It is a city rich in history, which you cannot help but feel all around you as you stroll through the streets of the old centre or gaze upon our many historic buildings. But of course, more than anything else it is the people who make the city. Maastricht is, unquestionably, the Netherlands’ most international city. The people who live and work here go about their daily lives throughout the Euregio. And that international character is enhanced by educational institutions in the city, like Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, the Maastricht School of Management, and the United World College, all of which open their doors to talent from the whole world. And we are working towards the future! For example, on the Health Campus, a life sciences knowledge institution operated in partnership between the AZM and Maastricht University. Maastricht is also moving the city forward, with projects like the Willem Alexander Tunnel and the redevelopment of the Sphinx district. Our city is full of enterprising and creative people with an eye for style and an appreciation of gastronomy. They are the driving force behind this lively city full of dining, shops, galleries, and events, from Carnival to TEFAF, and from the Preuvenemint to FASHIONCLASH. You can read all about this in this booklet. Discover! Experience! And enjoy Maastricht! O. Hoes Mayor of Maastricht 4 Lo cat i o n & at mos ph e r e Maastricht maastricht A place where north and south meet, the crossroads of the three countries that together make up the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, the place where it’s hard to believe you’re still on Dutch soil, it must be another country. This is the place where you’ll find Maastricht... MAASTRICHT is the netherlands’ most european city You can feel it, you can see it, and you can taste it! It’s a place with a unique and authentic energy and dynamism that you won’t experience anywhere else in the Netherlands. Once it was the place where Germanic and Roman cultures collided; today it is the current mix of cultures, languages, and flavours that makes the city burst with creativity, research, enterprise, trend-setting and culinary delights. Today’s Maastricht is a city that has the best of all worlds: north and south; past and present. There are historic buildings and trendy designer boutiques; 6 majestic churches and thrilling cave adventures; inspired menus and inviting café terraces; lively festivals and sensational expositions; stately squares and vast vineyards. All this and more makes Maastricht a favourite destination for a day of shopping, a weekend away for two, or an elegant European holiday. EUREGIO The Euregio Meuse-Rhine is the three-country area where the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium meet, home to four million people and four different languages. At the heart of this area lies Maastricht. COMPACT & CONTACT You will feel right at home in Maastricht. You can get to know the very compact city 7 centre very quickly, and you’ll be greeted warmly everywhere you go. The highlights are all within walking distance, and it’s hard to lose your way on the charming, mostly car-free, streets. But if you ever do, there’s always someone willing to point you in the right direction. thE ‘mestreechter geis’ Charm, playfulness, a healthy dose of humour, and a zest for life: these are the ingredients of the Maastricht local character. This character has been immortalized by the artist Mari Andriessen in the bronze statue ‘Mestreechter Geis’, on the square near Stokstraat. architecture & culture fas h i o n & fo o d Maastricht Maastricht who can shop to their hearts’ content here, seven days a week. HISTORIc buildings and contemporary architecture The whole of the Maastricht city centre has been declared a protected national monument. In the historic buildings and elegant houses, you will find a rich variety of architectural styles from different ages – from the early Roman period to the Maastricht Renaissance. Experience the seamless transition from stately, old façades to contemporary architecture and the historic buildings of the future. One beautiful example is the architecture district Céramique, built on the former site of a prominent ceramics factory. Another is the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design (MAFAD) on Herdenkingsplein, designed by Limburg architect Wiel Arets, which UNESCO has named as one of the most beautiful buildings of the 20th century. IT’S ALL IN THE MIX That intriguing blend of past and present is not only seen in the architecture, but definitely carries through into the city’s cultural offerings as well. Colourful, traditional, and uniquely Maastricht, but also mysterious, undiscovered, challenging, and sophisticated. From underground cultural treasures and the city’s signature bell towers to energetic and exciting