NEW TECH MACHINERY’S RON SCHELL
HAS HELPED TRANSFORM THE
ROLL-FORMING INDUSTRY FOREVER
DT: ASHRAE aims to reduce building energy use significantly. The proposed 90.l2010 standard would cut energy use by 30 percent from 2004 requirements. In addition, ASHRAE’s Research Strategic Plan 2010-2015 would achieve within two years a
50 percent reduction in annual energy use from the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 standard for
all building types. Further, ASHRAE intends that 75 percent of all building contractors
will use the 90.1 standard by 2015.
Ron Schell is a 30-year veteran of the roll-forming industry.
Ron began his career in roll-forming in 1981 with Watertite
Industries as a horizontal band saw operator. He worked his
way from there to building machines from the ground up and
within three years was promoted to plant manager. He
designed and improved the Watertite line of gutter, elbow and
downspout machines and developed the Waterhawk 5-inch
gutter machine. He is best known for his design of the first
urethane-drive gutter machine in the industry, which allowed
it to run all standard gutter materials, including 24-gauge
steel, without adjustment. The machine was nicknamed the “Terminator” because Ron
knew it would terminate the old technology making it obsolete.
In 1989, Ron cofounded Jobsite Tech and developed the first and only Belt Drive
panel machine in the industry called the “1216 Panformer.” In 1991, Jobsite was sold

SWENSON PROVIDES TOOL TO
HEM VALLEY PANELS AND NEW
STONE-COATED STEEL SHEAR
Swenson Shear has added the Valley
Hemmer to the SnapTable® product line
and the StoneCutter Shear for the stonecoated steel industry.
With the new Valley Hemmer, users
can easily hem concealed fastener panels
at any angle. The unique rolling system
of the Valley Hemmer allows for the
hemming of eaves and valleys in one
quick motion. Simply slide the panel
onto the table, lock hold-down bar into
position and easily roll the handle
around. Further crimping is not required.
The innovative tool eliminates scratching, denting and bulging of the panel that
is often associated with the use of handheld bending tools. The hemming
process is sped up and simplified while
the overall hem quality is dramatically
improved from traditional hemming
techniques. The Valley Hemmer is now
standard at the end of the ST7000 and
ST8000 SnapTable models and is also
available as a standalone unit.
The StoneCutter Shear is the new
solution for shearing the popular but

hand snips. The shear is designed to
make continuous cuts for unlimited
length shearing. A brake has been built
directly into the top frame of the new
shear eliminating the need for two separate tools. An attachable table to aid with
panel alignment is also available as an
accessory.
Swenson Shear has been supplying
the metal construction industry with quality, custom metal-cutting shears for more
than 50 years. Swenson started out manufacturing pivot shears for the exposed fastener, shingle, shake and soffit panels and

INCENTIVES FOR RENEWABLE
ENERGY AND GREEN BUILDING
By Scott Kriner, President, Green Metal
Consulting Inc.
Today’s green building market is regulated by a variety of codes and standards
from state and local jurisdictions as well
as some federal legislation. Such regulations and legislation establish the basic
compliance path for the design, construction and operation of green buildings.
However, the tremendous growth in
demand for green products and green
buildings is also due to the many incentives now offered to building owners,
homeowners and contractors.
Some of these available incentives
for the use of energy-efficient products
such as cool roofing, windows and doors
are in the form of rebates directly from
utility companies. Federal and state
incentives also help building owners
overcome the high initial cost of
installing on-site renewable energy
sources. Local jurisdictions have their
own incentives for renewable energy
installations on buildings as well as
building materials or systems that are
energy-efficient. Those incentives can be
offered as financial benefits as well as
perks for project management. For example, financial incentives can take the
form of tax credits, tax deductions, special tax assessments, grants and loans.
Non-financial incentives can sometimes
include streamlined permitting processes
and expedited plan reviews when a green
project is submitted.
To make it easier to identify the large
number and the complexity of the state
and local incentives, the Database of
State Incentives for Renewable Energy
(DSIRE) was established and funded by
the U.S. Department of Energy in 1995.
DSIRE (www.dsireusa.org) is an ongoing
project of the North Carolina Solar
Center and the Interstate Renewable
Energy Council.
This comprehensive database also
considers how utility and federal incentives and policies that promote renewable
energy and energy efficiency interact
with state and local incentives.
It allows builders, contractors and
building owners to see what is available to them on a regional basis. Local
incentives can frequently be added to
federal incentives for the use of energy-efficient products or renewable
energy technologies. For example,
local incentives can be realized in
addition to the Federal tax credit that
remains available to homeowners who
install a pre-painted metal roof that is

