WELCOME TO THE

SCOTTDALE FESTIVAL
Welcome to the 2014 Scottdale Fall Festival. This year the park, where the festival takes place has
been renovated with new sidewalks and vegetation. The park was redesigned with permeable concrete
to allow water to infiltrate into the ground. The upgrades to the park is one of many projects that the
community can be proud of. The Scottdale Fall Festival has dedicated this program to recognize all of the
community sponsored activities.
The Scottdale Fall Festival has been around for 40 years. Although the festival has had many names over
the last 40 years, the principles never changed. The festival has always been a festival for the community
of Scottdale. The idea started with the 100 year anniversary celebration of Scottdale. A group of Scottdale
citizens created a celebration for the 100 year anniversary of the town. This group of people then decided
to have an annual festival called the Scottdale Coke Heritage Festival. The year was 1974 when the first
festival started. The festival would change names several times over the years until its present day name,
The Scottdale Fall Festival. The present day name of the Scottdale Fall Festival has been around now for 17years. This is one of many events that the citizens of Scottdale can be proud of. This festival was created by
the community of Scottdale; for the community of Scottdale.
Over the last 40 years the festival has attracted people of all ages and helps promote local businesses in
our community. This three day celebration has many events such as a dog show, live entertainment, a race,
ethnic foods, children’s area, a teen dance, and much more. A list of events, food, and entertainment can be
found on pages 4-9. The Scottdale Fall Festival committee thanks you for attending and making this festival
bigger and better each year!

Fonic
The band “FONIC” is comprised of former members of Switch
and Shakedown. They are a high energy group of musicians that
provide not only an incredible rock sound but are also a visually
entertaining performance as well. Between the high energy crowd
mingling’s of the lead vocalist, the constant action of the guitarists,
as well as the amazingly entertaining twirling and tossing of sticks
by the percussionist, the show has proven to be successful in pleasing
large crowds at all levels of the performance. While FONIC is a
defined Rock Cover Band covering the greatest music of the 80’s, 90’s
and today, through experience, they understand the demand of the
selection providing a dance atmosphere. The songs chosen are always
with the crowd’s participation in mind.
All of the members of FONIC have played numerous outdoor family
venues and understand the meaning of playing appropriately to the
crowds, using the best of judgment when making song selections and
editing for content.

(formally of Switch and 6ft. Symun), Joel Sanders - Lead/Rhythm guitar, vocals (formally of Shakedown), Keith

Sputzy
No matter what name you know him by, this former lead singer of “Gigolo” & “Modern
Man” will make sure you don’t forget him. This becomes evident when you listen to his
first solo CD entitled “Not Just Any Love Song”, and album entitled “Too Much Too
Soon”. After his departure from Gigolo, Sputzy went on to perform with “Modern Man”,
who had national dance chart success. Sputzy’s vocal performance with Modern Man
was also featured on the soundtrack of George A. Romero’s film, “Day of the Dead”.
When the members of Modern Man parted ways, Sputzy’s unique vocal style landed him
numerous national radio commercials. Sputzy has built and maintained a loyal following,
and regularly packs clubs throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, & West Virginia. His current
touring band is called “Soul Provider”. Over the years the bands have changed, but one
thing has remained the same, his soulful style. Sputzy’s from the heart performance on
his debut 11 song album entitled “Too Much Too Soon” displays his vocal versatility. He artfully delivers ballads like
“Forever”, “Anyone Who Had A Heart”, & “Not Just Any Love Song” , along with harder edged songs such as “Mercy,
Mercy, Mercy”, “See-Saw”, “You Can Leave Your Hat On”,& “Double Agent ‘O Soul”. He gives each song it’s own
persona with an injection of soul. His original influences include Ray Charles & Aretha Franklin. At a young age,
Sputzy felt their albums were more important that his vocal training. He would take money given him by his parents
for voice lessons, and buy the latest albums by these artists. Along with God given talent, these early influences helped
to develop his rich vocal style laden with soulful emotion.
Abacus Jones
Abacus Jones met in a small club south of Pittsburgh
about 10 years ago when the Materkowski brothers
(Joe and Tony) went to check out a local Blues band
that was all the rage. The air had a smell of Lambrusco
and asbestos. Joe and Tony, who were teenagers at the
time, fell in love with the vibe the band was throwin’
down that night. The Chuck Ramsey Band, fronted by
Chuck himself, was a complete anomaly. Chuck was
a sixty-something Motown era session bassist who had played with everybody who was anybody. In his retirement,
he decided to put together a Frankenstein group with a mysterious drummer and a bombastic guitar player named
Shawn (click here). Oh, and Jason Cursi played congas with them too. After a 10 year Spinal-Tappish quest for a
drummer with their band Ahab and distractions such as college and solo projects, Joe and Tony learned of Chuck’s
passing and decided to put together a tribute concert in his memory. Yeah, Jason played that too. The boys had so
much fun that they just had to carry on. Abacus Jones was born.