festivals, exhibitions, and breathtaking performances – Maastricht is bursting with activities year-round, with a four-season event calendar featuring unique and distinct cultural happenings for every season. In spring, experience the artistic highlights of TEFAF; during Maastricht 8 Summer of Culture, discover the activities for young and old; taste the delights of gastronomic autumn with Château Maestricht; enjoy the winter atmosphere and fun during Magical Maastricht. VRIJTHOF square It’s been called the most beautiful square in the country. Maybe it’s because when you stand in the middle of the Vrijthof and look around, you could almost forget you’re in the Netherlands. But perhaps it’s also because it’s the cultural heart of the city. The place where the theatre is framed by intriguing museums and spectacular churches. But it’s also the place that undergoes a metamorphosis almost weekly, smoothly transitioning from each cultural season and event to the next, and the place where all the patchwork collection of colours and sounds of Carnival general opening hours come together, the beautiful backdrop for the concerts of local favourite André Rieu, and where Maastricht and the region come to enjoy the many flavours of the Preuvenemint, the Netherlands’ largest food festival. city of fashion and shopping Designer boutiques and major labels are found in abundance, punctuated by genuine one-of-a-kind shops with unique must-have fashion, lifestyle, and design items and accessories. All this only adds to the rich setting of the historic city centre. The heart of the city is rightly legendary among fashion-lovers and shopaholics, Monday: 1:00 PM-6:00 PM Tuesday: 9:30 AM-6:00 PM Wednesday: 9:30 AM-6:00 PM Thursday: 9:30 AM-6:00 PM Friday: 9:30 AM-6:00 PM Saturday: 9:30 AM-5:00/6:00 PM Sunday* Open from 12:00 noon *Except New Year’s Day, Carnival Sunday, Easter Sunday, Whit Sunday, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Another day, another cuisine If you love food, you won’t be bored in Maastricht, because you’ll find at least one restaurant for just about every type of cuisine here. From Mediterranean classics, to Asian specialities, to the delights you’ll only find here; and from 9 Michelin-starred restaurants to wine bars to good old-fashioned pubs, Maastricht has it all. The countless restaurants offer hospitality and quality for every budget. You will find Maastricht’s restaurateurs eager to showcase local products, not only in traditional local dishes, but in exciting and original ‘world cuisine’ combinations. And don’t miss the chance to visit some of the many unique dining opportunities in castles, estates, vaulted cellars, warehouses, and churches. Culinary highlights abound throughout the city. Chef Hans van Wolde of Beluga Loves You has retained his two Michelin stars for another year, and the guide has also heralded Château Neercanne and Tout à Fait as ‘très bonne cuisine’ with one star each. The taste of maastricht Broaden your horizons and try one of the typical Maastricht dishes such as Zoervleis (meat stew), Huidvleis (brawn) or the local Rommedoe cheese with its powerful odour and taste, finished off by a delicious piece of vlaai (sweet tart). take home and enjoy Look for Maastricht delicacies in the many culinary boutiques. MAASTRICHT wine Several varieties of wine grapes, including Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Müller-Thürgau, do well on the sun-drenched slopes of the Jeker Valley. Every year, Maastricht wine- c u linary & histo ry h i sto ry & cr afts Maastricht Maastricht growers produce delicious and award-winning wines. Like De Apostelhoeve, which produces six lovely white wines from Müller-Thurgau, Auxerrois, Riesling, and Pinot gris grapes, as well as two sparkling wines. The Jeker Valley is also home to the country’s second-oldest vineyard, Hoeve Nekum, the wines of which are literally fit for a king - one of them, a Hoeve Nekum Riesling, was served at the wedding of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. For the best wines, have a look in at the Netherlands’ oldest wine shop, Thiessen Wijnkoopers, which also produces wines from its own urban vineyard! The oldest city? Maastricht and Nijmegen will probably continue to debate which of the two is the Netherlands’ oldest city for centuries to come, but whatever the answer, did you know that Maastricht is home to more historic buildings than any city in the Netherlands save one? All over the city, you can still find the traces that go 10 back to Maastricht the Roman settlement, religious centre, garrison city, and early industrial powerhouse. from roman settlement to european melting pot Roman settlement The name Maastricht comes from the Latin Mosae Trajectum, ‘crossing over the Meuse,’ which refers to the bridge over the river that the Romans built here around the first