlas model faithfully reproduces this late steam/early diesel era tank car in two versions (with and without platform rails). The cars with top platform rails were used where there was no elevated loading/unloading facility. The cars without the top platform rails were often specified for customers that had access to elevated loading and unloading facilities. These flexible locomotives were designed to provide a one-seat commute from NJ TRANSIT’s various diesel-only lines into the electrified territory that leads to New York City’s Penn Station. This fulfills the requirement of not operating diesels through the North River Tunnels and within the subterranean Penn Station complex. Produced by Bombardier Transportation in Kassel, Germany, the first ALP-45DP locomotive entered service on NJ TRANSIT on May 30, 2012. NJ TRANSIT’s 35 ALP-45DP locomotives are commonly seen on commuter trains traversing the Morristown Line, Montclair-Boonton Line, Raritan Valley Line, and North Jersey Coast Line. These lines do not have overhead electrical wires for their entire length, necessitating a change of power source somewhere en route. Previously, locomotives or entire trainsets would have to be changed, inconveniencing riders. The ALP-45DP alleviates this need, performing the switch from diesel to electric power (or vice versa) in just under two minutes during a routine station stop. These cab cars are used on the opposite end of the train from the ALP-45DP locomotive to facilitate “push-pull” operations, where the engineer in the cab car can control the locomotive pushing from the other end of the train. A cab car provides an engineer with all of the same controls as a locomotive cab, allowing the train to reverse direction without turning around. Cab cars also include all standard locomotive safety features, such as a horn and bell. The multi-levels’ fixed 2-2 seating arrangement provides ample legroom and maximizes passenger comfort while increasing capacity. All of NJ TRANSIT’s cab cars also include toilets. NJ TRANSIT’s multi-level cab cars have a capacity of 127 commuters (approximately 17% more than its single-level counterpart, the Comet V). These cars routinely operate over most routes on both the Hoboken and Newark Divisions of NJ TRANSIT, carrying more than 300,000 commuters daily to and from destinations all over New Jersey and into New York’s busy Penn Station.
