children and teens to as many new experiences as possible and help each
child feel confident and secure in a fun, safe camp environment. YMCA

Greetings and welcome to summer 2016! We are extremely delighted about and committed to
providing a top-notch experience to you and your family this summer camp session. We are
dedicated to going above and beyond in customer service and program
quality, and we want you to know that you can count on the Y to
provide educational and enriching programs for youth. You can
depend on the Y to be a home away from home this summer.
Our camp leadership team is made up of seasoned staff with
extensive camp experience and a love for camp. Our No. 1 goal is to
provide the safest, most enriching environment possible for you and
your family. Whether your camper is exploring San Diego County or
enjoying learning new skills and activities, we are sure that your
child or teen will have a blast and a half at camp.

Our camp program is a safe and secure environment for kids
and teens.
Our vast number of specialty camps allow youth to pursue the
interests for which they have passion.

and support our community. This summer, we will provide even more
ways that campers can volunteer to help others.

TRADITIONAL CAMPS (AGES 5-13)
ON-SITE CAMPS
Join Y Day Camp for a week or an entire summer of fun! New experiences, skill building, a sense of community and
lasting friendships are all part of traditional day camps. Trained camp leaders focus on caring, honesty, respect
and responsibility in all of our activities to maximize fun during the day! Set in the YMCA style of different crazy
activities and themes each week, your camper will participate in team building games, arts and crafts, science
experiments and more!
High Fives
Grade K • Age 5 • $194/$223
High Fives is a perfect fit for the first-time
camper. With a phenomenal staff supervision
ratio of 1:6, campers will enjoy a daily
30-minute YMCA preschool-level swim lesson
conducted by some of our outstanding YMCAcertified swim instructors. The rest of their
action-packed day will be spent getting messy
doing arts and crafts, getting dirty playing
games, and silly-singing their favorite camp
songs. A 30-minute indoor quiet time will also
be taken by this camp.

FIVE-DAY TRAVEL TRADITIONAL CAMPS
Take camper adventures to the next level this summer! Build self-confidence, meet new friends and have a
blast while exploring San Diego. Get a thrill from activities at the camp facility such as sports clinics, science
experiments or arts and crafts, while exploring exciting weekly themes. As if this isn’t enough, take trips to
different amazing locations, and bring home stories to share. Day campers will be divided into small groups by age,
and will participate in activities appropriate to the interests and needs of their group.

Beginner Trainee

Weeks 2, 3, 4, 6 • Mission Valley YMCA
This L.I.T. program is for all teens ages 1317 who have never participated in our LIT
programs before or did not participate in
our 2015 summer. In this training, campers
will interact and develop their ideas of what
a leader does and how a leader acts. In
addition, there will be specific training on
camp leadership skills (working with 5- to
12-year-olds, camp songs, games and crafts)
and all trainees will earn CPR and First Aid
certification cards.
Returner Review
Grades 7-12 • Ages 13-17 • $165/$190
This L.I.T. program is for all teens ages 13-17
who have previously participated in our 2015
summer program. In this training, teens will be
reintroduced to leadership skills and actions
during the first three days of camp training.
After proving their abilities, they will work as
a L.I.T. in a placement camp for the remaining

L.I.T. Placement

L.I.T. Placement is an opportunity for L.I.T.s and
C.I.T.s who have successfully completed our
training course to use their leadership skills
in the field of camp and enjoy the rewards of
working with the YMCA’s incredible staff team.
L.I.T.s will experience various camp programs,
assist in the daily operations of camp, and
receive valuable on-the-job experience that
will help build a strong foundation for either
a recreational or child care career, in addition
to helping them work on their leadership skills.
Our L.I.T. coordinator assigns placements into
age-appropriate camps the Friday of the week
prior to camp. If you sign up over the weekend,
your camp placement will be made Monday
morning by 8:30 a.m. Join our team in making a
difference in the lives of many young campers
this summer while earning school-required
volunteer service hours!
COUNSELORS-IN-TRAINING
(C.I.T.) CAMPS
C.I.T. Placement
Grades 11-12 • Ages 16-17 • Free/$50
C.I.T. Placement is geared toward teens who
are beginning the transition to becoming camp
counselors. They will have additional
responsibilities and expectations, more
aligned with those of our staff. Teens will earn
school-required volunteer service hours by
participating in this program. This is the
perfect opportunity to complete this
requirement and make a difference in our camp
community!

