My life has been one of the many lives that this movement has revolutionized! ROTARACT! It's that one organisation which has the power to transform people's lives. My life has been one of the many lives that this movement has revolutionized! I joined Rotaract in July 2014 , soon I was appointed as the Director Sports for the rotaract year of 2014-15. Being a rotaractor of RC Ruia , it dawned on me that this is the place where you can dream and not just halt there, here dreams see the daylight of reality. I had a dream, a herculean task to accomplish. But dreaming is not where you stop. The journey of chasing your dreams is way more worthy than that of accomplishing it. Chasing dreams made me believe in pushing boundaries of the accepted. A leader , a people's person waded her out. After 7 months of Rotaraction time however had come then, to step up to the challenge, come out of the shadows and take the gauntlet of leadership. It was time to take up the Presidentship of RC Ruia. RC Ruia has always been a venerable club. Each venture of RC Ruia has set an impossible standard of impeccability and panache. I believe, with my team along we are going to take RC Ruia further on the pedestal of success and development in the year 2015-16. A wise man once told me " Do not go where the path may lead ; make your own path as you ho along". And something about it has What the President has to say stayed with me since then. I believe in challenges. I believe in 'Thinking Big' .I believe in redefining the expectations of the club. I believe in Scaling Galaxies. I , the 4th President of The Rotaract Club of Ramnarain Ruia College urge you all to be a part of and support this revolution, for a revolution this shall indeed be! Thank you and Regards, Rtr. Simran Sumbre President 2015-16 The Rotaract Club of Ramnarain Ruia College. Editors’ desk Warm Rotaract Greetings, With great responsibilities arise great expectations- Yes, I'm ecstatic and overjoyed but at the same time, terrified and completely 'freaked out'. 'Would things be alright? What if we cannot live upto the name of this bulletin THE ONLIEST meaning "the only one- nothing to replicate it in any way"? How would the production process go? Would we be able to accomplish this, no less than a feat, and come out triumphantly?'- Phew! It was endless; it has been always. But then, all that begins well ends well, for sure. In the same way, after meticulous and arduous labour borne by Rtr. Anushka Karmakar that goes into the making of this bulletin, I, alongside my entire team of Editorial, feel extremely proud in presenting 'The Onliest', with #PerksofbeinganIndian as the theme of this month? Want to know more? Then what are you waiting for? Flip through the pages! -Rtr. Alpona Dutta Editor 2015-16, RC RUIA. Editors’ desk "The Onliest". Wondering what it means? It basically means one of a kind and unique. Namaste. Here I am, presenting before you, RC Ruia's ebulletin "The Onliest"- Issue 2. This month we decided to be a little different. This issue's theme is " The Perks of Being an Indian". Instead of telling stories of our history, freedom struggle, etc we decided to tell the story of what sets Indians apart from the rest of the world. Quirky facts, mind-boggling ways of life and much more! Can you relate to any? Hope y'all enjoy this magazine. Rtr. Anagha Menon, Editor 2015-2016. What is RC RUIA? Want to know more? THEN JOIN RC RUIA! The Theme #Perksofbeinganindian There are some things which one will find nowhere else but in this land that we call India 1. The first one, Maa ka pyaarIndians often feel more attracted to foreign cultures. But as it's said no matter where you go, you realise your home is the best, similarly, our nation, our motherland, INDIA IS THE BEST! First and foremost thing comes is "MAA KE HAATH KA KHANA". That tasty, scrumptious, relishing food that an Indian mother prepares putting in so much efforts CAN NOT be found anywhere in the world. 'India ki kuch baat hi alag hai'-Indian mothers go to extremes when it comes to pampering their 'beta/beti'. But but, there again, you get firings too when the pampering becomes a bit too much. But the bottomline- if you are not India, you will definitely miss the "Maa ka pyaar" 2.Being a Festival animalWith the diversity of India comes the huge number of festivals India celebrate. Whether its Holi, Diwali, Eid, Onam, Pongal, Makar Sakranti, Rakhi, a festival is never far from your calendars reach .You will experience variety of festivals of various religions. Don't be stunned if you find a BHAIJAAN kneeling in front of Bappa, or a Brother praying in the gurdwara. 3. Masters in driving- #Ohyeah No pun intended, but after driving in the worst case scenarios presented by Indian roads and traffic situations, we are just so adept at driving that we can easily pass the most complex tests of driving without fret. While an American can never even imagine to drive in India , we can drive anywhere is the world as it cannot get worse, can it ? You will surely get the degree of masters in driving! The Theme 4. The Ubiquitous Indian CommunityWe can go to any damn country in the world, and be pretty sure to find an Indian community, Indian roommates and Indian restaurants. The Indian community is just everywhere on the planet . 