PRACTICAL INFO who, what, where, when
Welcome to our
international city!
3
It is my honour to welcome you to Maastricht.
Maastricht is a very international city, and
that shows in a number of ways. Many Dutch
visitors say that coming to Maastricht is ‘like
going abroad’. We take that as a compliment.
Of course we’re proud of the Dutch culture, but
throughout history we’ve enjoyed combining
different cultures. For centuries Maastricht was
heavily influenced by Belgium and Germany.
That international character can be heard
on the streets. In addition to the sing-song
Maastricht dialect (and of course Dutch), you’ll
hear languages from all over: English, French,
German, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Russian,
Portuguese, Finnish, Chinese, Japanese, and
countless others. Some of these people are
tourists, but most are people who work or study
in Maastricht. With our many international
organizations and educational institutes like
Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, Maastricht School of Management, and United World College, we welcome
talented people from around the world.
As a result, while it’s clear that Maastricht is not
an international metropolis in terms of size, it
certainly is in terms of its character and outlook. It’s a lively, dynamic, historic city which is
easy to get around in. It offers countless historical landmarks, rich and varied shopping, and
renowned gastronomic experiences. Life can
be thoroughly enjoyed here. Maastricht hosts
major international events like The European
Fine Art Fair, the André Rieu concerts, Jumping Indoor Maastricht, City Polo Maastricht,
the Preuvenemint culinary festival, the Château
Maestricht regional cuisine event, Magical
Maastricht, and much more.
Maastricht is also working towards the future.
In the field of life science, for instance, the
Academic Hospital Maastricht and Maastricht University work together on the Health
Campus. The city is also working on practical
connections like the subterranean double-decker tunnel for the A2 motorway.
It’s this combination of old and new, of history
and future, that makes Maastricht so attractive.
Enjoy every bit of it!

Historic buildings and
trendy design shops.
Beautiful churches and
adventure-filled caves.
Tantalizing menus and
welcoming café terraces.
Dynamic festivals and
high-profile expositions.
Open squares and expansive vineyards. Maastricht
is all this and more! No
wonder it’s such a popular
destination for a day out,
a weekend away, or an
unforgettable holiday.
MARCHING MUSIC!
The colourful ‘Zaate Herremenie’, representing a Carnival orchestra, welcomes
you to Vrijthof square, one
of the Netherlands’ most
famous squares. The statues
created by the artist Han
van Wetering symbolize the
three days each year that
the square is coloured red,
yellow, and green during
the traditional Maastricht
Carnival celebrations.
WALKING DISTANCE
You’ll soon know your way
around Maastricht. The
city centre is compact. The
highlights are all within
walking distance and most
streets are off limits to cars,
so you won’t lose your way!
JOIE DE VIVRE
Charm, playfulness, a
healthy helping of humour,
and a zest for life: Those
are the ingredients of the
Maastricht native character.
This character has been
immortalized by the artist
Mari Andriessen in the
bronze statue ‘Mestreechter
Geis’, on the square near
Stokstraat.
RIEU’S ROOTS
The waltz king André Rieu
returns to his birthplace
Maastricht every summer
with his Johann Strauss
Orchestra. The Vrijthof
square becomes the backdrop for a huge open-air
concert filled with delightful melodies and lots of
romance!
Unique
neighbourhoods:

has its own unique
character.

