The flight from Los A ngeles was o v e r b o o k e d . N o t o n e s p a r e s e a t. W hen I got to my assigned seat, 24D, it was already taken. T here were three seats in the row. A m other and tw o c h ild r e n w e re a lre a d y f illin g them. I fished for m y ticket stub, “ Did I re a d th is w ro n g ? ” I a s k e d lo u d ly enough for the m om to hear. “No, it says 24-D .” T he m o th e r sco o p ed up the tw oyear-old. “ C om e on in. T h a t’s y our seat. Tam m y here is a lap child. S h e’s m ore than tw o, but I lied about h er age— saved $370.” O ne m ore fu rtiv e g lance to ld me there was not another seat to be had. I settled into the seat vacated by twoy e a r - o ld T am m y . I fo u n d o u t h e r name soon because she was energeti cally kicking m e and scolding, “G et out. G et out.” She had new sneakers. The kind with lights in the heels that flash when you m ove your feet. She was adm iring her flashing feet as she kicked m y kneecaps. “ I c a n ’t c o n tro l th e se k id s ,” the m other said, trying to hold dow n the h o o f o f th e k ic k e r. “ I ’m p re g n a n t 2 ing routine. Las Vegas ruined my life. We had discovered that I had no Kleenex and had stuffed a cou ple o f tow els from the m e n ’s ro o m in to m y pockets (d o n ’t tell me th ere’s no God). W e a ll b a ttle d th e I felt so good about what I had breakfast trays until fi n a lly a f te r w hat done that I rewarded myself with s e e m e d an a g e th e a nonfat strawberry yogurt. s te w a r d e s s e s to o k th e m a w a y . T h e n a new challenge arose— th r e e r e a lly . P a m m y (Pam ela?) had to go to used to live in a four-bedroom , fourthe bathroom , Tammy had a bad dia bath hom e. N ow we live in a garage per, and m o th er had m o rn in g sic k apartm ent. My husband gam bled it all ness. W hile m om took the five-yearaway. B ending dow n I tried to start a friendly conversation. “Your e a r’s dirty,” she blurted. Sure enough, g rap e je lly on the e a r is one o f the hazards o f feeding a “terrible tw o” at 33,000 feet. P am m y o p en ed a n o th e r to p ic . “ I hurt my m other a lot.” “H ow did you do that, Pam m y?” “W hen I was in her tum m y. I was a v ery bad g irl. I h u rt m y m o m m y a lot.” “Oh, but Pam m y, that w a sn ’t your fault. You are not a bad girl. You are a good girl, a fine young lady. A nd a pretty one too.” T hose big brow n eyes sparkled as so o n as th a t g o o d n e w s so a k e d in. She sm iled, in relief it seem ed to me. I had another new friend. She already m issed her daddy, she told me. “Well, w hy d o n ’t w e phone h im ?” I suggest ed. We got m om 's perm ission. I took out m y V isa card and a ctiv ated the airp lan e phone. “ H e ’d b e tte r not be there,” the m other threatened, “ H e ’d better be g ettin ' that car fixed.” M om was right, no one answ ered. But I got c re d it fo r try in g . B y m id trip th e y were all three calling m e grandpa. We arrived in Salt Lake C ity where they had to change planes to get to St. Louis where the w om an’s grandm oth er was dying. They all bid “grandpa” a cheerful good-bye. “Sure w ish you w ere going to St. L ouis,” the m other s a id , “ I c o u ld su re u se y o u r h e lp . Thank you.” By now they w ere standing in the aisle ready to exit. A w om an in the seat in front o f us heard all the good b y e s a n d w ith h e r m o u th h a n g in g open for an em barrassingly long tim e she gasped, “ You m ean h e ’s not the real grandpa!” A t the sam e instant a passenger in the row behind us blurt ed, “ W h at? H e ’s n o t th e k id s ’ real grandpa?” I w as a hero. I felt so good about m y self that in the 20 m inutes before the plane took off again I strolled into the airport and rew arded m yself with a nonfat yogurt— strawberry. It w a s n ’t u n til the n ex t m o rn in g th a t I r e a li z e d th a t I h a d b a d ly screw ed up a m en to rin g m om ent. I a w o k e w ith an a w a r e n e s s o f th e L o rd ’s presence. You know how it is. You are barely aw ake, and as soon as you get conscious the first presence you sense is that o f Jesus. You start the day with prayer. I started to pray f o r T am m y a n d P a m m y a n d th e ir m om , w hose nam e I never learned. I h a d g o tte n no a d d re ss, no last n a m e . 1 h ad n o t w ritte n d o w n the phone number. I believe that the Lord had supervised the seat assignm ents. I had not been given 24-D by accident. The Lord had done His part, but I had screw ed up— again. If I had gotten full nam es, the ad dress o f that garage apartm ent I could h a v e p u t th e lo c a l C h u rc h o f th e N azarene in touch w ith them. I could h a v e p u t th e m in to u c h w ith th e chu rch too. F o r p ity ’s sake, I could h a v e sen t th em a H e ra ld su b sc rip tion! But m e— I got a straw berry yogurt. W hat if those little girls w ere to get a b irth d ay card every year from th eir airline grandpa? A nd special gifts at C h ristm a s o r w hen th ey g ra d u a te d from grade school? W hat if w hen I was in L.A. next . . . ? It was a m en toring m om ent that could have grown in to a m e n to rin g d e c a d e , o r a life time. I know the Lord is not going give up on Tam m y and Pam m y and their m om . Since Eunice used her missionary fur lough years for returning to NTS, we enjoyed the luxury of being exposed to the history-making events of NTS from 1945 to 1982: new programs, new faculty members, new textbooks, and new perspectives on ministry. We especially appreciated the de velopment of a school of missiology and the D.Min. program. These NTS contributions to our ministry have kept us constantly stretching for excellence. NAZARENE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY O C TO B K R I 4 9 4 3 Superintendent’s VIEWPOINT Our Times and God’s Timing by John A. K night p e a k in g o f th e c o m in g o f C h r is t in to th e w o r ld , th e apostle Paul wrote: “W hen the fulness o f the time was come, G od sent forth his Son . . . to redeem them that were under the law ” (G alatians 4:4-5). The phrase "fulness o f tim e” trans lates the w ord kairos, w hich m eans the m ost "opportune tim e,” the “right tim e.” Thus at the m om ent o f kairos, at the m ost advantageous tim e, God acted decisively in Christ. W hen all things w ere ready, G od responded to the fundam ental need of hum an h istory, the need fo r a S a v ior— and He sent Jesus. C ond itio n s were all in order for C h rist’s appear ance: (1) G reek philosophy had c u l m inated in the idea o f one God; (2) the Greek language was virtually uni versal, facilitating the com m unication of the gospel; (3) the m agnificent sys tem o f R om an roads w as com plete, m ak in g p o ssib le the tra v e l o f m is sionaries and the rapid spread of the gospel; and (4) the failure o f the pa gan p h ilo so p h ie s and m y stery re li gions to m eet the deep spiritual needs of the people left them with an insa tiable hunger for salvation. P aul w as a w are o f th e se h u m an conditions and declared joyously that in the m om ent of kairos, when every th ing w as ready, G od, in carn ate in Christ, stepped into human history. In our perso n al liv es, we e x p e ri ence m om ents o f kairos, a tim e for a c tio n . A y o u n g c o u p le , fa llin g in love, co m es to th is m o m en t. Som e evening at dinner conditions are “just right"— the m oon casts its silver rays a c ro ss the ta b le an d b rig h te n s the young la d y ’s co u n te n a n c e w ith the S 4 radiance o f love. There is affection in her eyes and m agnetism in her voice. F e e lin g th e su rg e o f ro m a n c e , the y o u n g m an cla sp s his lo v e r's hand and asks, “Will you m arry m e?” It is the m om ent of kairos, a oncein -a -life tim e o p p o rtu n ity th a t w ill never return for either o f them in just this way. H istory has its m om ents o f kairos. This last decade o f the 20th century is one o f them . Everything is right for G o d ’s decisive action, for the revival of His Church, for a m ighty visitation o f His Spirit. He is p o ised to break W h e n EVERYTHING WAS READY, GOD STEPPED INTO HUMAN HISTORY. the pow er o f canceled sin and set the captives free. He is ready to apply the B alm o f G ilead to our sick so ciety and bring healing to the nations. T h e m o m e n t o f k a ir o s is h e re . Everything is in readiness for revival. Walls that have stood for generations are com ing down. D ictatorial govern m ents are being shaken by the tum ul tuous cries for freedom . D ebilitating system s o f econom ics that have d e stroyed the hum an spirit are collaps ing and being replaced. H um anistic ed u c a tio n is being seen fo r w hat it is— a godless and destructive body of ideas based on selfishness. O ur cul tural and eth ical th eo ries are bank ru p t, le a v in g us e m p ty an d u n fu l filled. We f e e l the tru th o f A u g u stin e ’s words: "Thou has m ade us for thyself and our hearts are restless till we find our rest in T h e e." M en and women are hungry for God. Our tendency is to look on the dif ficulties rather than on the moment of kairos. T he d isc ip le s had the same problem . Jesus said to them : “ Say not ye. T h ere are yet fo u r m onths, and then co m eth h arv est? behold, I say unto you. Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white al ready to harvest" (John 4:35, empha sis added), iiterally "o v e rrip e ”— the m om ent o f kairos is rapidly passing you by. Oh, N azarenes, let us not be intimi d a ted by som e p rem a tu re paean of victory from the en e m y 's cam p that G od is dead or the gospel is irrele vant. The m essage o f heart holiness will be relevant as long as there are sinners and the world needs a Savior. L e t’s not be overcom e because of the enorm ity o f the harvest. Rather, let us pray for laborers to go into the har vest. The time is right, the moment of kairos is here. The harvest is almost o v e rrip e . W ith re n e w e d zeal, le t’s continue and intensify our work in the w hitened fields. The Lord of the har vest will renew our strength and pros per our labors. As a faithful reader o f the H erald, I ’m afraid I did not get to enjoy the A ugust issue. I ’m probably not the only Nazarene that has a revulsion o f snakes, even in pictures. We have a “rap group” in our church called “ D -C ure.” It is com posed o f three young men who dedicate their time and talents for the Lord. W ho know s how m any young people have been saved because o f their efforts. The couple pointed out that “Jesus Christ is the same yes terday, today, and forever.” This is true, but the tim es are changing. Teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, violent crim es, and suicide are on the rise am ong A m erica’s youth. Very few teenagers who have never been in a church are going “to be challenged by the w hole W ord o f G od.” We first need to reach out to them. Christian rap is one of the ways that we can do this. C hrist has given us from the H oly S pirit to announce the good new s o f the a variety o f gifts to use in the Church— apostles, prophets, gospel. You cannot m anufacture it. It cannot be organized evangelists, pastors, and professors. W e’re not engaged in a or m anipulated. I t’s a calling from God. You c an ’t even be contest o f greatness, but rather a cooperative enterprise of fitting all believers into perfectly functioning m ature men educated into being an evangelist. W hat is an evangelist?— a person w ho anno u n ces the good new s o f C hrist, who and women capable o f resisting error and standing up for preaches Christ. In other w ords, the gift o f an evangelist is the truth in word and deed. W e’re here because all o f us are one o f the great gifts that G od has given to His Church. engaged in some form o f evangelistic activity. W e’re here M 14 H e r a l d o f H o l in e s s iVorld IJune 2 8 , 1 9 9 4 And h e ’s just as im portant as a professor at the sem inary or a pastor in the largest or sm allest church in the country. T he S criptures call the evangelist an am bassador, a proclaimer, an advocate, an announcer o f good news. H e’s the one that presents the new s on the w orld netw ork. One of the greatest needs in the C hurch today is to recognize the gift o f the evangelist. The Message of the Evangelist First, 1 want to say a word about the m essage of an evan gelist. W hen Paul left the city o f C orinth, w hat did he say? "F or I determ ine not to know any thing am ong you, save Jesus C hrist, and him crucified” (1 C orinthians 2:2). That was his m essage. He could have used his intellectual abili ty. He could have talked on other subjects, but he didn't. I rem em ber I was in A ustralia, and we w ere holding a crusade in the great stadium , and I turned to the archbish op, M arcus Long, one o f the greatest m en o f G od it’s ever been m y p riv ile g e to know . He w as the p rim ate o f the C hurch o f E ngland for A u stralia. 1 said, “ M arcus, w hat should I preach on tonight ?” He said “ Preach on John 3:16, and preach on it every night y o u ’re here for three weeks. T h at’s the m essage G od needs to be heard in A ustralia.” If y o u ’d asked the apostle Paul “ How do you com m uni cate the gospel? W hat is your secret?” He w ould have said, “ I preach C hrist.” Paul knew that there was a built-in pow er in the m essage o f the gospel. And we need to know that when we stand up and proclaim the m essage, or when we com m unicate it to a person in individual counseling, that there is a pow er in the m essage o f the gospel, a built-in pow er that you d o n ’t have to w ork up. H um an logic, hu man eloquence, organizing big crusades will not do it. The S pirit’s work is vital. For as Paul says in 1 C orinthi ans 2:14: “The natural man receiveth not the things o f the S pirit o f G od: for they are fo o lish n e ss unto h im .” And w hen we proclaim the gospel to m any people outside of Christ, it’s foolishness, it’s ridiculous. Prayer Is Vital I’ve often been asked what is the secret o f my m inistry. I said, there are three secrets: prayer, prayer, and prayer. We had a m an that cam e w ith us in the very beginning. His nam e is W illis Haym aker. In those days, we d id n ’t have au ditorium s and stadium s. We had to build our own in town after town where we went. This was part o f the jo b o f the man w ho set up the m eetings. Not only did he have to get com m ittees and m usicians together, but he had to build a building. So, W illis w ould build these b u ildings seating anyw here from 10,000 to 20,000 people. His philosophy w as “ Y o u 'll n e v e r g et a n y w h e re in e v a n g e lism u n less everything you do is bathed in prayer.” So he put prayer in to everything. The carpenters prayed, the people w ho put the floors dow n or the saw dust or w hatever it was— he had them all praying. O c t o b f .r 1 9 9 4 B illy Graham Evangelistic Association A Message That Transcends Barriers O ne o f the m ost im p o rtan t tru th s I'v e learned as an evangelist preaching in over 80 countries is that the gospel cuts across every cultural, political, and social barrier. N ever change the m essage. We try to preach it in the context of the group to whom we are talking. If I come up on an illustration in some sermon outline and I ’ve used it som ewhere over here, and I ’m preaching in India or China, I try to get som ething that they are acquainted with that will illustrate a spiritual truth. But the spiritual truth is ex actly the same. The gospel never changes. The human heart d o e sn 't change. The hum an heart is filled w ith sin. We need reconciliation, and the only reconciliation is through the Cross and the Resurrection by repentance and faith. W hatever place that I ’m in, I know that the gospel is go ing to w ork, because G od m ade it for the w hole hum an race. The gospel speaks to people at a university, on a street com er, in a tribal village, a stadium, a cathedral, anywhere. The basic needs of the hum an heart are still the same. W hen I face an audience, I know that that audience al ready has been prepared by the Holy Spirit for my m es sage. I know that there is em ptiness and loneliness in the hearts o f m ost people. T h ey ’re not sure what they are lone ly for. They can be lonely with their wife, they can be lone ly in the m iddle o f m aking love, they can be lonely with a crow d— cosm ic loneliness. It’s loneliness for G od, and they d o n 't understand it. Then I know that there is guilt in every audience. They do n ’t know where it came from. They d o n ’t know what it is. It’s a load that they have to carry. And that prepares me to bring the gospel m essage of good news. Then, I know that there is a fear o f death. I have several close friends, right now, dying. W hen you reach my age, a lot o f people y o u ’ve known die, all around. I’m not afraid to die; I do n ’t like the process of dying, but I ’m not afraid of death. I ’m looking forw ard to it with great anticipation. Different Methods of Sharing the Gospel Then there are the various m ethods we use in com m uni15 eating the gospel. There are many. I d o n ’t think that m ass evangelism is the proper m ethod for everybody. There are a thousand different methods. It’s like the wheels o f a bicy cle— m any spokes going tow ard the center. But w hen we proclaim the gospel, we are to do it with authority based upon the Word of God. I have no trouble about the Scriptures being inspired, be cause m any years ago, I settled it by faith. I d o n ’t care what the scholars say, I know that this book is inspired o f God. And that is your authority. You have the authority o f the words o f Christ. You have the authority o f your own walk w ith the L ord. You have the au th o rity given to you by God— the Holy Spirit. Is G o d ’s Word like a burning fire in your soul and mine? I have to ask m yself that question. I t’s not always there. I get concerned about it som etim es, and I have to fall on my face before God and say, “O God, I w ant to be like Jerem i ah. I want Word to bum in my heart and to proclaim it