METRO
Metro is a dynamic 4 piece band featuring 3 lead vocalist instrumentalist
backed by a driving rhythm section. The band was formed in 1989 out of a
shared love of music and a passion to entertain fans with dance music, while
having a great time doing it. With an eclectic mix of music encompassing
R & B, Country, Funk, Motown, Pop, and Rock that captivate the listening
audience while performing high-energy dance music and lively party songs that
make Metro one of the most unique and entertaining dance bands around. This
dynamic four-piece ensemble consists of Elisha Costello (vocals), Chris Caruso
(bass, vocals), Jeff Pogas (guitar, vocals) and Bob Breakiron (drums, percussion).
Metro performs over 100 shows a year including nightclubs, fundraisers, private
parties, fair, festivals, weddings, and more.
A truly diverse band, Metro’s members each bring unique talents to the
stage and deliver high energy shows that make their faithful fans want to dance
all night. Metro’s fun-loving spirit and undeniable musical talent come together to give you a fantastic
experience that you won’t soon forget.
Tony Janflone
Tony Janflone. Jr. knew what he wanted to do with his life at the early age of 13. He wanted to be a guitarist.
He had been playing since the age of 9 and having been influenced from his earliest days by his father, also a
guitarist, and his exposure to all facets of music, Blues, Rock, R&B, Jazz, Country, and Classical, his love of music
was inherent and not to be denied. Tony enjoys success with his group, “The Tony Janflone Jr Band “, capturing
the nomination for five years for Pittsburgh’s Best Jazz/Blues Guitarist for the Stroh’s/In Pittsburgh Music Awards.
He has also captured the 1995 award for the Best album for his CD Pieces, best vocalist and best band. Tony’s

Transfer, Larry Carlton, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Jeff Beck, Carlos Santana
,Ted Nugent ,Jimmy Thackery , Richard Elliot , Brian Simpson , Rick Braun , Peabo

Washington DC’s Blues Alley. While in DC. he and the group performed on BET
and the Jazz on BET network television show that is broadcast nationwide. Tony’s
aspiration is to perform music all over the world and to share his enthusiasm for music
with people everywhere. Some people have already picked up his enthusiasm and here
is what they had to say: The Gavin Report, (an international music trade publication)
says,”One of our favorite undiscovered talents”.
8th Street Rox
8th Street Rox has been rocking Pittsburgh since 1981 when
Mike Filosemi formed the band in his hometown in Pitcairn, PA.
The name came simply enough - Mike was visiting a local tavern
on 8th Street in Pitcairn, drinking Rolling Rock with the guys and
trying to come up with a name....the rest is history! 8th Street Rox
has played just about every bar and club within an hour or so of
Pittsburgh, as well as all of the major local festivals. The band has played steady, working almost every weekend since
the early 80’s. The group’s incredible staying power is a testament to the band’s great sound, energy, and enthusiasm.
Five of the band’s 6 members have been in the band since 1988! Two have been in the band since 1982! Drummer
Allen Muckle is the “new” guy with only 5 years under his belt. 8th Street plays a great mix of originals and covers
from such artists as John Hiatt, Roomful of Blues, the Jukes, and Springsteen. The band released its only CD to date
in 1999, “Sittin1 Pretty”, containing 14 great 8th Street Rox “classics”. The song “Sittin’ Pretty” was featured on a
Pittsburgh “Best of the Burgh” CD compilation. After 26 years, the band is still rocking strong, heading into the next
25...! Mike Filosemi- Guitar, lead vocals and guitar, Bud Donohue- bass and background vocals, Drew Dauer- piano
and organ, Phil Brontz, sazophone, Scan Esposito- lead guitar and background vocals, and Allen Muckli- drums.