has a map showing the
neighbourhoods.
Stately lady
The Markt square is the
heart of Maastricht, boasting the contemporary architecture of the municipal
offices and crowned by the
beautiful seventeenth-century city hall. The Markt’s
character suits the centre
of a city, with the bustle of
businesspeople and a noisy
weekly market.
Maastricht’s living
room
The Vrijthof square, perhaps
the Netherlands’ most
famous square, is the backdrop for the Preuvenemint
culinary festival, the André
Rieu concerts, and the
Theater aan het Vrijthof.
Sit down at one of the welcoming café terraces and
enjoy the heavenly view of
the St. Servaas basilica and
the St. Janskerk.
Exclusive charm
The Stokstraat quarter is
exclusive and charming,
with a hint of spirituality.
Little alleyways are reminiscent of the city’s Roman
past. The quarter’s highlight
is Stokstraat itself.
This former ghetto is now
one of Maastricht’s most
exclusive shopping streets.
It borders on the charming
Onze Lieve Vrouweplein
square with the Onze Lieve
Vrouwe basilica, where
hundreds of visitors light
candles daily in honour of
Maria Stella Maris.
It’s worth
the trip!
Latin Quarter
The Jeker quarter combines
picturesque settings with
a hospitable, artisanal
character. The Jeker river
babbles its way through
the quarter. Surrounded
by the old city walls, this
quarter has a rich student
life thanks to nearby Maastricht University, Maastricht Drama Academy,
and Maastricht Academy
of Music.
Across the river
The district of Wyck serves
as Maastricht’s front door,
the first district that you
see when you step off the
train. Wyck has a unique
atmosphere: contemporary
flair in a historic setting, filled
with fashion, accessories,
design, antiques, and gastronomy in the most stylish
shops and restaurants.
Architecture
par excellence
Céramique, Maastricht’s
newest district, exudes
lifestyle and architecture
at its best. Walk from
historic Wyck to modern
Céramique past large-scale
buildings by internationally
renowned architects and
inspiring high-end interior
design shops.
The Bonnefantenmuseum
and Centre Céramique are
the district’s highlights.
Hill and dale
Sint Pieter is a park-like
neighbourhood bounded
by the Sint Pietersberg hill,
the Jeker valley, and the city
park. Here you’ll find the
300-year-old Fort St. Pieter
and the marl caves. It’s an
easy walk from the city
centre over St. Pietersberg
hill and past the sloping
vineyards into Belgium.
A look ahead
Belvédère is a developing
eloping
neighbourhood that’s
hat’s a
cross between Manhattan,
tan,
Milan, and Hyde Park,
with a dash of an English
garden. It’s the home of the
harbour ’t Bassin with its
historic cellars on the wharf
(now housing restaurants
and shops). The Timmerfabriek is the neighbourhood’s cultural heart.
Across the border
The enjoyment doesn’t stop
when you leave the city
limits! Among the green
hills flanking the Meuse
you will find high-class
restaurants and hotels with
private vineyards, fruit
orchards, and countless
opportunities for outdoor
and water recreation.

CITY ON THE MEUSE
Maastricht thanks its existence
to the Meuse River. A settlement
arose around the bases of the
Roman-built bridge over the
Meuse. This settlement grew
into the Maastricht we know
today. From the water, you can
see a different side of Maastricht.

HISTORY OF
MAASTRICHT
Maastricht not only vies with
Nijmegen for the honorary
title of ‘oldest Dutch city,’ it is
also the Netherlands’ second
monumental city. Maastricht’s
history as a Roman settlement,
religious centre, garrison city,
and early industrial powerhouse is still visible.
Old, but
not obsolete
THROUGH THE YEARS…
Roman settlement
Around the beginning of the
Common Era, the Romans
drove the Celts out of
Maastricht and built a bridge
over the Meuse. ‘Maastricht’
comes from the Latin ‘Mosae
Trajectum’, meaning ‘ford over
the Meuse’.
Religious centre
380
Bishop Servatius moves the
episcopal see from Tongeren
to Maastricht. In the Middle
Ages, his grave is a popular
pilgrimage site.
1204
Maastricht is granted medieval
city rights. During the Middle
Ages Maastricht comes under
the joint sovereignty of the
dukes of Brabant and the
prince-bishops of Liège.
Garrison city
1579
The Spanish army, led by Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma,
conquers Maastricht.
1632
The Stadtholder Frederik
Hendrik brings Maastricht into
the Seven United Netherlands.
1673
The French Sun King, Louis
XIV, captures Maastricht.
During the attack on the city
walls, the famous musketeer
d’Artagnan is killed.
1678
Maastricht is restored to
Dutch rule.
1794
Maastricht becomes part of
the French Republic, which
abolishes joint sovereignty and
grants French citizenship to all
residents.
1814
Maastricht again comes under
Dutch rule. General Dibbets
succeeds in keeping Maastricht
in Dutch hands during the
Belgian Revolution of 1830.
Early industrial city
1830
Industrialization is started in
the Netherlands when Petrus
Regout, a glass and pottery
manufacturer in Maastricht,
purchases the first steam
engine.
1976
The State University of Limburg is established in Maastricht in hopes of reinvigorating the economy of Limburg
after the mines are closed. In
1996, it is renamed Maastricht
University.
1991
The cooperative platform established by the Dutch, German
and Belgian provinces in 1976
acquires legal status in 1991 as
the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. The
cooperation initially applies
primarily to universities and
businesses.
1992
Representatives of twelve
European countries sign the
Treaty of Maastricht leading to
the introduction of the euro.

