SPOTS & AROOS Fall/Winter 2013 Jay Leno & Jimmy Kimmel Rowdy & Scooter “Here they are sitting for a treat. So far it is the only command they know but we are working on it. They sure are a handful but doing good having a playmate. Rowdy is still very vocal and Scooter is more laid back. “– Diane M Ellen Degeneres David Letterman Five of the six cruelty case pups born in the shelter last year have wonderful loving homes! Below are pictures and updates from their new families! Dave “He is smart, big, cute & curious. And is now a puppy obedience grad! He has won our hearts from "near & far" (OK to IRAQ)! “ ~Whitney P (whose husband is in Iraq) Craig Ferguson And what the last little puppy needs to have a wonderful new home as well! Cinnamon “Forever home means spoiled rotten Buddy “He is doing great. Still very feisty and full with long walks and a cow trachea reward for going all day with no accidents. I'll chase a ball and cuddle my people for hours. Thank you OKBR for finding my forever people!” ~ Cindy G of energy! We have so enjoyed him! He drives Snoopy nuts and definitely keeps him on his toes, but you can tell Snoopy likes him if for no other reason than to play tug a war constantly!” --Katie & David S PAGE 2 SPOTS & AROOS The Last Puppy’s Beautiful First Christmas Born in darkness, blind, deaf and oblivious to the noisy, scary chaos of the city shelter, the litter of newborn puppies nurse contently on their very young, 'cruelty case' mother, Fancy. Once rescued, they quickly found their little Beagle/Doxie voices, and were cleverly named after five famous talk show hosts; Dave, Jay, Jimmy, Ellen and Oprah! When weaned and altered, all the pups were adopted (see updates page 1) but the last little puppy, Oprah. Diagnosed with a rare form of puppy cataracts, Oprah was slowly losing her sight. The fate of her forever home in the balance, Oprah’s foster-to-adopt family, reluctantly and sadly returned her back to the care and help of the rescue. However the rescue could not have saved this sweet little puppy’s VISION alone! SHE NEEDED YOU TOO! And you were there for her! Surgery for the first eye was December 17th and she is doing wonderfully so far! We will keep everyone posted when her other eye deteriorates to the point of needing surgery. But for now OPRAH is back with her foster-to-adopt home and seeing the world again in a whole new light!!! THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR HELPING US GIVE OPRAH A BEAUTIFUL FIRST CHRISTMAS! Here is a quick update: Acting shy at the Vet’s office, you could tell she was nervous when we went in for her surgery. They say dogs can sense things and she definitely sensed something was happening. After surgery, she was tired and a bit loopy but still her loving self. Being a cuddler, she nuzzled up onto the shoulder of one of the front office staff and went to sleep. They all thought it was the cutest thing. On the ride home, she was a little antsy wanting to scratch her eye. For her size, she is quite strong and quite stubborn too, but with a cone in place, the eye was protected. She ate a little for dinner and immediately went back to cuddling and was out for the night before 10 pm. We are so grateful for all the love, prayers and support of those who helped OKBR to save Oprah’s sight! THANK YOU!! – Shana (foster-to-adopt mom) FINALLY AND FOREVER JEZZABELLE She is a true soul mate dog. We have bonded and I've earned her trust. She, Lemon and Snoopy are getting along beautifully and love to play together. All of her "growlygrowly-bark-bark" is gone. She's just a lover now. I think she just needed stability and a home with fewer dogs so she doesn't feel threatened. I've broken her of snatching food and taking fingers – now she sits and waits her turn. :) I'm so glad she's mine. ~ Diane A. JAZZMIN Now we know why she has a white face. She is an absolute ANGEL. She mastered the dog door in about 5 seconds. She is wonderful, you're right, she’s a cuddle bug. Why people have passed her over is beyond reason. What a wonderful girl she is! ~ Jill & Keith G. LOVE THIS GIRL! PAGE 3 SPOTS & AROOS Grandma We called her Grandma, because she was old and grumpy and very loved. She set the rules around here and we all loved her dearly. One of the OKC Cruelty beagles, she, too, had to endure months of the crowded, loud, harsh shelter life before the courts could release her. We worried that because of her advanced age and condition, the stress of being at the shelter for so long would be the end of our old gal before we would have get the chance to love her and finally show her the good life. BUT SHE FOOLED US! Tough as nails, this sad feeble looking little lady held on till she was FREE! And free she was! Did I say she made the rules around here? We all, human and canine alike, moved out of her way, and jumped when she yelled! Since we expected to have her just a few months, we vetted her and showered her with love and affection, whether she wanted it or not (basically she just wanted her bed and GOOD FOOD.. as much as we would give her as often as we would) She may have been old but she was STILL a beagle after all! LOL Apparently the ‘good life” agreed with Grandma. Imagine our surprise when not only did she make it a few months but it was just shy of a FULL YEAR when she must have heard the food at the bridge was more bountiful and good! She refused to eat for days for no apparent medical reason so we knew she was ready to go and helped her over to the bridge! God Speed Grandma Beagle. We hope the best year of your life was with us. May the bridge have all you have ever dreamed! WISH LIST! HELP!! THE DOGS NEED YOU TO HELP! Our volunteer base is so low, we are not sure how much longer we can keep up with the dog care and placement! The few volunteers still here are being worn to a nub and may leave us too! Please see the list below and see if there is ANYTHING, anything at all you could help with! Many you can