THEIR TRIP TO THE TOP
By Pat Hoffmaster
I
Pat Hoffmaster,
Breeder and Owner of the
2008 National Best Of Breed Dog
Ch Mzazi Beau De Soliel
have been in Ridgebacks for 22 years.
I count among my
mentors Dr. Winnie Ressang-Groenewegan in The
Netherlands, Nelda and
Virginia Vaughn, Danielle
Sand, Concetta Jez, Bill
and Betty Trainor and
Fred Olson. My first dog
was Ch Globe Casino’s
Shaka Mzazi. He had two
litters in South Africa.
My foundation bitch is Ch
That’s Why She Is Wish
Come True, “Meena”,
whom I imported from
The Netherlands. I have
had 2 litters from this
line and hopefully another due on Christmas
day out of Margot (Ch Mzazi’s That’s
Why), Beau’s dam and a Meena daughter. She is to be bred to Ch Nashira’s
Ciro of Anjari, JC. My kennel name
“Mzazi” means “the proud. I added it
to Shaka’s name because he was very
proud and composed. At the time I was
not thinking of having a “kennel” name
as I was quite busy showing horses. The
kennel name just evolved.
I chose to breed Margot to Oscar
(Ch Ivy League’s Academy Award) because of his correct front end assembly,
his lovely ground sweeping movement
and his sweet and stable temperament.
Whelping started first thing in the
morning around 7:00 a.m. and con-

tinued until noon with no problems or
delays. Margot was very similar to her
mother, Meena in that regard. Meena
had 14 and Margot 11 and both whelpings were without incident.
When Beau arrived, I initially
thought he was a liver. All his siblings
were quite dark red and he was very
light and different than the others. I
was not planning to keep a puppy, but
my eye was always drawn to him. Many
who came to see the litter also saw
something special and I had quite a few
friends who wanted him. Danielle and I
went over the puppies on several occasions and she insisted that he was the
“one”. His attachment to me had also
become
very evident. The rest is history.
Leslie Potts took both
Beau and his sister Coco,
Mzazi’s Coco Chanel, into
the show ring for the first
time at Boston in 2006.
Leslie had kept the final
three pick puppies for me
during my move to Rhode
Island. I had just had a
second knee operation
for cartilage damage and
was not able to show at
the time. I showed Beau
at Buck’s County in May
2007 and took Best of Opposite Sex in the Sweepstakes. That was a really
fun and exciting win. I
showed him a couple of
more times but my knee was not completely healed and I had to hand over
the job to Brian Still who finished him
very quickly. My objective was to bring
him out as a special in 2008 and show
him lightly, about once a month. I gave
that job to Joy Barbieri as Brian already
had a hound special.
As far as our expectations for the
National, I had hoped to make the
final cut and possibly get an Award of
Merit. He is still a young dog and had
only been showing about once a month.
Mr. Cole had judged him before at one
of the Cape Cod shows a year before.
I took him in and won the open class
because Brian had a
conflict. Brian took
him in for Winners
and Best of Winners.
Watching the judging
at the National, I was
able to stay calm until
the next to last cut
and then I got really
nervous. It’s hard for
me to watch – I would

rather be in the ring. I was very proud
of both Joy and Beau holding their own
against the top dogs in the country.
In addition to Beau’s win, his dam,
Margot won the Brood Bitch class. I love
Margot very much but was not able to
special her as much as I’d have liked.
In spite of that, she was in the Top
Ten bitches in 2005 with very limited
showing and I won the Bred By class
with her at the 2003 National. I am very
happy that she will be remembered as
the winner of the
Brood Bitch class
and as the mother
of a winner of the
National in 2008.
To celebrate
the day, both Margot and Beau got
steak and lots of
other treats. I had
champagne and
went out to a fabulous dinner with a
friend after floating
home to Newport
after a six hour
drive that seemed
much shorter than
that.
As for the
future, Beau will
be lightly specialed again next year as
I believe he still needs to mature both
physically and mentally. He hasn’t sired
a litter yet, but
there are plans for
a litter early next
year. I want to see
what he will produce with a bitch of
his own lines before
opening up his
book.
I am very thankful to Mr. Cole for
A Tragic Loss
T
he true spirit of the Ridgeback community was seen in the feeling
of sadness and outpouring of sympathy to the breeders and owners
of Kovu, Dimond’s Handsome Man, who tragically died during the
Gettysburg National. Kovu was bred by Sandie Gordon and owned by
Ron and Cheryl Singer.
After competing in the puppy sweeps and regular puppy class, the
livernose boy unfortunately got loose and ran off to the beautiful fields
surrounding the area. Search crews were dispatched and although
he was sighted several times, he could not be captured. Sandie,
Ron and Cheryl and others continued the search into the evening.
Unfortunately, the morning light revealed the tragic outcome that Kovu
had been hit by a car and did not survive. I am sure that all of us gave
our dogs an extra hug that day knowing that a tragedy like this can
strike at any time. Our heartfelt sympathies to Sandie and the Singer’s
for their loss.

