Western Instrument Company A Division of Colorado Serum Company Product Catalog 2009 Western Instrument Company In 1959, Colorado Serum Company acquired the assets of the well-known Western Instrument & Manufacturing Company and relocated the new division’s operations to the main facility in Denver. Western Instrument & Manufacturing Company, originally founded in 1920 and based in Chicago, was one of only several early-era veterinary instrument manufacturing companies in the United States. Its industry-wide reputation for quality and customer satisfaction made it a fitting addition to Colorado Serum Company. Colorado Serum Company got its start in the early 1900’s when Hog Cholera disease was decimating the swine industry in the United States. Hog Cholera was eventually eradicated from the United States and throughout the decades, Colorado Serum Company expanded its product lines to include a full range of large animal biologicals, veterinary instruments, veterinary diagnostics, laboratory reagents, and specialty products. Today, facilities now cover 22 acres in Denver and contain all manufacturing and administrative offices. Products are marketed and distributed by numerous animal health companies across the globe. Colorado Serum Company is proud to be a 4th generation family-owned company – riding the edge of current science while continuing the valued and time honored traditions of personal and responsive service. Beginning in 1909 the company was located in downtown Chicago, manufacturing a wide range of veterinary instruments in its 5-story building. In 1960 the company was purchased by COLORADO SERUM COMPANY and moved to Denver, CO. Colorado Serum Company is a 4th generation family owned company that makes veterinary biologicals, instruments and reagents. The veterinary instrument market has seen marked changes over the past years. Many new and useful instruments have been designed and marketed. Also, there has been the introduction of foreign-made products which duplicate the design of U.S. manufacturers at a substantially reduced cost. We have evaluated many of these, and even offered some in our catalog along with instruments we produce. Over time we have come to realize that the supply of these foreign products is unreliable in quality and availability, so we have made the decision to move toward only offering items which are Made in the USA. We are pleased to announce that in 2006, we entered into a joint-marketing arrangement with STONE MANUFACTURING of Kansas City, another family-owned U.S. manufacturer. We have discovered that together we offer a complete line of high quality, U.S. manufactured veterinary instruments. You will find in our catalog selected items made by Stone, and likewise some of our items are shown in their catalog. Both companies retain their ownership and independence, but share the same philosophies and values. Feel free to visit our web-site, www.westerninstrument.com, or just give us a call at 800-525-2065. We have real people who answer the phone. WESTERN INSTRUMENT COMPANY div. of COLORADO SERUM COMPANY By: Joseph N. Manufactured and assembled to be impact and moisture resistant, well-balanced and user-friendly. New power boosting circuitry requires only two 9-Volt batteries. #21300 Pressure Activated – innovative internal switch is machined from solid brass and activates when pressure is applied to livestock; increasing battery life and reducing hand fatigue. #21303 Push Button Activated – activated by an external rubber coated push button switch. #21310 White Lightning Rechargeable - powered by a long-lasting rechargeable battery pack. The flexible shafts are 12, 24, and 36-inch lengths. The power unit is 12 ½ inches in length. The V-tip brass probes are 1 ½” from center to center. The V-tip design directs the mechanical force to the reinforced tip and reduces the force being applied to the outside, as in traditional u-shaped probe designs, resulting in higher and more reliable long–term performance. The capacitor discharge of the power unit provides consistent discharge power regardless of battery strength. Units feature a fast electrical bleed-off design eliminating residual shock in shaft. A leather band is attached to the end for convenient storage. OBJECTIVE: The stock prod is an effective and humane instrument used to efficiently move animals when they cannot be urged by any other probing measure. The shock will stimulate the animal on contact and does not cause any harm if used judiciously. APPLICATION: #21300 Pressure Activated – Place the two brass probe tips against the animal and push the assembly (approximately 1/8” ) to activate