ZICHT OP MAASTRICHT:
A CULTURAL BIOGRAPHY
Maastricht is taking an innovative
approach to its history. In a website
chock-full of information and unique
activities, the city’s present is
constantly linked to its rich past.
Like people, a city can also have a
biography - a cultural biography,
that is. Zicht op Maastricht, which is
part of BV Limburg, is continuously
working on this biography. The city’s
stories are being supplied by cultural
heritage institutions, scientists, and
professional and amateur historians,
but mostly by the residents of Maastricht themselves!

Maastricht is a vibrant international student city. Over 10%
of its residents are students,

Maastricht is
a great place
for culture!
27
Culture:
see, smell,
analyse,
taste, feel,
watch, hear,
understand,
experience...
IT’S ALL IN THE MIX!
No matter what you do, in
Maastricht culture is always an
experience. You are submerged in a blend of shapes and
styles, colours and fragrances.
The past and the present are
intertwined in the countless
imposing monuments and
modern architecture. Its cultural palette gives Maastricht a
unique character - mysterious
and provocative with its underground cultural treasures and
characteristic towers, and dynamic and extroverted with its
lively festivals, expositions, and
breathtaking performances.
29
Whatever your taste,
Maastricht is guaranteed to
tickle your senses.
MONUMENTS
There are certain sights you
just have to see when you
visit Maastricht. Don’t miss
the Helpoort, the oldest city
gate in the Netherlands,
which was built by Henry I
of Brabant in 1229 as part of
the city’s fortifications. Now
it houses an exhibition on
Maastricht’s fortifications.
The city’s fortifications include the pentagonal Fort St.
Pieter, on the northern edge
of St. Pietersberg hill, dating
from 1701-1702.
You should also visit the
Museum aan het Vrijthof,
in the 14th-century home of
the Duke of Brabant. It now
houses a museum, café, and
shop.
The City Hall on the Markt
square is also part of
Maastricht’s heritage. It was
built in 1659-1664 by the
architect Pieter Post. The
tower dates from 1684 and
houses a carillon with 49
bells which is still played
regularly.
Dinghuis
Another historic building is
the Dinghuis, on the corner
of Kleine Staat and Grote
Staat. The Dutch word ‘staat’
in these street names means
‘the place where municipal
authority is located’. The
name ‘Dinghuis’ comes
from the Dutch ‘dingen’,
which means ‘to administer
judgement’. This building
was the courthouse until
around 1650. These days, it
houses VVV Maastricht, the
Maastricht tourist board.

heritage is not visible to the
eye, as there are almost as
many cultural treasures below
ground as above ground.
The Derlon Hotel’s cellar
houses a museum with
Roman artefacts from the
second, third, and fourth
centuries. Another underground museum, Schuilen in
Maastricht, is located one of
the galleries of the Kazematten underground bunker
complex. This museum is
devoted to the shelters created
in Maastricht during World
War II and the Cold War.
Maastricht is also surrounded
by the Du Moulin Line and
the Kazematten, a network of
tunnels and mine shafts used
in defending the city during
times of siege between 1575
and 1825.
MAASTRICHT CAVES
The tunnels made by mining
for marlstone are also worth
visiting. St. Pietersburg hill
has the North and Zonneberg
Caves; and the Jesuits’ Cave,
with sculptures from all over
the world, is at Cannerberg
hill.