Traveling daily to Mr. Paintball
in Escondido, your sharp
shooter will crawl, roll and dart
through 13 fields covering
more than 100 acres for a funfilled experience. Goggles, jump suits, guns,
protective headgear and paintballs are all
provided, but campers are welcome to bring
their own equipment as well.
PLEASE NOTE: Although all paintball guns are
checked by the referees and set for safety at a
velocity of 250 feet per second or less, some
hits may still cause bruising.
Park Hoppers

skate park. This clinic is recommended for
intermediate- to advanced-level skaters as the
focus of the camp will be on perfecting and
learning tricks.
Teen Apprentice Camp

I CAN. This low-ratio camp
provides children with autism a day camp

environment. All Camp I CAN counselors have
additional experience working with specialneeds campers and take them on a fieldtrip
daily. Due to a limited number of spaces,

Cheer and Dance

This camp is literally hands-on; you’ll be
crafting ceramics from clay, pouring molds,
and painting and glazing your masterpieces.
Campers learn the basics of ceramics and
gain the feeling of self-accomplishment
through the creation of ceramic pieces
that they will cherish for a lifetime! No
experience is necessary.

Cooking at Copley-Price

Your camper will travel daily
to our beautiful Copley-Price
Family YMCA teaching kitchen
and get basic hands-on cooking
experience. Our young culinary
artists will be loaded with helpful tips and
tricks after spending a week with our talented
YMCA chefs. Each day, your little sous-chef will
learn to create different delicious, tasty treats
combining traditional favorites with out-ofthe-box creative concoctions. We’ll teach them
about local restaurants, farmers markets and
farm-to-table cooking techniques. Campers will
create their own recipe books that they can
easily follow to reconstruct their masterpieces
for you at home!
PLEASE NOTE: Most items that campers make
in cooking camp will be treats, snacks, and
fun-inspired creations. If your child has a food
allergy, please notify the Camp Unit Leader on
the first day of camp.

Equestrian and More
Grades 2-7 • Ages 7-12 • $400/$460
Weeks 2, 4, 6-10 • Mission Valley YMCA
Blue Apple Ranch hosts this
phenomenal experience sure to
please every camper with a love
of horses. Campers will spend
full days at the ranch learning
the basics of equestrian instruction (haltering,
leading, tying, riding, grooming and tacking),
as well as how to really care for and create
relationships with their horses. They’ll meet
a veterinarian, horse chiropractor, and farrier
(technician who fits horseshoes) to gain an
inside look into horsemanship. At this stateof-the-art, brand-new facility specializing
in rescue, rehabilitation and compassionate
care, campers will meet all types of horses,
like our friend Skittles, the mini-horse, and
even a Clydesdale! Campers will even have
an opportunity to explore the ranch and
experience first-hand some outstanding
outdoor education components, such as
recycling twine for arts and crafts and creating
bird houses on “Tweet Street.”
PLEASE NOTE: Long pants and closed-toe
shoes are required for riding, but campers may
bring shorts for exploring the ranch. Safety
riding helmets are provided.
Extreme Outdoor Sports
Grades 5-8 • Ages 10-13 • $285/$328
What would be more extreme this summer
than rock climbing, playing paintball, kayaking,
boogie boarding and more outdoor sports?
This camp is not for the faint of heart! Come
ready for some high-impact, high-energy,
extreme excitement that’s a bit of a break from
the norm!
Fencing Camp
Grades 3-7 • Ages 8-12 • $270/$311
En garde! Come learn about this fun and
challenging Olympic sport. For two hours
each day, campers will learn the basics of
foil fencing, including footwork, the lunge
and parrying. Safety and sportsmanship are
emphasized; all equipment will be provided.
Fishing Camp
Grades 2-7 • Ages 7-12 • $270/$311
Experience the sport of fishing
by traveling to hot spots all
over San Diego. Campers will
learn basic techniques in a fun
and safe environment. Campers
will fish in local areas, but on Thursday, they
will also experience a day of deep-sea fishing
in the Pacific Ocean. On this day, the group
will return to the Toby Wells YMCA between
6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The YMCA will provide
permits and poles for deep-sea fishing only.
PLEASE NOTE: Fishing poles and tackle
required all other days. We do NOT allow
chaperones for the deep-sea fishing day.
Flag Football Camp
Grades 3-7 • Ages 8-12 • $235/$270
Young athletes will love Flag Football Camp,
which features drills, scrimmages and
instruction that stresses both individual
positions and team play with every camper. Our
camp is designed to teach not only the core
fundamentals of the game of football, but also
lifelong characteristics, such as teamwork and
accountability, which will continue beyond the
playing field.

