Welcome to the first annual
ASBURY PARK MUSIC IN FILM FESTIVAL
Known for its extraordinary talent across all artistic genres, Asbury Park is iconic.
So it is no surprise that, given the creativity that is core to our City, when we decided
to do a new, weekend-long Festival we would do something completely different from
other festivals around the country. Our goal with this Festival was to create a unique
and community inclusive experience that showcases both extraordinary music and film
talent from around the world, while also raising money that will provide K-12 music
education for children throughout the City of Asbury Park.
The Asbury Park Music in Film Festival (APMFF) is a partnership between the Asbury
Park Press and the Asbury Park Music Foundation and, after months of planning, what
was once only an idea has become a reality. In our first year we have received nearly
150 film submissions, from New Jersey to Australia. Over 60 films have been selected
to screen at one of eight venues throughout the city. Additionally, because the Festival is
featuring both music and film, the City will be alive all weekend with performances from
local and national talent and across genres in both conventional and unconventional
venues. It will truly be a Festival that brings together multiple
communities to celebrate creative excellence
and engages our entire City.

ASBURY PARK MUSIC FOUNDATION
In 2011, the Smithsonian Institution selected Asbury Park as
the first host city of its taveling musical heritage exhibit, “New
Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music.” From March
11 to April 17 more than 14,000 visitors enjoyed the exhibit,
including 48 class trips from area elementary and secondary
schools. This event, supported by partners Monmouth University and the Asbury Park Press, marked the launch of a yearlong celebration of Asbury Park’s musical heritage. As part of
the celebration, noted historian and author Helen-Chantal Pike
produced and edited “Asbury Park: Where Music Lives,” an anthology of essays by local musicians expert in gospel, ragtime,
jazz, folk, rock and Latin/Caribbean genres; a new website was
launched; a documentary was produced chronicling the experience of musicians, producers, and audience members whose
extraordinary stories are an integral part of Asbury Park’s musical heritage.
A group of
dedicated,
generous volunteers realized that the
celebration
had to continue for years
to come; thus,
the Asbury Park
Musical Heritage Foundation
was created, its
mission being to
preserve, exhibit
and
promote
the City of Asbury Park’s rich
musical heritage
– past, present
and future – and to contribute to
the City’s revitalization by securing Asbury Park as
a musical destination. Incorporated in 2011 in New
Jersey, the Foundation was officially launched on
April 28, 2012 at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel,
steps from the famed Asbury Park boardwalk, with
the premier of the documentary “Asbury Park Musical Memories,” celebrating the memories of those
who
made,
witnessed and
participated in
the musical history of Asbury
Park.
Though the
foundation will
always stay true
to its mission, its
Board of Directors has decided
to take things in a
new direction. At
the end of 2014,
the Foundation legally changed its
name to the Asbury Park Music Foundation. With a new identity, they will now
focus on the future of this amazing beachside community. The
children are the future of Asbury Park, and we believe that music
is the soul of the city.
As part of this mission, The APMF helped fund a new comprehensive music program at Hope Academy Charter School, a
K-8th public school of choice here in Asbury Park. Hope Academy
overwhelmingly serves a low-income population, with a current
95% free and reduced lunch rate. The Music Foundation, in partnership with Lakehouse Music Academy, has thus far raised over
$48,000 to help fund the music program at Hope. The Foundation also recently instituted a Hip-Hop academy, complete with a
fully functional recording studio in the Boys & Girls Club of Asbury
Park. In order to keep this program alive, and to institute similar
programming for underprivileged youth, the Foundation must
generate funding.
In order to keep the ball rolling, the Foundation
must continue to generate money from donors and
events. It is their goal to use the Asbury Park
Music in Film Festival to leverage community
support and continue to fund programs in underprivileged areas of the Jersey Shore.

It was a
decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains,
Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream,
Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man,
Fugazi, and others released their own records
and booked their own shows—without major
record label constraints or mainstream media
scrutiny. Contextually, it was a cultural watershed that predated the alternative music
explosion of the 1990s (and the industry’s
subsequent implosion). Thirty years later,
DC’s original DIY punk spirit serves as a reminder of the hopefulness of youth, the power

In 1987, four New Jersey teenagers wrote a
punk song called “Braindead.” It was terrible.
But it was also a blast. And it was enough for
the members of The Bouncing Souls to turn
away from the path of college and career to
pursue their music. Fifteen years later, The
Bouncing Souls have signed with Epitaph
Records, toured four continents, and played
with countless legendary punk bands, including Fugazi, Bad Brains, Green Day, Agnostic
Front, The Descendents, and The Ramones.
But it wasn’t always so glamorous. For years
the band struggled with obscurity, homelessness, and more than its share of breakdowns
(both mental and vehicular). Culled from over
400 hours of archive footage shot and collected by lead singer Greg Attonito, and over
50 hours of interviews with the band and their
extended family of friends, Do You Remember? is the story of the good times and the
bad, and the music that was born out of both.