RELIGIOUS CULTURE
Maastricht has been a ‘tourist’
destination since the Middle
Ages. Pilgrims flocked to the
city to visit the grave of St
Servatius. Over fifty churches,
chapels, monasteries, and
convents take part in the
annual religious processions
through the city, showing that
religion is still a vibrant part
of Maastricht’s culture.
The St Servatius procession
is a ten-day religious event
held once every seven years
since 1391. It brings tens of
thousands of visitors to
Maastricht. The next one will
take place in 2018.
MAASTRICHT’S
TREASURES
The core of the medieval
transept basilica of St Servatius
dates from around AD 1000
and was built above the grave
of St Servatius (St. Servaas).
Maastricht keeps its greatest
relics in the basilica’s treasury:
the chest reliquary (Noodkist), the goblet, and the bust
of St Servatius. The collection
includes precious metals,
ivory, silks, paintings, and
statues.
The treasury of the basilica
of Onze Lieve Vrouwe is no
less magnificent. It contains
religious art and articles
including richly embroidered liturgical garments,
relics, processional banners,
liturgical silver, and statues.
The Gothic St. Janskerk is also
part of the city’s rich religious
heritage. Originally a Roman
Catholic parish church, it was
converted into a Protestant
church in 1632. It has a very
special pulpit, beautiful gravestones and wall paintings,
and the monumental
Binvignat organ.

FROM CHURCH TO…
The people of Maastricht are
highly inventive, particularly
in preserving their heritage. Over the years, many
churches, monasteries, and
convents have been threatened
with closing. They have them
from destruction by receiving
a new use.
The fifteenth-century Kruisherenklooster (Monastery of
the Crosiers) and its church is
a perfect example of this. The
entire complex was transformed
into a luxurious design hotel
with respect for its history. The
thirteenth-century former
Dominican church and
monastery have also been
repurposed. After thorough
restoration work, it now houses
a bookshop.
BEAUTIFUL CHURCHES

UNDERGROUND
This is the collective name for
everything there is to see and
experience in Fort Sint Pieter,
the caves, and the Kazematten.
Go back in time, enter the
darkness, and let your imagination wander as you listen
to the stories of Maastricht
Underground.
Fort Sint Pieter
Step back in time and
experience history during a
tour of Fort St. Pieter. Your
enthusiastic guide will show
you the well, the embrasures,
and the cannon gallery while
telling you wonderful stories,
anecdotes, and facts. The
tour ends at the top of the
Fort, offering a breathtaking
view over the city, the Meuse
river, and the surrounding
landscape.
Caves under
Sint Pietersberg hill
Do you dare go underground?
Not afraid of the dark?
Explore the caves within the
Sint Pietersberg hill, North
Caves, and Zonneberg Caves!
Over the centuries, the mining
of marl in the caves has
created a labyrinth with over
20,000 tunnels. Both ‘block
breakers’ and artists have left
their traces here. The caves
also served as a refuge for the
people of Maastricht during
the many sieges of Maastricht
as well as during the Second
World War.
Kazematten (underground
tunnels/bunkers)
Between 1575 and 1825, a network of underground passageways or mine galleries was
created on the western side of
Maastricht. During times of
siege, these tunnels were used
to surprise the enemy from
underground. During the
Second World War, the people
of Maastricht sheltered here
from bombardments.
Visit the vaulted chambers,
powder rooms, and imposing
bombproof shelters and find
out more about this unique monument of military
engineering. You can also
see the above-ground and
underground fortifications in
a single tour. Two different
tours covering this have been
developed by Stichting
Maastricht Vestingstad:
Tour of the Du Moulin Line
and the Long Kazematten
Walk.