MERCEDES, RANGE ROVER ENGINES
Honeywell Turbo Technologies, the leading global developer of automotive turbochargers, launched three innovative
turbocharger technologies designed to
enable fuel efficiency and performance
on several of the newest premium
engines featured at the 2010 Paris Motor
Show.
Honeywell introduced its first-inclass ball bearing technology on the 2011
Mercedes S 350 BlueTec diesel engine,
expanded its TwoStage Parallel technology to a V8 engine for the first time on
Range Rover’s 2011 V8 4.4L engine, and
launched its modern gasoline technology
on the brand new V8 gasoline engine in
the Mercedes S 500 BlueEFFICIENCY.
Each of these engines increases both
power (hp) and fuel-efficiency by more
than ten percent over its previous models,
while generating lower emissions
according to each automaker.
“Honeywell’s latest turbocharger
innovations are delivering value to
automakers and drivers who are demanding better fuel economy and enhanced
performance across all ranges of
engines,” said David Paja, Vice
President, Marketing for Honeywell

Honeywell is delivering technology solutions that help meet the converging
demands of performance and efficiency.”
Mercedes Benz: V6 Turbodiesel
For the first time, Honeywell will deliver
a ball bearing technology to a mainstream diesel passenger car on the
Mercedes Benz S 350 BlueTec. By
reducing friction losses, ball bearing
technology enables improvements in fuel
economy, emissions and overall performance. Mercedes says that its new 3.0L V6
turbodiesel engine will increase combined fuel economy by 11 percent to 35
mpg (6.8l/100km) and decrease CO2
emissions to 177 g/km. At the same time,
the engine power is increased by 10 percent to 258 hp and torque by 15 percent
to 620 Nm.
Land Rover: V8 Turbodiesel
Honeywell’s TwoStage Parallel turbocharger will boost Range Rover’s 2011

INNOVATIVE ENERGY, INC.
WEATHERS RECESSION,
ANNOUNCES NEW PRODUCT
Innovative Energy was formed in 1980
and has since developed many energyconserving products using reflective
technology. The company continues to
market high-performing, quality products
and actively seeks new ways to meet the
ever-changing demands of the marketplace.
The announcement of Innovative
Energy’s newest innovative product

again. Astro-Pearl uses a pearlescent
reflector to give one of its surfaces a
pearl-like finish. This offers a solution
for companies that want to benefit from
reflective insulation, but do not want the
aluminum foil finish.
Astro-Pearl also reflects as much as
97 percent of radiant heat transfer. With
Astro-Pearl, companies’ not only get a
product that has the look they want, they
get a product that produces the results
they need.
Even in a tough economy,
Innovative Energy is happy to say that
business continues to grow and the company is proud to have a new and exclusive product line now available.
“Like all companies, we have struggled through the recession with lower
sales and profits. But the good news is
we haven’t had to lay off any of our
employees,” says Robert Wadsworth,
President of Innovative Energy.
Wadsworth credits his company’s
success to its diversity in the marketplace
and employees who are dedicated to producing quality products and providing
excellent customer service.
“We serve a number of different
markets—original equipment manufacturers in automotive, spa and other recreational consumer items,” continues
Wadsworth. “Our packaging division
focuses on reflective materials for shipping temperature-sensitive products. This
diversity has enabled us to keep our
employees working and looking to the
future with optimism.”