century AD. University city (1976) The State University of Limburg is established in Maastricht with the goal of breathing new life into the economy of Limburg after the closure of the mines. Euregio MeuseRhine (1991) The cooperative platform established by the Dutch, German and Belgian provinces in 1976 acquires legal status in 1991 as the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. Maastricht: A city’s biography ‘Zicht op Maastricht’ is the title of the cultural biography of Maastricht compiled from stories provided by cultural and heritage institutions, academics, professional and amateur historians, and most importantly, the people of Maastricht themselves. Visit www.zichtopmaastricht.nl for the complete biography and a historical look at the city. 11 A continuum of craftsmanship You have only to stroll through Maastricht to taste it, smell it, and experience it for yourself. Here, you find yourself in a continuum of crafts, some old, some with a modern twist. Take the Historical Printing Museum, where you step back in time onto the premises of a unique printing and engraving workshop that was active around 1900. Then there’s the Steam Brewery De Keyzer, a craft brewery with equipment dating from 1900-1929, still operating in a building of industrial and archaeological significance; or the Bisschopsmolen, where the baker’s craft is taken to new heights alongside the country’s oldest still operating water mill of the Netherlands. The name ‘Dinghuis’ comes from the Dutch dingen, which means ‘to administer judgement’. Until around 1650, this building was the courthouse of Maastricht. Kleine Staat 1 Lichtenbergweg 2 Maastricht has been a ‘tourist’ destination since the Middle Ages, ever since the many pilgrims who came to the city to visit the grave of St. Servatius. More than fifty churches, chapels, monasteries, and convents take part in the annual religious processions through the city, showing that religion is still a vibrant part of Maastricht’s culture. This is also expressed in the Procession of Holy Relics, a ten-day religious event that takes place once every seven years and draws tens of thousands of visitors. The procession goes back to 1391, and the next is scheduled for 2018. Maastricht has a great many impressive churches well worth a visit, perhaps the best-known being St. Servatius Basilica and Basilica of Our Lady, both Romanesque churches. But the lesser known, such as the Cellebroeders Chapel, St. John’s church, the first Friars Minor church, and many others, are equally exquisite and worth a visit. In recent years, thanks to creative enterprise many monasteries and churches have been repurposed to save them from destruction. The fifteenthcentury Kruisherenklooster and its church is a perfect example of this. Starting in 2000, the entire complex was transformed into a luxurious designer hotel while preserving its history. Likewise, the thirteenth-century former Dominican church and monastery has also begun a new life, reopening as a breathtaking bookshop after a comprehensive restoration. For more detailed information about all the churches and virtual tours of Maastricht’s two Basilicas, visit www.zichtopmaastricht.nl. maastricht’s treasures The core of the medieval transept basilica of St. Servatius 13 dates from around AD 1000 and was built above the grave of St. Servatius. Maastricht keeps its greatest relics in the basilica’s treasury: the chest reliquary, the goblet, and the bust of St. Servatius. The collection includes precious metals, ivory, silks, paintings, and statues. The treasure room of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, part of the 11th century transept basilica of the same name, is no less splendid and magnificent, containing various sacred objects of art and fine craftsmanship: richly embroidered copes and chasubles, relics, procession banners, and religious silver objects and statues. The Gothic St. John’s church is also part of the city’s rich religious heritage. Originally a Roman Catholic parish church, it was converted into a Protestant church in 1632. Its features include a very noteworthy pulpit, beautiful gravestones and wall paintings, and the historic Binvignat organ. stu d ent c ity st ud e n t ci t y Maastricht Maastricht student city University students are an inseparable part of Maastricht life. Its streets are charming, its hotels are hip, and its businesses are booming. All this makes Wyck the perfect introduction to the rest of the city. 38 39 Get to k n ow m a ast r ic h t wyck Wyck has often been described as the up-and-coming part of Maastricht. And although it’s still a dynamic area in development, it’s already seen a real transformation from ten years ago. Today, it’s hard to imagine that there was a time that this side of the Meuse was dismissed as ‘outside Maastricht,’ and the people of Wyck were considered