The Class Reunion
Every ten years, as summertime nears, an announcement goes in the mail. A reunion is planned, it’ll be really
grand; make plans to attend without fail.
I’ll never forget the first time we met; we tried so hard
to impress. We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars, and
wore our most elegant dress.
It was quite an affair; the whole class was there, it was
held at a fancy hotel. We wined and we dined, and we
acted refined, and everyone thought it was swell.
The men all conversed about who had been first to
achieve great fortune and fame. Meanwhile their spouses
described their fine houses and how beautiful their children
became.
The homecoming queen, who once had been lean,
now weighed in at one-ninety-six. The jocks who were
there had all lost their hair, and the cheerleaders could no
longer do kicks.
No one had heard about the class nerd who’d guided a
spacecraft to the moon. Or poor little Jane, who’s always
been plain; she married a shipping tycoon.
The boy we decreed “Most Apt to Succeed” was serving ten years in the pen, while the one voted “Least” now
was a priest; just shows you can be wrong now and then.
They awarded a prize to one of the guys who seemed
to have aged the least. Another was given to the grad who
had driven the farthest to attend the feast.
They took a class picture, a curious mixture of beehives, crewcuts and wide ties. Tall, short or skinny, the
style was the mini; you never saw so many thighs.
At our next get-together, no one cared whether they
impressed their classmates or not. The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal; by this time we’d all gone
to pot.
It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores; we ate
hamburgers, coleslaw and beans. Then most of us lay
around in the shade, in our comfortable T-shirts and jeans.
By the fortieth year, it was abundantly clear, we were
definitely over the hill. Those who weren’t dead had to
crawl out of bed... and be home in time for their pill.
And now I can’t wait, they have set the date; our fiftieth is coming, I’m told. It should be a ball, they’ve rented
a hall at the Shady Rest Home for the old.
Repairs have been made on my hearing aid; my pacemaker’s been turned up on high. My wheelchair is oiled
and my teeth have been boiled, and I’ve bought a new wig
and glass eye.
I’m feeling quite hearty and I’m ready to party, I’m
gonna dance ‘til dawn’s early light! It’ll be lots of fun, I just
hope that there’s one other person that can make it that
night.

City of Jonesville Update
Hello, Jonesville Alumni!
This past year has been an exciting one in Jonesville. First
and foremost, as you may have noticed, we have completed
the city incorporation process. Last August, we went from
being known as the Village of Jonesville to the City of
Jonesville, when voters approved for our City Charter by a
two-to-one margin.
Jonesville residents now get all of their services from the
City. As a result, we held our first election in November at the
Jonesville Fire Department and are now managing the Sunset
View Cemetery. Property tax assessments now take place at
the City, too, with Jonesville residents no longer paying
Fayette Township taxes.
And 2015 is proving to be an exciting year, too, with several projects on the horizon.
We expect work will begin soon to redevelop the former
Kiddie Brush and Toy Company. Excel Realty, a company in
Godfrey Brothers
Jonesville, Michigan
Godfrey Brothers, Inc., would like to thank everyone for
over 40 years of support with our family business. Without
great support from local farmers and homeowners, we would
not have made it as one of the last single-store operations with
John Deere in the country!
The John Deere dealership was started in the early 1930s
at the former Grills Hardware in downtown Jonesville, with
many owners of the dealership. On June 1, 1974, two brothers, W. Jack (‘52) & Bev (‘52) Godfrey and Roger (‘58) &
Loann Godfrey went together to buy the John Deere dealership from Jim Tauke of Tauke Sales & Service.
After many years, Roger Godfrey retired, followed by W.
Jack Godfrey’s retirement. The dealership has transitioned to
Jack’s son, Kevin Godfrey (‘79) with his wife Mariann and his
sons. Alan Godfrey (‘09) is in an aviation job in Arizona and
Wally Godfrey (‘08) is working at the dealership. Kyle Godfrey
(‘12) is going to Northwood University, studying for his
Automotive Marketing & Management Degree.
In January 1994, the dealership’s main building had a
major fire and we had to rebuild. This was a yearlong project
that took a lot of support from all.
In 2014, the dealership was named the Dealership of the
Year for North America for all brands for Farm Equipment
Dealers with sales under $75 million per year. Our product
lines are John Deere products, Stihl, Kuhn Krause Knight, and
Honda.
The Godfrey family and all its great employees want to
thank everyone for the great past and a bright future with the
support from everyone.
Without you all, we could not have made it over 40 years.
Thank you.
the Cleveland, Ohio area, has plans to renovate the building
for 44 one- and two-bedroom apartments. They will be investing several million dollars into this downtown building. It will
be outstanding to see the building brought back to life, with
much-needed housing and additional commerce for our
downtown businesses. Construction is tentatively slated to
start in late May or June.
In the spring and summer, the City will begin construction
of a 1.4 mile walking and biking path. The so-called “Rail
Trail” will utilize a portion of abandoned railroad right-of-way.
It will be a 10-foot-wide paved path, with a trailhead planned
at US-12/Chicago Street, behind the Jonesville Police
Department and across from The Udder Side. The path will
provide public access to the St. Joseph River and a scenic
recreation opportunity.
Construction will be made possible through a $296,000
Natural Resources Trust Fund grant. The Jonesville Rotary
Club is planning $15,000 in enhancements to the trailhead,
as well, including a pavilion and picnic tables.
Planning is underway for the 41st Annual Riverfest.
Always held the third weekend in May, this year’s event will
take place on May 15, 16 and 17. It is a great weekend full
of crafts, events, and (of course) river races. Visit
www.jonesvilleriverfest.org for more information.
And while you’re online, be sure to connect with the City
at our website: www.jonesville.org. We have revamped our
site this year to include even more information. You can also
join over 3,000 friends and follow us on Facebook. You will
find the official Jonesville Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/jonesville.michigan.
If you are a fan of traditional communication, stop by City
Hall and say “hi!” My door is open!
Go Comets!

