BEEN HERE ALL ALONG A BOY REALIZES HE’S IN LOVE WITH HIS BEST FRIEND, WHO IS CURRENTLY DATING THE HEAD CHEERLEADER, IN THIS QUIRKY CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE FROM THE AUTHOR OF A LITTLE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 2 2 3/23/16 4:36 PM SANDY HALL @iamsandyhall sandyhallwrites.com Sandy Hall’s debut novel, A Little Something Different, was the first book selected by the crowd-sourced YA imprint Swoon Reads. She is also the author of Signs Point to Yes and the forthcoming Been Here All Along. She is a teen librarian from New Jersey, where she was born and raised, and has a BA in Communication and a Master of Library and Information Science from Rutgers University. When she isn’t writing or teen librarian-ing, she enjoys reading, marathoning TV shows, and taking long scrolls through Tumblr. Excerpt from BEEN HERE ALL ALONG I hold his gaze for a beat too long and can’t deny the fact that I kind of feel like kissing him. He’s just so Kyle—earnest and sensitive and kind. I bite my bottom lip, but I don’t look away. I have to close my eyes for a second, though, because it’s all too much. I don’t understand what’s happening. I open my eyes and his gaze is locked on mine, like he had taken the opportunity to observe me while my eyes were closed. “Have I ever told you that I think you look like Elijah Wood?” I laugh in surprise and glance away. “You have definitely never mentioned that.” We make eye contact again and he still looks a little sad, like his eyes are sort of wet, but he’s also smiling. He surveys my face, and more than anything I want to know what he’s thinking. I want to know what would happen if I leaned in and put my lips gently on his. Of course, my whole body chooses that moment to betray me and I actually do lean in a little. He blushes. His jaw drops and his eyes trail away. But I recover by making a big production of pulling my phone out of my pocket. There’s a pretty good chance that was the slickest thing I’ve ever done. Because for a second there, it looked like I was trying to kiss him. 3 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 3 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:36 PM FLASHFALL A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL LIVING IN A RADIATION-LADEN WORLD MUST FIGHT FOR HER FREEDOM. #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 4 4 3/23/16 4:36 PM JENNY MOYER @_jennymoyer jennymoyer.com Jenny Moyer is a debut young adult author. The hot, dusty landscape of Flashfall was inspired by her childhood spent in Arizona, and her protagonist Orion was inspired by her first time flying a plane—and realizing that her survival rested entirely on her shoulders. Jenny has lived all over the United States, but she currently lives in Des Moines, Iowa, with her husband and three sons. EXCERPT FROM FLASHFALL 297.84 grams Cirium Caves make good hiding places. But this close to the flashfall, they also make the most likely places to die. The creatures dwelling in the deep caverns are rabid by-products of the flash curtain, altered by radioactive particles. And they’re starving. Which makes them almost as desperate as us. My boots scrape the cavern ledge and a red marker illuminates at my feet. Danger. Do not cross. Behind me, Dram shifts, and in the soft jangle of climbing harness and anchors, I sense the questions he’s not saying aloud. My mother once told me I have magic. She didn’t say the words aloud, nothing as dangerous as that. The day she guided me down my first tunnel, she simply pressed my hand to the cavern wall, and I knew. I have magic in a place where it is outlawed. My father would call it something different—bio-adaptability. That’s really what we Subpars are, adapted to the curtain’s fallout, and resistant to its elements in ways that Naturals aren’t. But he doesn’t know what I feel when I’m down here. I tip forward and musty air caresses my face like the breath of a ghost. 