Kris was driving down the high‐ way on duty when the ambulance driving next to him suddenly had an engine fire. Both vehicles pulled off the road and Kris rushed over with his fire extinguisher to help the U.S. Army paramedic, K RISTOPHER Kris holding a certificate of appreciation from safety director, Debbie Raymond AUST Barry Fitfield, put out the fire. Together they extin‐ guished the flash fire that resulted from the oil sprayed onto the hot exhaust. Kris then contin‐ ued to get on the ground to attack the flames beneath the engine com‐ partment, finally extinguishing the flames. tient from Fort Jackson Army Hospital to the Army hospital at Fort Gordon Georgia. Since the ambulance had no engine to power the air conditioning Kris kindly offered them to wait in his truck until another ambulance arrived to transport the patient. M ISSION M EMORIAL D AY HONORING THOSE WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE Over the years, a divide has grown in America between those that have served, and those that have not. This is com‐ pounded by the used car sales and mattress giveaways on Me‐ morial Day, when, together as one nation, we should all be honoring those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our coun‐ try. And with the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, aware‐ ness is at an all time low on the sacrifices made overseas. Josh Jespersen, son of per diem and M&R director Sharon Jes‐ persen, appreciates the patriot‐ ism, sacrifice, and humility of American soldiers. As a Navy SEAL and co‐founder of Mission Memorial Day, Josh & the team have helped restore meaning back to Memorial Day by honor‐ ing those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, serving those who wish to remember those they lost, and helping America re‐ member. This is done by flying the names of those lost on top of various mountains in North America and in communities across the nation. This year Josh & co‐founder Margaux Mange climbed Mount Denali in Alaska to honor our fallen on Memorial Day. They made the 20,320 foot trek to the summit of the mountain carrying over 500 names of the fallen on US flags. We’d like to thank and congratu‐ late everyone on the mission memorial day team for their dedication to Memorial Day and those who have fallen. Please check out missionmemorialday.com to learn more about the mission. SUMMER 2016 EDITION P AGE 3 Work Zone Safety for Drivers When it comes to summer you can always expect a lot of con‐ struction on the roads. It’s im‐ portant to be safe and cau‐ tious while driving in these conditions and be prepared for the unexpected. traffic around you, and be prepared to react Stay Alert and Minimize Distractions ‐Dedicate your full attention to the roadway and avoid distrac‐ tions that can remove your concentration from the road Keep Your Headlights On Pay Attention to the Road—“Listen to the signs,” watch brake lights on vehicles ahead, watch Merge into the Proper Lane—Merge before you reach the lane closure and be aware that traffic patterns can change daily Themajorityoffatal workzonecrashes occurredonroads withspeedlimits greaterthan50mph Don’t Tailgate Obey the Posted Speed Lim‐ it—Workers may be present just feet away and fines may be doubled for moving traffic violations Change Lanes Safely— Change lanes only where pavement marking indi‐ cate & only when traffic conditions permit Follow Instructions from Flaggers Expect the Unexpected‐ Workers, work vehicles or equipment may enter your lane without warning and other vehicles may slow, stop or change lanes unexpectedly BE PATIENT! O PERATION A IRBRAKE /B RAKE S AFETY W EEK 9/11/16—9/17/16 The International Roadcheck took place in June and over 44,000 level 1 inspections were conducted in North America. During the week of Sept. 11‐17, 2016, law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct inspections on large trucks and buses. They’ll be identifying out‐of‐adjustment brakes, and brake‐system viola‐ tions as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Week, an annual outreach and enforcement campaign designed to improve commercial motor vehicle (CMV) brake safety throughout North America. Out‐of‐adjustment brakes and brake‐system violations combine to represent half of all out‐of‐ service violations issued for commercial motor vehicles on the road. Brake systems that are improperly installed or poorly maintained can reduce the braking capacity and stop‐ ping distance of trucks or buses; a serious safety risk. THE EVANS NETWORK P AGE 4 W ELCOME M ADARIS T RANSPORTATION & CATFISH CONTAINER We would like to welcome Madaris Transportation, Catfish Container and Madaris Logistics to the Evans Network of Compa‐ nies. The Madaris Compa‐ nies were founded in 1999 by Richard Madaris. Over a relatively short period Madaris expanded, entirely organically, to manage a fleet of over 200 trucks. We’d also like to welcome these five Madaris corpo‐ rate office employees to our growing team! Top Left: Jennae Jacobsen‐ I recently re‐ turned to the Charlotte ar‐ ea so my daughter would have the opportunity to grow up near my family. Top Center: Dixon Parker‐ I grew up in South Carolina and graduated from the University of Ten‐ nessee majoring in Logistics & Transportation. I have 15 years experience in the transportation/shipping industry and have been the safety director at Madaris for the past five years. Top Right: Don Stonehouse ‐I grew up in and around the trucking industry in the Chicago area. I got my chauffer’s license (pre‐CDL days) at 18 and began driv‐ ing intrastate until I turned 21. I spent the next 25 years as a professional driver without a single accident or moving violation in a CMV. I pursued certificates and took courses through the National Safety Council and FMCSA to further my knowledge. I enjoyed work‐ ing with, and helping other drivers, and decided to be‐ come an Instructor. I spent a couple years teaching, developing, and managing CDL programs . Front Left: Crystal Pope‐ I was born in Kentucky, but spent the majority of my childhood in Bristol, TN. I was a flight attendant based out of Charlotte for US Air‐ ways up until the 9/11 at‐ tack, then worked in the auto Industry for 14 years as a Business Development / Office Manager. There are over 4.5 million people currently trapped in the human trafficking industry. Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) is a non‐ profit organization rallying America’s 3.4 million truck drivers to combat trafficking. TAT wants to give you the basics of what to look for and what to do in case you come across a suspected sex trafficker. To take part in the 26 minute training video and register with TAT please go to www.truckersagainsttrafficking.org If you suspect trafficking please don’t hesitate to call the national hotline: 1‐888‐373‐7888 Back to School Driving Tips for Truck Drivers The time is coming for everyone who uses the roads to once again start thinking about the fact that kids are getting ready to go back to school. That means more cars on the road, school buses in full operation, and an army of young pedestri‐ ans crossing roads in order to get to school. We all need to adopt a “safety first” mindset if we are to keep accidents at a minimum. For truckers, it is espe‐ cially important due to the inher‐ ent challenges of driving such large vehicles in urban and sub‐ urban environments. Congratulations to CRT, our West Contract agency in Carteret, NJ on receiving Carrier of the Year award from J.B. Hunt. 95% of the high volume of loads they moved Received 100% service satisfaction. Are you ready for more Evans Network Trivia! The first 10 drivers to answer the question correctly will get a small prize as a token of our appreciation! You must be an active driver when answering the question. Congratulations to Antwan Gibbs & Al Holmes who were last issue’s trivia winners! And the question is… When is brake safety week this year? Please email answers to [email protected] Here are some tips that truckers can employ in light of schools re‐ suming classes. Slow Down in School Zones— A driver should NEVER exceed the school zone speed limits under any circumstances Be Aware of School Buses & Traffic Congestion—Fleets of school buses and young driv‐ ers will be congesting the roads so please be cautious Eliminate Distractions— Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for two seconds can double your chances of crashing UPCOMING SAFETY MEETINGS 7/23 Atlanta, GA 7/30 Jacksonville, FL 8/20 Philadelphia, PA 8/27 Newark, NJ 8/27 Lagrange, GA 9/10 Columbia, SC 9/17 Pi sburgh, PA 9/24 Savannah, GA 9/30 El Paso, TX All drivers are required to attend 1 safety meeting a year.