EXCITING
COLLECTIONS
Art excites, seduces, surprises,
shocks or awakens other
emotions. And you can find
plenty of it in Maastricht’s
museums and art galleries.
But you can also dive into
history and meet Bèr and
Carlo, the famous Mosasaurusses of Maastricht. Or you
can experience Maastricht’s
past through stories about
the history of local crafts
and industry.
MAASTRICHT TELLS
ITS STORIES…
The Museum of Natural
History tells the story of
Limburg and its nature
from ancient times until the
present. The highlight is the
66-million-year-old Mosasaurus fossil, nicknamed ‘Bèr,’
and you can also watch live
images of the work on the
new Mosasaurus fossil ‘Carlo’.
To learn more about Maastricht, you can visit the Centre
Céramique, which houses the
public library.
You can view a historic scale
model of the city or attend
exhibitions on archaeology,
cultural history, Maastricht
earthenware, etc. Cultural activities like concerts, lectures,
and workshops are regularly
organized. The Museum aan
het Vrijthof, restored in 2012,
shows five centuries of the
cultural history of Maastricht
through objects of industrial
art, style rooms, and paintings. Each year the museum
also has two exhibitions about
local fine and industrial art.
ART IN THE CITY
More works of visual art can
be viewed in the Bonnefantenmuseum. The collection
includes important medieval
religious artefacts, wooden
sculptures from the Maasland
region, Italian paintings
from 1300-1600, and South
Netherlands paintings from
approximately 1475-1625. A
great deal of contemporary art
is also exhibited, with a focus
on works by internationally
renowned conceptual artists
and local artists.
In addition, Marres House
for Contemporary Culture
explores the visual arts in
the broadest sense with a
programme of exhibitions,
lectures, research, performances, and publications.

Old & new:
exciting!
ARCHITECTURE
Functionality, stability and
aesthetics are the three
elements which architecture
strives to bring into balance.
In Maastricht you can see the
various architectural styles
used over the centuries to
achieve that end. Discover the
exciting interplay of old and
new architecture.
HISTORIC BUILDINGS
AND CONTEMPORARY
ARCHITECTURE
Maastricht’s entire city
centre is a protected national
monument. The monumental
buildings and elegant villas
show architectural styles from
various periods – from the
early Roman period to the
Maastricht Renaissance style.
The Maastricht Renaissance is
characterized by steep pitched
roofs over attics used to store
food during the many periods
of siege. But architecture is
still very much alive today.
Experience the seamless
transition from historic
monuments and façades to
contemporary architecture
and the monuments of the
future. A beautiful example
of the latter is the Academy of
Visual Arts on Herdenkingsplein square, designed by the
Limburg architect Wiel Arets,
which UNESCO described
as one of the most beautiful
buildings of the 20th century.
The houses on Veldekeplein
square are prime examples
of contemporary urban
architecture.
URBAN DEVELOPMENT
Céramique is the modern
neighbourhood on the east
bank of the Meuse. The
neighbourhood owes its name
to the Société Céramique
ceramics factory which used
to be here. In 1987, Jo Coenen, the former Government
Architect, started implementing his master plan for the
redevelopment of the former
factory grounds. He called
on internationally renowned
architects such as Botta, Siza,
Galfetti, and Cruz & Ortiz
for the design of the office
and apartment buildings. The
Italian architect Aldo Rossi
designed the Bonnefantenmuseum. Jo Coenen himself designed the Centre Céramique,
a library and cultural centre.
Impressive monuments of the
city’s industrial past also mark
some of the district’s architectural highlights. The best
example is the Wiebengahal
dating from 1912, built using
construction methods which
at the time were pioneering in
their use of concrete.
Bureau Europa addresses
current topics on the developments in architecture and
design from a sociocultural
point of view in a varied exhibition programme.
Maastricht is also currently
developing the Belvédère
neighbourhood, which is
intended to be an international, dynamic district with
a 24-hour knowledge and
culture economy. The district
will combine the elegance of
Maastricht life with the raw
energy of an urban centre.