Meet and learn from these two experts about
what it takes to work with some of the largest
bands and artists in the world and what makes
a great music video and concert film.
When they signed with one of the world’s biggest record labels, New Jersey’s Rye Coalition was primed to finally get their glory, or
so it seemed. Like countless rockers before
them, childhood best friends started a band
in a basement with a couple simple goals in
mind: have fun and play good music. As one
of the first bands to develop the new “emo”
sound, they were at the forefront of a movement that included Shellac, Sunny Day Real
Estate, Jawbreaker and Karp (with whom they
later recorded a legendary 12” split). Rye Coalition’s first recording was a demo cassette
tape (1994’s “Dancing Man”, self-released),
backed by an East Coast tour in a beat up
schoolbus long before most of them had their
driver’s license. As their talent and fan base
grew, they released albums on indie labels
and toured the country for over ten years on
bigger and bigger bills: (At- The-Drive-in, Mars
Volta, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters).

the inter-generational and inter-racial musical influence of Memphis in the face of pervasive discrimination and segregation. The film brings multiple generations of award-winning Memphis and Mississippi

historian Jean Mikle hosts a discussion about some
of the faces, places and live shows that made Asbury Park famous. Opening with a never before seen
preview of a film about Asbury Park’s legendary Upstage Club. Followed by a discussion with director
Tom Jones and Joe Patillo about the Upstage’s impact on the Asbury Park Music scene. The event will
feature a never before seen trailer for a documentary
currently in production which explores the rich history of Asbury Park’s legendary “Upstage Club” and
the turmoil which gripped Asbury at the time and led
to the Clubs demise. The event will also feature a
discussion with the film’s director, Tom Jones, and
singer/songwriter Joe Petillo who was a member of
the Upstage’s house band, The Distractions. They
will answer questions and discuss the Upstage’s impact on the Asbury Park Music scene.

The Story of a U2 Tribute Band”

1969. Man lands on the moon. Half a million
strong at Woodstock. Sesame Street makes its
debut...and Led Zeppelin perform in the gym
of the Wheaton Youth Center in front of 50
confused teenagers. Or did they? Filmmaker
Jeff Krulik offers his take on an enduring Maryland legend, on the very night this concert
was alleged to have taken place, January 20,
1969, during the first Presidential Inauguration of Richard Nixon. Led Zeppelin Played
Here presents a mid-Atlantic version of what
was happening nationwide as the rock concert
industry took shape. Featuring interviews with
rock writers, musicians, and fans, and several
who claim they were witnessing history that
night.
The life of a cover band has a world of idiosyncrasies to explore. Unlike the band they
are portraying, most cover bands cannot
live solely off the money they make from
playing their music. This film will explore
the challenges Unforgettable Fire faces in
their personal and professional lives while
living in the shadows of one of the most
established and popular bands in history:
U2. This film will examine what physical
features and mannerisms the band has
changed in order to adopt U2’s trademark
look. This trademark look is most apparent
with Unforgettable Fire’s Lead Singer Tony,
also known as TONO. We all have dreams and
high hopes that we don’t know how to accomplish. But what is the true motivation behind
these goals? If it is simply to be a rock star
and stand in front of an audience who loves
your music, then what is the difference in the
destination between band and cover band?

A filmmaker takes a curious and collusive look
at his son’s endearing tribe. Life According To
Morgue is a voyage into the provocative and
destabilizing world of death black metal music. The documentary follows the members of
Morgue for two years, painting a portrait of motivated young creators who explore violent and
blasphemous themes. Far from being serial
killers, they live normal lives with school and
jobs. The responsibilities of adult life are slowly
catching up to them. The carefree and festive
nature of their youth may be drawing to an end.

One Knite, a ramshackle dive in Austin TX
during the early 1970s, which inadvertently
became the incubator for the city’s fledgling
white blues scene when its laid-back, anything
goes owners began allowing musicians like
Stevie and Jimmie Vaughan to play for a pass
of the hat. At a time when Progressive Country
ruled Austin, the One Knite provided the shelter under which players soon to be known the
world over could develop their craft and hone

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the
Ramones, there was a band called Death. Punk
before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the
early ‘70s formed a band in their spare bedroom,
began playing a few local gigs and even pressed
a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this
was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death’s music— and band
name– too intimidating, and the group were never
given a fair shot, disbanding before they even
completed one album. Equal parts electrifying
rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band
Called Death chronicles the incredible fairy-tale
journey of what happened almost three decades
later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way
out of the attic and found an audience several
generations younger. Playing music impossibly
ahead of its time, Death is now being credited
as the first black punk band (hell...the first punk
band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue
recognition as true rock pioneers.

