2009 | Annual Report
We would sit in our son’s room, even though
he was paralyzed and sedated, and read every
guestbook post to him.

Dear Friends,
Every single day, more than 500,000 people worldwide were
connected to a loved one through a free CaringBridge website
in 2009, finding or providing Hope, Healing and
Connection amid a serious health event. We’re proud
of our history of Connecting Families and Friends When
Health Matters Most.
At the same time, however, we realize that our numbers
represent only a small portion of the potential. CaringBridge
is used by only 2 percent of the 10,000 people in the United
States who face premature births, cancer diagnoses or
accidents each day. Staring down seemingly insurmountable
circumstances, families critically need our help to receive
love and strength to persevere.
Highlighted in this report are three families who understand
the difference CaringBridge can make. Jason, Taylor and
Gavin, whose journeys with a heart transplant, leukemia and
a prolonged health condition, respectively, truly demonstrate
why we at CaringBridge believe in the healing power of the
human spirit. We hope you are inspired by their stories of
Hope, Healing and Connection.
These stories give us a glimpse into the connections made
through our service in 2009. We experienced increases
in new sites, new registered users, unique visitors and
journal update e-mail notifications sent. We also established
many partnerships with healthcare sponsors, alliances and
professionals; and nonprofit and faith-based organizations,
which continue to be vital means to introduce people in
need to CaringBridge.
CaringBridge authors and visitors experienced many
enhancements to our service during 2009, including the
launch of CaringBridge 3.0, which includes the ability to
insert photos into journal entries and allows authors
to create sites in Spanish. We also added more network
capacity to ensure CaringBridge will continue to be able to
help more families and handle higher volumes of visitors.
Providing and continually enhancing CaringBridge is made
possible by our generous donors. Unlike many nonprofits, we
receive the majority of our funding from individual donors –
most of whom had a personal experience with CaringBridge
– rather than corporations or foundations. We touched
the lives of over 35 million families in 2009, proving that
individual donors make a big impact. If you were one of the
many donors to support CaringBridge financially as a way to
honor a friend or family member who relied on our service,
thank you.
In 2010, we must – and we will – meet more of the
tremendous need that exists for our service. Individuals and
families should no longer face their health circumstances
alone. Through the introduction of dedicated resources
and tools for the healthcare community, we will strengthen
those important referral relationships. We’re also developing
mobile and social networking applications to help reach
those in need in convenient and cost-effective ways.
Much potential lies ahead in 2010. You can help us reach
our fullest potential by telling others about CaringBridge and
supporting us financially. With your help, more families can
receive the same Hope, Healing and Connection
we’ve provided since our founding. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sona Mehring