bumpkins. But this history has also had a defining impact, and made Wyck into the unique urban borough that it is. The many contemporary and exclusive shops, hotels, restaurants, and creative enterprises that have come here in recent years are a perfect fit with the long-standing local boutiques, fine food shops, and the locals themselves. That’s what makes Wyck one of the best places in Maastricht to live, work, and shop. On weekdays Wyck is bustling with business from the train station to the river, and on weekends it is just as jumping, with the tourists and day visitors tarrying here to ‘warm up’ for a day out on the town. Today, it’s rightly said that you haven’t seen Maastricht until you’ve seen Wyck! ———————— Shopping in Wyck is all about the boutiques you won’t find anywhere else, from designer labels to antiques. There’s Thai food, French, Italian, or even traditional Limburg cuisine. Where you go depends only on your mood. If you’re looking for a hotel, you’ll find lots of beds here in Wyck. Stay at one of the upmarket, hip, or homey hotels throughout this borough and explore the city from here. 40 9 3 14 10 5 4 Leon Martens P. 02 6 13 8 12 11 15 7 MU ST SEES 42 MUST S E E S Harrie Beaumont Hotel owner Le Salonard Bread, cheese, wine and more… Een ambachtelijke zuurdesem-bakkerij met heerlijke zelfgemaakte taartjes, brownies, caramel, koekjes, quiches en andere lekkernijen. Nowhere in Maastricht is there a place where present and past come together so powerfully as Céramique. 50 51 Get to k n ow m a ast r ic h t CÉRAMIQUE In the Céramique district, you still feel the industrial past, even though you’re standing in the newest and most modern part of the city. It’s the kind of place where you look up and keep looking, to take in the impressive architecture, even as the ground around you buzzes with culture and activity. Céramique arose in the early 1990s on the site of ‘Société Céramique,’ a ceramics factory that operated from 1850 to 1985, best known for its tableware. When the factory was offered for sale to the municipality in the late 1980s, the idea to redevelop the area as a quality residential and commercial district quickly emerged, and Government Architect Jo Coenen was engaged to develop a master plan. One of his fundamental premises was to bring something of a Mediterranean feel to this part of the city. To achieve this, he brought in a luminary architects from southern Europe for the design of the various residential and business complexes. The result is a total package of architectural high point after high point, like Mario Botta’s ‘La Fortezza,’ Alvaro Siza’s ‘Tower of Siza,’ and perhaps the crowning glory, Aldo Rossi’s Bonnefanten Museum. But despite all the forward-looking architecture, the connection to the past remains, in the street names, remnants of older buildings and tableware that turn up unexpectedly, and the exhibitions in the Bonnefanten Museum and Centre Céramique. Each and every one is a golden thread of history interwoven into the fabric of today. 17 18 16 ———————— Céramique hums with contemporary architecture, without selling short its industrial past. The shopping is exclusive, the selection refined. The history is rich, the atmosphere intimate. The Stokstraat quarter is the place to be in the heart of the city for shopping and being seen. 90 91 Get to k n ow m a ast r ic h t STOKSTRAAT quarter The collection of streets between the city centre and the Jeker quarter is known as the Stokstraat quarter. It’s that historic corner of the city between two statues, ‘De Mestreechter Geis’ and ‘Slevrouwe’. All of these streets ultimately lead to the ever-charming, intimate and romantic Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. In this part of the city, you can find the warmth and charm of a classic Maastricht pub on virtually every corner. The quarter takes its name from what may be the city’s most famous (or infamous) street. Today, Stokstraat is known as the place for the most exclusive and luxury shops in the Netherlands, but it was not always so. If there’s any street that has seen its fortunes turn over the years, it’s this one. In the Middle Ages, its reputation was dubious thanks to its many bathhouse-brothels; later, the street enjoyed a renaissance with many reputable merchants established in it, until, as the Industrial Revolution took hold and the city centre became overpopulated with wave after wave of migrants from the countryside, the street became synonymous with grinding poverty. Living conditions here became so dire that there was even talk of demolishing the entire street. The Stokstraat quarter of today is the result of a dramatic redevelopment between 1950 and 1973, which succeeded in preserving its historic character but transforming it into a fashionable address for living, shopping, and dining. 