The Jades
“Our classic rock band is called “The Jades” .
Each of the 4 members in The Jades are well seasoned
performers and each have 40+ years experience in
performing with live rock bands. We also have a 5th
member who is the full time sound technician. The
Jades perform upbeat rock and roll (all danceable)
cover music from the 70’s and 80’s as well as some
original tunes. We average 50-60 dates per year. The
Jades have recently performed at 7 Springs Winterfest
, 7 Springs Brewski Festival , Pgh Hardrock Cafe, The Pgh Rib Festival , Wheeling Island Casino in additional to
performing at weekly club dates. On 4-15-13 The Jades were voted #1 Classic Rock Band in The Valley by WDVE
radio station which is the main rock station to listen to in Pgh, Pa.
The Stickers
The Stickers from Pennsylvania are three brothers and their love and
passion for music. This unique combination generates a tight dynamic sound
and high energy shows. The guys are Known for their engaging and fun,
down-to-earth personalities. The Stickers captivate crowds of all ages. The
band members are accomplished musicians and song writers who are on their
way to leaving a lasting impression in Country Music. Joe is the youngest of the
Wodarek brothers and lead singer for THE STICKERS. He has studied several
instruments before finding his comfort zone as the Lead Singer for The Stickers.
Joe has been a radio personality and enjoys recording, writing, and producing in
his own multi-track studio. Jimmy Wodarek is the oldest and wisest brother of the Wodarek boys. Jimmy plays drums
for The Stickers. “Since I was a kid there were three things I loved- drums, art and ice hockey. As we got older, music
was something my brothers and I all had in common, so that’s how we started spending all of our time together. Years
later... here we are, still playing and still loving it. Thanks for being a part of it!” Jim also does all of the art and design
work for The Stickers. JOHN WODAREK is the middle brother of the Wodarek clan. John plays bass and sings
backing vocals for THE STICKERS. “Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up and
playing music with my brothers in the basement with our parents encouragement was the best musical training I could
ever have had. It built my passion for music and harbored my desire to learn about the business.” John is involved in
all aspects of the The Stickers. His contributions are the foundation of the band on and off the stage.
Kashmir
Kashmir, the nation’s #1 Led Zeppelin tribute show, it is the
most authentic representation of Led Zeppelin on the modern
national touring scene. Each of the 4 band members assumes
their individual role with pinpoint accuracy. Kashmir possesses
the live stage show, sound, and likeness to bring audiences and
fans back to the days when the mighty Led Zeppelin ruled the
musical landscape. With the playlist of every classic rock station
and the most identifiable voice in rock history, Kashmir’s show features Page’s iconic double-neck guitar, Bonham’s

