City Guide Maastricht
welcome
Visitors from all over the world are assured of a warm and friendly
welcome when visiting our beautiful city on the Meuse. Maastricht is a city
where you can taste the good life, a city where quality abounds. Whether you
plan to stay for a day or a long weekend in the city and region,
Maastricht is a place not to be missed.
Not only does Maastricht pride itself on its fine tradition of one-of-a-kind
shops and boutiques, it also offers a unique range of hotels and restaurants in terms of
diversity and quality. What I consider to be important is the service, creativity, innovation,
reliability, and style that we incorporate in everything we do here in Maastricht.
Maastricht is a sociable city with a sense of community. A city with a
centuries-old history, which nevertheless keeps its eyes firmly on the future.
Although we are a city full of trendy businesses, we also show you the grandeur
of our past at every corner and on every square. Prepare to be surprised by this
international university city with its charming centre and spectacular allure.
Maastricht lies at the very heart of Europe as it is here where the European
Union was created with the signing of the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992.
Next year we will be celebrating this 25th anniversary.
Maastricht welcomes the world!

Maastricht
maastricht
A place where north and south meet, the crossroads of the three countries that
together make up the Euregion Meuse-Rhine, the place where it’s hard to believe
you’re still on Dutch soil, it must be another country.
This is the place where you’ll find Maastricht...
COMPACT & CONTACT
MAASTRICHT is the
netherlands’ most
european city
You can feel it, you can see it,
and you can taste it! It’s a place
with a unique and authentic
energy and dynamism that you
won’t experience anywhere
else in the Netherlands. Once it
was the place where Germanic
and Roman cultures collided;
today it is the current mix
of cultures, languages, and
flavours that makes the city
burst with creativity, research,
enterprise, trend-setting and
culinary delights. Today’s
Maastricht is a city that has the
best of all worlds: north and
south; past and present. There
are historic buildings and
trendy designer boutiques;
4
majestic churches and thrilling
cave adventures; inspired menus and inviting café terraces;
lively festivals and sensational
expositions; stately squares
and vast vineyards. All this
and more makes Maastricht a
favourite destination for a day
of shopping, a weekend away
for two, or an elegant European
holiday.
EUREGIon
The Euregion Meuse-Rhine is
the three-country area where
the Netherlands, Germany, and
Belgium meet, home to four
million people and four different languages. At the heart of
this area lies Maastricht.
5
You will feel right at home
in Maastricht. You can get to
know the very compact city
centre very quickly, and you’ll
be greeted warmly everywhere
you go. The highlights are all
within walking distance, and
it’s hard to lose your way on
the charming, mostly car-free,
streets. But if you ever do,
there’s always someone willing
to point you in the right direction.
thE ‘mestreechter geis’
Charm, playfulness, a healthy
dose of humour, and a zest for
life: these are the ingredients
of the Maastricht local
character. This character has
been immortalized by the artist
Mari Andriessen in the bronze
statue ‘Mestreechter Geis’, on
the square near Stokstraat.

HISTORIc buildings
and contemporary
architecture
The whole of the Maastricht
city centre has been declared a
protected national monument.
In the historic buildings and
elegant houses, you will find
a rich variety of architectural
styles from different ages –
from the early Roman period
to the Maastricht Renaissance.
Experience the seamless transition from stately, old façades
to contemporary architecture
and the historic buildings
of the future. One beautiful
example is the architecture
district Céramique, built on
the former site of a prominent
ceramics factory. Another is the
Maastricht Academy of Fine
Arts and Design (MAFAD) on
Herdenkingsplein, designed by
Limburg architect Wiel Arets,
which UNESCO has named
as one of the most beautiful
buildings of the 20th century.
and where Maastricht and the
region come to enjoy the many
flavours of the Preuvenemint,
the Netherlands’ largest food
festival.
VRIJTHOF square
It’s been called the most
beautiful square in the country.
Maybe it’s because when you
stand in the middle of the
Vrijthof and look around, you
could almost forget you’re in
the Netherlands. But perhaps
it’s also because it’s the cultural
heart of the city. The place
where the theatre is framed
by intriguing museums and
spectacular churches. But it’s
also the place that undergoes a
metamorphosis almost weekly,
smoothly transitioning from
each cultural season and event
to the next, and the place where
all the patchwork collection of
colours and sounds of Carnival
come together, the beautiful
backdrop for the concerts of
local favourite André Rieu,

city of shopping
Designer boutiques and major
labels are found in abundance,
punctuated by genuine oneof-a-kind shops with unique
must-have fashion, lifestyle,
and design items and accessories. All this only adds to the
rich setting of the historic city
centre. The heart of the city
is rightly legendary among
fashion-lovers and shopaholics,
who can shop to their hearts’
content here, seven days a
week.
THE NETHERLANDS’
FASHION CAPITAL
Maastricht means André Rieu,
the Preuvenemint, and the Slevrouwe. It also has an impeccable sense of style, with its uni-
que boutiques and endless pool
of existing and emerging talent.
Full of quality, craftsmanship,
history, and authenticity, mixed
with the elegance for which
Maastricht is renowned. This
gives the city a unique sense
of fashion of which it can be
proud. Explore this vibrant city
of fashion, where there is space
for both the fashion industry
and creative designers, at

