Tanzania

The Northern National Parks in Tanzania – commonly known as the Northern Safari Circuit – offer

Stretching for 50km along the base of the rusty-gold 600-metre high Rift Valley escarpment, Lake
Manyara is a scenic gem, with a setting extolled by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest I had seen in
Africa”.
The diverse terrain across Lake Manyara National Park means that the mammal and bird lists are most
impressive. The forest is home to baboons and blue monkeys as well as bushbuck and forest hornbills.
Across the floodplains buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe congregate to graze and the acacia woodland
is the favoured haunt of Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions and large-tusked elephants. Black rhino
are often seen and leopard are commonly sighted in the early morning or late evening. Manyara is noted
for its wealth of birdlife with over 400 species recorded. At times the Lake is visited by thousands of pink
flamingos as well as pelicans, cormorants and storks.

Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area
A World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater is probably the most spectacular game haunt
in Africa and it is also the world’s largest volcanic caldera. The crater floor is 610m below
the rim and 19.2km in diameter and it is home to over 30,000 animals, almost half being
wildebeest and zebra, and all of the ‘Big Five’ may be seen including the black rhino. Among
the notable birds are Lammergeyer, Verreaux’s Eagle and Egyptian Vulture which make their
homes in the high cliffs of the crater wall.
Also located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is Olduvai Gorge - another of
Tanzania’s eight World Heritage Sites. It was here that Dr. Louis Leakey and his wife Mary
discovered the skull of “nutcracker man” and the remains of homo habilis or “handy man”.
Ngorongoro Krater Naturschutzgebiet
Als eine Welterbestätte ist Ngorongoro Krater möglicherweise der spekulärsten Lieblingsplatz für

die Überreste von homo habilis oder „Handwerker“ gefunden.

spettacolare luogo di ritrovo della selvaggina di tutta l’Africa ed è anche la più grande caldera
vulcanica del mondo. La parte più bassa del cratere è 610 metri al di sotto dell’orlo, ha un diametro

habilis.

Serengeti National Park
The oldest, largest and best known of Tanzania’s National Parks, this worldfamous wildlife sanctuary offers the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa
and probably the world: herds of buffalo, elephant and giraffe, and thousands of
eland, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle.
The Serengeti is most famous however as the natural ampitheatre for the annual
wildebeest migration. During May and June, a million wildebeest, joined by
200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelle, move westward in a three week
frenzied trek in search of new grazing. Long columns lunge through crocodileinfested waters and carnivores follow the herds ready to hunt the weaker
stragglers.
Serengeti Nationalpark

Marangu Route (“Coca-Cola Route”)
The oldest and best established route, the Marangu route is considered to be the
easiest trek up the mountain due to its gradual slope. It is also the only route where
climbers can sleep in huts in dormitory style accommodation. The Marangu route
takes a minimum of five days although an extra acclimatization day on the mountain
is highly recommended.
Machame Route (“Whiskey Route”)
The Machame route is better suited to the more adventurous hiker, however the
rewards are scenic splendour not seen on the Marangu route. The days on Machame
are longer and the walks are steeper and accommodation is in tents. The Machame
route is normally completed in a minimum of 6 days.

Ruta Marangu (“La ruta de Coca-Cola“)
La ruta más antigua y mejor establecida, la ruta Marangu está considerada como la caminata
más fácil por la montaña, debido a su pendiente gradual. También es la única vía donde los
escaladores pueden dormir en cabañas de alojamiento de estilo dormitorio. La ruta Marangu

Marangu Strecke (“Coca-Cola Route”)
Die Maragu Strecke ist die älteste und bekannteste Strecke und wird als der einfachste
Treck bergauf wegen dem allmählichen Gefälle genommen. Sie ist auch die einzige Strecke,
auf der die Bergsteiger in Hütten mit Mehrbettzimmern übernachten können. Die Maragu
Strecke dauert fünf Tage, obwohl ein zusätzlicher Tag zur Akklimatisierung unbedingt
empfehlenswert ist.