Steve Hawk
“Steve Hawk is taking his experience as the front man, singer/song-writer of Pittsburgh’s band, Forgotten
Nobody (2005-2008), to his own level. With the success of Forgotten Nobody on local Pittsburgh Radio and
myspace.com, when FN went on hiatus after 2008, Hawk picked up the pieces of a life without singing and
playing original Rock & Roll. He’s now doing so in a solo Do or Die fashion!
Keeping personally sacred songs and experiences in his back pocket for many years, Hawk is now emptying
the lint, breaking out solo, acoustic, raw, and real. Stricken with the blues, laced with punk, and feeling
the hangover of old rock & roll, Steve has been out in the Southwestern Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio
music scenes for 3 years, enjoying the solo acoustic rock & roll lifestyle. Steve Hawk is now enjoying new
fans, relishing old- icing the bruises of the past, dusting off his leather jacket and getting ready to bring the
swagger and energy of what one man with one guitar can bring. Just like the old days.”
Adelaida in Autumn
Adelaide in Autumn is an Alternative Indie
Rock troop from Greensburg, PA. Formed in
the parking lot of St. Vincent College in the fall
of 2009, Adelaide in Autumn started as a duo
acoustic act that hit the bar scene in Greensburg
and surrounding Westmoreland County. Following
several good shows and a gig at Hard Rock Café
opening for Briton acoustic act, Lee MacDougall,
Adelaide in Autumn added a third member
to finish the line-up. Dave (Percussion), Nick
(Vocals, Guitar) and Ryan (Guitar, Vocals, Bass)
have played together since that show in May 2011.
Their sound is unique but grounded in alternative
rock with hints of punk, blues, metal and indie
showing themselves in their many original songs.
Adelaide in Autumn combines classic guitar work
with a serious style to create distinctive songs and
an overall exciting and intriguing live experience.
Essential Machine
Essential Machine is a folk-pop band from the city
of bridges, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Originally
from the swamps of Florida and falling in and out of
rock bands, RJ Dietrich rediscovered his passion for
harmony after meeting his wife Karen, a Pennsylvania
native with a knack for percussion. This serendipitous
coupling led them on a journey back to Karen’s
homeland where they have since honed a unique blend
of boy/girl harmonies and grown into their current
lineup including their son RobyJ and fellow friend
and musician Matthew Kilroy. RJ’s background in
audio production evolved from 4-track recordings in
his childhood bedroom to engineering and producing
the band’s three EPs in his project studio. In July
2014, Essential Machine played a sold out show with
Kopecky Family Band. Pittsburgh Music Report
reviewed their performance as an “up-tempo set that
had the crowd dancing and singing along.”

The Wallenda Family
On these pages the Wallenda family presents many aspects of circus history,
professional high wire thrills, skywalks, entertainment and the individuals
involved who built these traditions. You will meet all the members of The
World Famous Wallenda Troupe performing against the backdrop of these
traditions. The patriarch, Karl Wallenda, and his wife of more than forty years, Helen Wallenda, brought the original
troupe to the Ringling Brothers Circus. Older brother Herman Wallenda, and family friend Joe Geiger, toured with the
act for many years. The foursome increased in size eventually creating the famed seven, and
once an eight-person pyramid. Karl established the Wallenda dynasty with his two daughters,
Jenny Wallenda, and Carla Wallenda. Each generation added to the traditions. Karl’s grandchildren from his first wife, Martha Henderson, Tino Wallenda-Zoppe, Delilah Wallenda
Troffer, and Tammy Wallenda, children of Jenny, formed their own troupes. Carla, Helen’s
daughter, helped train her children Rick Wallenda, Rietta Wallenda, Mario Wallenda, and Valerie
Wallenda. They remained with the original troupe, The Great Wallendas, and continued after the
death of their grandfather.
Now another generation follows these same traditions, Nicholas Troffer dba Nik Wallenda,
recently walking over Niagara, and The Little Colorado River Gorge, near the Grand Canyon,
his sister Lijana, and cousins, Alex Wallenda, sisters Aurelia, Alida, and Andrea, still tour under
their respective names, the Flying Wallendas, the Fabulous Wallendas, or use of many other
substitute adjectives. Lyric Wallenda Aristov, with her husband, Simon, present Cirque Vertigo.
Rick Wallenda still heads the families’ original enterprise—Wallenda Enterprises—exceeding
the limits of tradition as The World Famous Wallendas. Karl learned highwire on a steel cable,
rather than the older tightrope. All Wallenda troupes continue to look to new technology making
highwire safer, better, and more thrilling.
Scottdale Area Chamber of Commerce
On August 1, 2001, the Scottdale Area Chamber of Commerce was established to revitalize Scottdale and create events
to attract people to the downtown. The membership consists of businesses and individuals from Scottdale, Everson,
Ruffsdale and Alverton.Members have made a palpable impact on Scottdale. The first project was to replace the old,
plain light poles in the downtown area with decorative ones. Members raised all the money for 15 light poles, which
were installed in 2005. The Chamber also established a welcome walkway between the main parking lot and downtown
businesses. The group had a cement walkway, surrounded by landscaping, installed, along with a handmade wroughtiron decorative archway. The organization has also focused on events to attract people to the downtown by establishing
several regular events – the Easter Egg Hunt, Lunch in the Park, community yard sale, sidewalk sales, Small Business
Saturday, 12 Days of Giveaways, Winter Light Celebration and a car cruise. The Chamber also sponsors the Scottie
Scholar Program. Throughout the year, nine seniors- two of whom are Central Westmoreland Career and Technology
Center students – are chosen by the school district. The students are honored with a lunch with a representative from
the sponsoring business. They each receive a $200 gift card on Senior Day. The organization also distributes a seasonal
newsletter to inform the members and the community about events and other projects. The publication is sent to
members and community churches. In April, during the membership drive the organization holds a breakfast for current
and prospective members. The Chamber meets at noon on the third Tuesday of every month in the Scottdale Library.
Phone calls are managed by the Scottdale Community Civic and Industrial Association. For information, call 724 8873611 or visit the Scottdale Area Chamber of Commerce website at www.scottdale.com or email scottdalechamber@