Another day,

If you love food, you won’t
be bored in Maastricht,
because you’ll find at least one
restaurant for just about every

type of cuisine here. From Mediterranean classics, to Asian
specialities, to the delights
you’ll only find here; and from
Michelin-starred restaurants
to wine bars to good old-fashioned
pubs, Maastricht has it all.
The countless restaurants
offer hospitality and quality for
every budget. You will find Maastricht’s restaurateurs eager to
showcase local products, not
only in traditional local dishes,
but in exciting and original
‘world cuisine’ combinations.
And don’t miss the chance
to visit some of the many
unique dining opportunities in
castles, estates, vaulted cellars,
warehouses, and churches.
Culinary highlights abound
throughout the city. Chef Hans
van Wolde of Beluga Loves You
has retained his two Michelin
stars for another year, and
the guide has also heralded
Château Neercanne and Tout à
Fait as ‘très bonne cuisine’ with
one star each.

slopes of the Jeker Valley.
Every year, Maastricht winegrowers produce delicious and
award-winning wines. Like De
Apostelhoeve, which produces
six lovely white wines from
Müller-Thurgau, Auxerrois,
Riesling, and Pinot gris grapes,
as well as two sparkling wines.
The Jeker Valley is also home
to the country’s second-oldest
vineyard, Hoeve Nekum, the
wines of which are literally
fit for a king - one of them,
a Hoeve Nekum Riesling,
was served at the wedding of
King Willem-Alexander and
Queen Máxima. For the best
wines, have a look in at the
Netherlands’ oldest wine shop,
Thiessen Wijnkoopers, which
also produces wines from its
own urban vineyard!
The oldest city?
Maastricht and Nijmegen
will probably continue to
debate which of the two is
the Netherlands’ oldest city
for centuries to come, but
whatever the answer, did you
know that Maastricht is home
to more historic buildings than
8
any city in the Netherlands
save one? All over the city, you
can still find the traces that go
back to Maastricht the Roman
settlement, religious centre,
garrison city, and early industrial powerhouse.
from roman settlement
to european melting pot
Roman settlement The name
Maastricht comes from the Latin Mosae Trajectum, ‘crossing
over the Meuse,’ which refers
to the bridge over the river that
the Romans built here around
the first century AD. Religious
centre (380) In this year, St.
Servatius, Bishop of Tongeren, moves the bishop’s see to
Maastricht. Joint sovereignty
(1204) Maastricht is granted
medieval city rights, and over
the course of the Middle Ages
falls under the dominion of the
Duke of Brabant and the Prince-Bishop of Liege. Garrison
city (1579) The Spanish army,
led by Alexander Farnese, Duke
of Parma, conquers Maastricht.
Republic (1632) Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik brings
Maastricht into the Republic of
the Seven United Netherlands.
French conquest (1673) The
French Sun King, Louis XIV,
captures Maastricht. During
the attack on the city walls, the
famous musketeer d’Artagnan
is killed. Dutch control (1678)
Maastricht returns to Dutch
rule. French Republic (1794)
Maastricht becomes part of the
French Republic. The French
abolish joint sovereignty and
make all residents French
subjects. Netherlands (1814)
Maastricht again comes under
Dutch rule. General Dibbets
succeeds in keeping Maastricht
in Dutch hands during the Belgian Revolution of 1830. Early
industrial city (1830) Petrus
Regout, a glass and pottery manufacturer in Maastricht, ushers
in the age of industrialization in
the Netherlands
with his purchase of the
country’s first steam engine.
University city (1976) The
State University of Limburg is
established in Maastricht
with the goal of breathing
new life into the economy of
Limburg after the closure of
the mines. Euregion MeuseRhine (1991) The cooperative
platform established by the
Dutch, German and Belgian
provinces in 1976 acquires legal
status in 1991 as the Euregion
Meuse-Rhine. The cooperation
relates primarily to universities
(both traditional and applied
sciences) and the business community. Treaty of Maastricht
(1992) Represen- tatives of
twelve European countries sign
the Treaty of Maastricht, paving
the way for the introduction of
the Euro.

biography
‘Zicht op Maastricht’ is the
title of the cultural biography
of Maastricht compiled from
stories provided by cultural

academics, professional and
amateur historians, and most
importantly, the people of

Maastricht themselves. Visit
www.zichtopmaastricht.nl
for the complete biography and
a historical look at the city.
A continuum
of craftsmanship
You have only to stroll through
Maastricht to taste it, smell it,
and experience it for yourself.
Here, you find yourself in a
continuum of crafts, some old,
some with a modern twist.
Take the Historical Printing
Museum, where you step back
in time onto the premises of a
unique printing and engraving
workshop that was active
around 1900. Then there’s the
Brewery Bosch, a craft brewery
with equipment dating from
1900-1929, still operating in
a building of industrial and
archaeological significance; or
the Bisschopsmolen, where the
baker’s craft is taken to new
heights alongside the country’s
oldest still operating water mill
of the Netherlands.