Show Chair Comments and Observations
Celia Hoffman
2008 National Specialty Chair
F
irst I would like to say what an honor it was to
chair this year’s National Specialty. When I was
approached to do this I just came off the high of
chairing a Regional Specialty that went very well, let’s
say with a very large entry it went off without a hitch.
Of course I said I’d love to, it will be fun!! Glenn (my
husband) looked at me like I had three heads, then
when the nice board member who asked me to chair
walked away he asked if I was insane, not the first time
he’s asked that particular question, so of course I just
ignored him, as always. I did have a lot of fun, drama,
anger, and heartbreak during the planning and execution
of the show, as I’m sure others have before me.
My first and certainly not my last challenge came
when the Host Hotel owner passed away and they
brought in all new personnel, from new management to
a new chef. I could go on and mention every detail of
every problem we all faced but then you would just be
reading what most of you already know or experienced,
good and bad. So I have decided to just thank the
wonderful people who have helped make what I hope
was a memorable and exciting time for all. A couple of
the Event Chairs would like to express their gratitude
and I have given them the chance at the end of this
report.
As Show Chair I would like to personally thank the

following members for their countless
hours of work on this Show.
• Co-Chair Frank DePaulo who was
always there over the past few years
to give me advice or just help handle
the new Hotel Management during
meetings.
• Trophy Chair Judy DePaulo,
who was a monumental help during
the show, from hours of organizing
the generous donations from the
membership to helping out with trouble
shooting, seating and Ways and Means.
• Hospitality Chair Jen
Lazowski, for all the hours of work Jen
put in before and during the show. Jen
went to meetings, organized menus and
put in more hours then I can count.
• Vendor Chair Lisa Hoffman who
did an outstanding job getting us such a
great variety of vendors this year. Lisa
also helped us at the Ways and Means
table when she wasn’t juggling vendors
or showing dogs.
• Sandie Gordon for chairing this
year’s Top 20, from designing the
catalog to sending out invitations this
was a huge undertaking and we are
grateful. Also to Sue
Ralston who stepped
in for Sandie when
Sandie needed help and
support.
• Bonnie Louden
who continues to take
care of all the ways and
means demands. Bonnie
was there from the first
always willing to help.
• John Arvin, or as I came to call
him “Johnny on the Spot” for his many
hours of tireless work making sure the
grounds were running smoothly. The
All Star and Host Hotel told us with
all the dozens of dog shows they have
hosted our grounds committee was by
far the best. This is due to John and his
helpers’ tireless work along with the
rest of the members who took pride in
always cleaning up after themselves
and their dogs.
• Jim Fredericks helped with
the ring set-up and kept me laughing
through some tough times before,
during and after the show.
• Chief Ring Steward Priscilla
Gabosh who as always ran the ring
with perfection with the help of Nicole
Deutschman, Mae Magdic and Suzanne
Eberling. Bonnie Loudon also assisted
with the Veteran Sweeps.
• Sue Ohanesian, for taking in
orders and providing spread sheets to
all the Chairs. This is a tedious job that
Sue handled in a timely, professional
and always courteous manner.
• Jane Missimer and Chris Abraham
for being there whenever I needed
them. Jane was a wealth of information
and helped me though
very difficult times.
• Denise Flaim for
bringing in Pat Trotter to
speak at our Health and
Genetics Seminar and
doing a great job getting
the room set up in record
time for Veteran Sweeps.
• Danielle Sand and
Sue Ralston for bringing
in Dr. Keller to speak for
Education.
• Doreen Kent for Judges
Hospitality, Doreen was always just a
phone call away willing to help.
• Eileen Bailey for Chairing our
Health Screening and providing us with
the Cerf Clinic. Eileen came to us in
the final hours and the work she did is
much appreciated. She also provided
us with the DM speakers and for that
alone we applauded her. Also to Sue
Ralston, Danielle Sand and Nancy
Rich for stepping in to provide the
Thyroid Clinic. I know this was greatly
appreciated by not only me but so
many who look forward to having these
tests done at one venue.
• Lisa Serad for running the CGC
and TDI clinics along with help from Ann
Ventresca-Snyder and Joyce Lazell. Lisa
made a special trip to Gettysburg just
to run these clinics.
Also providing support as friends
and tireless workers during the show,
Betsy Shuster, Betty Salabsky, Christine
Kitsch who along with Jen Lazowski and
Judy DePaulo seemed to be working
non-stop, Louann Isenberg (Donut
runner and Spotlight girl) Teri Serin and
Nicole Perez. Nicole was priceless as my
dog walker. Bonita & Bob Snodgrass and
their beautiful Granddaughter Ceattle
Marie Snodgrass, age 4, for helping
clean up on Saturday. They along with
Cammay Jones and Mary Lynne Elliott
were at the All Star Saturday helping
with clean up.
• Rally Chair Cindy Ackerman,
Obedience Chair Barbara Carr, Triathlon
Chair Julie Cramer, Endurance Chairs
Cathy Acosta and Jean Spengel. I would
also like to thank Claire Gelok who
answered so many of my questions