5 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 5 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:36 PM FLAWED In a society where “flawed” people are branded with an F, a young girl takes a stand. #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 6 6 3/23/16 4:36 PM CECELIA AHERN @Cecelia_ahern cecelia-ahern.com Cecelia Ahern is the award-winning and bestselling author of many adult novels including P.S., I Love You and Love, Rosie—both of which were major motion pictures. She wrote her debut novel, P.S., I Love You when she was just twenty-one years old. In addition to writing, Cecelia also has created several television projects. Flawed is her debut young adult novel. She resides in Ireland. Excerpt from FLAWED I am a girl of definitions, of logic, of black and white. Remember this. Never trust a man who sits, uninvited, at the head of the table in another man’s home. Not my words. They were the words of my granddad, Cornelius, who, as a result of saying them, landed himself the farthest away from this table, and he won’t be welcome back anytime soon. It’s not necessarily what he said that was the problem; it was the person he said it about: Judge Crevan, one of the most powerful men in the country, who is once again, despite my granddad’s comment last year, sitting at the head of our dining table for our annual Earth Day gathering. Dad returned from the kitchen with a fresh bottle of red wine to find his usual place taken. I could see he was put out by it, but as it was Judge Crevan, Dad merely stalled in his tracks, jiggled the wine opener in his hand a bit while thinking about what to do, then worked his way around the table to sit beside Mom at the other end, where Judge Crevan should have sat. 7 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 7 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:36 PM HEARTLESS A PREQUEL TO ALICE IN WONDERLAND—THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE QUEEN OF HEARTS FROM MARISSA MEYER, THE AUTHOR OF THE LUNAR CHRONICLES! #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 8 8 3/23/16 4:36 PM MARISSA MEYER @marissa_meyer marissameyer.com Marissa Meyer is the USA Today–and New York Times–bestselling author of The Lunar Chronicles: Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Winter, and Fairest, a Lunar Chronicles Tale. She lives in Tacoma, Washington, with her husband. Excerpt from heartless She was going to faint. A shadow reared up in front of her, backlit from the blazing castle lights so that the silhouette stretched over the croquet lawns. Catherine cried out and stumbled to a halt, damp hair matted to her neck. The shadow of a hooded man engulfed her. As Catherine stared, the silhouette lifted an enormous ax, the curved blade arching across the grass. Trembling, Catherine spun around. A dark shape dropped toward her out of the sky. She screamed and threw her arms up in defense. The raven cawed, so close she could feel his wing beats as he flew past. “Are you all right?” She gasped and withdrew her arms. Her heart was thundering as she peered up into the boughs of a white rose tree. It took a moment to find him in the dark. The joker was lounging on a low-hanging branch, a silver flute in his hands, though if he’d been playing it before, she’d been too distracted to notice. Her lashes fluttered. Half of her hair had fallen from its chignon and draped over her shoulder. Her skin was burning hot. The world was spinning wildly—swirling with lemon tarts and invisible cats and curved axes and . . . The joker tensed, his brow creasing. “My lady?” The world tilted severely and turned black. 9 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 9 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:36 PM THE KISS OF DECEPTION A ROMANCE ABOUT A RUNAWAY PRINCESS, THE PRINCE SHE LEAVES AT THE ALTAR, AND THE ASSASSIN SENT TO KILL HER. #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 10 10 3/23/16 4:36 PM MARY E. PEARSON @marypearson marypearson.com Mary E. Pearson is the author of many bestselling, award-winning novels for teens, including the Jenna Fox Chronicles and the Remnant Chronicles. Book two of the Remnant Chronicles, The Heart of Betrayal, was a New York Times bestseller. The last book in the trilogy is the upcoming, The Beauty of Darkness. Mary writes full-time from her home in Carlsbad, California, where she lives with her husband and two dogs. Excerpt from THE KISS OF DECEPTION Today was the day a thousand dreams would die and a single dream would be born. The wind knew. It was the first of June, but cold gusts bit at the hilltop citadelle as fiercely as deepest winter, shaking the windows with curses and winding through drafty halls with warning whispers. There was no escaping what was to come. For good or bad, the hours were closing in. I closed my eyes against the thought, knowing that soon the day would