5. Strong memory 7. Apni bhasha- #Elephant's memoryThough you have played many memory games, no one can beat an Indian's memory. We have actually become pro by remembering our relations with our far far cousins. We have the imense power to remember each n every relative with their name Cutting chai...double-shouble...using 'ki' instead of 'that' or simply, Hinglish- where will you ever find such an amalgamation of languages? We've our own etymologies, our own lingual, 'cause after all, we rock! As a coin has two sides, Indians, no matter how efficient they're, also have some negative aspects. But as my mother says (being the obedient child)rather than looking at a person's demerits, we should acknowledge their virtues 6. Huge Collection of clothesWe can dress up western, Indian , even more traditional village style, Lungi style , Jaipur style. Just so many choices for us that we are overwhelmed with it . So much variety of clothes are found, man! ‘As a coin has two sides, Indians, no matter how efficient they're, also have some negative aspects. But as my mother says (being the obedient child)rather than looking at a person's demerits, we should acknowledge their virtues ’ -Rtr. Saloni Mhapskar - Rtr. The Rainbow Is White Once upon a time lived a fat boy. They called him 'Flabulous'. The lady owning the farm nicknamed her goats 'The Nazis' The fragment of letter said 'Even though love you must; love you shouldn't." The grocery owner was a pretty old man. He never smiled. She sodomized her nephew. Said she liked it better small: Twinky-sized. The child sleepwalked. It sometimes peed en route. She scratched idly at the nape of her neck where an ant had bitten her. Ordinary stories. I see them happen around me. To me. All the time. But some of these stories are cut short and in their brevity they become beautiful. Death, in my eyes, is not a tragedy. Death is a glorifier. The most rusted life is gilded to glory by death. It retells ordinary stories in a fascinating way. Once upon a time lived a fat boy. They called him flabulous. Initially it hurt him. Later, he learned on social media that he should wear himself(flab and all) proudly and that's what he did. He stopped trying to lose weight by not eating. He smiled all the time and even participated in Inspirational Oration for the likes of him. A few years later, he died of cardiac arrest. Some whispered "He was only 21" The others remarked how SMALL he looked in death. "He died but he will continue to live in how he inspired us", a fellow flabulous concluded in his eulogy. The lady owning the farm nicknamed her goats 'The Nazis'. She bred them and slaughtered them into a variety of mince pies and kebabs. They were all she had for all of her meals. What was the goats' fault? They were BLOGGER OF THE MONTH . slaughterable. Just as once she and those who shared her blood had been. The fragment of letter said 'Even though love you must; love you shouldn't." A sixteen year old found it in her mother's dresser. "Look what happened to me", the war-widow mumbled. The grocery owner was a pretty old man. He never smiled. Everyone pretty much hated him. It turns out, he was suffering from a rare condition called "Moebius Syndrome" as explained by his doctor friend. Most people had no idea what that even meant but they bought it and bawled their eyes out for the sweetest man ever to have had graced their petty lives. She sodomized her nephew. Said she liked it better small: twinky-sized. The shrink shrunk back into his chair in ill-disguised horror. It had hurt her, she continued, when a man had penetrated her with a bigger one. Had said she was so small, and he was sorry but he liked it better tight. As the session ended, she was run over by a car. Accident or not? The Newspaper Headlines read. No one really, ever found out. The child sleepwalked. It sometimes peed en route. It's older sibling sleepwalked too; it ran in their family. Once the older sibling, slipped over the younger sibling's pee and died of intra-cranial hemorrhage. The elder one used to paint beautiful...doodles. "World lost a possible Picasso", the younger one sobbed as he half-remembered the unfortunate incident on his Eightieth Birthday. This is me. I scratched idly at the nape of my neck where an ant had bitten me. I was reading "The Madman" then, and I happened to come across this story. Three ants met on the nose of a man who was lying asleep in the sun. And after they had saluted one another, each according to the custom of his tribe, they stood there conversing. BLOGGER OF THE MONTH The first and said, "These hills and plains are the most barren I have . known. I have searched all day for a grain of some sort, and there is none to be found." Said the second ant, "I too