the electrical discharge. #21303 Push Button Activated & #21310 White Lightning Rechargeable – Unit will activate only when button is pressed. Once the animal has reacted, pull the prod away to avoid any contact. Both brass probe tips must be on the animal to ensure an electrical discharge. Keep the internal brass mechanism area clean with an alcohol wipe to maintain consistent contact. If mud, manure, etc… builds up between the probe tips, clean off and continue use. If not kept clean, this could cause a direct short and the electrical charge will not emit from the probe tips for proper operation. Use caution at all times and keep away from children, as this is not a toy and should be used only on livestock. #21312 - White Lightning Battery Charger #21340 - 36” Polycarbonate Shaft #21335 - 24” Polycarbonate Shaft #21320 - 12” Polycarbonate Shaft Power units are sold without SHAFTS OR batteries SPECIFICATION: This instrument represents a new generation of electronic ejaculators for rams and bucks. The unit is light weight (2 lbs.), battery-operated, enclosed in a rugged die-cast case, and designed for one hand operation. THE BAILEY EJACULATOR MOD 2 APPLICATION: The unit is simple to use. After inserting the probe approximately 4 inches into rectum, push the switch on for 4 seconds, off for 4 seconds. Repeat the cycle. Ejaculation should be achieved after only a few cycles. While the switch is depressed, the red light will illuminate, indicating operation of the unit as well as battery condition. If the light does not appear, or appears only dimly, replace the batteries. A set of fresh batteries should provide at least 100 ejaculations, and perhaps as high as 300. MADE IN THE USA Voltage Switch: Switch inside case should be set at “LO” when instrument is used on goats, or for decreased stimulation when used on sheep. The outside of the instrument may be cleaned with normal detergents. The unit is entirely sealed except the cover plate – water or other matter should not be allowed to enter. WARNINGS: Western Instrument Company makes no warranties, expressed or implied with the Bailey Ejaculator. MEGA-THERM MADE IN THE USA #21200 - LCF Mega-Therm #21205 - Eye Spoon SPECIFICATION: Some types of cancer can be successfully treated by heating the tumor tissue above normal body temperatures. The cancer cells are usually more susceptible to damage than normal body cells and so are preferentially killed. Treatment duration and temperature are important. Heating for about 30 seconds at 50º C (122º F) appears to have the same beneficial effect on some tumors as does heating for 1 hour at 43º C (about 109º F). This instrument employs a Localized Current Field (LCF) generating a two-megahertz radio frequency, to precisely heat tissue around the probes. The principle of LCF is passage of RF electric current between two electrodes. The amount of tumor between the electrodes increases the resistance component of the current, causing thermal energy dissipation. Heat is generated within the tissue and is not the result of thermal conduction from the electrodes. Temperature is determined by a thermistor located within one of the electrodes, which in turn results in modulation of the output power level of the RF generator to maintain temperature. The instrument reaches and maintains a temperature of up to 50º C (122º F), penetrating approximately 3-5mm. This temperature has been found to alter the nature of cancerous tissue, with minimal damage to surrounding normal tissue, provoking the animal’s own defensive mechanisms to cause the tumor to recede and disappear. This approach to cancer treatment is not necessarily new, but never before has the equipment been available economically to the veterinary field. The instrument is designed as a rugged, portable field model. Temperature for treatment is factory set at 50° C and cannot be changed. The three-position switch changes only the power and not the temperature. The circuitry of the instrument is designed so that heating will not take place unless the probes are in contact with tissue (or other conductive material) and the switch is in either “Hi” or “Lo” position. When these two conditions are met a high-frequency steady tone will be heard from the instrument panel. This indicates that heating is taking place. It may be necessary to apply a small amount of physiological saline solution to the area of treatment. This is necessary when tumors are somewhat dry and therefore non-conducting. Battery as supplied is fully charged. A fully charged battery may be expected to provide approximately 60 treatments. Replacement gel-cells may be obtained from