when it came to the Endurance trial.
These events were very successful due
to the effort of all these ladies.
I would like to especially thank
Performance Chair Ann VentrescaSnyder who made the all breed Agility
dream a reality. This was a huge
undertaking that was done while
organizing the other performance
events. Ann, along with all her
helpers, deserves a standing ovation
for a job well done.
• Lure Coursing Chair Ian Davies
and our Trial Secretary Bill Kitsch. I
could not attend Coursing this year.
We stayed behind to take care of the
hotel and All Star but I would like to
thank all of those who helped make
this a success.
• Theresa Lyons who did the
beautiful job with this year’s Catalog
Advertising. I was very grateful when
she offered her help knowing full well
she would make us all look good, and
of course she again out did herself.
• Nicole
Severino who
at her own
expense along
with sponsors
produced the
lovely blankets
given to
winners. She
also transported
the wine that
Sandie Gordon
helped procure
from a very
prominent
vineyard, again
at her expense.
• Roger
Kutchenrider who donated the bags
given out with the welcome packs and
his ways and means items that were
some of the best I’ve ever seen.
I would like to thank our member
judges, Bill Kent for judging our
Veteran and Puppy Sweeps. His years
of experience, dedication and love
for our breed was very apparent and
greatly appreciated by all. Our Top
Twenty Breeder Judge Danielle Sand,
Carlee Davies for judging this year’s
Conformation in Triathlon. Rosann
Sexton, Jen Lazowski and Judy DePaulo
for judging Best Ridge. Also thanks to
our conformation and performance
judges.
Last, but most certainly not least,
I would like to Thank Second Co-Chair,
my husband, Glenn Hoffman. Right from
the beginning Glenn’s help has been
immeasurable. From helping plan this
event, to stewarding to grounds clean
I realize this is just one very large
thank you letter but the fact is without
these people I could not have hosted
this Specialty and I am in awe of the
work and dedication put into this.
To all of you who whispered words
of encouragement and praise before
during and after this Specialty, I am
forever grateful. You cannot imagine
how much that helped keep everyone of
us going. We can only hope we made
this Show as special to all of you as
it was to us.

those I missed my deepest gratitude.

have never even been to an agility trial.
In about 15 minutes they were course

that are willing to help do anything for
the benefit of the our club. Obedience

also made an extra effort to celebrate
our obedience judges’ birthday. We had
a great entry and many qualifying RRs.
Cindy Ackerman did a terrific job chairing
the Rally at nationals. There is something
to be said for the comradery shared
at the performance events. Watching
everyone cheer each other on hoping for
that qualifying score was priceless and
something I will not forget.

Got Stamina? try the endurance TRIAL!
O
n Monday morning of the
Specialty Week, staff and
competitors gathered at 6:30
am for the Fifth Rhodesian Ridgeback
Endurance Trial. Of the eleven dogs who
started the competition, all completed
the course and received their ET
Certificate. Included in this year’s event
was the oldest dog to ever enter and
complete the trial, 9-year-old Erik. The
course was northwest of Gettysburg
and followed a hiking/running path
built on the path of an old, abandoned
railway. Winding through rolling fields
and pastures, it was probably the most
beautiful course that we have had to
date. Weather cooperated to make it a
great morning.
For those of you who are not
familiar with the ET, it is not a race
where one dog is declared the winner.
It is a personal challenge to each
individual dog (and their handlers who
run or bike with them) to see if they
can complete a 12 mile course in a
specified time while remaining in good
physical and mental condition.
The race is comprised of 3 four
mile segments with short breaks in
between. All dogs are examined by
a veterinarian prior to the event.
Parameters such as temperature,
respiratory rate
and heart rate
are measured.