34 ———————— World-class shops, fine dining, and local colour all in one. Sphinx is a quarter in the making, the outlines of which are now slowly becoming visible. It’s also a quarter of a kind that Maastricht doesn’t have yet: young, creative, edgy, and industrial. 96 97 Get to k n ow m a ast r ic h t SPHINX & bassin ‘This is where the cultural, creative, and enterprising urban district Sphinx will arise.’ So reads the ambition behind the plans for the development of the Sphinx area. Plans focus on the place where Maastricht’s industrial revolution began. It was here that Petrus Regout built his ‘Sphinx Factory,’ the start of what grew into an enormous industry, producing bathroom fixtures, tiles, and the products that made Maastricht great. The factory operated until 2006, and since then efforts have been under way to redevelop this area as a district that fits in with the city, but as something Maastricht does not already have. That’s why this district is being designed to attract creative types, young residents, national and international students, and expatriates. It will be internationally oriented, with room for flexible space and temporary functions. Where this area is going is becoming clearer and clearer, in things like the arrival of the pop music stage in a former sawmill, and the newly opened Brandweer(kantine), with workspaces and meeting places for creative entrepreneurs. But not everything in this part of the city is new and different. The historic and picturesque river harbour ‘t Bassin, adjacent to the Sphinx area, makes a perfect buffer for the transition from the more familiar and better known Maastricht to this new part of town. 58 59 ———————— Industrial, edgy and creative. The new Maastricht is clustered closely in and around the iconic Eiffel Building, the former Sphinx factory. Romantic, intimate, and oh-so-slightly Mediterranean is the atmosphere at ‘t Bassin, on the interface between old and new. Urban, artistic, and undiscovered. 104 105 Get to k n ow m a ast r ic h t around the vrijthof square 61 Tucked away behind the church towers and just in the shadow of the Vrijthof, you would almost miss them. Almost. Because as soon as you pass the entryway to the St. Servaas Basilica, you’ll figure out that it’s worth walking on. You’ll see for yourself that Maastricht doesn’t end at the Vrijthof. Sometimes you just have to take those few extra steps. That’s when Maastricht will surprise you with just how surprising the city centre really is. The Vrijthof has a number of little streets leading into it from all directions. They include Brusselsestraat, Grote Gracht, and De Kommel. Unlike the more idyllic boulevards in most of the rest of the city, these streets evoke a feeling of the urban, the artistic, the unknown. Here, students and locals come and go: artists, designers, professionals. It’s an area that’s moving fast: new shops, start-ups, young businesses, surprising concepts. Yet at the same time, it’s bursting with historic buildings, and is still very much a place where locals want to live. In truth, you can’t really describe the streets around the Vrijthof in a few words. It’s where local, university, business, authentic, forward-looking, and surprising Maastricht all come together. ———————— A patchwork of faces: artistic students & designers attracted by the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design (MAFAD). If you didn’t know better, you’d think you’ve left the Netherlands behind. 110 111 Get to k n ow m a ast r ic h t SINT PIETER You’ll feel like you’ve crossed the border, but you’re not quite there yet. Of course, you’re aware that Maastricht’s central location in the Euregio means you can be in Belgium very quickly. But you don’t really feel it until you see how the city, and the countryside around it, is layered with a unique mix of foreign influences. With the Sint Pietersberg hill, the historic caves, the vineyards, Fort Sint Pieter, and Château Neercanne as backdrop, this part of the city has everything you need to capture that holiday feeling. Sint Pieter was its own municipality until 1920. This part of the city was always outside the city walls (and so had it the toughest in times of war). Then, it was mainly farmers who lived here; now, it’s mostly families, epicureans, and a few descendants of the inhabitants of that old Sint Pieter. Today, Sint Pieter is Maastricht’s most popular residential district, not just for its beautiful houses but because of its ideal location between city and green. And it still feels like its own town, with its own social life, and charm, even though it’s just a stone’s throw away from the city park. In fact, it has the best of both worlds: village and city. Nature and culture. ———————— The perfect place to round off your visit to Maastricht. It’s ideal for walks and cycling tours. Track down a piece of history with a visit to the Fort or the Caves.