cleave in two, forever creating the before and after of my life, and it would happen in one swift act that I could no more alter than the color of my eyes. I pushed away from the window, fogged with my own breath, and left the endless hills of Morrighan to their own worries. It was time for me to meet my day. The prescribed liturgies passed as they were ordained, the rituals and rites as each had been precisely laid out, all a testament to the greatness of Morrighan and the Remnant from which it was born. I didn’t protest. By this point, numbness had overtaken me, but then midday approached, and my heart galloped again as I faced the last of the steps that kept here from there. 11 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 11 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:36 PM THE LOVELY RECKLESS ROMEO AND JULIET MEETS THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS IN THIS EDGY ROMANCE SET IN THE SUBURBS OF WASHINGTON, DC. #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 12 12 3/23/16 4:36 PM KAMI GARCIA @kamigarcia KamiGarcia.com Kami Garcia is a #1 New York Times–bestselling author and Bram Stoker Award nominee, and the coauthor of the Beautiful Creatures and Dangerous Creatures novels. Her solo series, the Legion, includes the instant New York Times bestseller Unbreakable and its sequel, Unmarked. Kami was a teacher for seventeen years and coauthored her first novel on a dare from seven of her students. The Lovely Reckless is her first contemporary YA romance. Excerpt from THE LOVELY RECKLESS Marco Leone walks in and my heart slams against my chest. What’s he doing here? “Hey, Sopaipilla, how was school?” His gentle tone sounds unrecognizable—it’s not the one that belonged to the fierce fighter in the quad or the cocky guy in the school office. He lifts Sofia’s backpack off her shoulder. He must be her older brother. “It was good,” she says. “And this afternoon, I taught Frankie about engine blocks.” The side of his mouth tips up. “Who’s Frankie? A boy at school?” I bite my lip, and my throat turns to sandpaper. Sofia laughs and wheels her brother around. “No, silly.” Our eyes meet, and his go wide. It’s the third time I’ve seen him up close—at least when I wasn’t terrified—and he gets better-looking every time. I give him a tiny wave. “Hi.” Sofia seems to sense the awkwardness between us. “Do you know each other?” She frowns and puts a hand on her hip. “Marco, you didn’t . . .” “No, it’s nothing like that.” He rubs his hands over his face. My cheeks heat up when I realize she thinks we hooked up . . . or something. Sofia turns to me. “But you guys do know each other, right?” “No,” I say at the same time Marco says, “Yes.” I shrug. “Sort of.” “Are you positive you didn’t mess around with her?” Sofia whispers to her brother a little too loudly. Now my cheeks are on fire. Marco flashes me a dangerous smile. “I’m pretty sure I’d remember.” 13 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 13 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:37 PM MORTAL DANGER A RELENTLESSLY BULLIED GIRL MAKES A LIFE-CHANGING DEAL WITH A DANGEROUS STRANGER. Her books for young adults include The Razorland Trilogy, The Immortal Game Trilogy, and The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things. Before she began writing fulltime, she was a clown, a clerk, a voice actress, and a savior of stray kittens, not necessarily in that order. She lives in Mexico with her husband and their children. Excerpt from MORTAL DANGER He had the kind of face you saw in magazines, sculpted and airbrushed to perfection. Sharp cheekbones eased into a strong jaw and a kissable mouth. His chin was just firm enough. He had a long, aquiline nose and jade eyes with a feline slant. His face was . . . haunting, unsettling, even. His layered mop of dark hair gained coppery streaks in the halo of passing headlights that limned us both. In a minute or two, somebody would see us. Though traffic was light, it wasn’t nonexistent, and eventually some concerned motorist would pull over or make a call. I saw my window of opportunity narrowing. “What?” I managed to get the word out without stammering. “You don’t have to do this. There are other options.” His direct, gold-sparked gaze made me feel that would be a waste of time. Part of me thought I might have already jumped, and he was my afterlife. Or maybe I was on a ventilator after they fished me out of