do long distance too! ANY HELP AT ALL IS APPRECIATED BY ALL THE FUR BABIES! Dazed and confused, the three depressed pups sit and wait cautiously for what will come next. The reality is, Dewey’s mom, Comet’s new dad, and Joy’s foster mom all unexpectedly passed away recently leaving these three babies with broken hearts and spirits. Depressed and disillusioned these babies not only miss their homes but the ones they love as well and don’t understand because they did nothing wrong. Fortunately, Joy, due to her blindness has a temporary foster home to help her overcome this major loss. Dewey and Comet had no choice but come back to the kennels where there is no one to help sooth their bruised hearts and souls. ***Needing hugs and a loving temporary foster home ASAP*** At Christmas – RJ & MAY Twas the night before adoptions and all thru the barn, not a dog was barking, not one single alarm. But for two forgotten angels trying hard not to care, with some hope still in their hearts that a new home would soon be there. Nesting down in their blankets, trying to muffle their cries, a home of their own still shone from their eyes. May in her tattered ‘Adopt me” kerchief, RJ in his faded ‘Pick me!’ shirt, both felt another year passing was really going to hurt. So many ‘adoption days’ so many hopeful nights, and still no home of their own, not one, not one in sight. No love for RJ, no dreams for May, tomorrow at adoptions, they feared, would be just another day. Forgotten at Christmas, and another year on the way, would anyone ever remember RJ, or maybe poor little May? PAGE 5 SPOTS & AROOS Giselle says… MORE treats Santa! Merry Christmas! Due to the severity of her case, the vet suggested euthanasia but as a long shot, offered an expensive blood transfusion as an option. Putting their beautiful girl down would have been difficult for Mylee’s family. Fortunately they learned in time that, for the rescue, it was not an option! Accepting our assistance with trying to raise funds for Mylee’s transfusion was also difficult, but not as difficult as it was for Mylee to overcome this horrible disease. Symptoms progressively became worse before they got better. Because WE never gave up, because Mylee never gave up, she is here today to bark and howl and wiggle and tell you all about it! WOOF WOOF!! THE BEAUTIFUL RAINBOW BRIDGE Our furry friends below wait at The Bridge. The sun is warm and they are content, knowing that we remember, and that someday, we will come. MATER: He is such an amazing dog. We just love him! He and Wrigley play a night game of "tag" and he's enjoying jogging every morning with Raymond. My girls are calling him Mater Tater Head. No cold ears for Mater on his morning run DEP ANDY: Oh my, Theresa we couldn’t have asked for a better boy! No accidents, asks to go out and come in. He is the most loving and well-adjusted little man. PONGO: Just a update on PONGO he is doing just fine, he is one of those dogs that sticks like glue. I think a lot of that may be from him not being able to hear. The hearing has not been a problem-he knows a lot more sign language than I do! He sure is a lot of fun and a good companion. Here's Chester Bester with his girl Sara. ~ Cindy H. TROOPER: Hi, I am Trooper. I was adopted when I was 5 months old from the Tulsa animal control center if you recall. I was young and mistreated when I was picked up by the "Dog Catcher" and was scheduled to be euthanized in a few days because I had not been adopted in a short time period. I now live in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and am now over 3 years old and am about the happiest Beagle mix in the world. PAGE 9 SPOTS & AROOS WHERE ARE THEY NOW?? Cont. CARL: This girl and her dog are best buds. He pretty special and so loved BUDDY & SOPHIE: When Buddy stands up, he is as tall as I am!!Sophie is quite a bit smaller by about 10-13 pounds. But she minds a lot better than Buddy, who has a mind and will of his own!! But they are my babies and I love them to pieces. JOEY: Became our “Buddy". He has been a perfect fit from the moment we got him into the car. He is happily growing old and slower with his human mom and dad. Never a night is complete until the dog is sleeping soundly between us in the bed. PIGLET: She's as perfect as ever! We stayed home this weekend and watched movies. It was the perfect cuddle weather. LEIA: Hi Auntie T! I’m freezing my spots off! How r u and the puppers? LU LU: She is still the most amazing creature, and loves every minute of MIDNIGHT: "Bear" seemed like a tough old dog when we first got her from you. I remember she nipped at me when I picked her up to put her in our car. But we could not have had a gentler and loving dog then she was. She had such a personality and she always seemed to be smiling when she looked at someone. I do miss her a lot. PAGE 10 SPOTS & AROOS WHERE ARE THEY NOW?? Cont. BAILEY: She is sassy and happy! She and our white male had fun chasing each other in the backyard yesterday. She is a fast little thing! OLIVER: He is fine and dandy. He's gained 20 pounds , learned to climb stairs, loves to go on walks, is sweet as can be. We are quite happy. He's a great dog. ~ Mary H. TYSON: He does not like the cold weather! He likes to lay around all day in the nice warm house. He is still happy as can be. He howls every night before he goes to sleep. It is so funny. DAISY MAE: Chillaxin with my daddy... BO: We adopted Bo in January of 2012 and have loved having him in our family ever since. We have since renamed him Tebow in honor of Tim Tebow and he still recognized the Bo part of the name. He loves the Texas Rangers and the Denver Broncos and has the collars to prove it. He is extremely loyal and loving. He brings a lot of joy to our family and we love having him. PAGE 11 SPOTS & AROOS FEATURED DOGS Scrappy – The Maltese. They call all 10 lbs of me the ‘big ole Rottie” as I think I am a BIG dog and tell everyone all the time.