PUPPY AND VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES

W
hat a wonderful, lifetime
Ridgeback experience it was
for me to judge the Sweeps &
Veteran Sweeps at the 2008 “Field of
Honor” Specialty. Gettysburg is one of
my favorite tourist spots. Being able to
judge there was doubly pleasurable.
My goals in judging the Sweeps was
to give EVERY dog the benefit of the
time allotted by AKC for examination
and movement. I worked on developing a ring pattern and procedure that
would not only keep me on time but
would also help the exhibitors and
spectators see what my priorities are.
It’s important for a Sweeps judge to
be patient, kind and respectful to all
exhibitors, especially newbie pups and
handlers so as to make it a positive
experience and encourage their future
exhibition. I also strove to be consistent
in the style of dog in my placements.
I can’t remember when/if 18
–24 month old dogs and bitches were
included in a Sweepstakes. The 2007
Specialty was 17 months earlier, and
a lot of dogs would have missed being
able to participate in a Sweepstakes if
this class was not included this year. I
Best Opposite Sex to Best in Sweeps - Dimond’s Precious Gem, JC
Owner: Sandra Gordon (bitch)
agree that all dogs should be allowed to
participate.
SUGGESTION for future Specialties where 18 – 24 month classes are
included. Split it into two Sweepstakes
– Puppy Sweeps (6 – 12 mos.) and
Sweeps (12 - 24 mos.). Award BOB &
BOS to both. Just an idea and something for the board and future Show
Chairs to consider.
Sweeps Dogs – 6 – 9 mos.
1st – maturing nicely, sound mover,
good feet, handsome head
2nd - same as 1st place, tough deciding between the two
3rd – good looking puppy, but not as
together as my first 2 placements
4th – nice pup, will take time to
mature – not that that’s a bad thing.
Several rather short ridges in this
class
Sweeps Dogs 9 – 12 mos.
1st - Handsome head, nice mover,
good feet, nice ridge
2nd - Similar to 1st place dog; again
was hard to decide between the two
3rd – Nice front, nice tail set
4th – Very nice looking dog. Needs
time to mature.
Sweeps Dogs 12 – 15 mos.
1st – Nice head, good feet, nice outline, good mover
2nd – Nice head and expression, dark
eyes
3rd - Liver nose with good coloration,
sound mover
4th – Handsome young dog, good
bone and substance
Sweeps Dogs 15 – 18 mos.
1st – nice feet, good tail set, dark
eyes, good mover, nice bone and substance for age.
2nd – clear coat, dark eyes. Good
expression. Not as much substance as
1st place dog, good feet
3rd – liver nose, VERY good ridge,
nice feet, good tail set
4th – dark red, dark eyes, nice ear
and tail set, ridge a little short
There were several dogs in this class
that were rather fine and/or with decidedly short ridges.
continued on page 69
Sweeps Dog – 18 –24 mos.
1st -This dog was my BOB in Sweeps.
Probably a bit taller than the standard,
but all the pieces fit together. Balanced
on the stack and a beautiful mover.
Handsome head, wonderful personality.
He sold me. Would be proud to own him.
Congratulations!
2nd - Close in style to 1st place dog
but not as tall. Still needs time to fully
mature. Handsome dog. Another tough
decision.
3rd - A very nice dog. Sound and
nicely presented. Ridge a bit short.
4th - A bit more white than standard
calls for; a little kink at the tip of his
tail. Nice outline, good mover.
Sweeps Bitch – 6 – 9 mos.
1st Good feet and ridge. Eyes a bit
light. But good size and substance for
age. Very sound
2nd Really nice bitch. A bit more
white on one foot than desirable. Predict she’ll be a lovely grown-up female.
3rd Solid color, dark eyes, good ear
set, nice tail set, nice ridge.
4th Finer, but nicely put together.
Good ear set. Nice expression.
Nice looking dogs in this class, but a
lot of short ridges.
Sweeps Bitch 9 – 12 mos.
1st What a nice 9 – 12 bitch should
look like. Lovely head, nice dark eyes.
BOS to Best Veteran in Sweeps - Ch. Umtali’s Amarillo By Morning
Owners: Barbara Sohayda & Nancy Rich
Personality and soundness. I can see
her growing up to be a beautiful adult
female. Tough for me to decide between
her and my 18 – 24 mo. Bitch for BOS.
2nd Mature for age – strong rear muscling. Dark eyes. Good ridge, feet and
tail set
3rd Smallish for age group, dark eyes,
good feet, ear and tail set. Nice solid,
clear coat. Nice looking bitch
4th Feet a bit down. Nice ridge and
tail set. Alert, personable.
Sweeps Bitch 12 – 15 mos.
1st Nice color liver nose. Good ridge,
good feet, nice dark amber eyes, alert,
happy dog. Very sound.
2nd Substantial. Good thigh muscling.
Good ear and tail set.
3rd Vying for 2nd place. On the final
go-around, gait was off. Nice looking
bitch on the stack.
4th Good ridge, nice feet. Probably a
slow maturer, but predict she will be a
nice adult bitch.
Sweeps Bitch 15 – 18 mos.
1st Substantial, nice head, feet and
tail. Lovely on the move.
2nd Good ridge, a bit more black ticking in coat than I prefer. Nice outline on
the stack.
3rd Good ridge, nice feet and tail set.
Very expressive. Pretty bitch.
4th Very expressive, nice feet, good
muscling.
Again – a lot of short ridges in the
class.
Sweeps Bitch – 18 –24 mos.
1st My BOS in Sweeps. A lovely bitch
– true to the standard. GOOD front. A
real show girl. I learned afterward that
she was already a finished champion.
Congratulations!
2nd Heavier head, nice feet, good
expression, dark eyes, nice tail set
3rd Right amount of black on face,
good feet, nice ridge
4th Dark eyes, nice ridge,, good tail
set
And yet another class with a LOT of
short ridges.
W
hat a pleasure it was for me to
judge the Veteran Sweeps, but
it was an extremely difficult
task - heavy hitter entrants, still with so
much quality. I remember a lot of these
dogs when they were youngsters. I was
delighted to see the vast majority of
them looking and acting like they had
drunk from the Fountain of Youth. They
didn’t forget, and they were exuberant
to be back in the limelight. The sparkle
in their eyes overtook what clouding has
come with age.