the river, which made this a coma dream. I’d read studies where doctors posited that people experienced incredibly vivid dreamscapes during catatonia. “Yeah? Like what?” I figured he’d mention therapy. Group sessions. Medication. Anything to get my butt off this bridge. Right then, only the strength of his biceps kept me from flinging myself backward. Well, that . . . and curiosity. “You can let me help you.” 15 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 15 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:37 PM NEMESIS THE PRINCESS DIDN’T EXPECT TO FALL IN LOVE . . . Her latest novel is the futuristic fantasy Nemesis, the first in a two-book series. She lives in Crestview, on the Florida Panhandle, with her husband and their daughter. Excerpt from NEMESIS The Falcon King is entirely too collected for my liking. And far too handsome for my comfort. The black paint circling his eyes does make him look fierce and intimidating, but under his scrutiny—when I dare to meet his eyes—he has a kindness that reflects back at me. A kindness that one does not expect of a Falcon King. Especially after all the horrid things my father said about his father. I would be wise, I decide, not to underestimate this new heir of Theoria. After all, my father could not have conjured up ideas from nothing, and if the Falcon King was groomed for kingship by the Warrior King, surely he will rule with the unjust, outlandish methods my father—and my tutor Aldon— always spoke of. It’s difficult though too, to feel gratitude toward a man—or is he truly a boy, like they say?—who keeps a harem as he keeps a stable full of horses or a field full of grazing cows. Though truth told, while they are there for his convenience, his harem seems to garner no attention from him. 17 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 17 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:37 PM THE SECRETS WE KEEP WHEN A GIRL’S IDENTICAL TWIN SISTER IS KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT, SHE PRETENDS TO BE HER SISTER, ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT HER TWIN’S LIFE WAS FILLED WITH DARK SECRETS. #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 18 18 3/23/16 4:37 PM TRISHA LEAVER @tleaver trishaleaver.com Trisha Leaver writes Young Adult Contemporary Fiction, Psychological Horror, and Science Fiction. Her YA novel, The Secrets We Keep, was named one of the best YA novels for summer by Teen Vogue. Trisha lives on Cape Cod with her husband, three children, and one rather irreverent black lab. Excerpt from THE SECRETS WE KEEP My phone vibrated on my nightstand, jarring me from the sketchbook I had open on my lap. I’d re-created the same drawing five times in the past week, and yet it still wasn’t good enough. Problem was, if I didn’t figure it out by midnight tomorrow, I’d be out of time. Assuming it was Josh again, I let it go to voice mail, more concerned with perfecting the sketch than bickering with him over something his neighbor and sometime-girlfriend, Kim, had said. I wasn’t interested in dissecting why she was offended that Josh chose to let me drive him to school every day, even though she lived less than a hundred yards from him and he had a car of his own. That was his problem, not mine. And if he couldn’t figure that one out on his own, then he was an idiot. I tossed my charcoal pencil down in favor of graphite. Perhaps it was the reflection of light in my picture that was off. After a few strokes, I realized it wasn’t—all I’d done was take a relatively decent drawing and make it worse. 19 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 19 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:37 PM SIX OF CROWS GAME OF THRONES MEETS OCEAN’S ELEVEN IN THIS EPIC HEIST NOVEL SET IN THE WORLD OF LEIGH BARDUGO’S GRISHA SERIES. #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 20 20 3/23/16 4:37 PM LEIGH BARDUGO @lbardugo leighbardugo.com Leigh Bardugo is the author of the New York Times–bestselling Grisha Trilogy and Six of Crows. He was supposed to be making his rounds at the Hoede house, but for the last fifteen minutes, he’d been hovering around the southeast wall of the gardens, trying to think of something clever and romantic to say to Anya. If only Anya’s eyes were blue like the sea or green like an emerald. Instead, her eyes were brown—lovely, dreamy . . . melted chocolate brown? Rabbit fur brown? “Just tell