Gymnastics Camp

The high-energy game of
FootGolf will certainly please
all energetic and enthusiastic
campers! FootGolf is played the
same way as golf, except players
use a soccer ball instead of a golf ball! This
camp is a great fit for kids who enjoy sports
or for those who love being active. Campers
will travel to FootGolf courses daily to play and
perfect their skills in this brilliant game with
a twist.
Golf Camp

For beginning to experienced
gymnasts who want to learn or
improve acrobatic and creative
movement skills. Campers will
be grouped by age and ability
for three hours daily of gymnastics instruction,
including basic tumbling, equipment stations,
low beams and the ever-popular foam pit.
Camp will feature arts and crafts, games and
camp songs, highlighted by a gymnastics
performance for parents at the end of the
week. Instruction will take place in our stateof-the-art Gymnastics Center at Toby
Wells YMCA.

Fore! Look out for fun as your child learns
the sport of golf. Lessons will be taught by
excellent golf instructors, and your camper will
learn the basics of putting, short game and
the full swing. Along with lessons, campers
will play some holes and learn golf etiquette.
Campers are welcome and encouraged to
bring their own clubs, but loaner clubs
will be available, as well.

dancer will learn different styles of hip hop
dance, including top rock, popping, and break

Hockey Camp

Ice Skating

Weeks 2, 4, 5, 7-9 • Toby Wells YMCA
This camp is designed to be a fun and
educational experience for beginner and
intermediate ice skaters. Traveling to San
Diego Ice Arena, campers will get 30 minutes
of instructional lessons every day. Lessons are
followed by a two-hour public session where
they will skate to the latest tunes. Parents are
invited to a basic skills show on Friday. Only
skates are provided. However, campers may
bring their own skates and gloves.
PLEASE NOTE: Campers must bring socks
each day. If you don’t have a helmet, one will
be provided.
This camp is made for all hockey
enthusiasts, whether they
are beginner or intermediate
players. Daily lessons will focus
on techniques such as balance,
stick work, speed and teamwork, followed by
a public skate session. Parents are invited to a
basic skills showcase on Friday and will be able
to join campers on the ice afterward!
PLEASE NOTE: Campers must

Kendama Camp

in this camp dedicated to the
kendama. Beginners and experts

building their skills and learning new styles of

Laser Tag

Mission Valley YMCA is
proud to offer this exciting
and immensely popular camp
through our partnership with
ULTRAZONE, the Ultimate
Laser Tag Adventure. Campers of all ability
levels enjoy the full range of the laser tag
experience including exciting team-building
and game-tactical components. During the
camp week, campers will play a wide variety of
game formats and become seasoned, veteran
players. They will discover their inner leader as
they chart out their teams’ strategies and learn
how to best achieve the goals of each game.
An all-new set of take-home game analysis
documentation is now available, too!

LEGO Fury

This intense LEGO-building camp
is for the extreme LEGO camper.
Campers will learn how to craft,
build and construct different
LEGO structures through

imagination to create their own structures and

Robotics

challenge! Campers will build
a cutting-edge EV3 robot and
control its movements with
motors and sensors. Get your
robot to be the best in class at retrieval and
target missions on a LEGO playing field! On
Friday, campers will end the week with the
ultimate trip to LEGOLAND California!
Minecraft

Minecraft Camp allows young
gamers to learn to think like a
designer, create original games
and make new friends! Campers
will create and design different
items for their Minecraft worlds, allowing
them to take home their creations on a USB
drive. They will have the opportunity to travel
daily to Gizmos & Gadgets Kids Lab, a creative
warehouse space designed just for kids!
Magic Camp

A magician never tells, but this
week we will have some master
magicians who may just share
a secret or two with our young
magicians-to-be. Campers, you
will learn tricks and illusions to blow
your friends’ minds, and then you
can decide whether or not to tell the
secrets of the craft!

