Babe Ruth, legendary Yankees baseball slugger, reflected in the later years of his life about the positive influence
of the Catholic Church on his life. He wrote: "On June 13, 1902, when I was seven years old, my mother and
father placed me in St. Mary's Industrial School in Baltimore, a training school for orphans, incorrigibles,
delinquents. I was listed as incorrigible, and I guess I was. It was at St. Mary's that I met and learned to love the
greatest man I've ever known. He was the father I needed. His name was Matthias. He taught me to read and
write - and he taught me the difference between right and wrong. It was Brother Matthias who made me a
pitcher." Ruth was placed into the industrial school orphanage, with the eventual death of his sick mother and
the realization by his father that the bar he owned in a rough part of the Baltimore waterfront was not an
appropriate location for the moral growth of his young son Babe. Brother Matthias, of the Xaverian Brothers,
was six-foot-six and 250 pounds. He was the assistant to a Brother Herman, who was the director of athletics at
St. Mary's. Before his religious profession, Brother Matthias had the name Martin Boutlier after his 1872
birth. He was born in a mining town in Nova Scotia called Lingan, Cape Breton. As a teacher and coach, the
good brother enforced discipline with the 800 boys at the school by being defined as a "force to be reckoned
with" and a "commanding presence that was enough to quell schoolyard mutinies without saying a word."
Brother Matthias saw a big heart and a baseball ability in Babe, while knowing when to correct the young unruly
lad. Young Babe was seen once laughing at a teammate during a game, who was struggling at the pitcher's
mound. His destiny for professional baseball, first with the Boston Red Sox as a pitcher before becoming an
outfielder for the Bronx Bombers or the Yankees, was perhaps ignited when a direct Brother Matthias said to
him: "If you can do any better, then get out there and throw the ball yourself." Ruth never forgot the goodness of
the brothers during his spectacular career. Saint Mary's closed in 1950, two years after the death of Babe
Ruth. The grounds became a high school named after Cardinal Gibbons, who confirmed Ruth in 1907. That
school closed in 2010, in these sad times of so many Church institutions demise because of clergy shortages
and indifference to organized religion plus soaring economic costs. Catholicism was a major influence on Ruth
and the other boys at the school. The typical schedule each day was : "Up at six to wash and dress for Mass and
breakfast. Classes, academic or vocational, from breakfast until ten in the morning. Recess from ten to tenthirty. School or work from ten-thirty to eleven -thirty. Dinner and free time from eleven-thirty to onethirty. School again until three-fifteen, after which there was a class in Catholic doctrine, required of Catholics
only. From then until supper at six the boys played, the small boys in the Little Yard, and the boys of fifteen or
older in the Big Yard. After supper the boys were supposed to read in bed from seven-thirty until lights out fortyfive minutes later."
The story of Babe Ruth captured my imagination again recently on a trip to the baseball hall-of-fame in historic
Cooperstown. He had major weaknesses for alcohol, food, and women as many people do. One biographer
named Leigh Montville published: "He would amaze teammates sometimes when he would appear at Mass in the
morning after a night of indulgence. Three Our Fathers, three Hail Mary's, a good Act of Contrition, a $50 bill in
the collection basket, ready to go." Ruth would support Catholic causes, such as the Knights of Columbus and
hospitals plus children orphanages. Diagnosed with terminal cancer before his death in August of 1948, he
summoned a priest (the late Monsignor John Byrne, who I knew in the seminary) for the sacraments of
communion and confession. Ruth recalled: "As I lay in bed that evening I thought to myself what a comforting
feeling to be free from fear and worries. I now could simply turn them over to God." Cardinal Francis Spellman
celebrated Ruth's funeral Mass on August 19, 1948 in Manhattan at St. Patrick's Cathedral. On his tombstone at
Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in the Westchester County setting of Hawthorne, inscribed Spellman: "May the divine
spirit that animated Babe Ruth to win the crucial game of life inspire the youth of America."
I have often gone to Section 25 of the cemetery to the Babe's burial spot. His spirit reminds me of the message
of Catholicism: it is not a museum of saints, but a hospital for sinners. May we all thank the brothers, nuns,
deacons, and priests in our lives who helped Ruth in the past and we in the present.

BIBLE STUDY
Our Bible Study course “Mary, A Biblical Walk with
the Blessed Mother” will start this Wednesday and
run thru September 27th. Classes, which begin at
7:00pm, will be held in O’Connor Hall.

Suggestions for school supplies that the children are
required to have at the start of the school year include:
primary ruled composition notebooks, wide ruled marble
composition books, sharpened pencils (non mechanical),
3x5 blank index cards, wide ruled loose leaf paper, large
rubber erasers & eraser tops, Fiskars pointed or blunt tip
scissors, glue sticks (no liquid glue), double pocket
plastic folders, 1 inch 3 ring binders and 24 pack Crayola
crayons.
FOOD PANTRY FUNDRAISER
OUR FOOD PANTRY IS SPONSORING A
RAFFLE AND BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER.
On Sunday, October 30th from 8:00am to 12:45pm
there will be a breakfast at the Newburgh Elks
Building on Washington Street in Newburgh. Also,
300 raffle tickets will be sold at $50.00 each. There
will be 5 $1,000 winners, 1 $500 winner and 2 $250
winners. Each raffle ticket purchased admits 2
people to the breakfast. Breakfast without the raffle
ticket is $10 per person. All profits go directly to the
Food Pantry.
The breakfast menu will include: eggs, pancakes,
sausage, bacon, toast, coffee and tea. Tickets will
be available soon along with additional information.

AED – CPR TRAINING CLASS
A certified instructor will be here at St Francis Church on

a training class on Automated External Defibrillator aka
AED and CPR use. The 4 hour long course will cost
$40.00. A card certificate will be issued after completing
the training class.

386 will co-host a bus trip to Mohegan Sun casino in
Uncasville, CT. Everyone is welcome. Departure is
8:30am from the Newburgh Wal Mart parking lot. Bus

Burke Memorial Golf Tournament” on Monday, August