Scottdale Public Library
One hundred- four years ago, a visit to the Scottdale Library would have been vastly
different from a visit today to 106 Spring Street. I can say with complete assurance,
you could have dropped a pin and heard the tiny tap against the wooden floor of the old
Scottdale High School where our town’s first public library resided. You may have chatted
with the librarian and asked if Theodore Roosevelt’s new book on African Game Hunting
had arrived or seen the latest Beatrix Potter adventure, The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse, resting on the shelves. Popular authors, Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle, Jack London and H.G. Wells all would have graced the shelves. You could have pulled up a chair to study
or read but you certainly would not have asked to use a computer!
Many things have changed in the history of the Scottdale Public Library. Our address has changed a few times starting at the high
school and then to Pittsburgh Street where we stayed for many years, first on the second floor of the Eicher Building.
Here, you would most assuredly have been hushed as you climbed the stairs, the creaks announcing your arrival. Had you
whispered a request to a friend to meet at the nut shop, you may have been asked to leave or the librarian may even have called
your mother to report your antics!
Our next move was across the street to the Brennan Building at 231 Pittsburgh Street.
Librarian Joanne Guesman made sure a much needed expansion was completed and changed the address to 235 Pittsburgh Street.
Finally, with the support of the entire community, and under the leadership of Board President
Judith Ermine and Library Director Patricia Miller, funds were raised to build our beautiful,
permanent home at 106 Spring Street. Grants from the R.K. Mellon, The Allegheny Foundation,
Scottdale Bank and Trust as well as business and individual donations and fundraisers all
contributed to receiving a 500,000.00 Keystone Grant that enabled the building of a mortgage
free building. The Library won the prestigious Keystone Award in 2013 for best use of Keystone
Funds and The Smart Growth Award in 2007 and 2011. There were many individuals who
contributed of their time and effort beyond the norm. To those whose efforts we will never
forget, the community is a better place because of the efforts you put forth.
In August of 2008, the doors of the new library designed by architect, Jim Gayton, were opened to the public. Since that time a
Reading Garden has been added for the enjoyment of all.
Many things have changed through the years but some have remained steadfast. Scottdale loves and supports its library. We hear
every day that the people of Scottdale, Everson, Upper Tyrone and East Huntingdon find their community a better place to live
because of the library. There is always a welcoming smile, a newspaper or magazine to browse, someone to help or guide you
with your reading and information needs and free materials for the whole family to enjoy. Yes, you will now find a computer lab,
Wi-Fi access, free access to e-books, adult reading programs, movie days, audio books, card classes, teen programs and a teen
room for homework, board games or just a quiet space, writing clubs, art clubs, service
clubs, a community room, a garden with tables to spend a summer afternoon and best
of all, a children’s program led by Rhonda Allison. Thanks to our friends at Armstrong
Cable, children can watch Miss Rhonda over and over from home on the local Armstrong
Channel. All that has changed but our pledge to you is that the fundamentals will never
change. Our board of trustees, Dr. David Bigley, Tom Ermine, Barry Whoric, Ruth Stoner,
Clyde Stoner, Tinky Nist and Carole Hunker along with our library Director, Patricia
Miller, and Children’s Director Rhonda Allison are dedicated to making sure the quality
of library service is always our top priority. Remember, membership is free, computer use
is free, programs are free, e-books are free. If you don’t have a card, stop in and visit. Our
staff is happy to assist you!