OVERALL EVALUATION
T
he standard defines type – the
closer the dog meets the standard, the typier that dog is. The
Ridgebacks I evaluated were consistent
with the standard in most all respects.
1st place - 7-9 veteran bitch
Ch. Rhodeside Dimond Mwinda
1st place - 9-11 veteran bitch
Ch. Summut Lake Effect Star
Heads are improving with the
muzzles getting more length making
the head more balanced. Ear set was
good. Some light eyes. I didn’t see any
bad bites. Fronts, and fronts compared
to rear angulation are improving. Good
feet and bone. Most dogs had good
substance for their age category. Hocks
were short, strong and straight. There
were just a few kink tails. A few dogs
had a bit more white than the standard
states, but I didn’t view it as a problem. Nice tail sets. Kudos to breeders
for excellent temperament and early
training. Movement, for the most
part, was relatively good. However,
some handlers need to concentrate on
running in a straight line. Hindsight is
20/20, but I should have asked Rau to
double mat the part of the ring that
split the ring in half. Handlers were
having a difficult time keeping them-

selves and their dogs on a single width
of matting – especially when it came to
negotiating the corners.
I wished I had more placement
ribbons to hand out in some of the
classes.
HOWEVER, there is a red flag
blowing in the wind. If you haven’t
signaled my punch on it by reading
my critique, short ridges are close to
becoming the norm, rather than the
exception.
Our standard states: “The ridge
shall start immediately behind the
shoulders and continue to a point between the prominence of the hips.”
The ridge counts for 20 points
– 1/5 of the dog. The name of the
breed is Ridgeback. The ridge is its
“hallmark.” Its description in our standard leaves no room for doubt as to its

size, placement and shape. Best Ridge
Awards in Specialty Best Ridge contests
are coveted.
It’s seldom anymore that a ridge
comes between the prominence of the
hips. However, I found a lot of ridges
that weren’t just one or two inches
short of that mark; rather, I’m talking
about ridges that were 3” – 5” short.
The breed has improved in virtually
every other respect, but the length of
the ridge is alarmingly lessening.
There’s a dog under that ridge, and
that dog has to meet the other increments of our standard, as well. I realize
that, and I’d never put up a mediocre
dog just because it has a good ridge.
Thankfully, I did not have to put up a
flagrantly short ridge for 1st place in
any of my classes. I don’t know how
long that choice will continue for future
judges if the length of the ridge continues to lessen. But, then, I am not so arrogant to think that other judges place
the same importance on the quality of
the ridge as I do.
Thank you to those who voted for
me and brought your dogs to me for
evaluation. It is greatly appreciated.
What an honor! I wish you and your
wonderful Ridgebacks success, good
health and long life.

