for youth development® for healthy living for social responsibility Y CA The Y. So Much More 2013 Annual Report The Gaston County Family YMCA The YMCA, So Much More. . . . . . . . What does that mean exactly? Are we more than those four letters that stand for the Young Men’s Christian Association? Well, yes we are. We are for all ages and for men and women. As a matter of fact, women make up over half of our membership and over half of our staff. Are we more than Christian? For my church friends out there, I know the question may be, “how can you be more than Christian,” but the YMCA is for everyone. We are a Christian Association, but not an Association of ALL Christians. Thank God, the YMCA is for all. The most diverse place on the planet is the YMCA in Jerusalem, where Christians, Muslims, Jews, and many from other faiths exercise, play and learn together. So what else is the Y? The YMCA is a Cause Driven Organization whose promise is to Strengthen the Foundations of Community through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. That means that we work hand in hand, staff and volunteers, to take care of our neighbors, believing that every child and teen has potential and that every person should live a healthy life. The Y does this through our programs and membership. One familiar Ted Talk says that people don’t care what you do, they care why you do it. Here the why is because of our mission. At the YMCA, we put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Because of that very simple mission statement, we are driven to ensure that young people find a nurturing environment in which they may learn, grow and thrive. Families are welcomed no matter their background so that they can spend family time together and make memories. And Older Adults find genuine care from loving staff and friends who keep them motivated to live a healthy lifestyle. The YMCA is so much more, finally, because of you. Because you give of your time, talent and treasure to make this community a better place, we benefit. In 2013 we had over 12,000 hours of volunteerism provided for the YMCA. That’s not to mention the volunteerism that our staff did for the community. So what makes us So Much More? It’s the partnership between who we are and who you help us be. Thank you for making our Y so successful. Here’s to many more years of the Gaston County Family YMCA. First and Second Graders at Forest Heights Elementary School improved their reading levels by an average of four months in the Y-Readers program known as Camp Lelo. 373 Children learned new skills in YMCA Gymnastics, Judo and Art at our William J. Pharr Family YMCA’s enrichment programs. 622 School age children were nurtured in our Afterschool program. 436 Middle and High School students learned about leadership, service and building community in YMCA Teen programs. 829 Children and Adults learned a lifesaving skill through YMCA Swim Lessons. 1,560 Adults remained physically and socially active through our Active Older Adults programs. 362 Volunteers donated 12,084 hours to the YMCA to benefit our community. 5 Caring YMCAs provided needed resources and support to families and individuals throughout Gaston County. ............... YOUTH DEVELOPMENT for youth development® for healthy living for social responsibility Believing in and Nurturing the Potential of Every Child and Teen… The YMCA partners with The Junior League of Gaston County and the Gaston County Health Department to offer Y-Life to at risk Middle School students in Gastonia’s Central YMCA. The program is based on developing life skills and healthy behaviors for Middle School students who are identified by parents, schools, coaches or themselves as being at risk. These Middle Schoolers often lack those additional caring adult relationships outside of the home and school that propel them to success. Y-Life offers those relationships both with YMCA and Health Department staff and Junior League Volunteers who give of their time, talent and treasure to offer this program. Through the program, the participants learn about health and fitness, Life Skills (Bullying Prevention & Non-Violence Behavior) and Education & Career Readiness. In 2013 the participants also were educated on pregnancy prevention programs offered through the trained staff from the Health Department. Children were either picked up by a YMCA vehicle or they were dropped off by parents or guardians to attend the program, which is offered weekly throughout the school year. Partnerships like this create a stronger Gaston County in addition to the outcomes produced by developing our youth and preparing them to be stronger, healthier adults. ................ HEALTHY LIVING for youth development® for healthy living for social responsibility Ensuring the Health and Well Being of our Citizens… Beginning a health journey can often be difficult, if not intimidating. At the Y we work to eliminate those barriers through our Coaching Connection Program. Coaching Connection is a free six week wellness program that gives members the knowledge and support they need to help them see and feel results. We believe that this connection develops both healthy habits and supportive relationships with the member so that they can achieve success in creating the healthy lifestyle that they want and deserve. This past year our directors and wellness staff made over 6,000 connections through this program with health seekers in our community who began their journey to get or remain healthy at the YMCA. Those connections helped the Y improve the lives of people in our community and build relationships with members who needed just a little more encouragement and support in order to reach success. At a place like the YMCA where our mission translates to helping people reach their God-given potential in spirit, mind and body, the coaching connections program is on target in the area of healthy living. ............... for youth development® for healthy living for social responsibility SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Taking Care of our Neighbors… In 2013 the Gaston County Family YMCA received a grant to implement a new signature program of the YMCA, Y-Readers, which addresses the Summer Learning Loss of children from lower income families. During a typical summer a low income child will fall behind in reading by up to six months, where as a middle class child will remain relatively unchanged in her reading level. The Y-Readers program addresses these losses and works to improve the reading level of children in rising grades one and two. Forest Heights Elementary School in West Gastonia was identified as the target school for implementing the first Y-Readers program in Gaston County. Principal Rice and Gaston County School Administration worked as partners to identify potential students and their families to go through the six week program. During the summer the children worked on reading, spelling and writing throughout the mornings with certified teachers, and in the afternoons YMCA staff would deliver a high energy program that was educational, creative and fun. Twenty-seven children and their families went through the program that included family nights, swimming at the YMCA, sports, games, field trips, educational guest speakers and arts and crafts. In the post survey assessment that was completed, the average student in the program increased his or her reading level by 4 months with some achieving as much as 8 months improvement. These same children would have lost 6 months of progress and instead made remarkable gains. In North Carolina the standard is that students must read on grade level by third grade. The Y-Readers program and our partnership with Gaston County Schools is seeing that achievement happen. It is our responsibility as a society to see our children succeed and this is an example of how the YMCA is helping shoulder that responsibility.