Come scale new heights! Campers will
receive two hours of daily instruction in the
fundamentals of rock climbing at Solid Rock
Gym, San Diego’s premier indoor rock climbing
facility. Experienced climbers will also teach
your campers about different knots and a
variety of techniques for successful climbing.
No previous climbing experience is necessary.
Equipment for rock climbing will be provided.
Vendor waiver is required.
Muggles and Magic
Nature Investigators
Grades 1-5 • Ages 6-10 • $260/$299
Tank the Tortoise has gone
missing! Your camper will join
a week-long investigation to
help solve the mystery of his
disappearance and bring him
home. Campers will travel to the Living Cost
Discovery Center daily to examine clues, use
real forensic science, and investigate suspects.
Plus, they’ll get to meet and have hands-on
experience with lots of amazing animals along
the way!
Grades 2-7 • Ages 7-12 • $235/$270
Welcome to the magical world of
Hogwarts! In this camp inspired
by Harry Potter, campers will
be sorted into their houses and
learn spells and potions. They
will even make and eat fun magical treats!
The fun doesn’t stop there — our young
wizards will also learn about magic wands
and participate in their own quidditch
tournament. No need to worry
about your camper having fun here
because our staff will make sure
that all the mischief is managed.

fun obstacle courses and relays.
In this active and spirited camp,
everyone will get in touch with
their inner ninja. Campers will be
introduced to timed challenges, group contests,
exciting brain teasers and more! The end of
the week will be celebrated with the ultimate
challenge: a giant inflatable obstacle course!

Archaeology
Grades 2-7 • Ages 7-12 • $260/$299
Campers will get hands-on
experience creating and testing
their own observations and
inferences. Our young sleuths
will work in teams to carry out
an investigation just like real detectives and
archaeologists. Campers will also get to visit
the San Diego Archaeology Center and create
fun, inspired take-home projects to share what
they’ve learned!
Pokémon Camp
Grades 2-7 • Ages 7-12 • $235/$270
After a fun-filled week at this
camp, your campers will be
saying, “Pikachu, I choose you!”
Children will learn all there is to
know about Pokémon, including
the card game. This is the perfect camp for
your Pokémon trainers to master their skills.

camps! Animal enthusiasts have a chance to
see virtually all of the aquatic wild life
and exciting shows that SeaWorld has
to offer, including dolphins, walruses,
sharks and sting rays. Find out how these
animals survive in their watery habitats
and how humans impact those habitats.
If you love to learn about marine life, then
this camp is sure to make a splash!

Skate and Scooter
Grades 1-10 • Ages 6-15 • $240/$276
Kick-flip your way into summer by enrolling
your young skater into this camp, designed for
beginner to advanced skateboarders and/or
kids who like to ride Razor scooters. Beginnerlevel curriculum is designed for kids that have
never been on a skateboard or scooter and
are just getting started. Instructors focus on
basic safety, balance and simple maneuvers
so that kids can master the basics. Advanced
riders can expect a focus on higher-level
techniques so that campers can perfect skills
that they already know. Instruction takes place
at Mission Valley YMCA Krause Family Skate
and Bike Park. Campers also have the choice
to bring Razor scooters to utilize at the park.
We now offer scooter
lessons for kids who
are looking to get
started or advance
their skills and learn
the ropes of scooter
riding in a skate
park environment.
PLEASE NOTE:
Skaters and
scooter riders
must bring and
wear all safety
gear, including

