patterns on file to accurately bend a set
of pipes to exact OE specifications.
The DCE and VOE-2 mufflers run from
$389 (single DCE muffler with control
kit) to $899 (specific VOE-2 version
with Pontiac style control kit) and are
available both from Waldron’s and
from Ames Performance Engineering.
Authorized installers include e-Muscle
in Middlefield, Connecticut, and
Masterworks Automotive Services in
Madison Heights, Michigan.
We followed along as Joe installed
Waldron’s VOE-2 reproduction system
on Beau Brook’s original, unrestored
1970 Ram Air IV Judge. We also
installed Waldron’s reproduction
aluminized exhaust and tail pipes, and
with the VOE mufflers, everything fit
perfectly.
The VOE-2 and DCE installation
packages include all the necessary
tubing, vacuum hoses, control switch,
bracket, vacuum reservoir tank and a set
of high quality stainless steel dual-mode
mufflers. In “Quiet” mode, the exhaust
tone is very similar to the original factory
sound. Open up the mufflers and the
exhaust note is deep and powerful,
and flow is increased by as much as 37
percent. Nail the throttle and the VOE2 growls like a tameless tiger, exactly
as John DeLorean imagined the Tiger
Button would.

6 Next, Joe Tonietto drilled holes
through the top of the inner fender’s
two stamped bosses that indicate
where the canister tank attaching
screws are to be located. Joe used
a hammer and punch to dimple the
bosses for drilling

9 The new Waldron’s exhaust pipes
were a perfect fit and will look great
and last for years, thanks to their
aluminized construction. We slipped
on the old flange bolts and tightened
them to the exhaust manifolds.
7 Here, Beau Brook and Joe gently
separated the inner and outer fenders
and slipped the reservoir tank between
them, then attached the 5/32” vacuum
hose to the canister fitting before working
the canister up between the fenders and
screwing it in place. The inner and outer
fenders could then be re-secured.
10 With Beau’s help, Joe positions the
VOE muffler to slip into the tailpipe,
after applying a small amount of
sealant to the inlets and outlets. The
sealant helps the pipe slide into the
muffler outlet and ensures a good seal
with no leaks. With the mufflers in
place, we aligned the pipes for correct
placement.
8 We decided to replace the old
exhaust system on the ‘70 Judge with
a set of Waldron’s aluminized head
and tail pipes. To ease removal of
the old pipes and installation of the
new ones, we dropped the rear and
removed the springs.
11 After slipping in the tailpipes and
twisting them around, we were able to
align them correctly. The rusty hanger
bracket was replaced by a correct
reproduction on each side. With the
pipes in place, we reinstalled the rear
coil springs.
