Life is full of traditions. Many are handed down through
the years, and some are newly created between family
and friends. Either way, traditions are part of the colorful
fabric that intertwines our lives and holds us together,
transcending time and distance. One common tradition
this time of year is making New Year’s resolutions, which
usually include stopping bad habits or starting good
habits. Lose weight. Enjoy life to the fullest. Stay fit and
healthy. These are the leading resolutions among older
adults each year. It is never too late to decide to pursue
a healthy lifestyle, which increases the odds of aging
gracefully. Plan to exercise often, eat nutritious foods and
encourage each other while doing so. Sounds like a
good resolution and we would like to help you achieve
in 2016! We know that getting started can be the
hardest part, so join us in January, as we kick off the
“New Year, New You” Fitness Challenge”!
Kick Off Party will be on Tuesday, January 12th, 10am
Raffles for free memberships, classes, and wellness prizes.

Participants who attend regularly scheduled activities at the
center, excluding the $500 Jackpot bingo, monthly luncheons,
and special events will be required to become a member of the
center.
RESIDENTS OF MONROEVILLE AND PITCAIRN
DONATIONS:
Residents of Monroeville and Pitcairn receive a “FREE”
membership to the center. Participants must register in
the main office and receive a membership card.
The Monroeville Senior
Citizens Center is owned
and operated by the
Municipality of Monroeville.
The municipality covers the
operational costs of the
building. All programming
expenses are raised and
paid for by the Monroeville
Council of Senior Citizens.
NON RESIDENTS
Non-residents are required to pay a $12 annual fee
Participants must register in the main office and receive a
membership card.
YOU WILL BE GIVEN A MEMBERSHIP CARD
Each participant will receive a membership card upon
registration. You are required to scan this card each time you
enter the building. Just wave the card in front of one of the
scanners located at either the front desk, or east/west exits.
If you swipe your card at one of the exit doors, you do not
have to swipe it at the main desk.
SWIPE YOUR CARD
The membership cards keep track of how many members we
have as well as how many visits we receive each month. We are
required to report these figures each month to the municipality.
These records justify our annual budget and funding.
The Monroeville Senior Citizens Center receives grant funding
each year. We are rewarded these funds based on our monthly
attendance records. These opportunities will not be available,
if our attendance records do not show the need!
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU SWIPE YOUR CARD!
Each year the Senior
Council works hard to raise
funds to offset expenses.
These funds have helped
pay for the following:
Exercise equipment,
commercial grade
appliances for the kitchen,
furniture for the lobby,
computers, and movie
screen/projector. These
funds also offset our
entertainment.
Donations can make a big
difference. Even the smallest
amount can help. The
center is a 501 © (3)
charitable organization and
your donation would be taxdeductible. Please contact
the main office if you would
like to make a contribution!

“Lifestyles for Active Adults 50 Years and Older” Page 13 of 24 Nutrition Kitchen with Sue Lomeo, RD, LDN
Baby It’s Cold Outside! With less daylight outside, many of us move around a lot less. Days are
shorter—rather than that walk after work in the dark, we go home and curl up with a blanket and
snack instead. Those comforting carbs are only as far away as the kitchen. Choose wisely this
season and find yourself healthier come spring. Winter foods are extremely healthy… Sweet
potatoes, squash, apples, pumpkin and greens, nuts and seeds. These foods are packed with
nutrients such as fiber, beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and protein. Be mindful when you eat.
We eat whatever is on our plate! Try this hearty and healthy dish using whole foods: Wheat berries
provide and excellent source of fiber, are low in sodium and rich in B vitamins and magnesium.
They also provide plant estrogens which may reduce your risk for certain cancers. Butternut squash
is a great source of vitamin A (a powerful anti-oxidant), vitamin C, potassium and magnesium.
Kale provides vitamin K, A, and C. Kale is a stand out food with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and
anti-cancer nutrients. Pack these 3 foods together and you’re in for one healthy recipe!
Butternut Squash, Kale and Wheat Berry Salad
3 cups butternut squash, cut into ¼ in. cubes
1 Tbsp olive oil
Salt and Pepper
½ cup wheat berries
1 ½ cup water
8 cups baby kale
1/3 cup crumbled low fat feta cheese
¼ cup chopped pistachios/walnuts
¼ cup golden raisins/dried cranberries
Maple Tarragon Salad Dressing
Preheat oven to 420 degrees. Toss squash with olive oil, salt and pepper and place on baking sheet
in one even layer. Bake 10 minutes, turn and bake another 10 minutes until browned and soft.
Remove from oven and set aside. Rinse wheat berries in cold water. Drain. Place wheat berries and
water into small saucepan and sprinkle with salt. Cover and bring to boil. Reduce to simmer and
cook covered for 45-50 minutes or until cooked. These will usually stay chewy. In a large serving
bowl, toss kale, feta, pistachios, dried cranberries, roasted squash, wheat berries, and dressing.
Maple Tarragon Salad Dressing
1 large clove garlic, mashed
¾ tsp dried tarragon
1 Tbsp Maple Syrup
¼-½ tsp salt
¼ cup white vinegar
1/3 cup EV Olive Oil
Place garlic and salt/pepper into the bottom of a salad dressing container. Stir in maple syrup,
tarragon and vinegar. Add oil in a constant stream while whisking, or shake in a container with a lid.
You want to emulsify the dressing—it will look creamy.