have found nothing, though I have visited every nook and glade. This is, I believe, what my people call the soft, moving land where nothing grows." Then the third ant raised his head and said, "My friends, we are standing now on the nose of the Supreme Ant, the mighty and infinite Ant, whose body is so great that we cannot see it, whose shadow is so vast that we cannot trace it, whose voice is so loud that we cannot hear it; and He is omnipresent." When the third ant spoke thus the other ants looked at each other and laughed. At that moment the man moved and in his sleep raised his hand and scratched his nose, and the three ants were crushed. I buried the sorry corpse of the tiny ant in my best matchbox and vowed never to scratch again without checking for an ant. I did not want to be the god who kills. When I was in kindergarten we were given "Memorize the color names" assignment. The next day, Mrs.Tribbiani asked me what my favorite color was. I answered 'rainbow'. "But 'Rainbow' is not a color, Jo", she squeaked in her top squeaky voice. But now I think it is. The rainbow is white. -Aishwarya Ghonge Write-ups of winners from 'Stars behind the clouds' Journalism often considered as epitome of free speech and rightly so because of the stories it covers is under a threat with the on going brutal assaults aimed at few journalists , Precisely speaking honest journalists are as rare as a four leaf clover but sadly this system is supressing them to the fullest. In the world of crony capitalism, Nepotism, Corruption and various other henious crime we bank on journalists to reveal the truth but more often than not they are found boot licking the same criminals/politicians and hence get paid to showcase false news, pretty much sums up my previous statement "Honest journalists are as rare as four leaf clover" , Might sound like insurgency but attacks on journalist is a serious issue ! Jagendra Singh a small time honest journalist who didn't fall to the excessive greed of money and fame worked secretly to reveal the truth to the masses was burnt alive by few policemen . This catastrophic and qualm incident took place in UP ,Its ridiculous to see journalists being assaulted for portraying the truth to the masses . A repugnant incident pretty hard to comprehend as he was incarcerated brutally Jagendra Singh, a social media journalist, was burned alive by Uttar Pradesh Police for making a facebook post against Ram Murti Verma, a state minister in Uttar Pradesh and a powerful Samajwadi Party politician in Shahjahanpur. On 30th May, Jagendra Singh posted a series of facebook post accusing Ram Murti Vera of gangraping a nursery worker with his henchmen and forcibly grabbing large tracts of land. He also accused him of high-level corruption. The following day police raided his house and burnt him alive in front of his son. It's amusing to see Indian media showing no remorse for this incident while international media has demanded a serious investigation regarding this case, Such a doomsday for honest journalism, This 15th August I would like to reminisce his noble deeds he did for nation and presented a beautiful example of dope journalism ! -Siddhesh Ambure Write-ups of winners from 'Stars behind the clouds' Good Day! It is with great pride and honor that I introduce to you guys Ms. Rowena Gadot also known as Maam Weng. A grade school teacher in barangay Rogongon, a hinterland school here in Iligan City. Ma'am Weng is the first ever person who insinuated the construction of septic comfort rooms in Rogongon for the lumads residing there who are called Higaonon, the act of social service started there but it was far from its end, since the place is not a very accessible barangay, Maam Weng started her mission to take every possible outreach programs that she can be involved in, from Circumcission, feeding, slipper giving, livelihood seminars and supporting the Indigenous group to attain all possible avenue to progress their knowledge for the betterment of the community. Every year, Ma'am Weng brings the spirit of Santa Claus from North Pole al the way to Rogongon to let the Higaonon kids experience the typical Western Christmas that we all so grew accustumed to. Complete with gifts, ice cream and the necessary magic to bring the mega watt smiles on the faces of the kids. All these are done in the monday to friday days because during weekends, when she is down in the city area when she should be taking a break, she is organizing activities for the youth organization that she helped organize, doing her best to gather young people and convincing and leading them to be productive citizens of the community. Mariegold Jabla Iligan City YOUR CORNER 1. #BeingDesi We Indians look up to the rest of the world, thinking about how much we lag behind. We envy the other countries for their economy, culture, everything. But here we don't realize that we have much more than them. We have each other. We have the unspoken bonds we share, we have US. Yes, all we Indians are emotional