PERMA “R” PRODUCTS RAISES THE
STANDARD FOR ROOFING FELTS
The award-winning PermaFeltGoldTM,
currently on display by manufacturer
Perma “R” Products at METALCON
2011 (booth 838), is designed to provide
metal roofing contractors a competitive
alternative to asphalt-based and other
synthetic roofing felts when used in
sloped roof applications. This premium,
nail-down synthetic roofing felt delivers
exceptional weather barrier performance
and is lighter in weight than most other
roofing felts, yet is strong and durable.
And the light khaki color provides a cooler working surface than the gray and
black surfaces normally found.
PermaFeltGold is 100 percent synthetic and is coated with a proprietary
rubberized polyolefin coating. Its top
side has an unsurpassed level of slide
resistance and the bottom side will not
slip on the substrate. Weighing in at only
30 pounds, the 4-foot-wide roll is 250
feet long (10 squares) and is easier and
faster to install than typical felts. It lays
flat and is easy to bend when forming
around corners and working in valleys.
PermaFeltGold can be left exposed
for up to six months while maintaining its
ability to shed water. The superior tear
resistance holds up against strong winds,
unlike conventional asphalt felts which
easily tear and must be repaired prior to
applying the roof covering. It even has
been used on storm-damaged roofs in
place of blue tarps as a temporary cover
prior to the finished final roof system
being installed.
In fact, in 2008 PermaFeltGold was

MANNING BUILDING PRODUCTS
ANNOUNCES THE PERMA-BOOT 312
PERMANENT ROOF LEAK REPAIR
Raleigh Company releases product that
addresses major flaw in modern roof
design and installation.
Most modern roofs will leak in the first
7-10 years of service causing hundreds of
millions of dollars in property repairs
annually.
While shingles are designed for a 2050 year life, the roofing system is dependent on a small pipe boot at each roof penetration to keep out rain and weather. The
pipe boots offer no warranty and with near
certainty will become a failure point in the
first years after installation, sending water
running down into the living area of the
structure. This is a common problem and
causes unnecessary loss and destruction
every day in the United States.
“As an insurance repair specialist, we
respond to many roof leaks to find that all
too often the problem is a deteriorated
roof boot. The current fix requires a roofing contractor to replace the boot as well
as the shingles around it. With the introduction of the Perma-Boot, this repair can

The project’s first phase will require a
$750 million investment and directly create 500 jobs during peak construction. One
hundred and fifty permanent Nucor jobs
will be created, earning an average annual
salary of $75,000, plus benefits; roughly
twice the area’s median household income.
If the additional phases are built, over time
Nucor could invest more than $3 billion
total at the site and increase permanent
employment to more than 1,000.
Nucor anticipates issuing prior to
year-end approximately $600 million in
Gulf Zone Opportunity Bonds to partially
fund the capital costs of the project.
Nucor and affiliates are manufactur-
ers of steel products, with operating
facilities primarily in the U.S. and
Canada. Products produced include: carbon and alloy steel—in bars, beams,
sheet and plate; steel joists and joist girders; steel deck; fabricated concrete reinforcing steel; cold finished steel; steel
fasteners; metal building systems; light

GOODBYE TO THE UGLY
‘SEA OF BLUE TARPS’ THIS
HURRICANE SEASON
New Grip-Rite Underlayment Product
Looks Like Real Roofing Shingles
Grip-Rite® ShingleLayment™, a woven
polypropylene underlayment with an
exclusive, patent-pending shingle print
pattern, eliminates the unsightly “sea of
blue tarps” look of temporary roof coverings common to hurricane or storm damaged areas.

of powder coatings with the color, customization and color-matching capabilities of liquid coatings.
MDN: Where is your current product
emphasis?
SM: Obviously, like most companies in
the building product industry, our goal is
to help architects design and construct
greener buildings.
MDN: And how are you doing that?
SM: Well, in addition to introducing
ULTRA-Cool and VARI-Cool technologies, we’ve been very aggressive about
getting our colors listed and registered
with ENERGY STAR, the CRRC and
other similar organizations. PPG has 341
products on the CRRC product directory
and another 282 on the ENERGY STAR
roof products list, which is more than just
about anybody in the industry.
MDN: Are any other technological
advances on the horizon?
SM: Of course, we’re also looking for

