Date
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! Wagsworth is happy to announce the return of this
fun opportunity for puppies and their owners! Join us Saturday afternoons in January and
February from 1-2pm for a free Puppy Play Date. This is the perfect chance to socialize
your young furry friend with other puppies and people.
We welcome all vaccinated dogs under one year old
(please bring current vaccination records with you).
Dogs over 7 months old must be spayed or neutered.
Puppy Training: The Earlier the Better!
It used to be commonly accepted that owners should wait until their puppy is six months old
before starting training, but the optimal time to start a pup’s education is actually at about ten
weeks of age. By starting training early, your puppy will be learning what to do rather than
spending time unlearning bad habits you want them not to do. You should start researching
training classes even before you bring your new puppy home. If the trainer will let you, sit in
on a class or two and take note of the trainer’s methods and philosophy. Avoid “old-school”
trainers who use physical corrections or loud verbal reprimands. Be assertive; don’t ever let
anyone do, or make you do, anything to your puppy that you’re not comfortable with.
Wagsworth’s Puppy Pre-School and Perfect Puppy classes are
a fun way to ease your puppy into obedience training, and they’re
taught by our seasoned trainer Gretchen Knittel. Her classes focus
on building your pup’s confidence through positive reinforcement
and socialization. New classes start January 14!
INDOOR SWIMMING
The cold weather might mean less outdoor physical activity for your dog, but we have the
perfect solution: swim sessions in Wagsworth Manor’s indoor, heated, salt-based swimming
pool. Whether your dog is a seasoned swimming pro, or just likes doing a leisurely
doggie-paddle, swimming is a great low-impact exercise that
is beneficial for dogs of all ages and breeds.
We offer both group and individual swim sessions, and you
can request a swim for your dog with your next boarding or
day camp visit. Give it a try - it’s a splashin’ good time!

FUN FACTS ABOUT CATS
Cats are said to wash behind their ears before it rains, possibly
because of the drop in air pressure.
The oldest cat ever recorded was Creme Puff - who lived an
amazing 38 years!
The ancient Egyptians not only loved their cats, but actually
worshipped them! When a beloved feline died, family members
would shave off their eyebrows as a sign of mourning.
Although cats are known to be fish eaters, their original natural
habitat is the desert. It’s believed that their connection with fish started during WWII when
meat was scarce and expensive, so cat owners gave their feline companions fish instead.
Valentine Catnip Cookies for Cats
1 cup of all-purpose
flour
1/4 cup of whole wheat
flour
2 T of wheat germ
2-4 T of Catnip
1/3 cup of milk
2 T of vegetable oil
1 T of molasses
1 egg
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine the dry ingredients in
a bowl. Combine the wet ingredients in a bowl. Mix the wet &
dry ingredients together and work into a dough. Lightly flour
work surface. Remove some dough & use a rolling pin to flatten
to between 1/8 and 1/4 inch. Cut into 1-inch squares. Place on
a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake 10-15 min, or until crisp
& lightly browned. Makes about 50 medium-sized cat treats.
Once cooled, remove & place the cookies into several small
freezer bags. To extend the life of these treats, store in freezer.
Thawed, store in fridge for up to 2 weeks.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT:
Winter Safety for Dogs
Exercising outdoors in the winter can pose certain risks.
Keep your dog safe by observing these common sense,
cold-weather guidelines:
• Dogs, like people, are susceptible to hypothermia.
Hypothermic dogs should be warmed slowly. You can
do this by wrapping him in warm blankets or placing
towel-wrapped bottles filled with warm water against his armpit and groin.
• Be aware of frostbite, especially in vulnerable areas such as ears, paw pads, tail and
groin. Signs of frostbite include flushed and reddened tissues, white or grayish tissues,
scaliness and possible shedding of dead skin, and signs of shock.
• Be sure your dog is wearing proper ID and/or a microchip identifier in case he gets
separated from you outside.
• When you get home from a walk on frozen streets and sidewalks, rinse your dog’s paw
pads to remove salt and any other de-icing agents he may have walked on. You can also
apply a salve before and after you go out in the cold with your dog.
A great product which we sell at Wagsworth Manor is Musher’s Secret,
a 100% all-natural, non-toxic wax that protects your dog’s paw pads
from the harsh elements of winter (and it’s also great for protecting
them from hot sand and pavement in the summer).

DOG BATHER EXTRAORDINAIRE:
Phyllis
Hi, my name is
Phyllis and I am
the head bather at
Wagsworth Manor.
I’ve been working
with
pets
and
veterinarians for over twenty years, and I
came to Wagsworth Manor 3 years ago.
I find pleasure and take great pride and
satisfaction in my work. I know that a nice
warm bath and a shampoo massage relaxes
and soothes our guests and a blow dry and
good brush out will leave them looking
and feeling their very best. I’ll often talk or
sing to them as I work to help them relax.
This also helps our younger guests get
acclimated to being touched and handled even having their nails trimmed (a must for
healthy nails). Schedule a bath today, and
I’ll have them looking their very best this
afternoon!