fools. We have feelings behind every thing we do. We have an unseen bond with many, an unspoken relationship with the people out there. An example to this is our daily modes of traveling buses and trains. It's not new to anyone of us that to make 'train' or 'bus' friends. And more than that... It's not surprising that these friends of ours do include Aunties and little school going children. Saving up a seat for each other, sharing a snack during the journey, having a little gossip, a laugh over something mild..... #perks of being an Indian. It's only in India do you get to befriend a bus conductor. Where the bus driver will try stopping the bus at the curb before the stop just so that you can get down and won't have to walk all the way back. Where the everyday Aunties get hysterical over a single cough or sneeze from you. It's just so... Indian. It's just so us. -Rtr. Rutvika Kondulkar FYJC ARTS YOUR CORNER 2. Sign Of These English Phrases Except For In India! We Indians carry pride in whatever we do. Then be it doing some extraordinary activities or innovating some good English phrases. We have invented such a great deal of English terminology which is nowhere to be found in official dictionary. But anyways, language is one such thing which keeps evolving and can be twisted and shaped in the way we want it to be. We use these English phrases in our daily life and they in themselves have become our unique identity as they are used nowhere in the rest of the world. An overview of some of these phrases: • Like That Only/ Excessive Use Of Only: We will use only because we like only as it adds an extra tinge of completion to the sentence. Ask why? Like that only! We use only in the end, in the middle or even in the beginning of the sentence just to give it some sense, while the reality is that it doesn`t make much sense! But, we are like that only, any problem? • What is your good name? Legendary wordsmith, the great Shakespeare said- What is in a name? Really, why any name is supposed to have any adjective? How can anyone`s name be bad? As if people keep their real name under wraps and use their pseudonyms! In Hindi, we say ‘Apka shubh naam kya hai?’ It has been plainly translated into what is your good name. It can even be simply asked as, ‘what is your name?’ • Passing out of the school/college You use the same phrase somewhere else in the world; and you will be taken to the doctor because there it means getting unconscious. But in India, students are generally lauded when they say this. In real terms, it is graduation or convocation, but is converted into ‘passing out of any educational institution’. Okay, we understand you might pass out after writing laborious exams and finally ‘passing out’! • Out of station This is the commonest mistake we make when others ask us, “Where are you?” or when we want to give some nice excuse. But how can you be outside or inside any station? The actual term is out of town. Doesn`t it connect with Harry Potter`s King`s cross station where you had to enter inside to reach till platform 9 ¾? But this isn`t the magical word, so better keep in mind to use the correct word next time! YOUR CORNER • All about sleep Most of us say, ‘Ok, bye! Sleep is coming.’ Where had it gone to come again? We are not playing any personification game here to transform sleep into a living being. • Mother/father/god promise Youngsters mostly use it to slip out of any troublesome situation. If you don`t take it seriously, you are sure to die. It might be the effect of traditionalism in India. But let me remind, even the words like ‘swear’ exist in this world! • Do the needful It isn`t used anymore, people stopped using it around the time British left India. It is simply said to ask the person to do a particular task. But using it today indicates that you are an ancient person. So why take the risk? Just avoid using it! • Relations Phrases like real sister/brother are used to enquire about blood relationships. Also, nothing like cousin brother and cousin sister prevails; you can just call them cousins. This is our Grammar book created with full liberty. Hope this gets replaced with a corrected version soon! Don`t know how much time will it take, because at the end of the day, we are like that only! - Rtr. Rutuja Bhosle SYJC ARTS YOUR CORNER 3. MY IDEAS OF BEING HUMAN..!! We all are people who think about helping out someone or rather helping out to do something for the society in general. In a busy and fast city like Mumbai we all have our own views and steps for doing something for improving the society or the city as a whole. We all have our own discussions and debates about the different basic issues that go on around the city and have our own views and solutions to it. Forget about the discussions and debates about the city, we have our own views and solutions about the problems going on in our own neighborhood. But these problems and solutions only stop to discussions and debates. We never take the efforts or never have the time and