Finally... You’ve arrived in
Maastricht and you’re ready

MOSAE FORUM:
DISCOVER 21ST-CENTURY SHOPPING
BETWEEN MARKET AND MEUSE
Centuries of history and modern architecture

way. Mosae Forum exemplifies everything you
expect from shopping in Maastricht. At Mosae
Forum, you will find dozens of different fashion
houses, general shops and speciality shops.
From sportswear shops to delicatessens, and
from supermarkets to restaurants. But they all
have the unique, sophisticated-yet-cosy Mosae
Forum atmosphere in common. Mosae Forum:
You don’t just visit it, you experience it!

Between the Markt and
Vrijthof squares, you can shop
to your heart’s content at
major chains in Mosae
Forum, the second shopping
centre in the middle of Maastricht. In the historic vaulted
cellars epicures can explore
the many culinary shops,
including Limburg specialities
at Preuve Limburg, Asian
products at Amazing Oriental,
and gastronomic highlights
at Traiteur Saveurs. The side
streets between Markt square
and Grote Staat house many

(Markt 19) takes you
back in time and gives each
article of clothing its own
story. Admire the breathtaking vintage clothing and lace,

All-organic
Would you rather shop for
organic breads, vegetables,
meats, and other sustainable
regional products? Every
Thursday between 2:00 PM
and 6:30 PM there is an
organic farmers’ market on ‘t
Percée, the little square under
the clock on Stationsstraat.
GOING
TO MARKET
General merchandise, special
goods, or themed products.
Weekly or at special events.
Here are the most important
open-air markets in Maastricht.
On Markt square
Maastricht’s most famous
market is held on its market
square, Markt. Every week
you can stroll past the wares,
enjoy the scents of fresh fruits
and vegetables, and hear any
number of languages.
Wednesday: small generalgoods market.
Friday: Large market with
general goods, fabric, produce,
and fish, 9:00 AM-3:00 PM.
Flea market
It’s always fun to rummage
among the antiques, collectibles,
books, and furnishings at a
flea market. Maastricht holds
a flea market every Saturday
from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
on Stationsstraat. The same
location sees a large antique
market held twice a year.
Biggest of all is the Mega Flea
Market held four times a year
in MECC Maastricht
(12-13 Apr, 21-21 Sep,
18-19 Oct, and 15-16 Nov).
Rummaging across
79
the border
If you can’t get enough of
open-air markets, there are
several Sunday markets in the
surrounding area.
The La Batte market in Liège
is held every Sunday 8:00
AM-2:00 PM. Or if you’re a
real early bird, Tongeren holds
an antiques and collectibles
market every Sunday 6:00
AM-1:00 PM.
The Netherlands’s
gastronomic
capital!

Maastricht is
perfect for
cooking
enthusiasts,
foodies, and
epicures.
Bon appétit!
A DIFFERENT CUISINE
EVERY DAY
Maastricht has plenty to
interest you in terms of
gastronomy, because nearly
every cuisine has at least one
restaurant here. From Mediterranean and Asian specialities to local delights and from
Michelin-starred restaurants
to traditional Maastricht
working-class pubs, the
countless restaurants offer
hospitality and quality for
every budget.
PULL UP A CHAIR
You’ll find restaurants in a
range of fascinating locations,
including castles, country estates, vaulted cellars,
warehouses, and even former
churches. This creativity is
also reflected in the dishes
served. Irresistibly delicious!
It’s just another reason to put
a trip to Maastricht on your
menu.

COUNTING THE STARS
‘Worth a detour’ is what the
Michelin Guide says about
Restaurant Beluga, to which
it has once again awarded
two stars. But Maastricht has
more culinary stars: Château
Neercanne, Toine Hermsen,
and Tout à Fait have each
been awarded one Michelin
star and the classification of
‘very good restaurants’!
BE SURE TO TRY…
...a typical Maastricht dish
such as zoervleis (meat stew),
huidvleis (brawn) or the local
Rommedoe cheese with its
powerful odour and taste,
finished off by a delicious
piece of vlaai (sweet tart).
CITY OF FLAVOURS
The Maastricht chefs and
restaurateurs enjoy using
local produce and products.
Regional ingredients can often
be found on menus in the city,
in both traditional dishes and
innovative fusion dishes.
ON YOUR
SHOPPING LIST
You can find many delicious
local ingredients and products
in Maastricht’s culinary
shops. At Adriaan de Smaakmaker, you can find fantastic
home-made mustards and
chutneys. For over a century,
Blanche Dael has been the
address for in-house roasted
coffee and speciality teas.
Come to Bisschopsmolen,
Bread & Delicious, and the
traditional bakery Souren
for traditionally-made bread,
Limburg vlaai (sweet tart)
and other delicacies. For all
the regional specialities under
one roof, come to Preuve
Limburg! Everything can be
taken home and enjoyed long
after your visit to Maastricht
is over.