T
he National at Gettysburg was
exciting and fun to do. I would
like to thank all the participants
who entered the event. Celia Hoffman
and her committee did a great job in
putting this together. The Stewards
she selected were outstanding, highly
efficient and innovative. Without their
efforts the ring procedure would not
have been so smooth. The facility was
great to work in and well illuminated.
The weather was late summer or early
autumn, and everything was very green.
Tuesday was day one for the male
classes. This includes 6-9 through open
with 3 classes of veterans, field champions and altered. I was pleased with
the quality and depth in several of the
classes.
Veteran 7-9 years was won by Ch
Westwood Captain in Command. A nice
dog with bone matching his body size.
He had a level top line and moved well.
Well balanced.
Veteran 9-11 years was won by Ch
Spring Valley’s Great Gatsby. An excellent animal with balance, good reach/
drive, and level top line. Not a large
male, but well put together. Even at 10
years of age, this dog ended the week

fighting it out for the Breed win with
two other entries. On this day he was
all together and showed outstandingly.
Veteran 11 and over was won by FC
Kushinda TT King Khou-Dee, JC, SC, MC.
Considering the age, he looked good.
He still had a level top line and moved
well around the ring. He needed more
head and body, but age may have taken
its toll here.
6-9 month puppy dog class was
won by Tobi’s Walk the Lion. I liked this
youngster. The make and shape was
appealing. He had a strong headpiece
for a young dog, level top line, bone fit
the body, and was balanced. He carried
himself well around the ring.
9-12 month puppy dog winner was
Riveroads Ridgerunr Hammer of Thor.
Another promising animal. He had well
filled muzzle and back skull. I thought
that this head was quite good for a
young dog. The bone fit his body. I
thought that he could have used himself
better in the rear in profile. Also, he
struck me as a little long for his height.
12-18 puppy dog class was won
by Paradigm’s Red Talisman. This was
a very competitive class with good
quality and depth. Talisman was a nice
size and length. He carried his top line
well standing or moving. He moved out
very well. The neck to shoulders was
clean and flowing. Headpiece was solid
with a good expression. Talisman was a
contender for Winners Dog later in the
day. I was pleased to award him Reserve
Winners Dog.
Bred by Exhibitor winner went to
Beau Bijou’s Kwai Baby. This was another tough class where quality abounded.
This animal caught my eye both when
he stood and moved. The head, muzzle
and expression were pleasing to me.
The neck flowed into the back smoothly. Top line was solid both standing and
in motion. Body, bone with compact
feet were all there. He is still a young
dog, so will mature even more. This was
my Winners Dog later in the day.
American Bred Class was won by
Kimani’s Something To Talk About. This
was a challenging class as the entries
had various virtues, but also issues. Talk
About did rise to the top of the class,
but narrowly over the 2nd place dog.
He had a good top line and moved well.
I would have liked more dog. The 2nd
place Yandisa My Jonas O’Brenkellem