Western Instrument Company. Batteries should be recharged as soon as possible after use and not stored in a discharged condition. All parts should be kept clean and dry. Do not use this model with any AC to DC power converter. The internal circuitry of the unit generates considerable heat. The all aluminum, cast handle is designed as a heat-sink to dissipate heat from the internal circuitry. This is normal, but should not be uncomfortable to the user’s hand. In extended use, a glove may be worn for operator comfort. #21210 - Probe Tip - Regular EYE SPOON (Included) For use in treatment of Bovine Cancer Eye. The spoon will immobilize the eyeball and enable rotation of the eyeball for accessible tumor exposure. OBJECTIVE: This treatment has proven useful for eye tumors in cattle and horses; warts and sarcoids in horses; anal tumors in dogs; ringworm and dermatological conditions in horses, dogs, and cats. Consult published literature for detailed usages and procedures before using these instruments. NOTE: Technical paper on the use of LCF Megatherm is available from Western Instrument Company #21202 - Rechargeable Battery Pack For veterinary use only - should be used by or under the direction of a veterinarian. APPLICATION: The dehorners can be utilized on calves from birth to eight weeks of age (depending on the breed of the animal and size of the bud). Make sure the animal is restrained with limited head movement. Remove the protective cover and place the precision sharpened end over the horn bud. Push down and twist the dehorner back and forth to penetrate the skin and get to the base of the bud. When the skin has been penetrated and the tube can’t be pushed down any deeper, the bud should break off. Grab the artery between your thumb and forefinger, twist and hold for a few seconds and release. If you have a bleeder, use a pair of artery forceps to stop the bleeding. During fly season, or another vector-type insect season, you need to have a fly spray or antiseptic available. tube dehorners MADE IN THE USA #23052 - 3/4” ID #23053 - 7/8” ID #23054 - 1” ID SPECIFICATION: Manufactured of die-cast metal and nickel-plated. CALF & SHEEP Length 12” #24115 - 1/2” Head #24116 - 9/16” Head #24117 - 5/8” Head multi-dose balling gun SPECIFICATION: Manufactured from brass tubing with a nickel finish; 1 1/8” ID, 1 ¼” OD and 18” length. Holds up to five boluses. The thumb ring and two matching finger rings are die-cast zinc, the plunger is aluminum and all parts can be replaced. If required, the entire gun may be autoclaved or sterilized. The extracting head of the gun is rounded and polished smooth to prevent injury to animal. OBJECTIVE: To aid in the medical application of one to five boluses via oral administration. MADE IN THE USA #24327 12 APPLICATION: Remove the screw on the shaft and place in any of the predrilled holes (4) to regulate the number of boluses for application. A spring is located in the gun tube to aid in holding the boluses within the gun prior to application. Do not force the boluses into the head. Insert the gun head into the animal’s mouth at the side, center the gun to the center of the throat, push on the plunger and the bolus will release. Be cautious and do not force the gun too far down the throat or damage to the pharynx could occur. After releasing the bolus make sure it is swallowed before removing the gun. Slowly pull back the gun and remove it from the mouth. Clean with soap and water, dry well. Always use caution with instrument procedures. SPECIFICATION: The obstetrical (OB) chains (#25141 & #25146 ) are USA manufactured from high-quality nickel-plated steel with twist links and are high tensile strength (1200 lbs). The twist-link design aids in the prevention of slippage and damage to the animals’ legs. It also provides a snug grip for the handles when they are placed on the twist-links for leverage. The oversized oval links on each end of the chain are made of hardened carbon steel for strength. The #25132 handle is constructed of die cast zinc and nickel plated. The #25135 handle is solid welded stainless steel including a modified vinyl grip that can be autoclaved. The stainless steel handle is a more durable material than die-cast zinc. The choice of chain length is dictated by where the placement of the fetus is in the birth canal. The shorter length chain is best used when the front legs are exposed and the longer length if the fetus is displaced in the birth canal. The handle selection has no direct effect on the procedure and is user preferred. o.b. chains & handles MADE IN THE USA OBJECTIVE: The OB chains and handles are utilized for aiding in the