Jacobs Creek Watershed Association
Our roots run deep in Scottdale
Just like the roots of the vibrant flowers JCWA has planted in the Gazebo rain gardens, our group’s roots are firmly planted in
Scottdale Borough. In fact, for nearly half a century JCWA has called Scottdale its home and partnered with the Borough to improve the Borough’senvironment as well as the health of Jacobs Creek, which flows along the southeastern border of Scottdale.
The seeds for JCWA were first planted in the 1960s when severe flooding in Scottdale motivated a group of hard-working folks to
create JCWA, whose purpose was to find a way to endthe flooding. JCWA’s founders accomplished this by partnering with local
and federal agencies to undertake a massive flood control project that created Acme, Bridgeport and Greenlick Dams. These three
dams still control flood waters today, but are also used for boating, fishing, birding and hiking. It’s likely that the many people
who use these dams for recreation don’t realize their extreme importance in controlling floodwaters or the role that JCWA played
in creating them.
After accomplishing its flood control mission, JCWA went dormant for several decades. In 1999 a young and energetic Westmoreland Conservation District specialist, Mike Barrick, re-formedJCWA totackle the current watershed issues of urban storm water,
erosion, agricultural runoff and mine drainage. Mike, who had also worked for Scottdale Borough, based the group in Scottdaleand JCWA has not stopped conquering problems that affect the watershed and in particular, Scottdale Borough. JCWA has completed several projects in Scottdale to control urban storm water and has several more planned. The green infrastructure measures
you see today, such as porous pavement, rain gardens, bio-swales, porous crosswalks and curb bump-outs reduce surging rainwater
flows that erode and degrade Jacobs Creek. These measures at the Scottdale Library Reading Garden and the Gazebo Parklet area are just the beginning, though, as additional beautiful and functional measures are well on their way to completion along Pittsburgh Street,
Spring Street, O’Neil Alley and Graft Alley.
JCWA’s past and present is intricately tied to Scottdale Borough, and we hope our future is
filled with many more Scottdale-JCWA partnerships that will continue to improve the environment for us all. Please visit www.jacobscreekwatershed.org or call us at 724-887-8220,
ext. 3 to learn more about JCWA’s projects, events and education efforts.

Scottdale celebrates milestone anniversaries for 2014.
Scottdale celebrates 140 years; incorporated February 5, 1874. Our first
settlers arrived in the 1770’s and called this area Fountain Mills. In 1872
the Pa Railroad added a branch line to Fountain Mills. In 1874 local officials named the town Scottdale in honor of Thomas Alexander Scott;
president of the Pennsylvania Railroad and Assistant Secretary of War
during the Civil War.
The independent Observer celebrates 135 years, starting in 1879.
John R. Bryne of Everson was the Editor and publisher. The early
days of publication were devoted to local news and became a champion to the cause of organized labor for the miners and coke workers. In 1926 the Scottdale Independent
and the Scottdale Observer consolidated
and became the Independent Observer.
Scottdale celebrated our 100th anniversary in 1974. The Heritage Festival started; bringing awareness to our rich Industrial and cultural heritage. The festivities
included parades, entertainment, history tours, food and craft booths. The events
were focused on the park area at the corner of Pittsburgh and Spring Streets. That
corner has played a major role in Scottdale’s history of community gathering and
entertainment. During the 1880’s the Baptist Church was constructed on that site
and held services until June of 1907 when a larger church was built on Chestnut
Street. The former Church building continued to serve the community as the
“Arcade” Theater circa 1908. The Arcade was the “B” movie house where many
of the cowboy, horror and lower budget movies were shown. In the early 1940’s the town was a buzz when
Lash LaRue appeared at the Arcade. The Theater closed in the mid 1950’s and gave way for retail stores.
The 1970 mall project razed the retail buildings and the corner of Pittsburgh and Spring became a green
space, a place for the community to gather again. The Gazebo was dedicated October 22, 1978, and has remained the hub for community concerts, events and Festivals. Over the years the Heritage Festival became
known as the Fall Festival. Happy 40th anniversary to the Fall Festival, thank you for keeping the tradition
of entertainment and time for the community to gather and celebrate on this historic corner.