had a better body, but did not match
the movement of Talk About.
Open Dog went to Tubila’s Earth
Shatter’n Kaboom. This was a large
class, which had a good range of quality. It was hard fought. My winner was
a large boned dog with a larger body.
The headpiece fit his body. I liked
his top line and he moved well with
good reach and drive. He had balance
and style. I considered him both for
winners and reserve. He lost to the
2 winners because of the front being
just slightly off when standing.
Field Champion was won by a very
good dog DC Spring Valley’s Pele, TD,
SC, HIC. I was impressed with this dog.
He had movement, top line, head and
presence. Later in the week, I tried
very hard to find a place for him in the
Award of Merit group. He could have
used more depth of chest, but beyond
that he was nice.
Hunting Dogs was won by Ushamwari’s SV Mwangwi Afrika, RA, NA,
SXC, NAJ. Heavy boned dog, with a
nice headpiece. Back line was satisfactory. Needed to move out more.
Wednesday brought another great
day with many bitches.
Veteran 7-9 was won by Ch Simbali’s Kiss This. Balanced of moderate
size. Moved with good authority around
the ring. Needed more head.
Veteran 9-11 winner was Mach2
Kennebec’s Alchemy Alliance CDX, JC,
NAF. A striking bitch with a good body,
headpiece and top line. She moved
around with good reach and drive.
Not a big bitch, but moderate sized.
Alliance was under consideration for
BOS later in the week. She is a quality
bitch.
Veteran 11 and over was won by Ch
Cedarpoints Lady of the Lake. For her
age she looked good. She demonstrated
good movement. Needed more body,
but age may have come into play here.
6-9 puppy bitch winner was
Excaliber’s Vision in the Night. Very
nice young bitch who needs maturity.
The bone matched her body and she
had tight feet. Nice top line. I thought
she was promising.
Best of Winners, Winners Dog
Beau Bijou’s Kwai Baby
Winners Bitch
Paradigm’s Fire and Brimstone
9-12 puppy bitch was won by
Spring Valley’s Lady Jane. I like her
overall balance. She carried her top
line well and moved with authority.
For a young bitch, she had a pleasing
headpiece. Jane does need a lot more
maturity.
12 –18 puppy bitch winner was
Beau Bijou’s Little Special. I thought
that is was a lovely young bitch with
good balance. Her bone fits her body.
She moves out carrying her top line
well. She has a nice chest extension
with clean straight front legs. I was
impressed. She became my reserve
winners Bitch.
Bred By Exhibitor was won by
Dimond Spring Valley’s Champagne
Wishes. Nice class. The winner was
typy with good balance. She moved
well and carried her top line. Good
bone and feet.
American Bred Bitch winner was
Vyrtuoua Emma Good Thief. Balanced
bitch with good movement. Top line
level. Bone fit the body.
Open bitch was won by Paradigm’s
Reserve Winners Dog
Paradigm’s Red Talisman
boiled down to 3 worthy males vying
for the Breed crown. Two were mature
younger dogs while the 3rd was from
the 9-11 Veteran class. All three showed
their merit repeatedly, and in the end
only small items tipped the balance.
The Best of Breed was won by Ch
Mzazi’s Beau De Soleil. This was a solid
dog very well balanced with appropriate
bone and compact feet. He stood correctly in the front and had corresponding angulation in the rear. The skull and
muzzle was strong with a good expression. The neck flowed cleanly into the
top line. The top line was level both in
motion and standing. This dog did not
have quite the extreme reach and drive
as one of his challengers, but his reach
and drive was excellent. The dog flowed
around the ring and moved easily when
cornering. His height to length of body
was right on. I was pleased to award
this animal BOB.
Best of Winners was won by Beau
Bijou’s Kwai Baby. He was discussed
earlier.
Best Opposite was won by Ch
Nashira’s Private Collection. I felt that
this bitch had solid virtues. Starting
with the front of the animal: she had a
strong headpiece with a good expression. Flowed around the ring carrying a
level top line. Nice bone and compact
feet. I would have liked a little shorter
body length, but her virtues overrode
that one issue. Quality bitch.
Thank you all for a great time.

expression. Not a large bitch but is
muscular and athletic looking. Clean
top line both standing and moving. She
moved well for her size. Very balance
with good compact feet, well bodied
and a straight clean front. This was my
Winners Bitch.
Hunting Bitch was won by Ch Rare
Earth’s History in Motion JC. A balanced bitch with good movement. Top
line correct.
Field Champion winners was DC
Ridgelea Yerchanig Zartouhi, SC. A
finer bodied bitch but still well proportioned. Moved with good reach and
drive. Needed more head and the ears
were not her strong point.
Day 3 was the grand finale for
the event. Not only were there a
large number of breed exhibits, but
a substantional entry in brace, stud

“The week started well with Lennox getting a 2nd in Sweeps. Later in
the day, I was even more excited to
hear that Lennox, at just 16 months
of age, had qualified in Novice Obedience and Tyson had taken a second
in the same Obedience class. Not bad
considering the fact that I really have
been too busy to work with either dog
and Diane Engelking never worked with
Lennox before in the obedience ring.
Having Tyson’s sister Dinah take Winners

the week.

“The 2008 specialty was a thrilling experience for us as breeders – in
Obedience, Sweeps, 12-18 month and
Open classes, Brood Bitch and in the
Breed ring. It is exciting that Dinah
won Winners Bitch. Additionally, it is a
privilege that both Dinah and her littermate, Tyson, received Award of Merits.
It was fun to watch Tyson and Diane
in the Top 20 competition and quite a
tribute to the team to win 2nd place in
obedience. We are also honored with
Rowan’s Reserve Winners Dog win, as
well as the placements of Gus and Eva
in the Sweeps and 12-18 month classes.
Lennox, littermate to Rowan, Gus and
Eva, also placed in his Sweeps class
and attained his first leg towards his
CD! To cap the week off for us, it was
a pleasure to see Ella – dam of all the
above-mentioned winners – take 3rd
place in the Brood Bitch class. Thank
you to all the friends and mentors who
contributed and helped make this a

with a cute bouncy puppy, Luna. Later
I decided I would like to give up showing horses and focus on showing dogs
but Luna wasn’t the one to show, so I
began my search once again. I studied
RRCUS’s website for bloodlines and a
specific type that had been doing well
over the years and then sent out a
generic letter to all the breeders who
applied. I was quickly directed to a
new breeder in Washington State that
had exactly what we were looking for.
“Later that month we found ourselves at the door of Isabela and Eric
Mailman’s home, with their first litter
out of their outstanding bitch, CH
Applegarth’s Great Expectation and by
CH Tigris Nothing But Net From Masai.
Isabela and I had been corresponding in regards to what our needs were
going to be in a puppy, and there was
only one pup that fit the bill – Ty. In
the past two years we have constantly
been taken to new heights with Ty and
hope to do even better in the years to
come. She has proven herself an outstanding show dog, wonderful companion and enough of a goofball to keep us
in stitches on a daily basis!”