with sim plicity.” We need to avoid the tem ptation to im press people with our learning, travels, intellectual abilities, cleverness, or our eloquence. The Bible says, “The com m on people heard him gladly” (M ark 12:37). W hy? B ecause they understood H im . He spoke th eir language. Part o f p reach in g w ith sim plicity m eans to preach w ith illu stratio n s o f sp iritual truth that people can understand. Don’t Complicate the Message Also, d o n ’t be afraid to repeat. Jam es Denny wrote that Jesus probably repeated him self more than 500 times. Now that encourages me, because I do a lot o f repeating. I used to have about 250 evangelistic sermons. I'm now dow n to about 8 or 10. W hen I stand up to preach, I can see my team and fellow colaborers w ondering which one I'm go ing to give tonight. And they know it’s going to be John 3:16, and it ought to be. We need to get back to the sim plicity o f the gospel be cause so m any people w ant C hrist, but they d o n ’t know how to find Him; they d o n ’t know what it is. They h aven't been told in sim ple, everyday language that they can under stand. Preach with Compassion Preach the gospel with love and com passion, even if you are preaching on hell or judgm ent. Let people feel the tears in your heart and the com passion in your soul. Jesus wept over Jerusalem . How often do we w eep over the cities that we go to? We have a responsibility to have com passion to poor people, the sick, the oppressed, the hungry, the out cast, those torn by terrorism and war, especially the believ ers. And there are believers all over the world where wars are going on today. We have a responsibility to the hurting people o f the w orld. R em em ber the apostles in A ntioch helped the suffering believers in Jerusalem w hom th e y ’d never seen or met. Holy Living And last, we are to com m unicate the gospel in the pow er o f the Holy Spirit. If we try to m anipulate or m anufacture success, or if we try to take credit for what God is doing, then we will be set aside by G od. But preach in g in the pow er of the Holy Spirit also m eans living in the pow er of the Holy Spirit. We must be m en and w om en who are pure 16 vessels for G o d ’s message. We saw som ething a few years ago that m ade all the headlines. They call some o f these people “televangelists.” It’s interesting to me how m any o f those people were not evangelists at all; they were pastors, or were presidents of institutions. They had other big w orks going on that pro vided their main support. But evangelists got the blam e. I think the evangelists that I know are som e o f the finest, cleanest, m ost dedicated all-out people for C hrist in the country, and I thank God for all o f you. But w hen people criticize evangelists, they usually at tack us along three lines: money, m orals, and pride. These are the same things Satan used with Eve and with Jesus. H e’s never changed his tactics. H e’s always after us, setting traps. Paul warned, “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” (1 C orinthians 10:12). Som e o f us here tonight say, “ I ’ll never do that. I ’ll never fall. I ’ll never fail.” We d o n ’t know. In a m om ent o f w eakness, the devil com es in mighty power, and if we d o n ’t have on the whole arm or o f God and stay prayed up, he can penetrate. A Great Opportunity for Evangelism This is a very wonderful day to be alive. I ’m glad that God allow ed m e to live to see a new daw ning for evange lism. Evil is very strong, but God is stronger. M an is on a self-destructive binge, but G od is still in the business of turning around the lives o f men and women. Perhaps w e’re in the last days. I rather think we are. The days spoken o f by Joel and Peter. There are m any w onder ful signs. I ’ve been reading in the papers and in the litera ture about the “True Love W aits” m ovem ent all over the country. T h e y ’re getting tens o f thousands o f com m itm ents from young people who say they will stay sexually pure. Then there’s Youth with a M ission, and Cam pus Crusade with their thousands o f people out proclaim ing the gospel in every type o f situation, with thousands o f people coming to Christ. T hen th e re ’s that m ovem ent called P rom ise K eepers. They had 62,000 m en together in Indianapolis the other day. And they are going to go from city to city and stadium to stadium this summer. B arna and G allu p p o lls ag ree th at 96 p e rc en t o f the A m erican people believe in a personal G od o f some sort; 82 p e rc e n t p ray at le a st o n ce a w eek; 56 p e rc e n t say th ey ’ve had a personal encounter with God; 38 percent say they have been bom again. W e’ve never had such high sta tistics in the history of the U nited States. This is a glorious moment! God is at work. I think historians will look back, if we live that long in history, and say this has been a period o f revival. W ouldn't it be som ething if you slept through the revival? Because God is m ightily at work. We should hold out hope to peo ple that Christ will com e and that He will keep His prom is es to us. It w o n ’t be long before we will all be at the feet of Jesus at that great M arriage Supper o f the Lamb. I'm look ing forw ard to that day. Chuck M illhuff: T h ere have b een ev an g elists o f v a ri ous sorts through the ages, b u t the itin eran t ev an g elist is a “Jo h n n y -co m e-lately .” I m ean, the itinerant ev an g elist has only b een around fo r a couple o f h u n d red years. Its idea is unique to A m erica. T his perso n , this role, evolved from the need s and circu m stan ces o f the A m erican set ting— along w ith cam p m eetin g s and altar calls. E u ro pean C hristian ity knew noth in g o f itin eran t evangelists before the A m erican church invented them . R ichard Strickland: M y m in istry I see as en h an cing the m in istry o f th e local pastor. So in m y p rep aratio n , I th ink abou t the cu ltu ral asp ects o f the ch u rch , its area, en v iro n m en t, etc. A n d I try g o in g w ith the flow o f w hat I feel that the p a s to r’s d o in g , and to m e w hen a p asto r says, “ D ick , y o u ’ve b een c len ch in g the nail th at I ’ve b een tryin g to d riv e fo r the last six m o n th s,” that, to m e, is part o f the su ccess fo r revival. Perdue: L e t’s ta lk n o w a b o u t p re p a ra tio n f o r revival, p a rtic u la rly y o u r p e r so n a l p re p a ra tio n f o r a m eeting. Smith: I send a rev iv al p rep aratio n letter to the church about tw o m o n th s in ad v ance. T h a t’s not ju st to help them prep are, it’s also to h elp m e prep are. W h en I learn the c h u rc h ’s g o al it h elp s m e to p lan and pray properly. F o r m y o w n sp iritu al p rep aratio n I spend o n e or tw o hours in prayer, p rep aratio n , and m ed itatio n b efo re every service. A lso, trav elin g so m u ch , I listen to a lot o f tapes and do a lot o f read in g . Strickland: I f he is n o t carefu l, th e e v an g elist can b e co m e an u n d iscip lin ed perso n . H e is his o w n b o ss— he has no d irect supervisor. I ’ve fo u n d that u n d er such a system i t ’s im p o rtan t to p lan y o u r tim e carefu lly — for p ra y er and study— an d stick to the p lan religiously. Part o f m y ow n d iscip lin e is to dig o u t tw o new serm ons per m onth. I ’m not a scholar, b u t I love to study. Bond: I agree w ith w hat h as b een said. I ’ve d isc o v ered that if I have ad eq u ately p ray ed and studied, asked fo r G o d ’s g u id an ce, an d m ade m y se lf availab le to the H oly S pirit, th in g s o ften go better. S uch p rep aratio n adds to m y ow n ex p e c ta n cy — an d th a t’s w hat is m issing som etim es. C an n ed serm o n s are no su bstitute fo r e x pectan cy an d sp o n tan eity in resp o n se to the Spirit. Strickland: B ut, y ou k n o w — and I ’m sure th at w e have all ex p e rie n c ed it— so m etim es the b est p rep ared -fo r rev iv al turn s o u t to be a flop. O cto ber 1994 Perdue: P erhaps the sovereignty o f G od com es in here. T he harvest m etaphor— planting and reaping— is often useful in talking about revival, but it d o e sn ’t say it all. G od in H is sovereignty sends revival in H is ow n tim e, w hen and how H e w ishes. I t’s not as m echanical as sow ing and reaping— G o d ’s sovereign w ill is involved. Strickland: Som etim es it is ju st a case o f the en th u si asm , energy, and p rep aration peaking before the ev a n g e list arrives. T hen the preparation is the revival. The p e o ple are then likely to ju st sit back and w ait for things to happen. T he cam p aig n then b ecom es anticlim actic. M illhuff: A s far as m y ow n personal preparation is concerned, I ask the L ord to give m e a new heart every w eek— like H e gave Saul a new heart w hen H e called him to be king. L ast w eek I had a heart for Salina, K ansas. N ext w eek I ’ll have a heart fo r L incoln, N eb ras ka. I ’m so involved in w here I am today, that i t ’s difficult for m e to th ink ahead. R e v i v a l w i l l c o m e w h e n g o d ’s PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PRAY ‘THY WILL BE D O N E-A T ANY COST.” ’ NELSON PERDUE I try to follow the leading o f the S pirit in every ser vice. I go to the platform about h a lf the tim e n o t know ing w hat I ’m go in g to preach and have w ith m e 50 serm ons th at I can preach from m em ory. B ut you d o n ’t know w ho is going to be there. T he H oly S pirit ju st know s, and som e days H e d o e sn ’t tell m e. Som etim es H e tells me w hile I ’m eating lunch. A nd it’s . . . it’s a m y stical thing. B ut a real ev an g elist lives that way. Strickland: I like w hat C huck said. O ften, I ’ll go to the platform w ith five o r six things going through m y m ind. I ’m tru stin g that the L ord w ill put His thum b in m y b ack and say this is the direction to go— w ith the flow o f the Spirit. Perdue: L et's talk a b o u t prea ch in g , the eva n g elistic serm on in particular. M illhuff: E vangelistic p reaching, bey o n d every th ing else, drives to a conclu sio n and d em ands a decision. T h a t’s the key. B illy G raham has used it on his radio b roadcast “T he H our o f D ecisio n ” all these years. P ri m arily, the fo rm u la o f ev an g elistic p reach in g is: create a problem , provide a solution, give an opportu n ity fo r p e o ple to take advantage o f that. A nd y our ability to create that distinction is the d egree to w hich y our ev an g elistic serm on w ill be successful. T h a t’s the form u la I have used all these years. Smith: I think the C h ristia n ’s b ig g est problem is pride and ego. T he essence o f sin is pride. T he essen ce o f sa l vation is hum ility. A m ain ingredient, then, o f the e v an gelistic serm on is the call from pride to hum ility. A call to hum ble o n eself before G od. Perdue: H o w do yo u know w hen a revival has been successfu l? W hat results sh o u ld eva n g elists a n d ch u rch es look fo r? Millhuff: First, the pasto r should feel that the revival has been a p ositive experience. Second, the revival should be a revo lu tio n ary ex p erien ce— the church or som e o f its people w ill n ev er be the sam e. Strickland: I t’s not unusual in som e ch u rch es to preach all w eek and not have a single unsav ed person in the audience until Sunday. In such a case, one w ill look 20 in vain fo r w aves o f seekers as the m easu re o f a re v iv a l’s success. H ow ever, if the people are stren g th en ed and spiritually energ ized and renew ed, the revival w as a suc cess. Perdue: T h a t brings up the m a tte r o f seekers. D o you fe e l th a t yo u r m in istry is ju d g e d by the n u m b e r o f se e k ers w ho com e fo rw a rd ? Bond: We all derive a certain m easure o f gratification w hen w e see people com e to the altar. B ut, I ’ve noticed o v er the last 20 years a ten dency to accept the truth, to listen, and not to respond to an invitation in a crisis m o m ent. We give an invitation every service. B ut, I think the indication o f w hat a true, heav en -sen t revival is com es w hen I get a letter from a p a sto r tw o m o n th s later, three m onths later, telling m e that o u r w ork to g eth er in the m eeting is still bearin g fruit. T he true, overall picture is that the hea ven -sen t revival that G o d brings is a result o f co o rdinating all the m in istries th a t are available. Strickland: A s has been often said, “ P roduction is the nam e o f the g a m e .” A n d w ith m any p astors, the nam e of the gam e is response at an altar. S om e p astors expect you to get a response ev en though they, them selves, have not been able to get th eir con g reg atio n to respond. I use the altar every night, b u t not ju s t fo r the unsaved. I like to see everybody, anybody, com e forw ard— it’s a step tow ard G od. If th e y ’ve m oved up and gotten a bet ter grip on G od, and G od has a b etter grip on them , I ’m for it. M illhuff: You d o n ’t w ant to abuse the altar service. I ’ve seen som e p reachers w ho created so m any kinds of needs that every b o d y in the service co u ld go to the altar. If y o u ’ve got a h eartache, if y o u ’ve got an unsaved loved one, if y o u ’ve got a b ro th er or a sister that needs God, if y o u ’re h aving trouble at w ork, I m ean, you can make en ough situations to w here anyone can com e to the altar. A nd you can fill the altar w ith that kind o f thing. I sup pose you go hom e at night feeling like y o u ’ve done a great thing. A n other thing that w e need to em p h asize regarding the altar service is that the H oly S pirit never com es to em b arrass anybody. E m b arrassin g potential seekers is unchristlike and does dam age to the cause. Strickland: B ack to the idea o f ju d g in g the success of a revival. S om etim es all the result you can see is that the pasto r and the p arsonage fam ily is uplifted and encour aged. S om etim es w e evan g elists are the only sounding board or co u n selo r a pasto r has. M illhuff: T h at is certain ly true. If you can lift the pas to r ’s load th ro u g h yo u r frien d sh ip , and th a t’s all that happens, you have no right to call the revival a failure. M any tim es chu rch es are in the grip o f dangerous per sonality conflicts. I ’ve seen m any a p asto r w eep when he saw people w ho w ere locked in such conflicts m eet at the altar and su rren d er th e ir hard feelings to G od. Isn’t that a heav en -sen t revival? T here are tim es, o f course, in this lonely calling that the only co n so latio n you have after a revival is that you know you did yo u r best. H e r a l d o f H o l in e s s Perdue: G en tlem en , w h a t are so m e o f the h in d ra n ces to revival? M illhuff: T elevision. F irst M o n d ay n ig h t football squeezed out the M onday n ig h t rev iv al service. N ow the S uperbow l has taken one S unday n ig h t o u t o f ev ery Ja n uary. W ho w ould sch ed u le a rev iv al on S u p erb o w l S u n day? B eyond that, I w o u ld say the g ro w in g evil o f the tim es, and w ith it the g ro w th o f h u m an ism , new age d o c trines, and, m ost recently, certain aspects o f the church grow th m o v em en t, have h ad a d ev astatin g effect upon the revival m eeting. on crisis conversion. I do preach on the crisis event o f second blessing H oliness. Perdue: M u sic is an im portant p a rt o f any N azarene service. Talk to m e a b o u t m usic f o r revival m eetings. Smith: M usic b ridges the gap betw een the secular and the spiritual, betw een a hectic w orld and the H oly W ord. M usic p repares the w ay fo r preaching. M illhuff: T he m usic should conclude w ithin 30 m in utes o f the beg in n in g o f the service. T h a t’s one o f the m ain issues. Bond: C ertain songs are appropriate fo r a concert, but not so appropriate for a revival service. Songs selected fo r special m usic in a revival service should focus on setting the stage fo r the opening o f the W ord o f G od. I t’s not to detract from the evangelist. O ne thing I noticed as a boy grow ing up in the church w as that too often there w as that com petition betw een the tw o. Smith: The song ev angelist should do the singing and leave the preaching to the pastor. Bond: T he tw o should w ork as a team . I t’s crucial. T he song ev angelist should select m usic that is positive and praise-centered. Som etim es the m usic is enough. G od m ay so m ove on the service in a song that there is no need to preach. I t’s all been said. Smith: T he m usic should include songs that the p e o ple can relate to. T h a t’s w hy w e need so m any new songs. M any traditional songs are so well know n, so steeped in tradition, that we m iss the truth we are singing about. C horuses and hym ns o f praise m ay be needed to produce a heartfelt experience. Perdue: W hat can the church do to affirm yo u a n d e n hance y o u r m inistry as an evangelist? E v a n g e l is t ic p r e a c h in g , b e y o n d EVERYTHING ELSE, DRIVES TO A CONCLUSION AND DEMANDS A DECISION." CHUCK MILLHUFF Perdue: W hat a b o u t p re a c h in g H o lin ess? A nd d o n ’t have any big altar pulls fo r a m o n th p rio r to the m eeting. Bond: I believe the old adage is true: “ If w e fail to plan, w e are p lanning to fail.” T he b est plans start with intercessory prayer. A d equate pray er p rep aratio n w ould help trem endously. M illhuff: I w rote a book titled The R ev iva l M eeting in the 20th C entury, w hich I w orked very hard on and is a CLT book that deals w ith the various aspects o f prepara tion. I send it out to every church before I get there. I th ink it helps a lot. Strickland: O ne o f the m ost affirm ing things that h appens— and it h ap pens now and then— is fo r the church o r the pasto r to rem em b er m y w ife. W hen a pas to r stands up and an n o unces, “T onight w e are going to take a love offering fo r the e v a n g e list’s w ife ,” that really helps. W hen you com e hom e o ff the road you have that special gift fo r yo u r w ife— it m akes a guy feel real good, and it m akes being an e v a n g e list’s w ife a little easier for yo u r d earest friend in the w orld. M illhuff: B illy G rah am said that G od gives a unique spouse to anyone H e calls into ev an g elism . T h at has been true in m y case. T he fam ily life o f an evangelist is ex trem ely unusual, and the e v an g elist pays a trem endous price at this point. I am not claim ing that 1 have already grasped all o f C hrist nor have I a l ready reached perfection, but I am continuing to pursue it, to see i f I m ight fu lly grasp him because 1 have been fu lly grasped by C hrist Jesus (Philippians 3:12).