addresses, go to

Maastricht winegrowers produce quality wines, many of

MAASTRICHT’S WINES
On Louwberg hill in Limburg
is one of the Netherlands’
oldest and largest vineyards,
Apostelhoeve. This vineyard
produces six white wines from

Riesling, and Pinot gris
grapes, as well as two
sparkling wines.
The Jeker valley also houses
the second oldest vineyard,
Hoeve Nekum. They even
make wines worthy of royalty
- at the wedding of King
Willem-Alexander and Queen
Máxima, one of the wines was
a Riesling from Hoeve Nekum. The best wines are found
in the Netherlands’ oldest
wine shop, Thiessen Wijnkoopers, which also produces
wines from its own urban
vineyard! Tours including

MAASTRICHT DINING
EXPERIENCE
Maastricht aan Tafel (the
Maastricht Dining Experience)
is a hugely popular tradition.
For two weeks in winter and
again in summer, various
Maastricht restaurants, representing a range of cuisines,
each serve a three-course
menu for € 25.20 per person.
But there’s more!
Several Maastricht cafés also
offer Maastricht aan de Bar,
during which you can get an
aperitif and snacks for two
people for € 10.20. If those
prices seem strange, it’s
because in each case the 20
eurocents are being donated
to the charity Fill the Cup,
which provides school meals
through the World Food
Programme.
That may not seem like a lot,
but it only takes 20 eurocents
to provide a healthy meal to a
school-age child in a
developing country.
The motto is ‘Small change,
big difference!’

Welcome,
Bienvenue,

It takes more than a day to get
to know Maastricht, especially if you want to explore
the unique rolling hills of the
surrounding area. The Euregio
Meuse-Rhine is famous for its
epicurean attitude, warm
hospitality, culinary excellence,
and many local artisanal
products. And cities and
towns like Valkenburg aan
de Geul, Hasselt, Liege, and
Aachen are all less than 30
kilometres away, making
Maastricht the ultimate
destination for city trippers!
The heart of Europe
ACROSS THE BORDER
Of course the city of
Maastricht offers lots to do
and see; but the surrounding
area also has plenty of theatres,
cinemas, museums, shops,
wellness locations, restaurants, and events. Discover the
thrilling city of Aachen with
its Cathedral, which has towered over the city’s roofs for
1200 years. In 2014 the city
will be honouring the 1200th
anniversary of the death of
Charlemagne, and three major
exhibitions will celebrate this
important figure in the history
of Europe.
The city of Liège has more than
25 specialized museums. Don’t
miss the beautiful churches of
St James the Minor, St Martin,
and St Bartholomew and their
stunning baptismal fonts. For
a special evening in Liège,
combine a dinner in one of
the countless restaurants with
a breathtaking performance
by the famous Orchestre
Philharmonique Royal de
Liège. You can learn about
Hasselt’s famous residents in
the Het Stadsmus museum,
and in the National Genever
Museum you can dive into the
world of this locally produced
liquor. Are you more interested
in fashion? In addition to
exploring the many boutiques
which Hasselt offers, you can
enjoy old and new fashion
trends in the Fashion
Museum of Hasselt.

Maastricht
GETTING THERE
Maastricht is very internationally oriented - in terms of
language skills as well as
accessibility. There are excellent roadways, five nearby
airports, and various train
connections. They say all
roads lead to Rome - but most
of them go through Maastricht! Find out more at
www.vvvmaastricht.nl.
CARS AND PARKING