he 2008 RRCUS National Specialty
Rally trial was a successful event.
Mr. Darryl Warren was the judge.
He was efficient and enjoyed our Ridgebacks. He even stayed after the trial
to shop and watch conformation. We
had 36 Rally entries and only two teams
were absent. Of the 34 competing dog/
handler teams, ALL but three received
qualifying scores! There were several
new titles awarded. Perfect scores of
100 points were awarded to Claire Gelok
with Pele and Janice Schindler–Horvat
with Moka!
Many thanks to Anna Marie Vantresca-Snyder, the 2008 show committee’s
trusty Performance Chair. She was there
for the duration just in case we needed
anything and making sure all the ribbons
and trophies were in order. A heartfelt
thank you to three wonderful ring stewards: Barbara Busch, Betty Salabsky and
RRCUS President Chris Abraham. Whoever exclaimed “many hands make light
work” was right! All the help made the
trial enjoyable for everyone. As always,
I encourage all Ridgeback owners to give
Rally a try. It truly is a lot of fun. The
worst that could happen is you get a dog
who knows how to behave!

TRIATHLON
WINNING THE TRIATHLON
It Takes A Bit Of “Savvy”
by Tina Moodhart
S
avvy is my fourth Ridgeback and is
the only one of the four we have
even taught to sit. When we started in Ridgebacks we were interested
exclusively in conformation and it was
a round about way Savvy and I began
to dabble in performance events and to
win 3 RRCUS medallions at national’s.
Savvy was a reserved puppy and
never had much attitude in the show
ring. I signed up for an obedience class
to help her gain confidence. Our obedience instructor was very militant and
forbade food rewards. I asked for a refund after the first class and the owner
of the training club offered to substitute
private lessons. During our lessons she
would give me tips on foot work, etc.,
just in case we ever wanted to compete.
I just smiled condescendingly at her.
My interest in obedience began
at the 2003 National when I saw Kerry
Williams win a placement in Novice
obedience with Savvy’s aunt Judy. I was
in awe that a ridgeback could do all of
those exercises. After taking competition classes out our local dog club, Savvy
and I received our first leg in Novice
A obedience with a score of 170 and a
4th place at the Texas Nationals. I was
thrilled. We also took classes and competed in the new event, Rally, when it
was introduced.
Savvy is a natural courser, we never
trained or road worked her. The first
time she ran she showed absolutely no
interest until the lure began to move
when she gave out a huge scream and
was off. Savvy finished her field Cham-
pionship by winning BOB at the
2005 National in a real nail biter
that required several run offs.
After that win, Savvy’s obedience training took a back seat
to her coursing career. Savvy
was #3 in coursing in 2005 and
has won 4 BIF’s in her coursing
career.
Our latest endeavor is agility, which I find to be the most
challenging and rewarding of
the performance events. Our
progress in agility competition is
directly related to the improvement of my handling skills and
we will be making our first attempt in the excellent ring our
next trial.
Savvy has demonstrated her
all around performance ability
by winning the Triathlon at the
2006 National and after a maternity leave in 2007, repeating

veteran age, I hope to obtain
her excellent agility titles
and to train for higher levels
in obedience and rally. I have
also started training my next
performance dog, Savvy’s
daughter, McKenzie. McKenzie
is also a natural courser and
will benefit from the skills I
have learned working with
Savvy over the years. •

to have been able to examine
so many correct Ridgebacks and
observe their powerful movement. Rhodesian Ridgebacks
have always been a special
breed for me and it is reassuring to know that the fancy is
continuing to work diligently to
preserve and improve the breed
where needed.
I thought the competition
was well organized and many
kudos to the efficient stewards
for keeping us “on time” and
well organized. Some logistical recommendations I would
suggest the club to consider
would be to reduce the number
of “down and backs” on each
dog from “three” to “two”
and, if possible, try and start the event
earlier. In this way, time could be saved
which could allow for a short break
to be taken after judging to allow for
counting votes followed by actually
recognizing the winner that evening at
the event.
I would like to thank the club for
their hospitality and for allowing me to
be a part of such a special evening.