* e o p l e w i t h g r e a t g o a l s are often hard for the rest o f us to handle. We sniff at the w ould-be high achiever and m utter, “W ho does he think he is?” We assum e that the person could never reach such high goals. On the other hand, we scoff at the hum ility o f great achievers. “O h, she is just being m odest,” we declare as a way o f accusing the truly successful per son o f false modesty. We fear accept ing as genuine the hum ility o f highachieving people. Perhaps their lack of pretension convicts us o f the sm allness o f our own goals. Paul seem s to have know n some Philippi an believers who had trouble dealing with his high spiritual aspirations. In Philippians 3:9-11, the apostle stated his am bitious goal o f finding union with Christ in our L ord’s death and resurrection. The follow ing verses at tem pt to clarify the m eaning o f P au l’s goal. He did not want to be m isunder stood and accused o f either arrogance or false humility. Verse 12 begins this clarification, "I am not claim ing that I have already grasped all of Christ.” This phrase has P 24 the day-by-day nature o f relationship with C hrist offers us unending oppor tunities for grow th and developm ent. P au l’s conclusion is that he will continue pursuing this goal, but he in tensified his language in the final part o f verse 12. From the verb “grasp,” he shifted to a m ore intense com pound o f that verb w hich we can translate “fully grasp.” Paul was will ing to rejoice in and testify to the C hristlikeness that he had already grasped. But the fullness o f Christ beckoned him on to experience the depths o f spiritual grow th. His m oti vation was not false hum ility to avoid suspicion o f arrogance. He w anted to fully grasp C hrist because he had been fully grasped by Christ. W hen w e finally com prehend that C hrist fully know s us and com pletely loves us anyway, no other m otivation or explanation is necessary for our C hristian walk. We w ant to love, obey, and serve Him because He has already loved and served us. There is no arrogance or false hum ility in our intense desire to be united with Christ. A nyone w ho questions that has not yet com prehended what it m eans to be fully grasped by Christ. F o r f u r th e r stu d y : (1) R ead 1 C orinthians 13:8-13 as a com m en tary on Philippians 3:12-16. What are the points o f sim ilarity between been translated several ways. The G reek word for “grasped” has several m eanings, but no object for “grasped” appears in the original text. In fact, the Greek looks almost as if Paul’s secre tary slipped back into shorthand for verse 12. However, the subject of verses 9-11 was knowing Christ, and the word “grasp” includes the m eaning o f m entally com prehending. So it is best to assum e that Paul was still talk ing about knowing Christ in verse 12. The apostle’s am bition was such personal know ledge o f the Lord that he w ould actually share in C h rist’s death and resurrection. Som e of P au l’s com m ents in his other letters show that he believed he was experi encing that kind o f union with Christ. H owever, he did not want the Philip pians to think that he was arrogantly claim ing equality with Christ. N either w ere these w ords an expression o f false hum ility. In reality, Paul still had m uch to learn and experience in his relationship with Christ. He un derstood very well that no hum an b e ing ever fully com pre hends the full reality o f Christ. The second phrase in verse 12 clarifies P au l’s thought further. The Christian perfection is not a G reek text can be most condition one has, but a life simply translated, “O r not one lives. that 1 have already be com e perfect.” This is not a denial o f the doctrine of ____ Christian perfection, for Paul w ill affirm perfec tion in verse 15. It is a curriculum requiring six weeks of classroom train ing under college professors. Each session of the school lasts for four days. Two sessions are held each year (January and October) for three years. The goal of the K-Church Project is to build 50 Churches of the Nazarene with a membership or attendance of 1,000 by the year 2000. A fter sleeping e r e m p lo y e e , “ D o n ’t you for a few hours, I aw oke to notice a tightly w rapped, sm all object on the think it’s tim e to take in ventory? We h av en ’t done nightstand. Finally, the day arrived for the inventory to be taken. Every item in the store had to be cou n ted — all the g ro ce ries on the sh elv es and in the basem ent. The highw ay was closed, and we sat for tw o hours only six m iles from a warm room and a good bed. M ost fam ilies have been sp lit u p .” Corrie thought, “ I can do that.” Betsy continued, “G ive thanks that som e how the guards d id n ’t check our be longings, and our Bible is w ith us.” Corrie gave thanks for the fleas. Later they discovered that the only reason they were not harm ed or m olested by the guards were because they were so repulsed by the fleas they would not enter the w o m en ’s living area. Daniel Casey and D. Eugene Simp son were elected to the General Board by a mail ballot announced July 28, ac cording to Jack Stone, general secretary. The ballots were cast by District Advi sory Board members of all the districts on the Southeast U.S. Region. Casey has served as s e n io r p a s to r o f A t lanta, Ga., First Church of the N azarene since 1988. He is an alumnus o f O liv e t N a z a re n e College and N azarene Theological Seminary. Casey fills the vacancy Casey left by the resignation of Donald Wellman. Tornado Strikes Pennsylvania Community A late-night tornado that killed three persons affected a number of Nazarenes in Royersford, Pa., July 27. Royersford is located 30 miles west of Philadelphia. The storm struck shortly after m id night, according to Paul Thornhill, pas to r o f R o y e rsfo rd C h u rc h o f the Nazarene. The tornado caused $25,000 in damage to the roof of the church and adjacent parsonage. Five families in the church su ffered e x ten siv e dam ages, mainly to their yards. “The tornado broke and toppled trees that were hundreds o f years old and ripped up yards,” said Thornhill, who w as alo n e at hom e w hen th e storm struck. “ It was over in about 40 seconds,” Thornhill said. “It sounded like a train.” Thornhill said the tornado affected an area about 150 yards w ide and four m iles long. M ost o f the dam age o c 26 curred in a newly developed neighbor hood where 30 homes were destroyed and three persons were killed. Damages from the storm were estim ated at $25 million. “If the tornado had shifted 20 feet, it would have struck our parsonage direct ly ,” T h o rn h ill sa id . “ If it had shifted another 50 feet in the other di rection, it would have struck our daugh ter’s home.” Thornhill said forecasters described the tornado as a level-three on a scale of five. “They said there was no record of a tornado in this area before and that it was very unusual for us to see one of this size,” he said. Thornhill said the church properties were covered by insurance. He added that the buildings were patched and are usable. “ It is a miracle that some of the trees that fell d id n 't hit the hom es o f our p a rish io n e rs,” T hornhill said. “They could have done much more dam age, but they didn't.” Lexington Nazarenes Respond to Local Disaster T he v io le n t re m n a n ts o f tro p ic a l storm Beryl hit downtown Lexington, S.C., Aug. 16, causing extensive dam age and several injuries. Several Naza renes were affected by the storm. Stephen Sm ith, pastor o f Shepherd Community Church of the Nazarene in Lexington, visited the affected areas with Jam es B earden, South C arolina d is tr ic t s u p e rin te n d e n t, in o rd e r to assess the damage. Joe Swafford, district coordinator for Nazarene Disaster Response, met with Smith the next day to help evaluate the crisis. Sw afford, a N azarene laym an from G re e n v ille , S .C ., is a 17-year v e te ra n o f the R ed C ro ss d is a s te r service. Though several Nazarenes were d irectly involved in the crisis, there were no injuries among Nazarenes and no loss of Nazarene property, according to Tom Nees, national NDR director. A N azarene wom an, Faye Chnupa, w ho o w n s the L e x in g to n C h ristia n B o o k s and G ifts , saw h er b u sin e ss destroyed by the storm. The high winds lifted the roof o ff the V illage Square Shopping C enter, causing all but one store in the center to be destroyed. “The store was totally devastated— a com plete