As of this January, 34 young people have earned New York State Regents diplomas at Newburgh Prep, and in our view, that is just the beginning! COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS When people visit and say that Newburgh Prep feels like a family, we smile, because it is precisely the warmth and support of a family that we aim to offer to each and every young person who comes to us. Our dedicated team of administrators, teachers, aides, and volunteers work every day to let our scholars know that they are valued and important. It’s this encouragement that helps our scholars keep going, even when the going gets hard, and it is why so many of them are finding academic and personal success here. Newburgh Prep was founded on the belief that each and every young person deserves an opportunity to learn and grow in an atmosphere of encouragement, support, and respect. We welcome you to join us in any way you can—visit the school, sponsor a scholar, offer an internship, donate to our scholarship fund. You will know that your efforts make a real difference in the lives of young people in Newburgh and beyond. STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Welcome to the Board of Trustees Martin Colavito Martin has worked in the substance abuse field for 35 years and works for Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange County as the Director of Prevention Services. For the past six years he has been a guiding light in the city of Newburgh and his predominant focus has been on community organization with an emphasis on substance abuse treatment and prevention. His unrelenting passion, enthusiasm, dedication and determination to improve the quality of living for the marginalized youth living in poor inner city neighborhoods is remarkably contagious. He provides a “Too Good for Drugs” and “Too Good for Violence” evidenced based curriculum to schools throughout Orange County and will be a wonderful addition to our Board. MARCUS CLARK Marcus Clark anticipates graduating this June. He was not doing well at his previous high school, had dropped out and was all set to join the Job Corps. But his friend convinced him to give NPCHS a chance—a second chance for him to get a high school diploma. So that is exactly what he did, when he enrolled at NPCHS in 2014. Marcus attributes his inspiration to succeed to his teachers. He said, “I had become lazy and let negativity get the best of me. But that all changed. The teachers are so positive and have pushed me forward and motivated me to work hard and succeed.” He added, “The staff and students are like family.” Besides his studies, Marcus works part-time at Woodbury Commons and plays basketball when he has extra time. He enjoys public speaking and hopes to go on to college.