i am hope...
Leong Family Finds Hope in Numbers
Many CaringBridge authors interpret the increasing visit counts
on their sites as a sign that people care and are interested in
the latest update. Kate and Ed Leong equate visit tallies to their
family’s site as prayers for healing for their toddler. In those
prayers, they find hope.
The Leong’s now-two-year-old son, Gavin, faced challenges
even before his birth on September 29, 2007. Throughout the
pregnancy, he had enlarged ventricles in his brain and spent the
latter months twisted out of the fetal position. When the doctors
took him via Caesarian section three weeks early, he needed help
breathing. He spent a month in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Less than two months after going home, Gavin returned to the
hospital with the highly contagious respiratory syncytial virus
(RSV), which resembles a moderate to severe cold. After two
weeks of little improvement, he was taken to the Nemours/
Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware,
where he spent another six weeks. Here he was also diagnosed
with botulism.
Ed made the two-hour, round-trip commute to the hospital
each night after work while Kate returned home to Valley Forge,
Pennsylvania, only twice in eight weeks. CaringBridge helped
minimize her isolation and became her lifeline to the outside
world after a Nemours volunteer introduced her to the service
and provided a laptop for posting updates.
The January 26, 2008 journal entry conveys her initial delight:
“I can’t get over this. I decided on a whim to make this little site
late last night and the outpouring of support and good wishes has
been so touching.”
“CaringBridge provided us a
great way to communicate with
friends and family all at the same
time while allowing us to spend
as much time with Gavin during
those difficult periods,” Ed said.
“This benefit was immense
and immediate.”
Gavin came home on a feeding tube and required oxygen at
night. He was diagnosed with reflux, bilateral sensorineural
(hearing) loss and congenital ptosis (drooping of the eye lid). Yet
undiagnosed at that time was cerebral palsy. Kate knew it was
coming, but when the doctor broke the news six days before his
first birthday, it was devastating.
While his condition may seem challenging, Gavin doesn’t notice.
The agreeable toddler receives regular physical, occupational, play,
speech and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and when he progresses
past where anyone predicted, it is cause for hope and celebration.
“Gavin has cheerleaders all over the world. My celebration
becomes so much bigger [sharing it with others],” Kate said.
The Leongs relish every CaringBridge visitor – sometimes as
many as 200 or 300 a day and spanning as far away as Egypt and
Ireland to the neighbor next door.
Kate said, “Each visit means one more prayer or positive thought
for Gavin.” She and Ed credit those prayers and positive thoughts
as the reasons why Gavin no longer needs to wear hearing aids.
A true miracle.
“CaringBridge is integrated into the fabric of our
lives,” Ed said. “My wife relies on CaringBridge to be her voice
to the world, her daily diary, her way of making a mark as one of
Gavin’s champions, and her way of helping and connecting with
other families. I am so thankful and proud of my wife for what
she does for our family and also thankful that CaringBridge
continues to provide her a voice.”
Kate anticipates sharing updates on Gavin, his younger brother,
Brian, and the daughter they’re expecting in September, forever
because it’s therapeutic and connects her with other moms. It
began as a means to help communicate during Gavin’s illness, and
has become the boys’ baby books and a source for day-to-day
conversation and support. She said, “It’s the one thing I do for
myself every day without fail. I can be very selfless all day except
for that one thing.”
Selfish? Hundreds of site visitors every day would disagree as
they, too, find hope and inspiration in following the two toddlers
on which Kate lavishes her love.
CaringBridge provided us a great way to
communicate with friends and family all at the
same time while allowing us to spend as much
time with Gavin during those difficult periods.

Pablos Find Encouragement
for Healing Through CaringBridge
Journaling. It’s a foreign concept to some.
“Journaling was very therapeutic though.”
When Jason Pablo’s social worker at Stanford Hospital urged
him to record his heart transplant journey, he had no idea
where to start.
Jason said,“At first, I didn’t know how I felt about CaringBridge.
Then I read the guestbook entries. The support was a
tremendous lift to my whole entire spirit. I didn’t realize we
knew that many people.” The nurses on his floor did though.
They dubbed him “the party guy” because of his generally
jovial personality and throngs of visitors.
Meanwhile, his wife, Aliw, was overwhelmed by repeatedly
responding to questions about Jason’s health. “It started
getting depressing,” Aliw said. “I told people he was okay so
that I didn’t have to cover the details.”
CaringBridge was a godsend for both of them.
Creating and updating a site was easy for the Pablos as Stanford
has free Wi-Fi and Jason had his laptop there. Aliw forwarded
a link to Jason’s site to family, friends and work colleagues, and
soon people from Europe, the Philippines, Hawaii and across
the continental U.S. were following the “soap opera” of the
35-year-old’s transplant.
Jason’s health journey started in 2000, when he was diagnosed
with cardiomyopathy, a disease that affects the heart’s ability
to pump blood through the body. Progressively, his stamina
and ability to do the activities he loved – basketball, tennis
and playing with his two young children – diminished. He was
in and out of the hospital many times during the next eight
years. Finally in August 2008, he went into the hospital, not to
be released until after his long recovery from his September
5, 2008, heart transplant surgery.
Jason’s CaringBridge site was the
only means for people to receive
updates on his wait for a heart
and the results of surgery. Aliw
and Jason updated the journal
frequently through his recovery
and complications, including a
scary bout with pneumonia late
in 2008.
“So many people were pulling and praying for my
family and me,” Jason said. “It gave me strength
for my recovery. I felt like I had to do my best to
recover for them.”
The guestbook entries continue
to encourage Jason
today. “When I get
down now, I go back
and read the site and
realize it was worse
before and I got through
it. It’s great medicine to
see the support and
see how I dealt with and
survived the condition.”
Because of journal posts
on CaringBridge, the Pablos
also received help with the
kids during their summer
break and care packages to
help ease their burdens.
Jason’s health has now stabilized and he’s slowly returning to
the activities he loves. Happily, Jason’s CaringBridge story will
soon conclude with the creation of a CaringBook, a customized
keepsake book of his journal, photos and guestbook messages
that he and his family can use to remember the activity and
emotion surrounding the experience.
“I used to think I didn’t want
to remember the hard stuff,
the trying times,” Aliw said.
At first I didn’t know how I felt about
CaringBridge. Then I read the guestbook
entries. The support was a tremendous lift...