loss,” Sm ith said. “ She had a lre a d y s to c k e d h e r sto re fo r the Christmas season.” Nazarene Clay Mitchell observed the tragedy from his dow ntow n business. He told Smith that the storm sounded like a locomotive coming out of the sky. “ It looked like a war zone,” Smith said. “ It is am azing that nobody was killed based on the amount of property damage. We believe our weekly prayers for our town really made a difference in this tragedy.” New Method for Filling G.S. Vacancies V acancies in the office o f general su p e rin te n d e n t b etw e en G eneral A ssem blies are now filled by a twothirds vote of the General Board rather th an by v o te o f the d is tr ic t su p e r intendents. The change is the result of a constitutional am endm ent ratification announced A ug. 25 by G eneral Sec retary Jack Stone. Once 116 regular and mission districts concurred with the action o f the 23rd General A ssem bly, the constitution of the Church of the N azarene was offi cially amended, according to Stone. The o rig in al reso lu tio n was in tro duced to the 1993 General Assembly by the Northwest Oklahoma District. It was approved unanim ously by the Special Judicial Committee and by a two-thirds v o te o f the G en e ral A ssem b ly . The a c tio n w as th e n fo rw a rd e d to the districts for ratification. The amendment changes the language of Manual paragraph 31.5. It now reads as follows: The General Assembly shall elect by ballot fro m among the elders o f the C h u rch o f the N a za re n e as many g e n era l su p erin te n d e n ts as it may deem necessary, who shall constitute the B o a rd o f G en e ra l Superinten dents. A ny vacancy in the office of general superintendent shall be filled by a tw o-thirds vote o f the General Board o f the Church o f the Nazarene. H e r a l d o f H o l in e s s Nazarene Writers Examine Ministry More than 200 writers, editors, educa tors, and ministers convened July 27-30 at M idA m erica N azarene C ollege for the first Nazarene W riters Conference in eight years. Featured speakers includ ed Bill Myers, creator of “M cGee and M e,” and W es Tracy, H erald o f H oli ness editor. Conferees gathered from all parts of the U.S. and Canada, representing 26 states and/or provinces. The w eek’s ac tivities included plenary sessions, work shops, common meals, and informal late night sessions. The conference them e was: “W rite to Sell, W rite to Publish, Write to M inister.” A faculty of 24 persons led more than 60 workshop sessions during the confer ence. Topics for workshops were great ly expanded from sim ilar past events. These included tracks for both begin ning and advanced writers. Venues also were available for m agazine and book writers. Specialty writers were able to focus through tracks offered in teaching and m in istry , ch ild ren and youth, or music and drama. “A ttendance and enthusiasm far ex ceeded our expectations,” said Bonnie P erry , co n fe re n ce d ire c to r. “ A ll the feedback and comments have been very positive. We are excited that the confer ence was so well received.” The conferen ce was attended by a higher percentage of men than those of the past, according to conference staff. NWMS and NCM Pilot Project for Mozambique NW M S is netw orking with N azarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc., to meet the p ressin g need for m edicines and medical supplies in Mozambique. The program utilizes the local church infra structure of NWMS and the relief deliv ery systems of NCM. T he p ro g ram is in itia ted by local NW M S chapters who elect to coordi nate the collection and packing of need ed items within their churches. All med icines and supplies are nonprescription and can be purchased at any pharmacy. The local church collects the provi sions into standard-sized boxes. The boxes are then sent to a designated tem porary storage facility. At the storage site, the MedCare Paks are prepared and packed for ocean freight shipm ent. A $10.00 donation per box is sent to the general treasurer to offset the cost of shipment to Mozambique. MedCare Paks for Mozambique will be packaged for ocean freight shipment in November 1994. “W e are all very excited about the potential for opening the door for com passionate evangelism by means of the MedCare Pak concept,” said Linda W e ber of N azarene Com passionate M in istries, Inc. “There is great potential for village health-care training, as well as for p roviding im m ediate disaster re sponse.” M o z a m b iq u e is the firs t ta rg e te d world area for the new program. Nazarene Health Care Boasts Low Costs Adm inistrative costs for the Nazarene H ealth and H o sp italization Program (NHHP) are 50 to 70 percent less than those incurred by other private and pub licly funded program s, according to Don W alter, Pensions and Benefits di rector. The April 18, 1994. issue of National U nderw riter reported the results of a study comparing administrative costs of governm ent program s (M edicare and Medicaid) versus those of private health insurance. The study found that private insurers spend an average of 16.2 cents on adm inistration for every dollar of benefits paid. Government spending av eraged 26.9 cents on administration for every benefit dollar paid. In contrast, the NHHP spends an av erage of eight cents on administrative services for each dollar of benefits paid. In relation to other private insurers, NHHP operates at one-half of the cost. C om pared to governm ent program s, NHHP operates with 70 percent less in administrative costs. “What the business world calls ‘cost m inim ization’ we call ‘good stew ard ship' in the church.” W alter said. "The Pensions and Benefits office is commit ted to maintaining this high standard of stewardship in order to m aximize our service to the church.” 27 Compassionate Ministries Active on Campuses Tom Nees, director of U.S./Canada Com passionate Ministries, emphasizes the im portance of cooperation between institu tions in meeting human needs. Representatives from 11 college cam puses in the United States and Canada met July 22-23 in Kansas City for the first N azarene C om p assio n ate M in istries (NCM) Campus Liaison Meeting. They met with leaders from Church Growth, World Mission, NCM, NWMS, and NYI to discuss compassionate ac tivities on Nazarene campuses. The meeting sought to facilitate in teraction between the various organi zations and to clarify com passionate ministries services and information, ac cording to Tim M astin, C ollege/U ni versity liaison for NCM. Each of the college presidents, in consultation with U S A /C a n a d a N CM D ire c to r T om Nees, appointed v olunteers on each campus to act as liaisons to NCM. “These liaisons serve as a link be tween NCM and the campus communi ty, including faculty, students, and ad m inistration,” Mastin said. "They not only facilitate periodic NCM Regional Conferences on the campuses but also promote and inform the campus com munities about NCM programs and op portunities— locally, nationally, and in ternationally.” The meeting also included evalua tion of the recent regional conferences held throughout the United States. Houston Thrust Progressing NWMS Supports Ministerial Education Henry Mills has been appointed local coordinator of the Thrust to the City of Houston, according to J. W. (Bill) Lan caster, Houston District superintendent. In this post, he will have the responsi bility for running the program, which officially begins next January. The ap pointment is for two years. Prior to this, he p astored N orth L ittle Rock First Church for 10 years. He has pas tored other churches on the Tennessee, Hawaii, Alabama, Georgia, and South ern Florida Districts. “He is an outstanding pastor, a good public relations person, an excellent administrator, and a good leader, who will bring his skills to this task,” Lan caster said. Lancaster said the work of the Hous ton T h ru st is p ro g ressin g w ell. Jim Palm er has resigned the pastorate of Pasadena, Tex., First to accept the chal lenge of starting a church in the Hous ton suburb of First Colony. "This is an upper crust community,” said Lancast er. “One o f our laym en has invested $52,000 to help start this church.” The church plans to meet in a school in the heart of the com m unity where some homes are valued at $1 million. “We launched the Bethlehem Black C hurch three weeks ago,” L ancaster said. “Jim Bums, our new pastor there, is off to a big start. He had 35 persons on the first Sunday.” A H isp a n ic c h u rch w as re c e n tly launched in the Denver community on the southeast side of the city. Gunter, general NWMS direc tor. The General NWMS Council select ed a project that will provide scholar ships for needy ministerial students at N azarene world m ission educational institutions. The goal for the interna tional offering was set for $480,000. “W hat we, as a com m unity, do in this project is very important," Gunter sa id . “ T he c h u rc h w ill n e v e r be stronger than its educational institu tions that train leaders and laity.” The them e for the project will be “W orld C la ss.” O ffering goals have been given to each district. International Lay Ministry Congress Announced The Center for Lay Ministry has begun receiving registrations for an Interna tional Congress on Lay Ministry to be held January 6-8. 