Peggy Thomas
Peggy has been with the
festival since 2003. She
started with the festival
helping Charlie with the
race. When she moved
to Scottdale, charlie aked
her to join the committe.
Peggy accepted the offer
with no hesitation. She
continues to be involved
because of the lasting
friendships that have
evolved over the years
with the Committee members and with several of the
vendors. Also because of the sheer joy of seeing all of
the committees hard work paying off and watching our
guests enjoy themselves for three days.
Megan Newcomer
RickThomas
Perry Spires
With the community I grew up in and
around, all the hours of work and endless
meetings are all made worth while
three days in September. When we (the
committee) are able to look around and
see the attendance at the festival, it is
instant gratification of a job well done.
I first volunteered to assist the previous
parade chairperson. I was organizing a
group of units for the parade and became
hooked of the performance of parade
assembly. A few years later I became the
parade chairperson and grew to love the
opportunities to get to know area bussiness and groups who participate
in the parade. As the Scottdale Fall Festival continues to evolve and
grow I enjoy being a voice for the community festival. This Festival is a
great way to welcome fall and all its beauty.
Megan got involved with the
festival by Peggy as the children’s area chairperson in 2010.
She continues to volunteer
for the Fall Festival because
she loves seeing the joy and
excitement of the faces of the
children when they experience
the fun at the festival. She tries
to provide as many fun and free
activities as possible each year.
The performers in the children’s
area never disappoint.
Rick joined the festival in 2000.
After returning to the area
from living in Pittsburgh, Rick
wanted to get involved with a
community event. The first year
he worked for the festival Rick
did whatever any of the committee members asked him to do.
He continues to have the same
passion for the festival today
as he did all those years ago.
Rick has brought many different
bands and entertainment to the
area. His idea of bringing entertainment to Loucks Park during the festival has provided more
free entertainment for the community to enjoy. One of the
most notable acts has been the Wallendas, which will return
this year to help celebrate the festivals 40th anniversary.
Roger Adams
Charlie Ellis
Charlie started with the festival
in 1998. Charlie Started by
presenting an idea to the
committee for a race. The
committee liked the idea
and made him the first race
chairperson. Seventeen years
later the race is one of the major
events helo at the festival.
Charlie continues to help the
festival because he wants to help
make a great Scottdale event
happen.
Thomas Szczygiel
Thomas Joined the festival in
2006, as a senator in high school
looking to get involved with the
community. He would go on
that year to help the committee
with any activity needed. That
following year the committee
asked Thomas to fill the program
chairmen position. Eight programs
later, Thomas is still working hard
to make each program unique and
special. He has created programs
that express the community of
Scottdale and will act as a time
line to see what was happing in the town during that year.
Thomas continues to be involved with the festival for the community and hopes to see more young participants help with this
great community event in the years to come.
Roger joined the festival this year, having always been impressed with the operation that the festival committee performs. Working the security position Roger has worked alongside some of the committee members. However, he is looking forward to working
with more of the committee and becoming more involved with the operations. He is willing to lend a helping hand to work directly
with other committee members to help make another successful year.
Scottdale Fall Festival Page 24
Greg King
Greg joined the festival in 2008. He started by selling the 50/50 tickets at the car show and every year became more
and more involved with the car show. Greg continues to help with the festival because of the community spirit. He
said that the event provided the opportunity to see people he would not get to see normally. Every year the event is like
a big reunion and everyone is having a good time. Greg is looking forward to the 40th anniversary and hoping this will
be the biggest year yet!
Keith Medley
Keith joined the festival in 2013. Last year the Scottdale Fall Festival posted on their Facebook page that they were
looking for a new food booth chairman. He responded to the post within minutes and came to the meeting that night
to meet the committee. Keith was appointed the food booth chairman position and did a great job running the booth.
Keith is looking forward to his second festival.