The Asbury Park beach and boardwalk proved to
be a perfect location shoot for this video as Asbury
Park has been a favorite spot for couples going

a director, Clinch has received two Grammy Award
nominations: in 2005 for Bruce Springsteen’s
“Devils and Dust” and in 2009 for John Mayer’s
“Where The Light Is.” He also has directed music
videos for Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Pearl Jam,
John Legend, Melissa Etheridge, The Foo Fighters, and Dave Matthews, among others. Other
music documentaries and concert films directed
by Clinch include 2007’s “Immagine in Cornice,”
following Pearl Jam through their Italy tour, 2006’s
“Skin & Bones” featuring The Foo Fighters, and
several films from the Bonnaroo Music Festival.
In 2011 he completed “Live From Preservation
Hall: A Louisiana Fairytale,” a film that documents
the collaboration between My Morning Jacket and
Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Salerno. It is told through an oral history format of

to life the gritty story of one of New Jersey’s most
infamous clubs and its larger than life promoter.
Riot on the Dance Floor chronicles the rise of
several different music scenes in a venue for underground music that taversed the entertainment
spectrum; from the comedy of Henny Youngman
to Nine Inch Nails, New Order to Nirvana. It is also
the story of a music business lifer; a road warrior, part-time musician, radio host and former
postal worker who went looking for a place to spin
his New Wave records and ended up building an
independent movement out of nothing in a dead

Tomi Fujiyama, the world’s first female japanese
country music star. From playing the USO circuit
throughout Asia to headlining in Las Vegas and
recording 7 albums for Columbia records, Tomi’s
career culminates in a 1964 performance at The
Grand Ole Opry where she followed Johnny Cash
and received the only standing ovation of the
night. Forty years later, Tomi and her husband set
out on a journey through Japan and across the
United States to fulfill a dream of performing at
The Opry one more time. “Made in Japan” is a
funny yet poignant multi-cultural journey through
music, marriage, and the impact of the corporate
world on the dreams of one woman.

SUNDAY. Piano Virtuoso and Jersey Shore native
John Colianni improvises a live piano accompaniment to classic films of the silent era in between
swinging sets of the John Colianni Trio. Colianni
has shared the stage with Mel Torme’, Les Paul,
and Lionel Hampton, to name a few, and can also
be heard on the 2009 film soundtrack of Revolutionary Road (L. DiCaprio, Kate Winslet). There
are also lengthy appearances in films “Chasing
Sound!” and “Live in New York”, PBS films that
document the career and gigs of Les Paul.

MEET THE JUDGES - FILM
Bill Mackanic has been a writer, pro-
ducer, director and editor of video and television for close to twenty years. He now owns
his own company called Mackanic Media
Video Production. He produces television
commercials, social media and website content, online advertising segments as well as
visual training tools, event coverage, corporate and industrial videos. Bill’s key skills and
abilities include Production Management,
Story Development, Edit Supervision, Studio
Coordination, Scripting, Community Relations, Shoots Coordination, Strategic Program Planning, Talent Relations and Budgeting. He began his education in Film and
Television Studies at the American University
in Washington DC and went on to receive a
Bachelor Of Arts Degree in Television Production from Seton Hall University in South
Orange, New Jersey.
Old Davy Taylor
is a guitar and
banjo player from Belmar, New Jersey. “Old
Davy” as he is most commonly known, is
the founder of the rock group Fat Cat (19671974), and has played solo gigs by the Jersey
Shore since moving to Belmar in 2001. To
create more opportunities for the locals (and
for himself) Davy founded the Belmar Arts
Council Jam Band, which still plays gigs to
this day. Mr. Taylor has been a judge for the
“Belmar Teen Idol” and NJ Transit Music on
the Platform, a volunteer musician for seniors
and community groups, and even starred as
Vincent Van Gogh in an 1980’s art film. He is
currently writing a memoir about a cat, and
likes to blog in “Family Science Updates” and
travelogues.
TONY PALLAGROSI was a trumpet
player in Southside Johnny and the Asbury
Jukes as well as the Miami Horns. He toured
with Bruce Springsteen as a member of the
Miami Horns and founded and played in a
number of seminal Asbury Park bands. Along
with former Asbury Juke Carlo Novi, he later
joined Adelphi Records recording artists, the
legendary Charlottesville Blues Allstars, touring and performing with blues greats Delbert
McClinton, Muddy Waters, John Hammond
Jr., George Thorogood, Pinetop Perkins,