CaringBridge Is Connection to Hope,
Love and Shared Trials for Joneses
Like the star in a fairy tale, little girls dream of being a princess,
dancing with a handsome knight at the majestic ball. While not a
knight-in-shining-armor, thousands of people bestowed the title
of princess upon Taylor Jones as they followed her battle against
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on her CaringBridge site.
Diagnosed on September 30, 2008, then three-year-old Taylor
rarely let the illness or treatments dampen her spirit. She faced
four rounds of chemotherapy to kill her cancer and her bone
marrow; a bone marrow transplant on February 5, 2009; and a
long recovery. Without a bone marrow transplant, Taylor had a
0-20% chance of survival.
She has done more than survive. Somehow, through even some
of the hardest days, spunky little Taylor managed smiles that
sustained her parents. During treatments, she and her mom,
Gina, danced and watched the movie “Happy Feet.” “If her toes
were tapping, we knew she was okay,” Gina said.
So many moments and photos of this little princess’s journey
have been captured on her CaringBridge site, which was
created during her first week of treatments. Gina was pleasantly
overwhelmed by the guestbook entries and the connection to
people who checked in daily. “It still just blows my mind
that there are people all over the world praying for
not just Taylor but for all kids with cancer,” she said.
In less than two years, “Honey Bear’s” site has amassed nearly
500,000 visits and more than 10,000 guestbook greetings.
With Gina’s family in Nebraska and her husband Shane’s relatives
in Illinois and Texas, Gina originally saw CaringBridge as a
connection for them. She soon found an even greater purpose.
“We were blindsided because we couldn’t find personal stories or
non-medical information on AML, treatments and bone marrow
transplants,” she said.“I wanted to help other families understand
the process.” CaringBridge is Gina’s means of connection with
those families.
Of course, treating cancer is not routine. Taylor faced difficulty
along the way with cytomegalovirus (CMV), septic shock
and the BK virus, which nearly claimed her life. Connecting
with other cancer parents via CaringBridge was a source of
encouragement for Gina because she
realized they weren’t alone. Now, she
often expresses support in others’
guestbooks to return the favor.
Taylor remembers that she wasn’t
alone through her cancer treatment
and recovery. Her dance therapist,
the child-life specialist and the
nurses are more often recalled
than the pain and vomiting. And, of
course, she won’t forget her family.
Her mom never left her side and
her dad and brothers were there
for her treatments in Colorado
Springs through the transplant
and recovery in Denver.
Shane said he was able to manage
the day-to-day activities by focusing on the
future. “I kept going in the hope that
one day she would be all better
and this would be behind us. And I
had faith in Taylor’s strength.”
One year after her bone marrow transplant
and nearly five years old, Taylor has a 90%
chance of survival. As she’s gone from
being too weak to walk to taking her first
ballet class, CaringBridge has been there to
capture it all…and all her smiles, too.
She begins her daily posts with “Day 189” or “Day 365” to give
families an idea of what to expect and when.
CaringBridge was an emotional outlet for me. I
could write and I didn’t have to talk to anybody.
When you’re in the room with your child, you
can’t say, ‘I’m scared my daughter is going to die.’