delivery of a fetus when assistance is required during birth. APPLICATION: Feed the chain twist-links through the oval ends of the chain to form a loop which is placed snugly over the animal’s front feet above the hooves. The handle hooks are placed on the chain twist-links where they are the most convenient and comfortable for the pull-assisted birth. Grasp the handles and firmly pull on the chain in conjunction with the animal’s uterine contractions. Pull firmly and smoothly but try to avoid extreme jerking and unnecessary pressure due to the possibility of injuring the fetus and/or the dam. Remove and thoroughly clean the equipment after the assisted birth is completed. It is best to consult a veterinarian for further information or assistance in most situations where there is a birthing difficulty. #25141 - 30” High Tensile Chain #25146 - 60” High Tensile Chain #25132 - Die-Cast Handle #25135 - Stainless Steel Handle thermometer #28420 - Thermometer with Case (F & C Scale) 13 o.b. wire saw & handles MADE IN THE USA SPECIFICATION: A handy, pliable plastic container with 32 feet of 3x9 ply, 27 strand, high-tensile-strength galvanized steel obstetrical wire. The length can be custom ordered upon request, ask for details. The handles are die-cast metal and nickel-plated with a thumb screw to secure the wire in place. The handles are packaged as a pair. OBJECTIVE: The high-tensile-strength wire saw and handles, with the aid of a fetatome, are used primarily in obstetrics to remove a fatal fetus from an animal’s reproductive tract. There are several uses for the wire saw and are solely imaginative in compliance with the user’s discretion. When using the wire saw for obstetrical procedures, it is recommended for use by a veterinarian or under the direction of a veterinarian. APPLICATION: The length of wire used varies with each application and user. Place one end of the wire through a handle opening and tighten with the thumb screw for security. After the length is decided, cut the wire and place the other handle on the opposite end. To prevent damage to the reproductive tract, a fetatome or vaginal speculum is recommended for use with a wire saw. If you do not cut the wire and leave as one piece by slipping a handle along the wire to a desired location, cut the wire after use of that wire section. When the handle thumb screw has been secured it can break some wire strands and weaken the wire to make it vulnerable for future use at that direct location. #25913 - High Tensil Strength Steel #25915 - Handles o.b. snares MADE IN THE USA SPECIFICATION: The snares are manufactured with steel cables, stainless steel rods and solid aluminum T-handles. The round aluminum handle is 3 3/4” in length by 5/8” diameter on both snares. The #25841 has a 5/32” diameter by 20 ½” length exposed cable and a 28” length shaft. The #25842 is equipped with a 3/32” by 15” length exposed cable and a 17 ¼” shaft. OBJECTIVE: To aid in the dystocia (abnormal position) of a fetus within the womb. When using a snare you can prevent a difficult delivery, possibly save the neonatal from mortality or morbidity, and recover a healthy dam and /or fetus. APPLICATION: Place the snare around the animal’s nose or leg and pull on the snare handle to secure a proper placement of the fetus before or during parturition (birth). Use caution and do not apply excessive pressure or damage could occur. If repositioning can not be accomplished a veterinarian should be consulted for assistance. #25841 - Bovine #25842 - Porcine 14 SPECIFICATION: All tubing is cut in 10’ lengths. Actual sizes for outside and inside diameters are on attached drawings. Koroseal and clear tubing are constructed of plastic flexible vinyl tubing with finished beveled ends. Koroseal is a black color to show less staining after prolonged use. tubing OBJECTIVE: To aid in the administration of medication or to extrude liquid or gas from an animal’s stomach / rumen. APPLICATION: The animal should be well restrained or sedated before attempting to utilize the tubing which will probably be attached to an injection pump. Pass the tubing through the throat speculum until it is in the stomach / rumen area. A pungent odor will be emitted from the stomach / rumen and a rumbling or gurgling sound will be present if it is inserted properly. If the tubing is in the lungs you will feel the air flow at the exposed end of the tubing. If the procedure is performed intranasally, the preceding description of application and operation are followed. See the injection pump application for more detailed operation and procedures. MADE IN THE USA Latex Tubing - 50’ Roll Clear Tubing - 10’ Roll Koroseal Stomach Tubing - 10’ Roll 15 injection pump MADE IN THE USA #26845 - Leather Packing Pump #26850 - O-Ring Pump SPECIFICATION: The #26845 Injection Pump features leather packing on the end of the plunger whereas the #26850 Injection Pump has an O-Ring. A felt washer is located at the head cap of both instruments and as it wears, simply tighten the head cap until the vacuum is corrected or the unit quits leaking. It is very important to keep the felt washer (#10) lubricated. If it dries out and will not absorb properly it needs to be replaced or leakage will continue. The instruments are manufactured of seamless, nickel-plated, ultra -durable brass tubing. The exposed end of the plunger has a solid brass, nickel-plated, convenient oversized T-handle for easy grasping and operation. The continuous flow design allows pumping on both the “in” as well as the “out” stroke of the plunger. The upper and lower adapters are graduated in dimensions to accommodate various diameter size tubing. The tube, when connected to the lower adapter, will only draw and not extrude fluids. Parts and service are available upon request. OBJECTIVE: The continuous flow injection pump is utilized as an aid in removing fluid from an animal’s stomach or in administering fluid treatment for gastrointestinal, rumen or fluid complications. APPLICATION: The animal should be well restrained before attempting to utilize the injection pump with tubing and/or speculum. Place the tubing parallel to the animal’s frick stomach speculum side to estimate the approximate length of tubing to mark for identification of tube length from the mouth to the stomach/rumen area. When using a Frick speculum, place it in the animal’s mouth either from the side or front of the mouth. You need to be cautious and not place the end of the speculum in the throat area as this may cause ulcerations. Pass the tubing through the speculum until it is in the stomach/rumen. Confirm the tubing is located within the stomach/rumen and not in the lungs. There will be a pungent odor emitted from the stomach/rumen and a rumbling or gurgling sound will be present if it is MADE IN THE USA inserted properly. If the tubing is in the lungs, you will feel the air flow at the exposed end of the tubing. After insertion is properly accomplished, fit the exposed tubing end over the upper pump attachment located on the hex head (#11). Connect separate tubing to the bottom adapter of the pump (#16) and place one end into the fluid for #26036 - Frick Stomach Speculum administration. If you do not use the separate tubing, then simply immerse the bottom of the pump into the fluid for administering. The pump will inject fluid on both the “in” and “out” movement of the plunger when the hose/hoses are attached as described above. Replacement Parts: To remove tubing from the stomach/rumen, release the tubing from the upper adapter #29292 (3 & 10) – Leather & Felt (#17). OBJECTIVE: Floating is only one dentition procedure to maintain the symmetry of the arcade in an animal’s mouth and to allow for an unimpeded elliptical chewing motion, as well as assist in bit pressure performance and a guide to better animal health. If the arcade is left unattended, the animal can experience vast pain intraorally which can lead to nutritional problems, negative disposition, dental dilemmas and poor performance in the athletic or working animal. APPLICATION: To augment professional results in floating, it is important to maintain a concise routine to reduce animal stress and resistance. After the animal has been well restrained (see speculum and wedge application), approach the animal with a steady, slow movement to allow familiarity and observation of the operator and float. Slowly insert the float into the mouth of the animal to allow a gradual sensation of the foreign object. Start by floating the upper arcade premolars with the 30-degree angle float head. Initially begin with short, low pressure strokes until the animal accepts the procedure and continue with firm strokes until the floating is accomplished. Hand position adjustment is critical because it influences float head positioning, adjust accordingly to feel and sound. Tooth particles should be visible the full length down the middle of the float blade if the procedure is being done properly. Remove the float occasionally for examination and make corrective adjustments. Equine animals should have a thorough biannual examination of the mouth arcade to denote any abnormalities. During the floating procedure it will be necessary to use different angle heads and possibly different grades of blades (user’s discretion).