patience to the efforts to do something for the same. What basically is the meaning of being human? According to me, the basic meaning of being human in a busy life is at least helping or caring to do something good for the society and city as a whole. Some months ago there were great debates, discussions and articles in different news channels and newspapers about the brand “BEING HUMAN” by the famous actor Salman Khan which actually became so very famous that there are t-shirts, bags, badges, etc publicizing about the brand. Some people took it in a positive way and there were some who actually opposed for obvious reasons. This brand has now become so famous that there are so many NGO’s under it in different parts of the city. According to me despite whatever he might have done in the past, he has at least helped so many people all around the city in his own way. Yes he might be publicizing his brand and making a lot of money through this but still, his initiative has helped up many people to improve their lives. YOUR CORNER There are so many small ways of being human to people. When we are travelling in buses and trains and if old man/women come in, giving a seat to him/her without seeing whether others get up or no is a way. During the rainy season in a city like Mumbai there is always water logging everywhere because of which the city actually comes to a standstill. Talking about the issue in a group or among your friends and also complaining to the municipality about the same is also a way. If you have had a fight with your friend and after some months you see him/her in depressed mood and you just ask her what is wrong with her, is again a way of being human showing that you at least care about him/her. One of the best examples I have experienced of being human is about “ANNUAL DOG FESTIVAL IN CHINA” called “THE YULIN FESTIVAL”. This festival has been a big revolt for the people in the city and they have taken their own initiatives to stop this festival in a faraway country like China. Posting up pictures, videos, sayings about dogs in many social networking sites has been a great blow to ban the festival. There are many more incidents where we “Busy Mumbaikars” have been humans in our own ways. Some social incidents include- the Delhi and Mumbai rape case, the Peshawar attack and much more. However, there are more millions and billions of other ways of being human to someone, the environment or the society as a whole. So basically, concluding this I would say that just even thinking about the well being of someone or something is the meaning of being human because once you think well about someone or something, obviously you try to do something. Radhika Raghupathy YOUR CORNER 5. Perky Indians India is a country where a burkha clad women dresses up her son as Krishna on Janmashtami. India, where a Muslim girl aces a nationwide quiz on the Bhagwat Gita, India, where the Hindu eats only after sunset on the thirty days of Ramadan. India, where a nationwide holiday is declared on the parsi new year, an infinitesimal minority. India, the land of Ashoka and Akbar. India, the pulsating heartbeat of a million people, for a million reasons. We are Indians. We love adopting other cultures and pushing ours conveniently to the background. We love our natural tan that the firangis have to get the harder way. We love criticizing ourselves but when others do it they become the butt of all our jokes on twitter. We are loud. We love attaining ‘inspiration’ from the Hollywood movies and shows. We seem to hate Bollywood but no other genre can suffice our enthusiasm at DJs. Nothing can beat mutter paneer yet western food outlets make more money anyday. We have innumerable goddesses but if every mother in the country goes berserk if a minute passes after the curfew and the girl’s not home. We are loud. We love blaring the speakers to the maximum on every occasion because we think our gods are deaf. Without reservations we cannot function. Our Indian food organizations are okay with the road side food stalls sprouting from god knows where but restricts tested-in-every-way Belgium chocolates. We have a censor chief who wants to ban words like ‘Bombay’ from mainstream cinema. We have a best-selling authors in a language that is certainly not English are judging dance reality shows. Then we complain about brain drain. (Cue-Applause) Yet, we are Indians. However tempting is catching a flight to countries where the walls of buildings are not paan stained, down somewhere we are proud Indians. Our heart soars every time our batsman sets the ball soaring. We blink back happy tears when our sportsperson wins a medal. We are fighting and we will continue to fight. YOUR CORNER Dear Americans, we cannot talk the way you slang it. Dear Chinese, we cannot eat noodles and rice with two slim sticks. Dear Germany, we don’t know how one day your sportsperson breaks his arm and the next day he wins 10 matches, we have no idea how to do the perfect ballet or the perfect hip hop but