difficulty of matching coating colors and
effects across a number of building surfaces. Do you have any advice for them?
MDN: How is PPG using the web to help
architects and specifiers?
SM: We’ve added a number of new tools
to our website (www.ppgideascapes.com),
including an SRI (solar reflectance index)
calculator that makes it easier for architects to identify coatings that match their
aesthetic and performance requirements
or specific building codes and green certification requirements. We’re adding more
colors to that list all the time.
MDN: What about the growing use of
BIM software?
SM: We’ve made that a lot easier, too. Our
website now hosts downloadable technical data for use with modeling software.
SM: That has always been a problem in
our industry and we try to address it
specifically through our PPG Certified
Applicator (PPG/CAP) and PPG
Certified Metal Panel (PPG/CMPP) programs. These initiatives enable us to partner with a select group of suppliers that
we train, audit and work with to deliver
superior quality, not just in terms of color
harmony, but also sample production,
fast-track construction site delivery and
other critical customer service functions.
MDN: What does the future hold for PPG?
SM: We’re very excited about what’s
ahead. There’s no denying the economy
has been difficult, particularly for people
like us in the building industry, but it’s
still a time of tremendous innovation.
Because of our strong products, people
and research capability, we feel we’re
well-positioned to remain a leader in the
industry, particularly as the building
industry and economy pick up.

thing for the right solution, a solution
such as AppliCad.
AppliCad doesn’t just perform a set
of basic functions, it helps roofers make
money. What they do in minutes takes
hours with any alternate solution. That is
a savings the operator gets every day. A
savings in time (time is money) that provides a return on investment EVERY
DAY. A one-time savings when buying
cheap will cost dearly in the long run.
We can use all sorts of analogies to
compare the differences. What about the
power saw analogy: One can go to their
favorite hardware chain and buy a lesser
power saw for about $20, and when it
breaks down in just a couple of months,
they go and buy a new one. While driving around town looking for a new saw,
one is not working on the job. Factor that
into the cost of a saw as well. Or, one
could simply buy a professional tradequality power saw (and pay a little extra)
and it works over and over for years. That
is a ROI.
AppliCad software is the finest in
the world for metal roofing and cladding.

GLOBAL ALUMINIUM MARKET WILL
BE WORTH $99.9 BILLION IN 2011,
SAYS LATEST VISIONGAIN REPORT
The aluminium industry is emerging as
one of the strongest markets after recession as the commodity is gradually gaining prominence in the recovering transportation and construction industries.
The global aluminium market is a steadily growing market which is expected to
follow a progressive above average
growth rate in developing nations and a
modest, steady growth rate in mature
markets. Visiongain calculates that the
global aluminium market will be worth
$99.9 billion in 2011.
Although the demand for aluminium
was negatively impacted during the
recession; the industry is rapidly pickingup owing to the soaring demand of developing Asian economies and rebounding
economies of developed nations. China
and India are the major contributors to
global aluminium production and consumption with other countries, including
Russia, U.S., Australia, Brazil and
Norway, making significant contributions to the global growth. Visiongain
expects the global metals and mining
industry and in particular, the aluminium
market to bounce back and demonstrate
solid growth in line with previously
expected growth rates.
The emerging economies, which in
total maintained positive growth through
the crisis, will continue to register strong
growth, driving demand for aluminium
products in the coming decade. Being the
largest aluminium consuming sector,

within the overlying dolomite and limestone which will make up the eastern
high wall of the planned open pit.
These results demonstrate that
additional infill drilling may contribute to the development of additional reserves within the existing pit shell.
In addition, the majority of the drillholes on the eastern flank of the

effective means to maximize our opportunity and to minimize our capital risk.”
Additional exploration work over
recent months has included extensive
road cut channel sampling to refine the
surface gold footprint in the main pit
area. This work defined a surface area in
excess of 1,000 feet long by 100 to 250

mineralization is exposed and where
mining will encounter no waste rock
overlying the main ore zone.
Atna has received all necessary permits and approvals for Reward Mine

the entire Tolomatic product line, the
stainless steel ERD actuators are catalog
items and can be built to order and
shipped within five working days.
“Most stainless steel actuators available
to the food and beverage industry tend to be
custom orders,” says Aaron Dietrich, Electric
Products Manager at Tolomatic. “Custom
orders take more time to make and typically
cost more. By making the new ERD SS2 a
catalog product family, we’ve been able to
speed up delivery, lower costs, and make
integration easier and more trouble free.”
The stainless steel ERDs are available
as two main ordering options. The SS2
option is available in two sizes with protective motor enclosure and a variety of
cabling options. The SS2 option offers a
choice of electrical connections that include
either cord grips or industry-standard conduit threads. The SS1 is available in three
sizes and is, essentially, a stainless steel version of the base ERD. The ERD with the
IP67 option features Viton seals for protection in caustic washdown environments.
