Recent comments claiming 100% use of recycled material in corrugated packaging have been highly misleading. The board make-up of corrugated has to have an element of virgin fibre (Kraft) to ensure the total paper and packaging supply chain can function. We understand what life in our customers world is like, so that we can improve our products and work with them to develop their business. Removing our customers’ ability to influence their purchasing requirements is not within our DNA as it will not gain their respect and loyalty. We will continue to honour our direct relationship with all our customers and strive to provide cost effective packaging solutions along with creating USP’s. Our objective is to help you sell more. Clive Bowers Chief Executive Officer, Smurfit Kappa Corrugated SPECIALIST BOARD LAUNCHED New metalised film laminated board MirriNor has been launched as a collaboration between Smurfit Kappa Norboard, the speciality and graphical division of Smurfit Kappa Sheetfeeding, and Mirri, a division of Celloglas. With gift packs, luxury and FMCG products in mind, MirriNor combines the flexibility of Smurfit Kappa’s patented T-flute microflute with Mirri’s high quality, printable metallic film, to provide finishes capable of lifting brands into a premium sector, whilst reducing packaging weight and adding strength. The FSC accredited T-flute offers a premium quality print finish with ‘curvable’ properties so cartons no longer has to have regular geometry. Mirri’s metallic film can host a wide range of decorative print finishes and provides dramatic results through its use of the Color-Logic Process Metallic Color System. MirriNor, like T-flute, is machine erectable and can be full colour printed using UV Litho or conventional litho printing process (using fully oxidising inks). Adrian Bird, Smurfit Kappa UK Sales Director, explains why integrity and respect is the key to the company’s support for its customer base. “Smurfit Kappa places great value on the relationships we enjoy with some of the world’s most successful brands, many of whom have long ancestries and are highly valuable commodities that create thousands of jobs here in the UK. Smurfit Kappa also has a well-earned reputation for innovative and sustainable solutions, helping brand owners increase the performance of their products and in turn keeping the wheels of the British and global economies turning. “Smurfit Kappa employs over 2000 people in its UK operations, many of them developing award winning packaging solutions for ‘blue-chip’ brands. It’s true to say that our customers drive our desire to improve our products constantly, and as an integrated manufacturer with our own UK paper mills, we have the ability to develop products like our new lighter, stronger S-flute board that are not dependent on external supply sources. We know how important brands are to the UK economy and that’s why, at Smurfit Kappa, we’re pleased to be working with, and backing Britain’s brands. Without them the world would be a very dull place”. We know how important brands are to the UK economy Awards Smurfit Kappa continues its winning streak with a number of awards nominations and wins demonstrating the company’s commitment to design, innovation and sustainability. Quintessential Starpack Success Smurfit Kappa is celebrating five wins at the 2011 Starpack Awards where they were acknowledged for innovation, environmental awareness, recycling and the overall functionality of packaging. Smurfit Kappa applied the concept of sustainability to each of its two Silver and three Bronze awards, which included a promotional pack that reduces the amount of raw materials used by 80%, a unique free-standing pouch for alcoholic beverages, a new design for fast food platters and a recyclable alternative to styrene packaging for toner cartridges. Clean Sweep at Flexotech Smurfit Kappa Print Vision Chelmsford received unprecedented acclaim from judges at this year’s FlexoTech Awards for producing the “best process print ever seen on B-flute” for the Bacardi Breezer Cool Box in the Corrugated Post-Print Category. Smurfit Kappa were the only nominees in this category - the other entries chosen were from Smurfit Kappa Northampton for the Super Heroes (inside box) and Smurfit Kappa Delitzch. 3 SK111002 A4 Newsletter 297x210mm Q7:Layout 1 insight 15/11/11 17:29 Page 5 packaging solutions Smurfit Kappa extends FLUTE RANGE to provide a symphony of packaging solutions When you are composing your packaging specification, how do you choose the right flute? The guidelines act as industry standards to ensure packaging solutions are not only ‘Shelf Ready’, but are also fully ‘Retail Ready’. Smurfit Kappa has developed three programmes which will assist all disciplines involved in the supply chain to take into account the key factors involved in becoming retail ready, namely that outers should be: EASY TO RECOGNISE EASY TO OPEN EASY TO SHELF However, most importantly, as you would expect from the UK’s packaging leaders, it is designed to ‘Help Our Customers Sell More’. Combined with Smurfit Kappa Packaging Division’s Carbon Trust Standard, successfully re-certified in October 2011, Smurfit Kappa is the only packaging organisation that has had both its packaging and paper divisions certified. The Carbon Trust Standard now covers Smurfit Kappa’s complete packaging cycle from the recovery of fibre through paper manufacture and sheetfeeding to conversion and back again. The Packaging Division was re-certified to the Carbon Trust Standard after measuring, managing and improving carbon efficiency by 6.2% (tCO2e/ksm) over the last two years. The division was congratulated on the establishment of a high profile internal sustainability team; the range of carbon/energy awareness training programmes carried out; £1.83M of investments associated with the reduction of carbon impact; and its constant development of new carbon reducing initiatives. Smurfit Kappa’s Corrugated Division has also successfully completed the annual surveillance of their FSC and PEFC chain of custody following an audit during June/July 2011 and is now looking to further extend the scope of the chain of custody management scheme to include the recently acquired Mondi sites at March, Mold and Diss. This project is planned for completion by the end of 2011. Smurfit Kappa’s extensive green credentials mean that brand owners and retailers who source packaging from Smurfit Kappa have an in-depth knowledge of its carbon footprint and reinforces the unique strengths that integrated production offers those wishing to purchase sustainable packaging to support their corporate and brand positioning. Paper recycler ticks all the boxes FC Cartons, the UK’s leading provider of gluing, folding and window patching services to the carton, print and packaging industries is returning hundreds of tonnes of waste to the packaging chain every year with the help of the UK’s market leading paper and cardboard recyclers, Smurfit Kappa Recycling. Both of these businesses share in their commitment to environment and sustainability. As an ISO 14001 registered company that takes the environmental impact of its operations very seriously, FC Cartons has always been keen to ensure any waste board is returned to the UK’s paper packaging chain. Ever since it began working with Smurfit Kappa Recycling, FC Cartons has been impressed with its extremely reliable and flexible collection service that accommodates the fluctuations in its production cycles. Waste board collections can vary from two per month to two or more every week. 6 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2010 RELEASED Download now at www.smurfitkappa.com SK111002 A4 Newsletter 297x210mm Q7:Layout 1 15/11/11 17:30 Page 8 products and service range insight High Definition PRINTED PACKAGING Smurfit Kappa has launched a new, premium quality printing service, Smurfit Kappa Print Vision, which offers excellent clarity and litho quality print in support of promotional and brand building campaigns.