1995, at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City. The congress is being promoted as a call to recover the full partnership of laity and clergy in the global ministry o f the C hurch o f the N azarene. The MANC regional team finished second, follow ed by the SNU region and the PLNC region, respectively. Collins Continues Recovery Robert Collins, director of Nazarene Theologi cal Seminary in Brazil, continues a slow recov ery from a nearly fatal g u n sh o t w ou n d s u f fered May 31. Since Ju ly 28, he has been on a hom e re c o v e ry p r o gram, which includes receiving antibi otics intravenously every day. A nurse atten d s to him at his s o n ’s hom e in Pataskala, Ohio. The gunshot was suffered during an attack on Collins in front of his campus home. No suspects are currently in cus tody. C ollins described the assailants as two short young men w earing khaki factory uniforms and brown ski masks. They were hiding in shrubbery in front of the home. Collins returned from the library around 8 p . m . when the two men approached him on his porch. Strangely, the men asked for Collins’ keys instead of money or jewelry. Later the next morning, the full set of keys was discovered near the back of the seminary property The men fired at Cbllins three times. One shot entered C o llin s’ abdom en, damaging his aorta and intestines. Collins lost five pints of blood on the way to the hospital. His wife, Frances, called ahead to their doctor, who quick ly assembled a team of surgeons. The doctors, upon exam ining the injuries and diagnosing pneumonia, were doubt ful he would recover. During his third of five early surg eries, technicians reported that an “un usual presence” was sensed in the oper ating room, according to Mrs. Collins. Shortly afterward, C ollins' lungs were clear of pneum onia, and his recovery began. “The family of God around the world has b een so b e a u tif u l,” said M rs. Collins. “It is during these times that you realize exactly what your church is all about. Hands of love were extended so freely to us. We appreciate the con tinued prayer for Bob's recovery.” 29 Church Sets Sights on 2001 of events. Two New Pastors in Indy Strategies are currently being d ev el oped to reach a new church grow th goal of 15,000 churches by 2001, ac cording to M ichael R. Estep, Church Extension Ministries director. Estep has reached an agreement with Mark R. Moore, president of Adopt-aBible Study, to assist in sponsoring Bible studies for the purpose of starting and organizing new churches. Adopt-a-Bible Study is currently as sisting a new work on the N orthern California District. It is sponsored by the Sunset District Community Devel opment Organization under the leader ship of Michael R. Funk. M oore’s organization recently met w ith M erlin P ro v an ce and the A p palachian Strategy C om m ittee. They discussed the potential of establishing Bible studies throughout Appalachia in support of new church development in that underevangelized area of the U.S. An agreement also has been reached with the Eurasia Region for a number of Bible studies to be sponsored in In dia, according to Estep. The launching of the effort will coincide with the In dia N ational P a sto rs’ C onference in N o v e m b e r 1994. In a d d itio n , R. So, $1,000 per revival to the e v an g e list is still far below w hat the average pastor is being paid in cash salary. I think that this $ 1,000 figure needs to be established in the m inds o f churches and boards as a m inim um . T here are som e that cannot. T here are som e that w ill not. A nd in those cases, evangelists w ill still go to those churches. I have been to churches this last year that d id n ’t pay $1,000. Smith: W hatever a church establishes as its m in i m um , the ev angelist needs to be inform ed w hat it is at the tim e o f the call. Strickland: A nother aspect o f this is the fact that al m ost no churches schedule a revival m eeting during D e cem b er anym ore. T hat m akes for som e lean C hristm ases w here the evangelist lives. N o one know s how m uch it m eans w hen the churches w here y o u ’ve preached during the year rem em b er you and send along a C hristm as check. Millhuff: I w ant to encourage young people w ho m ay be considering a call to evangelism . It is an exciting, if not at tim es terrifying, kind o f w ork to do. But I have no regrets, m y w ife has no regrets, m y children have no re grets. A nd it is a lonely life in som e respects, but it is very rew arding. I w ould challenge those to w hom G od is calling to do this w ork to seek out a real ev angelist and let that evangelist m entor you. Strickland: I liked his com m ent regarding fu lfill m ent. Y ears ago, a pastor turned to m e and said we have a Jew ish fam ily in the congregation tonight. T hey cam e to the altar and w ere saved. N ow the three kids have gone through O livet. M y television set was on last June when the m ajor netw orks preem pted regular program m ing to follow the LA PD as it cautiously fo l low ed a white Ford Bronco dow n the freew ays o f Southern C alifornia. I sat, m agazine in hand, trying not to watch. My husband asked me, "H ow can you read w hile this is happening? M y heart is in my throat!” I answ ered rather high-m indedly, “ I d o n ’t think w atching a suicidal m an m ake the d e cision betw een life and death is great entertainm ent. This is really m orbid.” D espite my lofty ideals, I w atched m ore than I read. A few w eeks later, I had to limit the num ber o f tim es I turned on the television or picked up a new spaper to drink in m ore details o f the prelim inary hearing for O. J. Sim pson. The national obsession with this sad crim e captivated me too. O ne night, I lay aw ake trying to figure out the how s and w hys o f this all-too-real w ho dunit. As I did 1 felt anxiety, fear, and confusion. If this crim e was indeed one o f dom estic violence, how could love go so wrong? And w hat was to happen to those tw o young children? Tired o f thinking o f m urder and m adness, 1 tried to focus on more pleasant thoughts, but the m agnet of dark curiosity kept draw ing m y m ind O ctober 1994 claim ing responsibility for personal actions. W hatever is pure. Purity focuses on our m otivations and conduct. A pure conscience is a clean conscience. A pure act is one that is done out o f a heart o f love. W hatever is lovely. Lovely things or people are pleasing, winsom e, beloved, and desired. Truly lovely acts bring out love in ourselves and others. W hatever is adm irable— excellent or praiseworthy. Things that fit in this category build rather than de stroy. They take into account G o d ’s blessings as well as the w orld’s evil. They glorify G od and reflect hope rather than despair or cynicism . This verse ends with the phrase think about such things. To think about som ething m eans to reflect and allow it to shape and influence our actions and conduct. I concluded that for m e, there were far better things to which I could give my m ental ener gies than a sad and terrible crime. Later that week after consciously focusing my m ind on things that m ea sured up to this list o f ideals, I heard my father teaching my toddler an old Sunday School chorus. She delight edly put her hands over her eyes as he sang, “ Be careful little eyes what you see / Be careful little eyes what you back. I prayed for peace o f m ind and instantly, as if a key was punched on an internal com puter, a scripture verse, m em orized long ago flashed on m y m ental screen: “W hatever is true, w hatever is noble, w hatever is right, w hatever is pure, w hatever is lovely, w hatever is adm irable— if anything is excellent or praisew orthy— think about such things” (Philippians 4:8, NIV). The clarity o f this scripture refo cused m y m ind on the true, noble, right, pure, lovely, adm irable, excel lent, and praisew orthy things o f that week rather than the sensational and violent things I ’d been pouring into my head com plim ents o f the media. Soon I peacefully slept. L ater that w eek as I read through Philippians, it becam e clear that this verse was a tool that I could use to foster right thinking and better culti vate the m ind o f Christ. The law ns are turning brow n, flow ers are w ithering, young trees are stressed. The local lawn and garden w isdom insists that quick, shallow w aterings will not do. To do the job right, tim e m ust be taken to let the w ater soak dow n deep, to the roots. Increasingly, my h e a rt’s desire is to take tim e to so live in this prayer that it can soak to the depths o f m y soul. Last time, our attention was on the beginning o f the L o rd 's Prayer and the first petition, "O u r Father in heav en. hallow ed be your nam e” (M