(Pauses for breath!) Oh my God! For the first time for as long as I can remember, we’re without the cowboy auctioneer,Bobby Johnson. Apparently there’s a global financial crisis in Tamworth, or something. Anyway, no such situation in Noosa, where the big spenders of the surf world come to invest in extraordinary treasures each year, thanks to auction convenor Darryl Homan and his incredible global network of collectors, who pull together the best of the best in surfboards and surf culture. This year we’re in the new-look surf club, thanks to Moggy and all our friends in the Supporters Club, and to the hard-working crew on the beach for the NHSC, who help our festival in so many ways. On ya, clubbies! To all the buyers and sellers, and all the folks along for the fun, Darryl and I sincerely hope you enjoy this year’s auction and that you have a fantastic week at the festival. (And get through a couple of heats, sink a few coldies and catch up with old mates.) And a big hug to Chrissie Lee and all the crew who help us out with this every year for a beer and a slice of pizza! Cheers Phil and Bonga accept the joint Crusty & Homey World Longboarding Title, Feb 26, 2009.