The Jonesville
College Challenge
Jonesville Community Schools and the Jonesville Alumni
Association are pleased to announce the Jonesville
College Challenge. This program gives each kindergartener at Williams Elementary School a $25 college savings
account (also known as a 529 plan). The initial startup
money for this was donated by the Class of 2012. This is
the second year of the program. The goal is to give
parents the tools to begin
saving for their child’s college
education. If you would like
more information, please
contact Robert Drake,
Guidance Counselor at the
high school, at 517-849-9934.

The Udder Side
Who knew owning an ice cream shop could be a moooving experience?!
You’re still doing what you did in high school?
Haven’t you ever wanted to do anything else
besides work at an ice cream and burger joint in your
hometown?
Yes and no.
In 1977, I got my first job at the Tastee Freeze,
where I worked throughout high school. A summer
job, yes — but my lifelong goal? I didn’t believe so.
Who knew?
After graduating from Jonesville High School in
1979 and Central Michigan University in 1983 with a
degree in social work, I moved to San Fransisco with
plans to leave for the Philippines and the Peace
Corps. When I received news in the dead of the night
that my dad had died, I moved back home where I
grew up, in Jonesville, to help my mom care for my
grandma.
Working at Social Services to help negligent parents who were about to lose their children frustrated
me. Within the year, I went back to work at the familiar Dairy Treat. The name changed in the late 70’s.
After buying the business in 1990 and marrying
my “knight in shining armor,” Dave, in 1991, we
spent the next decade-plus perfecting our choreography.
In the 490-square-foot building, which started life
as a Standard gas station in the 1920s, we created
funky and funny names, striving for uniqueness. Our
menu includes oddball names, like “Cow Tippin’
Fries” and “The Manure Spreader” and “Sticky Silo.”
If you’ve got to work, might as well make it fun, right?
Our class motto was, “Do not follow where the
path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and
leave a trail.” I’d like to think, in our own little way,
we’re doing that.
Literally bursting out of our old building, we
bought property across the street in 2002 and
MOOOVED to “The Udder Side,” opening our new
building in May 2004. Personally, I was thrilled to
shed the old generic name “Dairy Treat,” as there is a
“Tastee Treat” or “Dairy Boy” in every little town in
America.
We’ve come a long way in 25 years of business,
and I feel we have the best of both worlds. The Udder
Side allows us to live in our small community and contribute to the town where I grew up. At the same time,
our downtime allows us to travel and experience the
world. My dream has come true, right here in
Jonesville.
No matter how far we travel, though, there’s no
place like home.
Julia Bauer (‘79)