i am Connection...
The Need is Great. You Can Help.
isolated...scared...overwhelmed...
That’s how many of the families behind every one of the 56,000 new CaringBridge sites in 2009 likely felt until
they started their CaringBridge site. Through CaringBridge, they received Hope, Healing and
Connection.
Sadly, there are many more people still feeling overwhelmed, isolated and scared because they haven’t heard of
CaringBridge or they don’t understand the simplicity of our service or the difference it can make.
CaringBridge is so much more than a social networking site. The truth is CaringBridge is designed for the sole
purpose of helping families facing a serious health event to communicate quickly, privately and efficiently online.
Our built-in privacy features protect a family’s updates from unwelcome Internet searches and strangers. No
other service is more recognized and recommended by the healthcare community as a valuable resource for
aiding emotional, spiritual and physical healing.
Please help us in spreading the news about CaringBridge. We’ll continue our national
marketing outreach but we know the most effective introduction to CaringBridge comes
through a personal recommendation.
Here’s what you can do:
1. Tell others about CaringBridge when you hear of a recent diagnosis, accident,
premature birth or imminent transplant.
2. Become a CaringBridge Facebook fan,Twitter follower and YouTube viewer
for the latest information from us and share it with your network.
3. Go to www.CaringBridge.org to download free flyers, posters and table tents that you
can display at your office, place of worship, neighborhood coffee shop or wherever else
you go often.
4. Support the mission of CaringBridge with a financial gift.Your generosity ensures
families receive the hope, healing and connection they need.
™
Together, we can make the difference in the lives of people you know and love.
™
™
When I was really in the dumps ... to get up every morning
and read what people wrote [in my CaringBridge guestbook]
overnight was one of the key things that got me through my
day. It ... helped me say ‘OK, let’s keep moving forward.’

talk about what I’m going through
and complain if I need to.

Support of CaringBridge
Bruce and Mary Deinken first began a CaringBridge experience in 2005, when Mary’s sisterin-law Judy was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. She underwent a lung transplant and today,
Judy is doing well.
Every year since Judy’s diagnosis, the Deinken’s have faithfully supported the mission of
CaringBridge and have even included CaringBridge in their estate plans.
Because healthcare events can happen to anyone and often without warning, the Deinken’s
believe it is important for CaringBridge to be available for patients and their caregivers. “No
one ever thinks it can happen to them, but the next person who could benefit from this service
could be you,” Bruce said.
Last year, Mary created a single CaringBridge site to update family and friends about her parents.
Because of their experience with Judy, Mary and her siblings decided to use CaringBridge to
create the sense of community they needed as their parents aged and faced multiple health issues.
“We wholeheartedly support the service CaringBridge provides during
trying times,” Mary said. “CaringBridge is one of our favorite donations we
make every year.”

cause to donate to. When people donate to
CaringBridge, they are allowing Ellery’s story
to go on and help others.

My favorite part about CaringBridge was that
I got supportive messages back from people.
Sometimes it’s just really lonely when you’re

Partner Profile: Caring Connections
Provided by the Hospital
CaringBridge has many outstanding healthcare partners such as the Nemours/
Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware, where the Leongs
(featured on pages 4 - 5) received their introduction to CaringBridge. The hospital
believes in the benefits of the connections provided through CaringBridge sites so
much that it includes CaringBridge information in its admissions packet given to
every family – that was more than 8,000 families in 2009.
“Families may feel separated and emotionally drained as they
deal with their child’s hospitalization,” said Edward Woomer, LCSW,
director of the Patient and Family Services Department at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont
Hospital for Children. “The ability to update all of their friends and families at once
saves them precious time and, more importantly, it lets parents focus on their child.”
The hospital administration is comfortable recommending CaringBridge because
of its privacy and ease of use, which are critically important to both the hospital
and families, according to Woomer. And the hospital’s support of CaringBridge is a
source of hope, healing and connection that carries on beyond
those served by the hospital, such as Gavin’s mom, Kate Leong, who recommends
CaringBridge as a NICU volunteer.
The ability to update all of
their friends and families at
once saves them precious time
and, more importantly, it lets
parents focus on their child.