what we do know is…we don’t throw our parents in old age houses. We didn’t drop atom bombs on cities destroying humanity. We don’t discriminate between the pigments of your skin. We don’t kill innocent people. We are Indians and the best we do is we never give up. -Priyanka Tibrewal YOUR CORNER 6. #BeingIndian Today, my neighbor bought me a bowl of payasam *_* And that was when I actually realized how lucky was I to be born in an Indian family! Every festival I get to eat some or the other special delicacy. And something more special is that I get gifts too! Though being a Hindu (more proud to be an Indian! ) every festival brings joy and happiness in every house. The whole atmosphere gets lightened up and so do people's faces. The reason behind me liking Indian festivals is that it brings people closer no matter what religion you belong to and another one is FOOD! Going to a wider range. Just once, go to any random house and then you will realize why India has a motto 'Atithi devo bhava' Every guest is a God. This ideology makes me love India even more! Just a second:have you ever been to an Indian wedding. If you haven't PLEASE GO ASAP! And if possible enjoy the prior 5 to 6 days. Because in India marriage is not only about one day it's about that day,it's prior 7 days and henceforth your 7 lives! There's nothing more entertaining than seeing your aunty dancing and then you won't even realize when you reach the stage while dancing. Adding more to the Indian marriage however strong your father is he'll see you instead of the bride and wipe the tears which only you will notice. The best part of the big fat weddings is that you get to enjoy all the 'rasam'sThe traditions which have something more than just being authentic! Something more to the 'hatke' list of being Indian are the Bollywood movies! You could actually miss anything to watch these movies. If you don't believe in happy endings you gotta see a Bollywood movie because we do have a unicorn island with the sweetest endings ever! Finally the biggest thing that makes me happy is that these Indian people. Because wherever you go You won't ever feel alone, there will be people YOUR CORNER who will love you like you belong to them and would never expect anything in return but only love. This event was jointly organized by RC Ruia and RC Jai Hind. This event aimed to promote the softer version of the beastly sport 'Rugby' ,which is often not known to many people . Also, this event aimed at making bonds among members through a sport which is not known to many. Stars Behind Clouds Since it was to grace the Independence Day, the aim was to instill a sense of patriotism in the hearts if people and pay tribute to the unsung heroes, who have gone unnoticed and un-credited while working, through writings. Scavenger Hunt The prime aim was to not only Brand the Club but to also strengthen the bond among the participants and to make them learn to work as a part of the team and not apart. As united we stand , divided we fall !! T Design League FLAG The main aim of the video was to pay a tribute to the National Flag on Independence Day. The video was the a symbol of respect towards the national flag. Through the video we wanted to inculcate the values of national integrity and the feeling of patriotism among the responsible citizens of the nation. This project idea cropped up after our first GBM. We had discussed in the GBM about our official T-Shirt design of the year and there were many who came up with excellent ideas. Thus, announcing a T-Shirt designing competition was the best possible way to give them a platform to showcase their ideas. We were open for both Sketches and Digital Designs, so that no one is left out. It was also decided that the winning design, after final editing by Digital Communication Directors, will be our club's official T-Shirt design. Results were to be declared on 18th August at 8pm. Events Discover Hospitality To provide club rotaractors an insight to the hospitality industry.Discover hospitality is the first session under the auspices of district initiative Rotaract Bagpack,It's an attempt to introduce rotaractors to careers under the emerging hospitality industry. Freeze the Night Freeze the Night, was a photography competition organized especially to celebrate World Photography Day. Further more being an online project and open for all, the other aim of this project was to provide a platform for passionate photographers to showcase their talents. 