her she’s got skin like moonlight,” his friend Pieter had said. “Girls love that.” A perfect solution, but the Ketterdam weather was not cooperating. There’d been no breeze off the harbor that day, and a gray milk fog had wreathed the city’s canals and crooked alleys in damp. Even here among the mansions of the Geldstraat, the air hung thick with the smell of fish and bilge water, and smoke from the refineries on the city’s outer islands had smeared the night sky in a briny haze. The full moon looked less like a jewel than a yellowy blister in need of lancing. Maybe he could compliment Anya’s laugh? Except he’d never heard her laugh. He wasn’t very good with jokes. 21 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 21 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:37 PM THE SQUARE ROOT OF SUMMER LOVE, LOSS, AND TIME TRAVEL COME TOGETHER IN ONE HAZY SUMMER. She lives in Nottingham, England. Excerpt from THE SQUARE ROOT OF SUMMER Out on the grass, Jason’s still lounging among the daisies. He’s obviously found a new hobby at college— there’s a cigarette half–smoked in his hand, which he lifts in a half wave, half smiling. “Grots,” he says, not quite meeting my eye. That’s Ned’s nickname for me, I think. You used to call me Margot. I want to say hello, I want to say so much more than that, but the words vanish before they reach my mouth. The way we left things, there’s still so much unsaid between us. My feet grow roots while I wait for him to stand up. To talk to me. To mend me. In my pocket, my phone weighs heavy, untexted. He never told me he was back. Jason looks away, and sucks on his cigarette. After a pause, Ned claps his hands together. “Well,” he says brightly. “Let’s get you two chatterboxes inside. There’s meatballs to fry.” He struts off to the house, Jason and me walking silently behind. When I reach the back door, I’m about to follow them into the kitchen, but something stops me. Like when you think you hear your name, and your soul snags on a nail. I linger on the doorstep, looking back at the garden. At the apple tree, with its laundry blossoms. Behind us, the evening light is condensing, the air thick with mosquitoes and honeysuckle. I shiver. We’re on the cusp of summer, but I have the sense of an ending, not a beginning. But perhaps it’s that Grey is dead. It still feels like the moon fell out of the sky. 23 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 23 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:37 PM THE WINNER’S CURSE A STAR-CROSSED ROMANCE ABOUT A PRIVILEGED GIRL AND THE REBEL SHE FALLS IN LOVE WITH. #FIERCEREADS Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 24 24 3/23/16 4:37 PM MARIE RUTKOSKI @marierutkoski MarieRutkoski.com Marie Rutkoski is the author of several novels for children and young adults, including The Kronos Chronicles, The Shadow Society, and the Winner’s Trilogy. Rutkoski is currently a professor at Brooklyn College and lives in New York City. Her latest novel is the final book in the Winner’s Trilogy, The Winner’s Kiss. Excerpt from THE WINNER’S CURSE She shouldn’t have been tempted. This is what Kestrel thought as she swept the sailors’ silver off the impromptu gaming table set up in a corner of the market. “Don’t go,” said one sailor. “Stay,” said another, but Kestrel cinched her wrist-strap velvet purse shut. The sun had lowered, and caramelized the color of things, which meant that she had played cards long enough to be noticed by someone who mattered. Someone who would tell her father. Cards wasn’t even her favorite game. The silver wouldn’t begin to pay for her silk dress, snagged from the splintery crate she had used as a stool. But sailors were much better adversaries than the average aristocrat. They flipped cards with feral tricks, swore when they lost, swore when they won, would gouge the last silver keystone coin out of a friend. And they cheated. Kestrel especially liked it when they cheated. It made beating them not quite so easy. She smiled and left them. Then her smile faded. This hour of thrilling risk was going to cost her. It wasn’t the gambling that would infuriate her father, or the company she had kept. No, General Trajan was going to want to know why his daughter was in the city market alone. 25 Fierce Reads Coloring Book Interior Final.indd 25 READ MORE ON FIERCEREADS.COM/COLORINGBOOK 3/23/16 4:37 PM FIERCE READS QUIZ Looking for your next Fierce Read?