Kleine Staat 1
Maastricht has been a ‘tourist’
destination since the Middle
Ages, ever since the many
pilgrims who came to the
city to visit the grave of St.
Servatius. More than fifty
churches, chapels, monasteries,
and convents take part in the
annual religious processions
through the city, showing that
religion is still a vibrant part
of Maastricht’s culture. This is
also expressed in the Procession of Holy Relics, a ten-day
religious event that takes place
once every seven years and
draws tens of thousands of
visitors. The procession goes
back to 1391, and the next is
scheduled for 2018. Maastricht
has a great many impressive
churches well worth a visit,
perhaps the best-known being
St. Servatius Basilica and
Basilica of Our Lady, both
Romanesque churches. But the
lesser known, such
as the Cellebroeders Chapel,
St. John’s church, the first
Friars Minor church, and
many others, are equally
exquisite and worth a visit. In
recent years, thanks to creative
enterprise many monasteries and churches have been
repurposed to save them from
destruction. The fifteenthcentury Kruisherenklooster
and its church is a perfect
example of this. Starting in
2000, the entire complex was
transformed into a luxurious
designer hotel while preserving its history. Likewise, the
thirteenth-century former
Dominican church and
monastery has also begun
a new life, reopening as a
breathtaking bookshop after
a comprehensive restoration.

maastricht’s treasures
The core of the medieval transept basilica of St. Servatius
11
dates from around AD 1000
and was built above the grave
of St. Servatius. Maastricht
keeps its greatest relics in the
basilica’s treasury: the chest
reliquary, the goblet, and
the bust of St. Servatius. The
collection includes precious
metals, ivory, silks, paintings,
and statues. The treasure
room of Our Lady, Star of the
Sea, part of the 11th century
transept basilica of the same
name, is no less splendid
and magnificent, containing
various sacred objects of art
and fine craftsmanship: richly
embroidered copes and chasubles,
relics, procession banners, and
religious silver objects and
statues. The Gothic St. John’s
church is also part of the city’s
rich religious heritage. Originally a Roman Catholic parish
church, it was converted into
a Protestant church in 1632.
Its features include a very
noteworthy pulpit, beautiful
gravestones and wall paintings,
and the historic Binvignat
organ.

A UNIQUE CONFERENCE CITY
conference city
The quality of the accommodation and the location are critical for
the success of a convention, meeting, trade fair, or event. Maastricht
and South Limburg combine both perfectly.
14
Maastricht is an ideal place
for any business event. It’s
a compact city, and thanks
to its central location in
Europe it is a short trip away
no matter how you get here.
The city has eight airports
nearby and good national
and international train
connections. And for a city
of its size, Maastricht has a
very large conference centre, a huge number of hotel
rooms and, perhaps most
importantly, the talents,
skills, and experience to
receive international groups.
Maastricht is extremely
internationally oriented, and
is home to many international institutes, a teaching
hospital, and a university.
Thanks to the Brightlands
Campuses in this region, the
city is an excellent location
for meetings on health,
materials, and food. There
are locations that can meet
every need, from conference

and eclectic, to exclusive

restaurant, cosy pub with homey
atmosphere, and gastropub with
impressive tap list – all under one roof.
Open year-round for breakfast, lunch,
dinner, parties, or even just drinks,
with seasonal menus featuring
local specialities.
If you’re looking for ‘la cucina
Italiana’ with a twist, look for Restaurant
Laus between the Vrijthof and Onze Lieve
Vrouweplein squares. There’s no mistaking
the traditional Mediterranean hospitality
at Laus; the staff make personal
contact with every guest.
This is where hospitality and haute cuisine
meet. Chef Ralph Hermans is inspired by
the seasons to create dishes that combine
local products with influences from across
several continents. Jennifer Silvius, hostess
and sommelier, maintains a good ambiance
in the restaurant. Her passion for wine is
reflected in her unusual choice of wines.