4th CHARTER DAY RC Ruia celebrated its 4th Charter day. Events THE BURP There are so many foodies, but they couldn't show their talent in it and so burp was an event where people could showcase their talent of eating too! As it was Club Service Initiative, it was meant for club bonding. Mission : Envision 'Mission : Envision' is divided into two phases.Phase 1 of the project aimed at recording audio notes for the Visually Challenged And LD students Of Self Vision Centre (SVC) of Ramnarain Ruia College. In the Phase 1 of the project the Rotaractors of Ramnarain Club of Ruia College recorded the Academic notes for the students which consisted all lessons of all subjects whichever the students asked for and the audios will be stored in The SVC for future use. In this way our Rotaractors decided of contributing towards the education of the Visually Challenged and LD students. Our club believes in providing Quality education to everyone. And to accomplish this our rotaractors give their best. Phase 2 of the project aimed at providing or arranging examination writers for the students of SVC. Just providing notes won't be enough if the students don't get an opportunity to express themselves and perform their best in exams. Arranging writers for these students is of vital importance and the institution as well as students face a lot of problems to accomplish this need and eventually face lot of loses on their academic front. So the rotaractors of RC Ruia took the sole responsibility of Providing writers. Tribute I was very genuinely emotionally attached to the man even though I never followed what he did or anything. When I was 4, my playschool took us to meet him to his house. We spent a good 3 hours speaking with him. This is one of my fondest memories from then. Very hazy, but I remember bits of it. He was telling us this story, and I kept saying we'd heard it. So he picked me up, put me on his lap and said that we hadn't heard it from him so it was alright. He told us the story about the Rabbit and the Turtle and their race and then explained ti us what it meant and what we should learn from it. I sat in his lap the entire time, I also remember him feeding me kaju barfi because I wouldn't stop crying. When we got lunch, I didnt know what a vada was it was the first time I'd seen one and I asked him what it was and he spent a good few minutes explaining to me what they were too. The patience was just. Gorgeous. What a lovely man, really. Yep. Just that. I wasn't very affected by his death or anything. Just I'd absolutely forgotten about this. And all this talk about him brought it all back. So hey, stories right? I have a photo in my room sucking my thumb standing in front of him hahaha! -Rtr. Vaishnavi Sanap Fyjc Arts Tribute Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and the Youth. “I can get the youth to dream. They have fewer biases about the society.” - Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam It was a severe blow to the country last night as the missile man of India; Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam breathed his last while sharing imperial bits of knowledge to the youth of India at IIM Shillong, Assam. The reason of his death being cited as a cardiac arrest has shocked and grieved millions of students across the country and the minds that he inspired. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was the idol of masses of students in India. Teaching being his passion, he left a mark on the 18 million youngsters that he met over the past decade and a half. Motivating and inspiring students to work harder towards the future is what Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam wove his passion of teaching with. Striving to change the attitude of ‘What can I take’ to the opinion of ‘What can I give’ is what the late former president did, working with the present of the country, the power of the country and the spirit of the country: the youth. The main reason why the students of this country were in awe of the exceptional scientist is his approachable personality. A symbol of immense knowledge and great importance, the students would have definitely felt intimidated. But when a former president and a magnificent scientist lets the young minds Tribute ask him anything, imagination and inspiration takes the place of intimidation in their impressionable spirits. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s student, Srijan Pal Singh, the one with whom he co-wrote “Target 3 Billion” was fondly remembering the late professor after he passed away, “You gave me dreams, you showed me dreams need to be impossible, for anything else is a compromise to my own ability. The man is gone, the mission lives on. Long live Kalam.” Probably imparting strength and wisdom to children and students across the country, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam has taught millions of hearts to dream before he passed away. His wish was that after his death no holiday be declared. Following his wishes, no holiday was declared. But the United Nations Organization (U.N.O.) has rightfully declared Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s birthday as World Student’s Day. Working till the end, as a teacher more than as the former president, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam changed infinite souls for the better, being a role model for the masses and moreover, inspiring the youth through decades of his glorious life. ********* Quotes and Interviews taken from: The DNA and The Hindustan Times.