Soccer Camp

Your young soccer fan will get a kick out of
this camp. Our youth sports department will
provide three hours of instruction featuring
daily clinics, scrimmages and tournament play.
Drills will focus on dribbling, passing, shooting
and positioning techniques. Come out and try
our indoor-style soccer arena with its state-ofthe-art turf!
Sewing Camp
Grades 2-7 • Ages 7-12 • $260/$299
Let your camper join the world of sewing,
crocheting and knitting. Each day your little
seamsters and seamstress will work on basic
sewing and yarn projects! Don’t know how to
knit? No problem! Our instructors will make
learning fun and easy with step-by-step
instruction.
Splash Camp

your little fishes busy. Campers will travel daily

the children are not
in the pool, they
are having a blast
participating in
other camp activities
such as arts and
crafts, games, songs,

Surf Camp
Grades 4-11 • Ages 9-16 • $270/$311
Surf’s up! Come hang ten
with us this summer, and get
your feet wet in the world of
surfing in a safe, supervised,
fun environment with YMCA
surf staff. Start the week off on the beach
learning how to pop up on your board and read
the ocean. We will investigate different sets,
breaks and tides. Surfers will learn paddling
techniques and ultimately how to drop into
the wave with our experienced instructors,
who will also teach about water safety and
equipment care. Daily instruction will be based
on the ability levels of our campers, who will
average two hours per day in the water. Our
young surfers will also participate in beach
sports and games.
Limited beginner boards are available —
children sharing loaner boards may experience
limited time in the water. Any boards brought
by surfers must have nose and fin guards in
order to be permitted for use. In the event
of inclement weather or
ocean conditions (e.g. rip
tides, stingrays), campers
will participate in beach
activities until water entry
is safe. Rash guards are
required daily.
PLEASE NOTE: Campers
must be able to swim 100
yards, tread water for five
minutes and pass a swim
test on the first day of camp.

Tennis Camp
Grades 2-7 • Ages 7-12 • $235/$270
Join the likes of Nadal or
Williams with this high-energy
sport. Each camper will gain
a better understanding of the
basics of tennis during the two
hours spent on stroke development, taught by
qualified YMCA tennis instructors. Emphasis
is on the fundamentals for our beginners and
intermediate players. Tennis racket required.
PLEASE NOTE: This camp will travel to a local
campus tennis court for instruction.
That’s Gross
Grades 1-5 • Ages 6-10 • $260/$299
Come discover the slimy, gooey,
dirty and sometimes smelly
animals and plants that call the
home! From slippery squid to
hairy tarantulas and owl pellets to poo — this
camp will leave your child saying, “EWWW,
that’s gross... and AWESOME!”
Wacky Water Sports
Grades 2-11 • Ages 7-16 • $330/$380
Wakeboarding
Grades 2-11 • Ages 7-16 • $330/$380
This extremely popular sport is sure to
please this summer! Wakeboarding is like
snowboarding or skateboarding on the
water! Campers will spend the afternoon
wakeboarding, tubing, knee boarding and
taking Jet Ski rides on beautiful Mission
Bay. U.S. Coast Guard licensed drivers will
safely teach beginners how to ride or help
experienced riders to progress their skills to
the next level.
PLEASE NOTE: Campers must be able to swim
100 yards, tread water for five minutes and
pass a swim test on the first day of camp.
Love being in the water but can’t decide
how you want to enjoy it this summer? We
have the camp for you! Wacky Water Sports
Camp is a tour of all the coolest activities
you can do in the water around San Diego.
This camp includes tubing, boogie boarding,
sailing, kayaking and snorkeling! It’s a water
enthusiast’s dream.

Young Engineers

This camp is all about designing
and creating! Campers will
engineer projects like catapults,
mini chairs, stomp rockets and
more! Working with Gizmo &
Gadgets Kids Lab engineers, they will crash
test cars and hover crafts from start to finish,
drawing prototypes and making modifications
along the way.

Zoo Camp
Grades 1-5 • Ages 6-10 • $245/$282
Mission Valley YMCA partners with the worldfamous San Diego Zoo to give you a VIP
experience you won’t forget. A zoo guru will
spend a full hour touring campers behind the
scenes at some of your favorite exhibits. On
Monday, there is a bus tour to get a great
overview of the entire zoo. See some of the
phenomenal flora and fauna at one of the
world’s largest botanical gardens. If you love
monkeying around, this expedition is for you.