In this part of the city, you can find the warmth and charm of a classic Maastricht pub on virtually every corner. The quarter takes its name from what may be the city’s most famous (or
n
infamous) street. Today, Stokstraat is known as the place for the mostLaexclusive
and luxury
shops in the Netherlands, but it was not always so. If there’s any street that has seen its fortunes turn over the years, it’s this one. In the Middle Ages, its reputation was dubious thanks
to its many bathhouse-brothels; later, the street enjoyed a renaissance with many reputable
merchants established in it, until, as the Industrial Revolution took hold and the city centre
became overpopulated with wave after wave of migrants from the countryside, the street became synonymous with grinding poverty. Living conditions here became so dire that there
was even talk of demolishing the entire street. The Stokstraat quarter of today is the result of
a dramatic redevelopment between 1950 and 1973, which succeeded in preserving its histosberg
er character but transforming it into a fashionable address for living, shopping, and dining.

quarter in the making
A piece of Maastricht that’s not there yet. The Sphinxkwartier is a quarter

Plans focus on the place where Maastricht’s industrial revolution began. It was here that
Petrus Regout built his ‘Sphinx Factory,’ the start of what grew into an enormous industry,
producing bathroom fixtures, tiles, and the products that made Maastricht great. The fac- w
lem
Fo r t W i l
tory operated until 2006, and since then efforts have been under way to redevelop
Halve this area
as a district that fits in with the city, but as something Maastricht does not already have.
That’s why this district is being designed to attract creative types, young residents, national
and international students, and expatriates. It will be internationally oriented, with room
for flexible space and temporary functions. Where this area is going is becoming clearer
and clearer, in things like the arrival of the pop music stage in a former sawmill, and the
newly opened Brandweer(kantine), with workspaces and meeting places for creative entrepreneurs. But not everything in this part of the city is new and different. The historic and
picturesque river harbour ‘t Bassin, adjacent to the Sphinx area, makes a perfect buffer for
the transition from the more familiar and better known Maastricht to this new part of town.
Boschstraat
‘This is where the cultural, creative, and enterprising Sphinxkwartier will arise.’
So reads the ambition behind the plans for the development of the Sphinx area.

With the Sint Pietersberg hill, the historic caves, the vineyards, Fort Sint Pieter, and
Château Neercanne as backdrop, this part of the city has everything you need to capture that holiday feeling. Sint Pieter was its own municipality until 1920. This part
of the city was always outside the city walls (and so had it the toughest in times of war).
Then, it was mainly farmers who lived here; now, it’s mostly families, epicureans,
and a few descendants of the inhabitants of that old Sint Pieter. Today, Sint Pieter is
Maastricht’s most popular residential district, not just for its beautiful houses but because of its ideal location between city and green. And it still feels like its own town,
with its own social life, and charm, even though it’s just a stone’s throw away from the
city park. In fact, it has the best of both worlds: village and city. Nature and culture.

Sometimes you just have to take those few extra steps. That’s when Maastricht will surprise you with just how surprising the city centre really is. The Vrijthof has a number of
little streets leading into it from all directions. They include Brusselsestraat, Grote Gracht,
and De Kommel. Unlike the more idyllic boulevards in most of the rest of the city, these
streets evoke a feeling of the urban, the artistic, the unknown. Here, students and locals
come and go: artists, designers, professionals. It’s an area that’s moving fast: new shops,
start-ups, young businesses, surprising concepts. Yet at the same time, it’s bursting with
historic buildings, and is still very much a place where locals want to live. In truth, you
can’t really describe the streets around the Vrijthof in a few words. It’s where local, university, business, authentic, forward-looking, and surprising Maastricht all come together.

Ge tting there
Maastricht
Taxi ranks
getting there
Maastricht is very internationally-oriented, in many
respects - not only in terms
of the locals’ language ability,
but also in the extensive
road network, the eight
nearby airports, and the
excellent rail connections.
Find all the info you need
on www.maastrichtbereikbaar.nl.
Smart parking
Choose the rate that suits
you: cheaper on the outskirts,
more expensive in the
centre. As you drive into
the city, signs guide you to
the parking garages and car
parks with available spaces.
TIP: P+R NOORD (NORTH)
Park here for free and travel
for €1 p.p. (return) by train
to Maastricht Central Station or by shuttle bus to the
Markt (Market square).
Central Station, Markt,
Vrijthof
Public transport
By bus
From Maastricht Central
Station, there is a convenient bus service that
takes you straight to the
heart of the city.
This City Guide is

Travelling by train?
Daily train services run
from Maastricht to the
north, the south, and the
east. Maastricht has three
stations (Maastricht
Centraal (Central),
Randwyck, and Noord
(North).
By bicycle
Maastricht is also easy to
explore by bike. For bike
rental locations, see page
140. Please be aware that
parking bicycles outside
designated parking areas
is prohibited in Maastricht!

AIRPORTS
Maastricht-Aachen Airport
(MAA) is just outside
the city. The airports of
Brussels, Liège, Charleroi
(Brussels South), Düsseldorf, Weeze Niederrhein,
Cologne Bonn, and Eindhoven are all approximately
an hour away by car.