at thew 6:9, NIV). This m onth, we turn to the second and third requests, “your kingdom com e, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (v. 10. NIV). The m ore tim e we spend in this blessed prayer, the m ore we real ize we have been given som ething sim ple and yet profound. To pray for G o d 's kingdom to com e is pretty "h ead y ” business. One m eaning o f the phrase is the end of history, the L o rd 's final return. A n other is the kingdom o f G o d ’s reign w ithin my own heart and life. A third aspect is the prayer for G o d ’s king dom to com e to the w hole earth, to our world. At the core o f praying for the T O c to ber 1994 done,” can be easily m isunderstood. This is not a prayer of resignation or fatalism . Taken in the context of Scripture (2 Tim othy 2:4; M atthew 18:14; John 6:40; and Ephesians 1:910), the will of G od in this passage refers to His divine plan o f salvation, to His deepest desire for His creation. It is His will to save. “ In the context o f a world actually w andering from G od, it is His saving will that lies at the center o f this petition” (G. R. Beasley-M urray, Jesus and the K ing dom o f God, Eerdm ans, 151). It is striking that we do not pray in abstractions here. This is not some shapeless, ill-defined generality. The prayer is quite precise and with un canny accuracy, boom erangs on us. W hat we are really praying is that this saving will o f God may be w orked out in the world, in those who live next door, and in our own hearts too. W hat a prayer! These two petitions, “your king dom com e, your will be done,” invite K ingdom is the realization that the K ingdom is Jesus. As Frederick B runer puts it, “In the final analysis the kingdom is the king himself; C hrist is G o d ’s M essianic kingdom in person, and this kingdom is presented to us in infinite richness in Scripture" (The Christhook, W ord, 246). From the m anger to the em pty tom b, we see the K ingdom in the life o f Jesus. God has becom e flesh, and the K ingdom is am ong us! This petition triggers a sobering thought. W hen we pray for His king dom to com e, we are praying that our ow n hum an kingdom s will be utterly destroyed. If my kingdom s are in the way, they m ust go. And there are so m any o f them! K ingdom s o f busi ness, profession, self-interest, and on it goes. As Jan Lochm an pinpoints it, “We have to consider that in the G ospels hum an decisions regarding the kingdom o f G od are often bound up with small but very painful decisions in everyday life” (The Lord's Prayer, Eerdm ans, 58). Further, when I pray for His kingdom , I pray with To pray for God’s kingdom to hope for the future. No m atter what the ten come is pretty “heady” business. o 'c lo c k new s says about the desperate condition of our w orld, there is hope in the com ing o f G od's king dom , w hich can change our situation. John Wesley believed us to ask such questions as, Lord, in the radical optim ism o f grace to how can I facilitate the coming o f the extent he changed his w orld and Your kingdom? To what extent have 1 resigned to accepting things as they averted revolution, and so can we! We are liberated from fatalism; the are? Christian Teens Take National Abstinence Pledge More than 20,000 teenagers g a th e re d a ro u n d 2 0 0 ,0 0 0 pledge cards in Washington, D .C ., July 29 asking God for help in maintaining sex ual a b stin e n c e u n til m a r riage. Christian youth across the nation wore w hite rib bons that day as a sign of solidarity with others m ak ing the pledge. T he p le d g e c a rd s w ere attached to individual stakes and planted into rows on the N ational Mall betw een the Capitol and the Washington Monument. They were com pleted by teens not in atten dance. Each card stated: "B eliev ing that true love w aits, I make a commitment to God, m yself, my fam ily, those I date, my fu ture m ate, and my fu tu re c h ild re n to be sexually pure until the day I en ter a co v enant m arriage relationship.” The national abstin en ce celebration was held in con junction with the Youth for Christ Super Conference on y o u th e v a n g e lis m . John If y ou t o o k a c o o l - o f - t h e e v e n in g stroll around St. C atherine's M onastery near Mount Sinai in Egypt, you would bump into a strange pair o f caskets. Several cen turies ago. tw o young men who were part of that m onastic com m unity took a vow to devote their lives to perpetu al prayer and adoration. It was their intent to spend every m om ent of every day o f every week and month and year in praise and prayer. To accom plish this vow, they were assigned to adjoining room s and were fastened together at the wrists by a length of chain. The plan was for one to pray and the other to sleep. From the m om ent they began, they neither saw nor spoke to each other again. Their only contact was the chain that ran through the wall. W hen one was finished with his prayers, he would tug on the chain to awaken the other. A tug back meant that the other had begun, and the first man could rest. Back and forth they prayed for decades until they died. In honor of their devotion, their rem ains lie side by side in caskets still united by the same chain. This is a rem arkable story o f com m itm ent, but it m isses the point of prayer. Eyestone attended Bethany Nazarene College and Califor nia Graduate School of Theolo gy. He received the D.D. from N azarene B ible C o lleg e in 1993. Eyestone and his wife, Mar garet, have two children, Cindy and Timothy. Skiles Announces Retirement Paul S k ile s. 67, has a n nounced that he w ill step dow n from his p o st as C om m unica tio n s D iv i sion director by the close of 1994. S k iles has se rv e d at Nazarene Headquarters since 1960, when he was elected e x e c u tiv e se c re ta ry o f the N azaren e Y oung P e o p le ’s Society by the General NYPS C onvention. W hen changes w ere m ade in 1968, Skiles became the executive secre tary o f the D ep artm en t of Youth, where he served until 1973. During this same peri od. he was d irecto r o f ser vices to chaplains and m ili tary personnel. In 1973. he b ecam e d ire c to r o f M edia Services, a post he held until he was elected director of the Communications Division in 1989. A la y m a n , S k ile s w as youth activities director for the Northern California Dis trict when he was elected in 1960. While in northern Cali fornia, he used his skills as a m usician, athlete, and com m unicator to encourage and give vision to young people. “My main concept of min istry w as th a t we n eed to channel the energies of youth in to the to ta l e v a n g e listic mission of the church," Skiles said. Skiles was the originator of the concept of Youth in Mis sion. w hich was o rig in ally called "Nazarene Evangelistic A m b a ssa d o rs." The initial p ro g ra m ,' la u n c h e d in the sum m er o f 1963, included two teams o f N azarene col leg e stu d e n ts w ho w ere involved in tw o m onths of service on a m ission field. Many of those students went on to find areas of ministry in the denomination. "Everything Paul has done has been c a rrie d out w ith firs t- c la s s e ffic ie n c y and skill," said General Superin tendent Jerald D. Johnson, who was elected with Skiles as a "youth-at-large” repre s e n ta tiv e on the G en era l NYPS Council in 1952. "His life has re fle c te d all the church believes and teaches.” When asked about his hope for the future of the Church of the Nazarene, Skiles said his advice is, "Be believable.” A native of Orange, Calif., Skiles served in the navy and is a g ra d u a te o f P a sa d e n a C o lle g e . He and his w ife, Maxine (nee Grim), have two children, Paula St. John and Scott Skiles, and five grand children. T he B oard o f G e n e ral Superintendents has appoint ed a sea rch c o m m itte e to locate a replacem ent for the retiring Skiles. A special tribute to Skiles w ill be p u b lish e d in the December Herald. Church Enters Bulgaria The Republic of Bulgaria has become the 107th world area entered by the Church of the Nazarene, according to Louie Bustle, World Mission Divi sion director. The decision to enter the eastern European n a tio n w as m ade by the W orld M ission D epartm ent at its June meeting. 48 The mission to Bulgaria is a jo in t v e n tu re b e tw e e n Southern Nazarene Universi ty and the W orld M issio n Division. The university has accepted the responsibility of enlisting groups of students to travel as advance teams to the new field. These students v o lu n teer th eir service and provide their own expenses. The first team of students arrived in Bulgaria in May. In order for a new work to be added to the list of active N azarene m issions, it m ust have personnel appointed to it or m u st have o rg a n iz e d congregations m eeting on a regular basis. H. Death followed an extended illness. Services were held Aug. 5. He was preceded in death by a son, John Paul. He began his service to the general church in 1965, succeeding T. W. W illingham as direc tor o f the N azarene Radio League.