Buddy Guy and Junior Wells along with many
others. Switching to the business side of music in the early 90’s, Pallagrosi became one
of the talent buyers for the newly reopened
Stone Pony and conceived and created the
Pony’s outdoor concert area then known as
The Stone Pony Landing. Working alongside
Jon Bon Jovi, the two organized, in 1998,
the Come Together Concert, a benefit for the
family of Long Branch Police Sergeant Pat
King who was gunned down and killed in the
line of duty. Mr. Pallagrosi then teamed up
with Bob Benjamin to co-found the Light of
Day Foundation to raise money for research
in finding the cure for Parkinson’s disease.
He’s received letters of commendation from
NJ Governor Chris Christie, the NJ State
Legislature and the US Congress citing his
many humanitarian endeavors. His passion
for music, first as a musician and then as an
entrepreneur, and his dedication to humanitarian efforts in the community at large have
touched and benefited many lives.
Michael Izzo has been a film critic
since he could speak and at the age of 3,
he began handing out business cards – “Michael Izzo, Movie Critic”. A decade later, Michael began reviewing movies for the teen
section of the Daily Record, a job he held until leaving for Syracuse University in 2008. After graduating in May 2012, Michael worked
for the entertainment vertical of Business
Insider in New York City, and in October of
that year began working as a reporter for the
Daily Record. Michael manages to include
film reviews and stories and find time to see
at least 80 new movies per year. He is also
a music critic who has an eclectic taste and
has profiled many local musicians over the
past few years with the Daily Record. Michael is a novice guitar player, admitting he
plays at least once a week, often butchering
classic tunes. “One day,” he likes to think, “I’ll
be able to play a song.” Until then he will leave
it up to the professionals.
John Pfeiffer is a name long associat-
ed with the music scene. Beginning in the late
80’s, his role as songwriter/guitarist in popular New Jersey groups (In Between Dreams
and Well of Souls) was instrumental in getting
them the nod for “best original group” by NJ
Monthly and The Village Voice. John’s current role as a journalist for The Aquarian Arts
Weekly has brought revivalist quality back to
original music descriptivism in the Tri-State
area. John also spent time on the board of directors for The Asbury Musical Heritage Foundation which has played host to the Smithsonian Institutes traveling musical heritage
exhibit, called, “New Harmonies: Celebrating
American Roots Music.”
Rosemary Conte
has been a working
artist and arts advocate in Central New Jersey
and the Jersey Shore for over 40 years in roles
ranging from consultant to a theater company
for the physically disabled, and music consultant to indie film company Ultravision, to lending
her own acting talent to Shore productions like
playwright Maureen Nevin’s Ocean Mile, about
the failed re-development of Asbury Park. Her
lifelong training and experience as a performing jazz singer, voice teacher and performance
coach has added another dimension to her
long career as a clinical hypnotherapist and
counselor. A poet, songwriter, reviewer, and
syndicated columnist, Rosemary writes about
the fields in which she has lived and worked.

new monthly interactive magazine, NewJerseyStage.com.
David Salowe
is a filmmaker and educator from Monmouth County, NJ. His films
have played in numerous festivals over the
past few years. He also was a programming
director of the 2009 Red Bank International
Film Festival. In addition to his creative endeavors he is a film and video instructor at
the Communications High School where he
has taught and mentored hundreds of student filmmakers whose films have appeared
in hundreds of festivals, nationally and internationally.
Jason DeSimone has over a dec-
ade of on-set experience working on feature
film as well as broadcast commercial and
music video content. After years of working
as a Production Assistant Jason began producing and directing content in early 2008
with the short film “Lipstick Bandits”. In 2010
Jason produced the short film “Tied-Up”
which won “Best In Festival” at the Metropolitan Film Festival of NY and was an official
selection at over a dozen other festivals that
year. Shortly after “Tied-Up”, Jason began
producing the music for the song “Chalk
Outline” by RCA band Three Day’s Grace’s
which currently has over 5 million views. In
June of 2013 Jason directed a pilot episode
for a TV concept featuring MTV’s Matt Pinfield, in the pilot they explored the city of Asbury Park through it’s music history. It was
on this project that Jason began his relationship with the Asbury Park Music Heritage
Foundation began.

Fitzerman-Blue are writers and
producers on Golden Globe winning series, “Transparent.” Together, they wrote
“The Motel Life” with Dakota Fanning, Emile
Hirsch and Kris Kristofferson. The film won
Best Screenplay at the Rome Film Festival.
They are currently writing a feature about
Mister Rogers for directors Jonathan Dayton
and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), and
a feature called “IPO Man” for Fox Searchlight, with Jason Bateman attached to star
and direct.
