Patron Spotlight: Ethan Armitage From November 2015 until May of this year, Ethan Armitage, 17, a Lisle resident, worked hard to publish his own book. Olivia2 catalogs the life and habits of his hamster and shows the responsibilities he took on to care for his adorable, little pet. To compile the data needed for the book, Ethan, with the help of his father and his tutor Joan Spindler, who have been working together in the Library’s Literacy/ELD Room for several years, went online for information and checked out many books from the Lisle Library on hamsters. Unfortunately, Olivia2 passed away this past June, but Ethan is looking on the bright side, saying that, “It’s nice to have the book I wrote to look back on and remember her.” Upcoming Literacy Class Schedules ESL For You and Conversation Groups Library Staff Katharine Seelig Director IT Administrator Tatiana Weinstein Assistant Director Adult Services Director Paul Hurt Circulation Services Director Beth McQuillan Technical Services Director Will Savage Youth Services Director Alexa Hansen Newsletter Editor Newsletter published bi-monthly. In 1965, UNESCO declared September 8th annually to be International Literacy Day. Since this proclamation, libraries, schools, communities and organizations have united around the world on this day to raise awareness about problems associated with not knowing how to read, write and communicate and to increase access to education. The approach today is to blend traditional learning methods with digital tools as a valuable solution to increasing literacy skills. On Thursday, September 8th, check out the Library’s display in the entrance lobby or stop by the Literacy/English Language Development area to view our resources and find out how to volunteer to become a literacy tutor to help adults improve their English as a second language or basic skills.
